--- Enjoy the Ride ---
--- By Don Vaughan ---
---------------------------------------
You never know where sex writing is going to take you. Just a few weeks ago, for example, I found myself standing in front of a group of total strangers animatedly discussing the therapeutic benefits of erotica and my own personal love affair with all things porno. The venue? My local Adam & Eve retail store.
Don’t worry, I wasn’t alone. At my side was my wife Nanette who, though not a professional writer of sex or anything else, was more than eager to share the female perspective on the subject at hand. I was wise to bring her, too, because our audience was the very definition of eclectic: young couples, older couples, lesbian couples, lonely old men. You name it, they were there, hooked on our every word, eager to begin their own love affair with smut.
This particular speaking gig was the result of an article I had recently published in Penthouse Forum on the therapeutic benefits of porn. In it I quoted a number of well-known and very respected sex therapists who routinely prescribe commercial erotica to couples in need.
Apparently the article made the rounds through the Adam & Eve offices until it reached the desk of the guy in charge of the retail division. He gave me a call, asked me if I wanted to speak on the same subject, and a deal was struck. Nan and I received no money for our lecture, though we did get a $100 gift certificate, which we blew on a couple of videotapes, a nifty new vibrator and some apple-flavored lube.
The Adam & Eve gig is just one of many fun yet bizarre situations in which I’ve found myself as a result of my nonfiction sex writing. Over the years, I have interviewed porn legend Amber Lynn in the liquor closet of a South Florida strip joint (despite the rumbling, desk-sized ice machine, it was the quietest place in the joint); talked in person and by phone with numerous other porn stars; discussed the joys of anal play over lunch at TGI Friday’s with a woman who had sex with her husband for one of the very first Better Sex videos; donned surgical scrubs to observe penis enlargement surgery up close and chatted up all manner of people on the sexual fringe, including a guy who created remarkably lifelike rubber replicas of women’s feet for fetishists with money to burn.
If I’ve learned anything in my 25-plus years as a professional journalist, it’s that writing is a journey. Sometimes you know in advance where that journey will take you, and sometimes you don’t. But regardless of your destination, enjoy the ride. You’re living a life that thousands of other people only dream about.

Chance Encounters - An Anthology of Short Erotic Fiction
Submission Deadline -- April 15, 2004
Two strangers meet in a crowded hallway, on a train, or passing
on the street. A glance, a touch, a spark of desire; something
brings them together and leads to love at first sight, romance,
or good old-fashioned lust, and we're lucky enough to catch a
glimpse. We're looking for stories that illustrate the heart
pounding pleasure of the chance encounter, where getting caught
is a bigger concern than exchanging names and phone numbers.
We are primarily looking for homoerotic stories. However, we are
not looking for pornography without characterization. While many
of the stories in these anthologies will be focused on an adult
audience, well-written stories without graphic content will be
welcomed. Please visit our site at http://www.torquerepress.com
to see a sample of the fiction we publish and exact guidelines.
Along with your story, please submit a word count, contact
information, an author's biography and picture (if available).
Also include a brief synopsis of the work. Please indicate whether
your story has been previously published or has been edited by an
author.
We pay a percentage royalty plus contributor's copies.

Desdmona's Third Erotic Story Contest
Website: http://www.desdmona.com/
Guidelines: www.desdmona.com/contest.asp
Contact: contest@desdmona.com
Deadline: April 15, 2004
Desdmona.com is now accepting submissions for its third erotic story contest. We've decided to have another flash fiction contest, but this time we want to make it a little bit harder for all you flash experts.
Like our first contest, stories must be 300 words or less. Unlike our first postcard fiction contest, we've decided to have a theme this time. Entries for the The Fishnet Flash Contest should, in some way, make reference to stockings. Nylons, fishnets, pantyhose, wool footies - the type of stocking and how you decide to work it into your story is up to you. You will be judged on your inventiveness.
To be elligible for cash prizes, stories must be received before April 15, 2004. As with our other contests, $200 will be awarded to the first prize story, $100 for second, and $50 for third. Honorable mention prizes of $20 will be awarded at the discretion of desdmona.com and the contest judges.
Imagine what you can do with 300 words and a pair of black silk stockings. And send the results to us!
