From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================

Hello everyone, hope your holidays were a rousing success!

We had a great time, but I have to admit I'm glad it's all over. The kids were off for 2 whole weeks and it was fun - we went to see a couple of movies, including The Last Samurai on Xmas day (I was impressed, by the way, since I'm more of a chick-flick afficianado then a, well, a &ick-flick afficianado,) watched more movies at home and of course, the kids played plenty of video games - but they just went back to school today. As much as I love their company, I have a hard time getting my work done when we're all at home together. Now I feel like maybe I can get back on track and get caught up (hahaha!)

Okay, okay, so I'll probably never be caught up; eventually I'll be forced to recognize that but not today. Today I have big plans for all the things I'm going to accomplish in the new year! I wrote an article on that very subject at AbsoluteWrite.com, which you can see here (although it's not up quite yet) and C.B. Potts wrote another (which you'll find below.) I'm always full of ideas at the beginning of a new year; ideas for stories, articles and queries are piling up so fast I can hardly keep up. I hope it's the same for you.

I've got a new section for you today, it's "Market News" and you'll find it before Market Listings. I'll run it when I've got news, which I do today, not much of it good. Also, check out Reader Responses after C.B. Pott's excellent column. Two of our readers have questions I couldn't answer but I figured maybe one of you might be able to help them.

We've also got a great article on writing "Sensual Scenes that Sizzle" from Rie Sheridan and 3 good market listing with looming deadlines. And, even though I've never been much interested in those Yahoo Polls, I am going to send one out a little later.

Correction, I guess I just sent it out now :) I didn't know if you'd have to manually click on a url to vote or if Yahoo would send it automatically...now I do.

Anyway, I'd love your feedback on this subject, this newsletter's getting awfully long and it's hard to put together in email format. Plus I'm thinking it may be getting difficult to read, as well. So please let me know - do you want an abbreviated email version with links to the web version or do you want it to stay the same? - I'll make a decision before the next issue. And for those of you that are actually reading this online, I *think* you just have to click here to vote. (In the time since I've sent out that poll I've found out that you need a Yahoo ID to vote. If you don't have one, just send me an email saying yay or nay and I'll add your vote manually...)

Oh, and I keep forgetting to mention that I give a one month subscription to Sex-Writer.com to every reader who can put me in touch with a new market. Meaning, if you're the first to send me contact info on a market I end up using, you get a month free!

Okay, enough from me, now it's time to actually put this thing out :)

Take care and, as usual, I hope you enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

Katy

--- Sensual Scenes that Sizzle ---
--- By Rie Sheridan ---
====================================

Shakespeare could get away with reducing a wedding night to a snatch of dialogue and a morning kiss goodbye, but it takes a bit more to satisfy a modern audience. So how do you get beyond what one writer calls the “blush factor” and create passion on the page without resorting to graphic pornography? Being of rather high blush-ability myself, I asked a group of bourgeoning romance writers for input. Their feedback included some great tips to bear in mind.

  • Sensuality is key to the creation of mood for these scenes—setting up your writing space with scented candles and romantic music is one way to evoke a scene. Remember to engage all five senses, not only sight and touch as you write your characters interaction.

  • Until you are an expert at writing this type of scene, read widely to see how others handle it. Don’t copy your favorite authors, but get a sense of how they create a mood, handle description, etc. This is especially important if you are submitting to a particular publisher. You want to match the intensity level of their love scenes.

  • Try to imagine yourself in the scene. What would you be feeling? How does your body react to those stimuli? Is your action possible in real life? Can someone really carry their partner through the woods while kissing her and trying to undress her and not drop her on the ground?

  • Pay attention to what the guidelines say an editor or publisher is looking for. Don’t give them more than they want. On the other hand, don’t give them less. If they like a steamy foreplay and then fade to black—give it to them. If you want to continue into the bedroom with your characters and the publisher doesn’t—find another house to send it to. Don’t get a reputation for submitting inappropriate material.

  • Avoid clichés. Most editors are tired of moaning, bodice-ripping, heaving bosoms, and upright manhoods.

Writing sex is not an easy thing. For many publishers it is no longer enough to fade to black at first contact. However, full out graphics must be handled with sensitivity. For those of us who have a little trouble getting that personal on paper, a fellow author suggests writing the scene on brightly colored paper to override the blush factor.

