Sex-writer.com! Dealing With Editors By D. L. Tash Editors are the bane of all writers. They are also a very necessary evil, since it is they who are the gatekeepers of the industry. There are more terrible rumors and stories about editors out there than there are theories about the Kennedy Assassination. These faceless entities are both worshipped and feared in the writing business and many stories make the rounds about their strange and terrible powers and their awful ability to reject any story on a whim. Yet understanding these people and learning to work with them is essential to any writer who ever hopes to see her or his stories published. This article will clarify and explain this strange literary breed, and clear up some misconceptions about them. First of all, the very title 'Editor' is confusing. An Editor edits, right? So if you send them your handwritten, bloated manuscript, replete with misspellings and grammatical errors, they should be delighted. It gives the Editor the opportunity to do what they do best: Edit! There is another supposition hidden in the title as well: They will pick apart your stories and characters, putting their own ideas and preferences in place of your lovingly crafted words. NO! That's not their job. Yes, they may make editorial changes, like choosing a zippier title or cleaning up your manuscript a little. But they only do that if they have to and if they really like the story. It's a chore, one they would prefer not to do. An editor is, frankly, mis-named, and that's confusing to people outside of the publishing business. There are copy editors and rewrite editors and text editors and other people who do the things "editor" seems to connote. But a managing editor or anthology editor, the kind of editor seeking submissions for books, magazines or even web-sites, doesn't want to do that kind of editing. Yes, they should call this kind of editor by some other name. I agree. I've heard many names for these particular editors, but it wouldn't be a good idea to use these names to their faces. You do want to get published, don't you? So first off, the last thing an Editor wants to do is edit! That's your job. You could think of editors as really lazy people who hate doing their job and expect you to do it for them. They don't want to edit and fix your manuscript. They don't want to find plot holes to fix, unnecessary scenes to cut, or grammatical and spelling mistakes to repair. They want you to do their job for them! They're just a bunch of lazy bastards who hate their work and want you to make their job obsolete. Why should we even put up with these people? Well, there is the one little problem. They're the people who decide to publish our stories and the ones who order someone to cut you a check. No, they don't actually publish your stories or write your check themselves. In most cases that's done by someone else (I told you they were lazy). But these mis-named professionals are the key to writing success. Thus, understanding these Editors who don't edit is very important if you want to make a living as a writer. There are several facts about these people that basically never vary. They are very, very busy: That's a given. Always assume your story is probably the fifteenth (or the fiftieth) to come across their desk that day. Obviously they don't want to futz around with your story. They want to read it, be impressed by it, and not find amateurish writing or grammatical whoppers or misspellings. They are not going to "fix" your errors, and have been known to automatically reject a story that hasn't been spell-checked or contains a grammatical error in the first paragraph. The fact that these are very busy people may explain the next problem you may encounter in your relationships with editors: many editors are not very communicative. You are sometimes lucky to get a rejection slip. E-mails and letters often go unanswered. It can takes weeks or months to hear anything about your precious story. Sometimes you wonder if they even know you exist, but the checks you receive prove they do. Not all editors fall in the last category and if you find one of these gems, you are blessed indeed. But even the noncommunicative types send checks. And that's the bottom line, right? So, an editor doesn't want to actually edit anything. They're too busy to be your buddy or mentor in most cases. And they are notoriously hard to please. So what do they want? How do you work with these mysterious primadonnas of the writing business? Basically, it's easy: Submit tight, well written stories they can put right into an anthology or onto a web-site with few or no changes. Editors want quality, professional work. They expect you, the writer, to do your job to the best of your ability. Demanding, aren't they? This is one important secret of successful writing. Learning to work with editors is how you succeed in the writing business, whether you write about porno or politics, create bondage and discipline trilogies for web publication or pen great novels that could become classics. In any genre, there is always an editor standing between