For complete contest details, see www.desdmona.com/contest.asp.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Breath & Shadow
Website: Breath and Shadow
Guidelines: Guidelines
Contact: Sharon Wachsler
Journal of Disability Culture and Literature Seeks Submissions!
Who Are We?
Breath & Shadow, a monthly online journal of poetry, fiction, essays,
drama,
and other writing by people with disabilities, is seeking work. We are
currently the only literary journal written and edited entirely by people
with
disabilities. The response to our first two issues has been overwhelming
and
gratifying, but we seek always to stretch our boundaries further.
What Do We Publish?
Breath & Shadow considers writing on ANY topic - it does not have to be
overtly about disability - as long as the contributor is a person with a
disability (defined broadly and encompassing mental, physical, emotional,
and sensory disabilities). We seek to present the disability experience in
all its diversity - in subject matter, form, and style, as well as in
author demographics (although, for funding reasons writers from Maine get
first priority, followed by those from other New England states).
What About Erotica?
Although we are not an erotica publication, we will consider work that
explores sexuality, sensuality, and related themes. Stories of explicit
sexual activity are less likely to be published than pieces in which
sexuality is an aspect of the overall work. In other words, Breath &
Shadow
seeks to engage its readers' intellects.
Pay?
Ranges from $5 to $25.
Where Do I Get More Info?
Please read the current and past issues to gain a sense of our style and
content. The main page is at www.abilitymaine.org/breath. Complete
writers'
guidelines can be found below and at a www.abilitymaine.org/breath/write.html.
Questions should be directed to Sharon Wachsler at
breathandshadow@aol.com.
Have Any Helpful Hints?
Yes! We receive far more poetry than any other genre. Thus, the
competition
in that category is extremely strict and we are particularly seeking
prose.
If you have an idea for an article, interview, or profile you'd like to
write, please e-mail a query to breathandshadow@aol.com. To send us
drama,
fiction, or creative nonfiction, follow our submission guidelines at
http://www.abilitymaine.org/breath/write.html.
Also, send us material that is not appearing in nondisability and/or
ableist culture. We love writing that explores some aspect of the
disability experience that is ignored by mainstream media.
Please feel free to forward, post, and distribute this information.
Sincerely,
Sharon Wachsler
Editor, Breath & Shadow
www.abilitymaine.org/breath
breathandshadow@aol.com
###
We are always looking for submissions! Please thoroughly read our "Submission Guidelines" below. If you have further questions, you may e-mail the Editor in Chief, Sharon Wachsler, at BreathandShadow@aol.com
Submission Guidelines
Disability
Breath & Shadow accepts work only from people with disabilities. We use the term "disability" broadly to encompass anyone with a physical, mental, emotional, cognitive, or sensory impairment that significantly affects one or more major life functions.
We know that friends, family members, and care providers of people with disabilities also have important things to say about their experience of disability. However, Breath & Shadow is a forum for people with disabilities to speak for ourselves. We hope that our allies will support this endeavor.
Geography
We strongly encourage writers from Maine to submit. Writing from the other New England states is also especially welcome. While we do invite and accept work from writers from all areas of the United States and internationally, authors from Maine and New England get first priority.
Age
We accept writing from people of all ages, from children to seniors. We especially encourage youth to submit their work to Breath & Shadow. Young writers (21 and under) should include their age on their submission so we can judge their contribution appropriately. In some cases, mentoring and/or writing and editing assistance may be available to young writers.
Writing Guidelines
Breath & Shadow needs your writing! Please note: We accept writing on any topic for poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and drama; these pieces do not have to be "about" disability. However nonfiction, academic, and similar articles (profiles, interviews, opinion pieces) do have to relate to disability in some way.
Breath & Shadow seeks writing in the categories listed below. For all forms, please see the sections on "Notes and Tips," "Manuscript Preparation," "How to Send Your Work to Breath & Shadow," and "Timelines, Compensation, and Contracts" for further details.
Poetry: Any style, any subject matter. Traditional forms (couplets, sestinas, villanelles, haiku, sonnets) are welcomed, as are open, contemporary, or nontraditional forms (including rap and slam). Maximum of three poems per submission or up to 200 lines.