How do you get down to the nitty-gritty? The brass tacks. The graphics. First of all, be creative with your descriptions, and beware of trite phrases and euphemisms or coy symbolism. There is no need to get crude, but there is less tolerance for the “straining manhood” and “womanly nest” of the past. Unless you are recapturing a period mood or style, today’s audience can handle more graphic wording, and expect it if it is tastefully done.

Let’s recap—the most important thing to remember about writing a steamy scene is to be honest with the material. The way I judge whether a scene is working is by how it makes me feel. Does it cause a reaction in me as a reader? If it does, then it is probably working. Set the mood for yourself, and it will be easier to create it for your reader. If you don’t have a lot of experience in this area of writing, model yourself on what has sold in the past. You can tone down easier than you can heat up. Tasteful love scenes can really add fire to a story, and punch to character relationships.

Readers often cite author Julie Garwood as an example for her well written sexual encounters. For a good example of how to integrate the love scene into your action, I strongly recommend her work. Several of Anne Rice’s non-vampiric novels also contain erotic scenes. Besides the extremely graphic fairy tales comprising The Sleeping Beauty trilogy, “East of Eden” and “Belinda” also contain some explicit examples for the would-be writer of steamy scenes.

Do write for the senses. Don’t forget that you have five, and in a good encounter, all are engaged. Set your mood for the reader; paint the room around your lovers before throwing them in bed together. Is there a scent of apples in her hair from the shampoo she used that morning? Does his beard stubble scrape against her cheek? Can they taste the wine on each other’s tongues? Give your readers details to bring them into the world you are creating.

Don’t overwrite the scene. If you are targeting a specific market, make sure that you stay within its prescribed guidelines—research your market before you submit a piece. Most markets looking for steamy content have very specific limits on how graphic their writers should be. Don’t send a publisher more detail than they are willing to accept. For example, the last time I sent out for romance style-sheets (and it was several years ago, so don’t take these as gospel—always send for up-to-date guidelines) Harlequin Temptation was looking for love scenes that were “highly erotic, realistic and fun, but above all emotional.” They expected the hero and heroine to consummate their relationship. Silhouette Romance, on the other hand, stated “Although the hero and heroine don’t actually make love unless married, sexual tension is a vitally important element.” Silhouette Desire was a little more lenient; “The characters don’t have to be married to make love, but lovemaking is never taken lightly.” And Leisure Books spelled out their requirements as “Spunky heroine whose love for the hero never wavers; he’s the only one she makes love with and she’s as passionate as he, although he may have to instruct her in the ways of love, since she’s almost invariably untouched before she falls in love with the hero.” Each line is geared toward a specific segment of the reading public, and you want to be sure that you are in line with the publisher you target for your manuscript.

One final word of advice when you are deciding how far to leave the bedroom door open for the reader—keep in mind the age group you are targeting as well. Most of the readership for the mainstream romance lines is adult. They can handle more graphic sex. However, there are more young adult lines all the time. In these books, it is irresponsible to promote underage sex without presenting the consequences as well. It is even more vital to check for guidelines when working with this age group.

In summation:

1) Be sensual; let your readers experience all five senses.

2) Be specific; follow the guidelines for the market you are targeting.

3) Be responsible; don’t advocate casual sex merely for the sake of a salacious scene.
Remember, all of the markets mentioned above look for the encounters to be within
a committed relationship.

4) Have fun! Remember, this is your chance to indulge all your erotic fantasies….

Cowboy Erotica

Guidelines: www.valeriecrystal.com/cowboy.htm
Contact: valerie_crystal@yahoo.com

Deadline: February 1, 2004

Submission Guidelines . . .

Ride 'em Cowboy!

That's right cowpokes! Valerie will be editing a collection of short stories to be published by Aphrodite Press in the spring/summer of 2004.

"Cowboy Erotica" is the chosen theam for the collection, so get writing and send Val your steamiest tales of cowboy lust!

The guidelines are simple:

1. Obviously your story should include some sort of "Cowboy" theme. What ever that means to you...let's see it!

2. The word count is flexible, but Valerie believes that some of the best erotic stories say it in fewer words, so please try to keep it within 6,500 words.

3. Explicit, arousing sex. Have some fun, take a walk on your wild side and see what happens there!

4. Kinky is fun, but please don't submit anything for this collection which includes underage characters, animals or incest.

