=========================

The Xmas/Holiday Flash Fiction contest was a rousing success! So much so that I might even try another soon. Hmm, Valentine's Day, President's Day, St. Patrick's Day (think leprechauns,) the possibilities are endless! But I'll have to schedule it better, this time I had several big deadlines to finish before I could even think about the newsletter and the contest. (See, you knew I'd have a good reason for being late, didn't you?!)

Anyway, as usual for me when I run contests, I had a ridiculously hard time picking a winner, so instead I picked 3, plus an honorable mention. I couldn't help it, they were great stories! Plus I had to enlist the help of Kathy Ptacek (yeah, I really had to twist her arm) of Gila Queen fame as well as my husband to help me narrow the field. But the turnout was excellent and the entries superb! You can read the winning entries at www.sex-writer.com/flashcontest1.html

And on an unrelated note...

You know I don't usually pass along any of the (sometimes) clever stories or pictures that find their way to my inbox, but I thought this one appropriate for a group of sex writers, especially with all the snow so many of us had had lately. (How're you doing out east by the way?) Warning: There is some nudity involved...well, kind of. Check it out here - SnowBlowing

Now onto business. Yes, I know, usually I chatter on endlessly about non-business related topics but hey, it's late and I gotta get this thing out. Not to mention the fact that 6 am comes awfully early these days...

Thanks to all of you who responded to my email a couple of weeks ago, the one that I sent from home because the Yahoo newsletter's being bounced out of many inboxes as spam. I've added several dozen of you to the manual list. Hopefully it's covered now but if any of you are worried about missing some issues, let me know and I'll add you to the list, as well.

We've got a great issue for you. Four great market listings (and some sad news about the demise of yet another porn mag,) a really good article (one that goes against all my teachings, but makes a lot of good points) called Write What You Want by Seducedtocheat, some good Goings On and a review of Cliterature by Kevin Tipple.

And a special thanks to the anonymous donor who chipped in $20 to help cover site costs! For those of you who would like to contribute (this being a free site and all,) there is a $5 'voluntary subscription' box on the order form.

Happy holidays to all of you!

Hope you enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

It's official, Hustler Busty Beauties is no longer in business. It was a great market, paying $500 for witty, busty fiction, and the editor, N. Morgen Hagen, was great to work with. I wish all the best for him and hope that this disheartening trend in porn mags stops now...

--- Write What You Want ---
--- By Seduced2Cheat ---
====================================

While most of the articles on this site and in the newsletter deal with making money I have decided to write about a different topic. I believe there may be other writers out there who are like me and have struggled to break into some of the bigger markets, or are just having trouble putting words on the page. When that happens I tend to find myself becoming discouraged and not wanting to write at all.

I have solved this problem and the solution was easier than I ever expected.

I write what I want.

Now, I know what you're going to ask. Do I make a lot of money? Good question. The answer is.no. That's when I begin to think that if I wrote something for a magazine according to their guidelines and the formula that glares up at me from their glossy pages, maybe I can make more money and eventually quit the Dreaded Day Job. So, I sit at my computer, coming up with the standard 2,000-3,000word story complete with two sex scenes and the obligatory climax.

After writing the story, I reread it, looking for grammatical errors, ways I can make the characters stand out, and polish my prose until it gleams. There is only one thing missing. Me. Having written a 3,000 word story for someone else, I no longer feel invested in the characters, the plot or anything concerning this baby to which I have just given birth. As a result, the story comes out bland and, somehow, false.

I finally realized, after attempting to publish in the major markets, that I have never read a story in those magazines that has actually turned me on. For me, being turned on is a major component of writing an erotic story. So, why waste time writing for a market that doesn't trip my trigger? There was no reason, except the big payoff. For me, that just wasn't enough to keep writing.

So, I began writing stories like I did before I started thinking about money. I focused on my particular fantasies and created my little worlds where the ending is not always a happy one. I write about vampires that feed on emotions and demons that trap people in webs of their own lust. I write about wives who cheat on their husbands while they watch and Wild West outlaws who take advantage of the Marshal's innocent bride. These are just some of the perversions that have come out of my head, and you can bet, there are many, many more!

