Hello all, hope your autumn is going well :)

Here in Colorado it's been absolutely beautiful - warm days, coolish nights, gorgeous colors - and will continue to be so until the day before (or the morning of) Halloween, at which point it will snow, rain, sleet (or all three.) The temperature will plummet, the winds will pick up and trick or treating will, once again, be a torment for us grown-ups foolish enough to brave the elements so that our children can be bombarded with chocolate.

My daughter, 13, is going as a warrior-elven-princes kind of woman in a beautiful handmade (by her friend) dress and the velvet cloak I made for her last year. My son, 12, is going as a...well...as a solicitor. We have a No Soliciting sign on our door and we're not overly fond of door to door salespeople so my son, in his delightfully tongue-in-cheek way, will don an ugly sport coat, a tie and a briefcase (perhaps we'll also slap a No Soliciting sign on his forehead) and proceed to terrorize the neighborhood. The kids always get a ton o' goodies, because each year the number of trick-or-treaters diminishes and by about 8 o'clock, all the home-owners are desperate to get rid of their candy so they start giving out huge handfuls. (Yes, I will be demanding a portion of said goodies for my duty as chaperone/protector.)

My husband, who likes to dress up for Halloween, will likely put together some bizarre wig, hat, cloak combo that will scare the wits out of the little children he passes. I will, as usual, try to get out of costuming myself, preferring just to don a tall old witch hat. Although I have to admit, the year I went as a homeless woman, huddled under blankets in a shopping cart pushed by my husband (I'd just had foot surgery and couldn't handle the walk on my crutches) was a blast, especially when the neighbors and the cops thought we really *were* homeless people wandering aimlessly about in suburbia...

But enough from me, now onto business...

We've got another huge issue for you today. Five great listings (one of which is a contest,) an excellent article by Diana Sheridan, some really good Goings On, a column (my favorite!) by our own C.B. Potts, lots and lots of Sex-Writer.com updates and I answer a couple of questions in Q and A. Also, I've got new guidelines for submitting to the newsletter or Sex-Writer.com, see Here for details.

As well, for those looking for some quality erotica, I'd suggest "A Hitman For Hannah" by Jan Springer and Lauren Agony. I've only read the first chapter so far and already I'm hooked, I'm sure you will be, too! Check out the book and ordering details below (and our own reviewer, Kevin, will be doing a review of it soon...)

Now, on a totally unrelated note...

Those of you who've been subscribers for awhile know that I rarely pass on informationg that's not related to writing; no Warning! Virus Alert! or funny web sites or jokes here.

But this really is a good cause and it does't cost a penny, plus it only takes a minute, literally, to do. So here's the deal...

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. www.thebreastcancersite.com

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- He's Just A Sex Writer ---
--- By Diana Sheridan ---
====================================

“He’s just a sex writer.”

The speaker? A former sexmag editor. The occasion? The editor, a friend of mine, was now editing something more “respectable” and needed a few good writers. He’d asked me if I could recommend anyone, and I did. But when Mr. Editor recognized one of the names, he uttered the dismissive comment quoted above.

Why the attitude? I think there are two reasons. One, of course, is a prejudicial sense that since sexwriting is less than socially acceptable, everything to do with it—including the writers who perpetrate it—is second-rate at best.

Fie on such thinking!

But the second reason actually has some validity: There are some second-rate writers who get published in the world of sexmags but wouldn’t likely get their work published in other venues. And there are some writers who write fine pieces for the mainstream world but write on automatic when they’re writing for the sexmags.

Do you give it your best shot when you’re writing for the erotica field? Or do you just “phone it in”?

There are plenty of reasons to give it your all.

1 – Because you should always take pride in your work.

2 – Because you shouldn’t let yourself get in the habit of being sloppy.

3 – Because you never know where the editor you’re submitting suck-and-fuck stories to today will wind up tomorrow…and you want him or her to think well of you when she’s trying to think who she knows that might be able to turn in that article on world finance or celebrity marriage or zany inventions.