5. The pay rate is $10 advance against royalties, one copy of the book, and a share of royalties for first North American anthology rights. Copyright reverts back to author upon publication.

6. Rights are first North American anthology rights, in most cases. Rights and reprints are negotiable, please let Val know if your story has been printed elsewhere.

7. Deadline for submissions is February 1, 2004. Stories will be read beginning now, though, so feel free to send them in early.

Beginners are welcome! Don't worry if you don't have credits to your name.

Valerie doesn't care about your resume, she wants to see a story that sizzles. Who cares if you have published before, so long as you can turn the readers (and the editor) on?

To submit your story, please send it to: valerie_crystal@yahoo.com

Include the words "Cowboy Erotica" in the subject line of your e-mail. Once you receive a confirmation e-mail saying Valerie has received your story, please allow 4-6 weeks for response to your submission.

New Year’s Resolutions

Happy Holidays to All! I hope everyone’s had a joyous season of imaginative indulgences. 2004 looks like it’s going to be a productive – and profitable! – year – I just can’t wait for it to start! To bide the time, I’ve written a few New Year’s Resolutions.

  • This year, I will not stalk the mail carrier. He seems to be getting a little freaked out by me waiting for him at the mailbox every morning promptly at 11:17.35. There has been the faintest note of irritation creeping into his voice lately when he explains that there’s really nothing for me except some bills, a few flyers, an outrageously overpriced literary magazine, nine free sample diapers and one tattered SASE. I just have to believe he’s not withholding all those glorious contracts, checks, and book deals – and this will be the year I do it!

  • I resolve to use my internal editor this year. Some people call that tact, but I prefer the internal editor. That way, when someone says, “I’d love to write a novel, if only I had the time,” I wouldn’t reply, “I’d love to fly to Zanzibar, if only I had wings.”

  • I will refrain from copyediting the local newspaper and sending the revised edition back postage due to the editor. Even if “School Boards Pour Over New Regulations” graces the front page every day for a week.

  • I will not procrastinate. For goodness sake, I’m a porn writer – shouldn’t there be some premature ejaculations of prose sometime?

  • This is the year that I will finally master finding more than one home for every story. If I can sell “Slut Goddess Bambi’s New Boots” once, I should certainly manage to move it twice.

  • I resolve to land a multi-book, six figure, record breaking novel deal with a major publisher. (If I manage to punt on every other promise I make to myself this year, this is the one I’d like to keep!)

  • I vow that this will be the year I bring some of my timid romance-writer friends into the bright, unabashed neon lit world of smut mongering. And I will try to write a story more about hidden folds and less about pussies. Really.

  • I will write an entire erotic piece in dialogue. Not sure who will buy this, but it definitely won’t be Ed Lundt :) Then to restore the balance of nature, I’ll write an entire piece without any conversation at all.

  • I will finish my BE story – before my revisions deforest the entire East Coast.

  • I will learn how to draw so I can illustrate some of my own work. The best part of this will be interviewing the models – anyone interested in posing for my Bear Story, Two for Three, send snapshots, right away. Really.

  • I will learn to view my co-workers, neighbors, and gas station attendants without picturing how they’d look naked and very, very happy. That way I’d be able to pay attention during those important staff meetings, block parties and while driving.

  • No more will I use the names of those folks who tick me off to christen my wayward submissives who keep getting enemas and passed around the biker gang’s clubhouse.
Those are the ones I’ve come up with – largely destined to be forgotten before February. If you all have any you’d like to share, e-mail them to me at ctpotts@juno.com I’ll share the best ones in next month’s column.

Nightflower wrote (after she received her re-sub notice for Sex-Writer.com)

Hi Katy,

Damn straight I'm gonna renew my subscription! I didn't do much this past year, but everything I wrote (five letters and articles) I sold. Your resources are the best! And my husband just got laid off, so I plan to write a whole lot more this year. Thanks for providing such an excellent service to writers!

Editor's note: Five submissions and five acceptances? I'm impressed!

Congrats! If you sent me your Goings On and I missed it, just let me know and I'll get it out asap. Check out my column at http://www.absolutewrite.com/ on - what else?! - writing porn. This week I wrote an essay called "Real Writers Set Goals" which talks about the difference between New Year's Resolutions (which are often about abstaining from one thing or another) and Goals (which are about what we writers hope to achieve in the coming year)...Check it out here - http://www.absolutewrite.com/specialty_writing/porn_101.htm