Fiction: Any genre, any subject matter, including, but not limited to, "non-genre"/realism, magical realism, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, slipstream, suspense, experimental, and humor. 3000-word maximum.
Creative Nonfiction: Any subject matter, any style. Can include personal essays or memoirs on specific moments or issues in the author's life. A 3000-word maximum is encouraged, although outstanding longer pieces (up to 5000 words) may be considered.
Drama: Any topic or style, from absurdist to realist to whodunit. One-person shows and performance art also accepted. 3000 words maximum, but shorter is better. You may send a ten-minute play, a monologue, or an excerpt from a full-length play. If you are submitting an excerpt, such as a set of scenes from a two-act play, please include material that sets up the segment, such as the cast of characters and set, or a synopsis of action up to that point.
Nonfiction: The nonfiction category is wide open. We are especially seeking
• interviews or profiles of artists or writers with disabilities, leaders in the disability rights movement, or other individuals or organizations relevant to disability culture;
• reviews of books, performances, art installations, or other art and culture venues relating to people with disabilities;
• insightful commentary on trends or issues facing the disability community, including discussions of disability culture and disability studies, or how mainstream/nondisabled culture portrays or affects people with disabilities. A 3000-word maximum is encouraged, although longer pieces (up to 5000 words) will be considered. If you have an idea for a nonfiction article, we encourage you to query us before you write it.
Notes and Tips
• Keep in mind our name and focus: breath and shadow. We're particularly seeking work that speaks to living, beingness, inspiration, imagination, spirit, expiration, endings, movement of time, shadow sides, hiddenness, mystery, darkness, and casting new light on your subject.
• Send us material that is not appearing in nondisability and/or ableist culture. We love poetry, fiction, drama, and creative nonfiction that explores some aspect of the disability experience that is ignored by the mainstream.
• If your work is angry, hilarious, thought-provoking, offbeat, sensuous, revealing, luscious, controversial, poignant, insightful, sexy, quirky, or confounding, we want to see it. We want poetry that engages our emotions, fiction with memorable characters, drama that is surprising, and articles that engage our intellects. For Breath & Shadow, no subjects are taboo; no topic is off-limits (except those discussed below).
• Breath & Shadow will not publish any work that we deem ableist, sexist, racist, classist, ageist, sizeist, heterosexist, transphobic, exploitative of children, or in any other way exploitative, prejudiced, or offensive to specific groups of people, including slurs based on national origin or religion.
• Here are some other forms of writing we are not likely to publish:
- Stories of "inspiration" that focus primarily on people "overcoming" their disabilities or showing "courage" simply by existing with their disability.
- Singsongy rhyming "Hallmark-card"-like poems, or sugary poems or stories with obvious "morals."
- Medical articles.
- Stories about cures or miracle treatments.
Timelines, Compensation, and Contracts
• Please remember that we receive more submissions than we can publish. And not every piece of writing — even very good work — will be right for Breath & Shadow. If your work is not accepted the first time, don't give up. Keep writing! And try again.
• We will try to get back to you as soon as possible, however, we ask for your patience. We are busy and disabled, too. Please allow up to three or more months for a response. We regret that we cannot provide feedback or editorial suggestions on work we do not accept.
• Payment is upon publication. The pay scale is $5 - $15 for poetry, $15 - $25 for fiction, and $15 - $25 for nonfiction. In the future, as the journal grows, we hope to be able to pay more. In addition to publication and payment, Breath & Shadow will post links to contributors' work on other sites and to their Web site or e-mail address.
• Once your work has been accepted, we will e-mail you a contract for you to sign and mail back. Breath & Shadow asks for nonexclusive rights for one-time electronic publication and ongoing electronic archival publication.
Manuscript Preparation
• Please edit, spell-check, and proofread your manuscript as thoroughly as possible before you send it. (If this is not your strong point, find a friend to help.) If your work has tremendous promise, great appeal, or showcases an underrepresented viewpoint — especially for new writers and youth — we may be willing to work with you to get your piece up to publishable standards. However, our time and energy is limited, so we cannot promise this for most submissions.