4 – Because you want the most assignments you can get, or the greatest rate of acceptance of your over-the-transom submissions you can get, and impressing your editor is a great way to do it.

Okay…that brings up the logical question, What impresses an editor?

Funny you should ask. As Gilbert and Sullivan wrote, “I’ve got a little list.”

1 – Above all, give it your best shot. Don’t write hurriedly, or with half a brain, or when you’re too tired, or any similar sin. If you’re not sure of the spelling or correct usage of a word, look it up. Be sure your grammar and punctuation are spot-on too. It’s your work—even if you are writing it under a pseudonymous byline. Don’t slough it off.

2 – Proof your work!

3 – Write hot! Unless you’re writing a how-to, a poem, or something else less common in this field, your aim is to turn on the reader, and you can do that best by being your most erotic. I hope you know how—in any case, this article isn’t a primer on how to put heat in your work. Remember that your Number One mandate is to cause a stirring in the reader’s loins, and if your story fails to do that, the editor won’t like it no matter how clever, well written, or perfectly spelled and punctuated it is.

4 – If it’s a first-person story, make your writing sound believable. Make your viewpoint character sound real. This does not mean writing in a sloppy way because your character is an uneducated person. This does not mean peppering your story with “ain’t”s and “gonna”s and “wanna”s—all of which are fine for dialogue but not—at least, in many editors’ eyes—for narrative. But if your viewpoint character is a high school dropout, don’t give him a PhD’s vocabulary. You can have him speak in mainly shorter sentences using no $25 words, without resorting to double negatives. And of course, in dialogue you can use such conventions if they’re appropriate to the speaker.

5 – If the story is wall-to-wall sex, keep it hot throughout, keep the sex scenes varied, and try not to write the same thing you’ve written 50 times before. (Yes, I know. As a friend of mine once said, “How many ways can you say, ‘I fucked her with my big fat dick’?”) But there are different ways to describe any single sex act—and there is a variety of sex acts to describe. Don’t forget the foreplay, too—it will titillate your readers as well as your characters.

6 – If the story isn’t wall-to-wall sex, the same things I just wrote above apply again, but in addition, now, you can make your story more interesting—and keep it from being the same-old-same-old—by offering your readers and your editor a new and different character in a new and different situation. There are certain scenarios that are not only tried and true but tired and true. Hitchhiker pickup stories—especially in gay porn—are a popular staple, for example, and editors will buy a certain number of them over a period of time just because they’re popular with the readers. But how about giving your character a different scenario, a different situation, and a different personality than the average suck-and-fuck setup? You’ll pique the readers’ interest and score points with the editor as well.

In summation, then, do your best. Remember, this is writing. You won’t win the Nobel or the Pulitzer, or any other major award for it; it won’t make you famous—especially if you’re not using your right name; and you won’t get rich. But your work can help you to pay the rent or mortgage, give you a sense of satisfaction…and, if the editor thinks well of your creative output, it just might be a steppingstone to writing in a totally different genre, where more money and prestige are available.

Or do you want the editor to say of you, “He’s just a sex writer!”?

# # #

Diana Sheridan isn’t just a sex writer. Under her right name, she’s had many books published. As Diana Sheridan—and a variety of other pseudonyms—she’s been writing for and editing sexually explicit publications since 1969.

Sex and Laughter

Contact: Susannah Indigo

DL: November 1, 2003

Editor Susannah Indigo is currently seeking erotic short fiction for the anthology project "Sex & Laughter," which will be published by Samba Mountain Press in the spring of 2004.

We are looking for genuinely humorous tales that combine the truth of our erotic lives with the inherent silliness/outrageousness of living out our ordinary days (and nights). The humor should be intrinsic to the story, rather than be forced or absurd (no punchlines, slapstick, etc)-unless it's really funny, and then we won't care how you get there!

A few samples of humorous stories to our taste are available to read online:

Pig Heaven

Ratatouille

Give us intriguing, original stories with memorable characters and situations. Throw in a little music and light, a touch of brilliant sanity, some unending humor and lust, but most of all, make us smile, and make sure we can feel your source of humor and heat right through the pages.