you and success. Accept that, and learn to work with them. I've worked with several. Some, like Ed Lundt, are very hands on and help lead you through the process. Others just post your stories and send you a check. Some are really supportive and give valuable feedback, others just buy your submission and never say much. And others seem to be content to just reject your stories, with no explanation why. But, even when your precious stories are rejected, there is a hint that you should be aware of. Usually the rather cold, "This story did not meet our needs," or whatever phrase the editor uses to infer your story really sucks, is all you get. But it just might have a bit of praise added or a note that your story is good, but needs work. Value these comments. They noticed you! Your story may not have met the editor's particular idea for this anthology, or perhaps it was really pretty good, but not quite ready for prime time. Either way, you got their attention. And getting noticed by an editor is a huge step toward getting published, and yes, getting PAID! It's a hard cold fact: If you want to be a professional writer, you have to learn to work with editors. Yes, those editors that don't edit. Remember, they're lazy: They hate to have to do their job. But if you get good at doing it for them, you have won half the battle of being published. Sending a nice, clean, well written story, blemish free and all ready to publish, plus meeting all the editorial guidelines and sending it in the proper format, is the first step toward success. Your chances of actually getting read are greatly increased, which is the vital first step toward getting your manuscript purchased and published. And that's the whole point of being a writer, isn't it? --- D.L. Tash is well on his way to becoming an International Smut-Lord. His stories have been published (under various pseudonyms) in both America and England, and run the gamut from lightly erotic escapades to some very twisted tales of the darker sides of sexuality A HERO BETRAYED By Jan Springer Futuristic Erotic Romance On Paradise, Women Rule And Men Are Sex Slaves! To my way of thinking, life is hard enough and full of enough nasty surprises that I don't need to read books where the dead walk again or the walls drip blood. It just isn't my thing, but for those that are into it, more power to them. So, normally, I don't touch a book that is marketed as a horror novel or supernatural. However, when I was contacted by the publicist for this novel a few months ago, I was intrigued enough that I said I would take a look. I'm glad I did as this book was well worth reading. I'm sure fans of the horror genre would consider it tame by their standards and it probably is. However, I think it is more of fantasy work than a horror work and for this reader, everything came together and I really enjoyed the read and recommend this book highly. This enjoyable novel revolves around Cassandra. Cassandra is a very talented and sought after erotic dancer as well as a practicing Satanist. After a pleasurable session with a fellow Satanist, Marco, she goes downstairs to use his tanning bed. After using the bed, she dresses and begins to climb the stairs when she is struck by the overwhelming odor of sulphur as if someone is burning lots of matches. She is abruptly transported across time and space to Paris, France during the middle ages. She has been summoned by the Magister Chevalier le Duc and appears naked and alluring before him on his pentagram table. While he does speak in Latin she realizes that she can understand him and soon is able to converse with him. He orders her to seduce the Monsignor of the Holy Inquisition who is in the area attempting to uncover the Satanists. Cassandra is to seduce him and take his virginity, which will rob him of his Before she is to go on her mission to save the Satanists, the Magister decides he needs to try out Cassandra himself. He soon does after marveling at her new powers and Cassandra learns that her powers are addicting as well as difficult to control. But when you have power, why not use it? Cassandra does in a variety of ways before she sets out on her mission. To reveal more would simply ruin a very good book, which just happens to be erotic. While the erotica as well as the horror or fantasy aspects are important to the work, they are secondary to the main theme of power. It has been said that absolute power corrupts absolutely and Cassandra has to fight to retain her sense of self despite the incredible pleasure her powers bring to her and others around her. That fact along with character development, plot, storyline and a wonderful sense of pacing make this novel a must read regardless of the genre. The more at ease you are with the topic you are writing about, the less time you’ll spend growling at the page. Those new to writing can spend a lot of time fumbling around in the dark, trying to find that warm area to write about. So why is that forgotten when starting erotic writing? If you are not comfortable writing it, then don’t write it; the reader will pick up on it. Practice