• Please send only finished work — this means final drafts. Do not send first or second drafts. Wait to send your submission until you have worked on it and are sure it is as good as it can be. After you have sent a submission, do not send a revision or a "new, proofread" version of the same submission. We receive hundreds of submissions and we cannot keep track of more than one copy of a given piece. Subsequent copies of the same revision will be deleted. If we want a revision of your work, we will ask you for it.
• Fiction, poetry, and drama submissions do not have to specifically mention or be "about" disability; we believe that the author's experience of disability — her/his "disability sensibility" — will come through in the work, regardless of its subject. This is also true for certain types of creative nonfiction. Obviously, for commentary, reviews, interviews, and the like, the disability angle is central.
• Previously published work is accepted. Indicate the name and date of its first publication and that you are the copyright owner. Simultaneously submitted work is not accepted.
How to Send Your Work to Breath & Shadow
• All submissions should be sent to breathandshadow@aol.com.
• Copy and PASTE your submission into the BODY (message part) of the e-mail. Attachments will NOT be read.
• Send only one submission per e-mail, except in the case of poetry. (For poetry, paste up to 3 poems in the same e-mail; make sure that they each have a title and are obviously separated from each other.)
• In the subject line of your e-mail, write "Submission," then your name, the type of submission (poetry, short story, book review, etc.), and the title of the work. For example: Submission, Joe Writer, humor essay, "Ostomy Etiquette." For poetry submissions simply list the number of poems you are sending, not their titles. Example: Submission, Josephine Poetess, poems, 3.
• In addition to your story, article, or poem, please include the following in your e-mail:
- your name;
- a back-up e-mail address (if you have one);
- your phone number;
- your mailing address;
- if you are 21 or under, tell us your age;
and
- a biography of 30-50 words. This is anything you want readers to know about you and may include previous publications, your Web sites, and your e-mail address. If your manuscript does not discuss your disability, please indicate something about your disability in your bio.
• Rules for formatting your submission. If you are sending by AOL, simply format as you normally would, with bold, italics, etc. If you are not an AOL member, we STRONGLY PREFER submissions sent in PLAIN TEXT. To indicate formatting use _underlines_ around words to be italicized and *asterisks* around words to be bolded. Single space your manuscript. Please make sure to use double carriage returns between paragraphs or stanzas. If you have other formatting needs, please include an explanatory note in your e-mail. If you absolutely must send your submission in HTML (if your ISP makes it impossible to send text any other way), we will do our best to slog through the electronic noise.

Eternally Erotic ... the new planned eBook from
www.eternallyerotic.com
Submissions called for until the end of April.
Check www.logical-lust.com/Submit.html
for guidelines and payment details.
Logical-Lust will be powering a simple website called Eternally
Erotic (www.eternallyerotic.com) who's sole purpose will be the sale
of secure erotic e-books which will be published by Logical-Lust.
The intention is to feature anthologies, author collections, and
novels/novellas covering as many aspects and areas of erotica and
erotic poetry that will be feasable.
To begin with will be the 'Eternally Erotic Anthologies,' a series of
genre specific anthologies of around twenty stories per book, each
story between 2,500 and 4,000 words long. This call is for the for
first of these, entitled simply; 'Eternally Erotic.'
Guidelines; I seek powerfully sensual short stories of between
2,500 and 4,000 words. Original, unpublished works only, please. NO
EXCEPTIONS as the e-book will be advertised as having content that
cannot be/has not been seen anywhere else. I also want to make it
clear that for this particular anthology I don't need any BDSM, noir
or otherwise extreme, or poetry. Make your stories strong in the
senses and erotic in the experiences.
Submissions must ONLY be in the form of a RTF (rich text file) and
attached to an email that contains your full authors bio and a
declaration that the material is original, unpublished, and that you
own the copyright. Send your email, entitled 'Eternally Erotic,' to
submissions@logical-lust.com. Any deviation from this will result in
the submission being ignored or deleted. The deadline for submissions
is 30th April 2004. The aim is to have this first e-book on sale by
the end of June 2004.
Payment; For this first anthology it will be in the form of royalties
from each sale and up to 5 downloadable copies of the e-book.
Rights; Logical-Lust will retain first publishing rights, which will
be exclusive for a period of one year from date of publishing. After
this period of time each author is then free to grant secondary
publishing rights with the condition that the anthology is cited as
the primary source of the material.