Some of the books published by Samba Mountain Press include the From Porn to Poetry" series, Blue The Color of Desire, Many Kisses Stories of Dominant Love," and the upcoming Electric Ink: The Best of the Online Journals series (formerly e2ink). Sex & Laughter will be the opening volume of a continuing series of themed anthologies.

Story length approx. 3,000 to 6,000 words

Deadline for submitting November 1, 2003

Payment $75 for new work, $25 for reprint rights

Submissions should be sent to Susannah Indigo via email at sex&laughter@sambamountain.com either pasted in the email or attached as a .doc or .rtf file. Put "Sex & Laughter" and your story title in the subject line. Include a short cover letter in the body of the email with a bio and your contact information. DARKER PLEASURES - WRITING GUIDELINES AND TERMS OF USE

About Darker Pleasures

Darker Pleasures is a niche fetish site that features stories and photographs specializing in female bondage with a focus on breast torture. Our site is intended for those people who either enjoy reading and seeing breast bondage and torture or who are actively involved in the BDSM lifestyle. Our audience tends to be well read and educated and knows a great deal about our subject matter. Quality of work is very important to us. For that reason, we use high resolution, well-lit photos, attractive models, and well-written erotic stories. We also solicit feedback from our members through the use of surveys and forums, and use this feedback as core material for new stories or to continue popularly requested stories.

We publish one monthly photo-illustrated story that ranges from 4000 - 6000 words and is matched with several galleries of custom photographs, a selection of which are that are spaced throughout the story to illustrate the text. The subject matter of the story provides the theme around which the photo shoot is centered. In addition to the monthly feature, we publish several text stories in the same word count range.

Blood Lust: Gay Vampire Stories

Contact: M. Christian

Deadline: November 1, 2003

Blood Lust: Gay Vampire Stories
Edited by M. Christian and Todd Gregory
To be published by Alyson Books

M. Christian and Todd Gregory are seeking erotic short stories for the anthology Blood Lust: Gay Vampire Stories.

An eternal figure of both sensuality as well as horror, vampires have entranced readers ever since their first contemporary appearance in Bram Stoker's Dracula. For gay men, vampirism has become a particularly attractive and alluring icon. Cynics could very well say it's because vampires remain forever young and beautiful (certainly appealing) while others might say it's simply identification with another group of outsiders. Whatever the appeal, Blood Lust will be an anthology celebrating and exploring gay men's fascination with the dark sensuality and seductive power of the vampire.

Writers are encouraged to explore the myth and allure of vampires and gay male sexuality as well as deconstruct and play with the overall theme. Stories should always be erotic -- or at least sensual -- and respectful of gay male sexuality. Stories should also be written with literary flair, contain interesting characters, and be unique enough to stand out from any previous depictions.

Stories: 3,000 to 7,000 words
Deadline for Submissions: November 1, 2003
Payment:$50 for reprints, $100 for original work
Rights: First North American Anthology Rights

Submissions should be sent to:

M. Christian
41 Sutter Street, #1012
San Francisco, CA 94104
No email submissions for this project, please.

============================================

There was a cold edge to the air, but the sun was shining. A breeze kept any late-season mosquitoes away. A perfect fall day to spend in the apple orchard with one’s family.

We filled bucket after bucket with crisp red Macintoshes. We rode in the tractor-pulled wagon. We even stopped at the petting zoo, and paid some extravagant ransom so our youngest could paint a face upon a rather misshapen pumpkin.

When we got home and the produce was put away, I couldn’t wait to sit down at the computer. My fingers fairly flew as I wrote “The Apple Pickers” – based only on a fleeting glance of the Jamaican migrant workers who worked harvesting the part of the apple crop not reserved for the “Pick-Your-Own” weekend crowd. It is probably one of the best stories I’ve written in the genre to date – it sold to the very first editor who looked at it – and one that I thoroughly enjoyed writing.