So, what is to become of writers who shuck the formulas and begin to write for themselves? Believe it or not, there are markets for you. While I have not made enough money to quit my day job, I have had stories published. That's why Sex-Writer.com and Katy Terrega's newsletters are so important to me. In them, you will find markets that are looking for new writers and, more importantly, are willing to post things that don't conform to formulaic standards. I have had stories published by Justus Roux, both on www.justusroux.com and in an upcoming anthology, "Tales of the Paranormal".

I have also taken a page from D.L. Tash and posted stories at WatchingTheWife.com. This site seems to suit me perfectly as it deals with cheating or horny wives exclusively and I have yet to get tired of the different ways I can twist these plots. For stories that don't seem to have a market, at least not yet, I post to free sites like ASSTR and Literotica.com. The feedback I get from someone who likes my story is sometimes better than pay. I also find it easier and quicker to submit online, so I stick mainly to websites or markets that allow email submissions.

Currently, I am working on a longer work of fiction and trying to teach myself how to illustrate my stories. I have earned enough money from my writing to pay for some art programs that I hope will enhance my work. At some time in the future, I plan to have a website of my own.

Most of all, when I sit down to write, I do it for fun. If I have a story that happens to fall into a magazine category, I will submit it, but writing just for the money makes it seem too much like, well, work.

So, if you're sitting down to write a story and your unsure whether it will fall into a specific category or market, think again. Believe me, it is OK to write for yourself. Let yourself out of the box and create any world you feel like. In most cases, the writing will seem more real, more vibrant and when you read that piece of fiction, you will see yourself reflected in the words and you will know that what you have written is true.

YONI Books

Contact: Carrie White
YONI Books -- Submission Guidelines

What we are looking for

YONI Books is open to most subgenres (and cross genres) of erotic women's fiction, including: romance, paranormal, horror, dark fantasy, fantasy, science fiction, contemporary, mythological, sorcery, oh-so-light bondage, thrillers and vampires/immortals. Heterosexual, lesbian, bi-sexual, and menage content or themes are all acceptable if likely to appeal to the female reader. The protagonist and primary point of view should be a female character. Further, all manuscripts must contain strong erotic content. (See our Ratings System for an overview.)

Unacceptable content includes depictions of acts of bestiality, pedophilia, and necrophilia. Bestiality is defined within the context of contemporary earthbound society--aliens, shapeshifters (where shapeshifters are in the same form as the character with which they are mating), etc., are not within the definition of bestiality. Content otherwise considered unacceptable would necessarily be integral to the story before it will be considered for publication.

Formatting your submission
All submissions should be sent in the following format electronically to submissions@yonibooks.com: 12 Courier New double spaced with .8 margins on all sides. Additionally, the top left corner should include your legal name, pen name for the manuscript, mailing address and phone number, email address, and approximate word count. Chapters should begin on a new page and the synopsis must include an approximate word count of the full manuscript. Submit as an MS Word file (.doc) or as a Rich Text Format file (.rtf). (Note to authors using their yahoo! email address when submitting—send as .doc.)

Anthologies
Single author anthologies of any length—submit a single story of 12,500 words or less plus a synopsis for each story in the anthology.

Multiple author anthologies—submit a query with a short synopsis of each story with background on each author, including publishing credits. In general, we are interested only in multiple author anthologies if theme is generated and authors are selected by our editors.

Single title (includes short stories, novellas, and novels)

Single title under 12,500 words—submit the entire manuscript with a synopsis between one to two pages in length.

Single title 12,500+ words—submit the first three chapters (but limited to 30 pages) with a synopsis/outline of no more than five pages.