Once published, the e-books will remain on sale with no maximum time
period set. It will be sold through both eternallyerotic.com and

--- Writing About Sex ---
--- By ... ---
---------------------------------------
Writing about sex...
like most things is a matter
of the right detail. Avoid
getting lost in lists
of parts, in colors
and secretions. From such a mess
the best you can hope for
is laughter. Though that's not
disaster. Sex is a kind
of comedy, where lovers must,
in the final act, discover
just how their wires
cross, where the action
tangles. Next there is the sense
of sound: how the vowels round
in the mouth, how the breath
quickens, how the lines build
the push and rush, the pause, the sweet
anticipation. This is harder
than you'd think, and more prone
to error. It may be better
to skirt the central matter
and dwell in the tenderness
of suggestion. A marriage
is built in bed, but must the bed
be mentioned? Better the kitchen:
the running water, the melting butter,
the softening onion giving itself
to the stew.

--- Kevin's Book Review Column ---
--- Shades of Seduction By Tina Hess ---
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ISBN: 1-58873-300-9
December 2003
http://www.renebooks.com/
Those that have read my reviews here and elsewhere know that I
prefer novels to anthologies or collections. I like the novel format because
it allows the characters to develop more than they can in the short story
format and it allows for more complex plots and storylines. Often, I
find that anthologies or collections are very uneven in tone and style and
as such provide an uneven reading experience. A misplaced story or two can
destroy the work as a whole and ruin the reading experience. However, that
was not the case in this enjoyable collection by Tina Hess.
Broken into three sections using color references, the author
gives the reader a glimpse into the female psyche regarding love and lust.
Each of the eleven stories features a woman in the throes of a relationship
that still exists or one that once did. In some cases, the grip is somewhat
illusionary in that the relationship is no longer physically real
while in others, the need to be a couple once again makes the intervening
time meaningless. In all cases, a background of deep emotional feeling often
coupled with pain comes through as well as the eroticism of the moment.
The first section is titled "Loving Lavender" and the author
states, "As sweet as the scent of lavender on her skin, there's love."(p. 3)
Ghosts and memories of the past, in physical as well as surreal form, make up
the three stories of this section. But even ghosts have physical needs and
love across time and space broken by death is possible.
The second section is titled "Basic Blue." The author writes
that, "Within every woman, lives a basic, primal need to be a bad girl. It's
a fantasy, it's orgasmic, and it burns flame blue inside her." (p. 33)
The four stories of this section revolve around characters that
aren't necessarily in love, but are hot for each other. Characters driven by
lust and the need to be with the man in their lives to the point of
desperation. It doesn't matter whether they have a relationship or not as
lust fuels their minds and their bodies.
"'So what now?" I asked, smiling. "What do we do now that we're
alone?" It was uncomfortable sitting there. The bedspread beneath me was
dampening with my lust for him. Just looking at him was enough to drive me
insane with desire. Only to look and not touch tortured me until I couldn't
think straight any more.'" (p. 35)
The final section entitled "Raging Red" explores the fine line
where fury and dislike, even hatred, can change into lust and passion. As
the author writes, "Anger and desire dwell at opposite ends of the spectrum,
but in the hearts of lovers they rage as one." (p. 53) The four stories of
this section share the common theme where the characters may not like each
other for various reasons but that strong swell of emotion turns into lust
and they willingly surrender to the heat between them.
Written primarily in the first person viewpoint, this work is
clearly aimed at women. In each story, the situation and the back-story
evolve slowly and seductively, gradually building to the passion between the
partners and then sliding into the aftermath. Each story has the same roller
coaster effect and in each case it is done well. Nothing is overtly graphic
in this book and it was a very pleasant read.

Here's a request from another reader; if you think you might be able to help
him, email me at katy@katyterrega.com and I'll forward it to him...
I am a beginning writer who is interested in writing porn. I would like to get the services of an editor or collaborator to help me iron out wrinkles. My work is essentially done, except for reorganization. The topic involves the pouncing of and sexual assault of a young woman. It uses the technique of Rashimon in describing the event through two points of view. It seems to work.