To this day, I can’t drive past that orchard without a chuckle, and a little nod of gratitude to Mako, Cliff, and Mitch – the characters who “inhabited” it, for at least a while. They taught me a truly valuable lesson: That eroticism is everywhere.

I’ve read the same advice columns you have, the ones that tell you to create a “writing space”, using music, decor, and calming windchimes to make you a better writer. One notable one, geared toward writers of erotica, recommended wearing lingerie while you write and keeping sex toys on the desk.

This wouldn’t work particularly well for me – my desk is in a corner of the living room, and I just know that ben-wa balls would have some exciting application in the Fisher-Price Circus world that my daughter lives in. And as for lingerie? I work a 40-hour week, minimum, before I sit down at my computer to write a word. If I go through all the hassle of putting on a corset, garter belt, and five-inch fetish heels, I guarantee that typing is the very last thing that will be going on!

The time factor has one other aspect to it as well: If I spend all my time arranging my desk, hanging inspirational quotes, and centering my chakras, that leaves very few minutes to actually write. So what does one do, if one wants to produce tons of great, salable copy – in the shortest time possible?

There’s two simple steps. One, you live your life. Two, you pay attention.

For example, you go to work. There’s a new deliveryman, dropping off this week’s supply of copy paper. He’s not the most talkative guy in the world, but boy, he does have some tremendous calves under those UPS Brown shorts. And there’s a twinkle in his brown eyes – even if they are centered in a rather nondescript face.

But you’re a writer! Give him a sparkling personality, looks that Charlie Sheen would rip his arms off for, and an insatiable lust for the girl at the reception desk. Twenty minutes and an empty supply room, and you’ve got a story.

That’s the beauty of this theory. The prosaic, everyday life we all experience is rife with erotic experiences – if you look for them, or spend a little time making them up. One of my very first sales, Mr. 4 O’clock, had its genesis when a motorcyclist cut me off on my drive home from work. In itself, nothing. Probably happens 600 times a day. But then you ask the questions: Why was this guy in such a hurry? Ever one to yield to road rage, I wondered what the cops would do when they caught Mr. Speed Demon. That little quirk that makes us all porn writers then led to what would the cops LIKE to do when they nabbed him – and led to the second question, Why not? Writing that story was simply transcribing the images that flowed through my mind in answer to that question.

The other benefit to this practice is that it makes the days fly by. There are millions of people in the world, and on an average day, it’s easy to see a few hundred yourself. Chances are, the majority of these people have had or will have sex at some point during their existence – imagining that will give you some great copy. Even if it doesn’t, it will ensure that you never ogle the waitress quite the same way again.

--- Q & A ---
===========================================

Several people have written asking about Penthouse. I don't have an official statement yet but it's not looking good. As far as I know they're headed into Chapter 11 and I really can't tell you the status of the magazines except that, as one reader pointed out, the last issue of Penthouse that was published was the August issue.

The biggest loss for us erotica writers, of course, is Penthouse Variations which, as another reader pointed out, was "sexually explicit without being crude."

I'll let you know just as soon as I hear anything concrete.

---

...Are there are any rules for submitting stories to magazines via email if they are not explicit in the writer's guidelines? I have been placing the text in the body of the email with a double line between paragraphs and no indentations for each paragraph(the same as the format of this email). I just want to make sure my format is as correct as possible.

There are no set rules for email submissions although the format above (single spaced, except between paragraphs, which are double spaced) is commonly used.

I usually use a very short "cover letter" at the beginning, with a Dear Mr. NameOfEditor salutation, then I indicate that I am pasting my submission below. I don't tend to do the whole...

Mr. Editor
Publication X
Address 1
Address 2

Dear Editor,

Beginning of cover letter...

...in email submissions, like I do with hard copy submissions. In my experience, when it comes to email, editors prefer brevity.

If the market doesn't specify whether they want attached docs or pasted submissions, I usually do both, and give the editor a choice.

But I am just as polite and professional as I am with hard copy submissions; this is my first (and maybe only) chance to make an impression and I want it to be a good one!

---

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)