A note on lengths
YONI Books is accepting single titles from short story (Brief Interlude) length to plus novella length. Lengths are classified as follows:

Brief Interlude -- under 12,500 words

Novella -- 12,500 to 30,000 words

Category Novel -- 30,000 to 45,000 words

Novel -- 45,000 to 75,000 words

Plus Novel -- 75,000+ words

Response times
Because we cannot, as a new publisher, anticipate the volume of submissions we will receive, we cannot accurately predict turn around time on submission. Our editorial policy is to respond to an unsolicited partial submission within two weeks. We currently do not acknowledge receipt of unsolicited submissions. Consequently, if you haven't received any status report on your submission within two weeks, you are encouraged to send a second email to submissions@yonibooks.com, requesting a receipt confirmation and inquiring as to the submission's status. Once we have requested and received a full manuscript, we will acknowledge receipt and provide you with an estimated response time.

Terms
YONI Books licenses all rights to the manuscript for a term of three years from publication date. This specifically includes print rights despite our not currently having a print program in place. Royalties on ebooks sold through the YONI Books web site are 35% of the retail price (list or club) paid by the customer. YONI Books may use other distribution channels (e.g. Fictionwise), with the 35% royalty applying to the post-distribution costs and discount amount. Should YONI Books expand to print publication, print royalties would be separately negotiated. YONI Books provides its author with a specified number of promotional copies of the book and also submits copies of the book to review sites. Authors are not paid royalties on the books sent to review sites. These terms are provided only as guidelines, with parties bound by the terms of the signed contract.

Cover artists
YONI Books is looking for talented cover artists using 2D, 3D, or digital photography technology. YONI Books licenses all rights to the image for three years, with 5% royalties on ebooks (subject to the club discounts and distributor costs and discounts noted under author terms, above) and separately negotiated for print and merchandising (for example, cover art calendars or posters). During the three-year licensing period, YONI Books and its authors are able to use cover art without royalty payments to the artist for such promotional purposes as on the YONI Books web site, as the cover of free author copies of the ebook or print edition, author web sites, banner exchanges on other web sites, print advertisements for the book, and advertisements on distribution or promotional web sites. These terms are provided only as guidelines, with parties bound by the terms of the signed contract.terms of the signed contract.

Because YONI Books licenses all rights to the cover art, Poser/etc. artists must have commercial rights to any textures, backgrounds, etc., used in creating the cover art. Also, you will be required to read enough of the book to accurately portray the characters, their relationship, and the setting.

If you are interested in being a cover artist for YONI Books, send an email to covers@yonibooks.com with a URL to online versions of your work.

Deadline: December 31, 2003

2004 Anthology - The Odd Couple

The 2004 anthology from Amatory Ink will be titled 'The Odd Couple'

Stories should be imaginative, original, as different as the imagination allows and even humour is welcomed. Stories that cross boundaries into other genres are welcome provided they are erotic, plot driven and not just a sex scene.

So, who are The Odd Couple? Odd as in mismatched by age, size, race, creed or from other times in history/future or other worlds? Odd as in a situation they would not normally be in, their lifestyle, outlook on life? It's up to you, but don't be afraid to stretch the imagination, or be off the wall.

Stories must be 3,000 to 4,000 in length and submitted as RTF files attached to e-mails. Anonymous or attachments to blank e-mails will not be considered, neither will bestiality, underage sex or non-consensual violence. As Amatory Ink is currently closed to short story submissions, it is essential to include in the subject line '2004 antho'.

Payment will be £25.00 per story when the antho is published. Closing date is midnight 31 December 2003. Shortlisted stories will be notified as soon as possible after receipt and the final will be advised in January 2004. Publication will be in July or August 2004 in e-book format only.

Deadline: January 1, 2004

Desdmona.com is pleased to announce Desdmona’s Erotic Short Story Contest! This is the second of what we hope will become a continuing series of judged contests featuring the best erotic fiction on the Internet.

In appreciation for the talented authors of erotica out there, Desdmona.com will be offering cash prizes for the winners.

But we also encourage gay and lesbian authors to participate. Be creative and original. Seduce us with your words! The submission deadline for this contest is January 1, 2004, so get those keys a-tapping.