writing short sexy scenes long-hand curled up in bed, or watching a movie, however you're most comfortable writing. If you’re flushed with embarrassment at writing it, then it can affect how you portray the scene. Remember, although you want the reader to become aroused, you also need to enjoy the writing. If you cannot focus on what you are doing, then you are more likely to make the classic ‘cyber’ mistakes. These range from forgetting basic spelling, replacing you with u, I with i. Or worse, focusing only on the images you are getting from writing the piece, which may not be the same images that others get when reading the same piece. Who are you writing for? Men or women? Women are less likely to get enjoyment from reading lines such as "Fucking you hard" or "Banging against her cervix." Most women have had exams, and know that hitting the cervix hurts, damnit! Remember how the human body works when putting scenes together. Female readers tend to notice mistakes and think ‘that’s not physically possible’ or ‘he’s stuck what in where?’ If you’re a man writing for a female audience, get a woman to beta read it, one that can be honest with you. An honest reader is vital; there is little point in handing the story to someone who’ll ohh and ahh at anything you write. Listen to what she tells you and go back and re-write it. Alter the wording then get your tester to re-read it. For woman writing erotica, remember what you like and don’t like about the genre. Don’t be afraid to read through a few novels or good sites. Get a feel for the styles people prefer. If you're writing about BDSM, then use some of the same research sites those in the lifestyle use, such as www.Leathernroses.com and www.midwestfetish.com These two sites cover the basics of BDSM and D/s without sending you screaming for the hills. They also lack the porn pics that can make research daunting. Both sites are written by those in the lifestyle, with information ranging from safety to basics of SM. If you prefer to read offline, try Jay Wiseman’s SM 101. He’s an experienced teacher in the scene, the book is well written and a good basic information guide. The same rules apply for any genre of erotica. Learn about it. Ask around for information sites, or books. Get comfortable with the topic. Find that comfort zone. --- At 33 Terri Pray has found that writing erotica not only appeals to her husband but seems to be welcomed by a growing readership. With seven books on sale via Wicked Castle and one at Punishment Spanking, this English lass is delighting in taking on the expanding world of erotic e-books. http://www.terripray.com OUTLAW LOVERS By Jan Springer Futuristic Erotic Romance A fast acting virus has been unleashed killing a vast majority of the world's female population forcing the creation of a new law: The Claiming Law. "Bethany was approached recently by a new and talented author, Terri Pray. Her stories are very exciting, fantasy sci-fi adventures, very reminiscent of John Norman and Sharon Green. They are also very erotic. Working with Terri, we've started selling her stories through our Spanking Corner, though very soon they will be moved to a new, erotic "romance only" store. For now, if you enjoy erotic fantasy/sci-fi, please check these out. However, do be aware that while very "hot," they are NOT spanking stories." Gothic review continues to accept at least one short story of mine a month and I have also joined their team of Book Reviewers. Also, Abby's Realm has purchased two pieces from me this month. One article called High Heels and Stockings, the other being a piece of fiction called 'Life Long Devotion.' *** Vincent Diamond writes: I just sold a piece to Men of Mystery by Starbooks, due out in spring. Tee hee hee!:) I think that was one listed in your newsletter or on the site. *** Melody writes: Just thought I'd tell you that I had a short story - Friendly Advice - *** Cheyenne Blue was delighted to hear she was the winner of the Logical Lust Flash Fiction contest with "Look At Me Now, Your Holiness". The story can be found at http://www.logical-lust.com. In addition, some of her recent anthology acceptances include "Indigo White, Burnt Umber" which will be in the "Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica", edited by Maxim Jakubowski, and "Forget-Me-Not", which will be in "Best Women's Erotica, 2005", edited by Marcy Sheiner. Both books are due out early 2005. *** Michael Bracken reports recent sales to IN THE BUFF, HUSTLER FANTASIES, *** Alex S. Johnson wants to let his fellow sex writers know he's sold a satirical erotic noir story, "Dirty Blonde," to the anthology, Naughty Detective Stories From A to Z. The book will appear in 2005 from Pretty Things Press. *** Sascha Illyvich writes: My short story collection "Mistress Anna and Other Scorching Erotic Tales" is now out from Renaissance E-books and I just sold "Chik N' Stu" to Abby's Realm. --- Congrats! If you sent me your Goings On and I missed it, just let me know and I'll get it out asap. And if I didn't use your name with your Goings On it's because I wasn't sure you wanted it printed.