  • Stories must be received by 11:59 PM EST, January 1, 2004. No late entries will be accepted.

6. JUDGING. A pre-screener will check all stories for adherence to contest requirements. Cliterature
By Madelena M. Christian, Editor
2003, Doublewide Press
www.doublewidepress.com
ISBN # 0-9711986-2-4
Large Trade Paperback
$12.00

Written and edited from a woman's perspective, this collection brings together a number of women who, while they each write erotica from different viewpoints, share a common passion for desire. Each uses a different written method to get their point across. For some it was fiction, for others it was poetry and for others it was more of a personal narrative but in each case it works as they write of passion and desire.

As the editor explains in the introduction...

"While putting Cliterature together, I looked for that kind of buzz, a sense I got when a writer was getting off on her own work and even more intriguingly-by her self. When a woman is fully engaged in her desire there's a sort of fearlessness, an urge that overtakes and pushes the work out. Things happen faster. Words hit the page with more power. I know this feeling because I experience it when I write erotica. There's a high I get from working myself into a state of wanting."

For writers, I think this fits under the heading of "write what you know." Clichéd certainly, but those things that we know and care about bring a certain vibrancy to our writing and it shows whether it is erotica as in this case, or something else. The whole point of writing, especially in fiction, is to bring the work alive for the reader so that he or she responds. It certainly works in this case, as this is a very interesting collection. Space limitations prevent me from detailing each and every contribution, so the following three are examples of just some of the enjoyable contributions in the book.

"Iola" by Ms. Cynthia features Iola, new and naive to the world of training. She had applied to serve a Dominatrix and been accepted and she has no idea what is in store for her. Soon she finds out just how personally liberating it can be to be totally submissive. There is a lot packed into this short story of just a few pages.

"Push Play" by Carolyn Caizzi revolves a young coed living in a dorm. She is a lesbian, a bit of an exhibitionist and loves to record her entire life by hidden camera for a college project. After being seen naked on the way to the shower by a female visitor to the dorm, the visitor shows up at her door to continue things. What will the camera see?

"My Cyber-Sexual Master" by Lizbeth Dusseau is a story about a woman learning about what it really means to be worthy of a Master. By e-mail commands, the Master tells her what to do while she is at work and asserts his control; control that she wants, desires and craves until she is left spent. This is a story that will leave you looking at your co-workers a little differently.

While these examples as well as a number of the other contributions feature bondage at some level as a theme or background setting, all the stories, poetry and personal narratives share a commonality of pushing the envelope. In each case, the woman involved is seeking a higher level of pleasure and desire and is willing to do, or allow done to her, what is needed for that goal to be attained. While she may or may not be in control of events, the women depicted are firmly in control of their quest for desire and pleasure.

Written by women, edited by a woman, this collection is clearly designed for a female readership. However, it also works from a male perspective and could be very useful for couples to use as they see fit. At 156 pages featuring twenty-five submissions by eighteen contributors, there is something in here guaranteed to please every reader. This collection is well worth your time to read and enjoy.

Linda Alvarez's first book, the anthology DYKE THE HALLS: LESBIAN EROTIC CHRISTMAS TALEs, has just been published by Circlet Press, featuring stories by M. Christian, Lori Selke, Kate Dominic, Sage Vivant, and others.

Jim writes...

I have just had my 125th story posted on watchingthewife.com. I have been writing for this site for 3 1/2 years.

They are one of the very few paying websites. Lately, they have been having financial problems, and are only paying for hits on stories that are two years or less old. At ten cents per hit, the money isn't enough to let me quit my day job.

---

S. W Hussey (Evangeline) writes...

Kinky-gurl just accepted my latest story, Juicy Concerto in 2D........

This story is the THIRD acceptance, since Verocity.com accepted another story for their January 2004 edition, which makes two stories accepted (one for Dec. and one for January)

---

Terri Pray had a story titled Winters Fire accepted by the anthology 'A Wet Taste of Passion,' which is due out next year.
