From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================

As I write this, I have my trusy Mac laptop to my left, my old computer in front of me, and my new-ish computer to the right. Why, you ask?

Because after the last crash 2 weeks ago, I had yet another that rendered my new-ish computer communication-less. Which means I need the Mac for online stuff and email, the new-ish comp (which still works great except for that pesky communication thing) and my old comp for working on the newsletter and Sex-Writer.com.

Can you say schizo?

Well, that's pretty much how I feel about now, trying to divide my time between three computers. A different identity on each, different info, different capacities...you get the idea.

But after I'm done here, I'm going to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows on the main comp, which may (or may not, given my luck with computers) work. Of course, I've never done either of those things by myself and it will mean that all the info will be wiped out (yes, I'm double checking those saved disks) so wish me luck. If you don't hear from me in two weeks, assume I am rotting in Computer Hell...

I did manage to put together a pretty decent issue for you today; we've got 4 great listings, a good Goings On, an informative article on edting your manuscript by D. L. Tash, a book review from Kevin Tipple and a question about email submissions in Q and A. The one thing I haven't gotten to yet is the Sex-Writer.com updates but I'll get those taken care of as soon as everything returns to normal around here.

Bwwaaaa-haaaaa-haaaaa! Only if you consider dead mice in the washing machine (courtesy of the cat) and stacks o' porn mags and various other sexual playthings on the shelves (courtesy of my profession) "normal."

Ah, yes...but anyway...

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

Katy

--- Editing Your Dirty Stories ---
--- By D.L. Tash ---
====================================

Okay, you've finished your latest dirty tale. It's an arousing story, with all the requisite sex and some good characterization. Its got enough plot to keep your interest between the 'hot' parts.

Now all there is to do is spell-check it and send it off, right?

Not so fast.

You may have a very good story. But with a little work, you could make it a great story, or at least a memorable one.

And that's where editing comes in.

First, lets look at the problem with spell-check. Running spell-check makes sure everything in your story is a real word. It's not necessarily the right word, or the best word, or anywhere close in meaning to the word you meant to use, but it does appear in the dictionary somewhere.

This is why spell check may catch the most egregious spelling errors, but misses a lot of glitches. Like when you wrote 'your' and meant 'you're.' Or wrote slid and meant slide. Or when you shifted out of First Person into Third Person and back again. Or referred to your heroine as the name of another heroine in another series you're also working on. Or using the same word or phrase over and over again.

I've done all these things and lots more. But as I become a better editor, I am learning to catch these problems. They're often not massive problems, but they interrupt the flow of the story and make you look less than professional. Ed Lundt, a New York editor who publishes Breast Expansion stories (yes, I've actually sold him one!) provided me with an invaluable tip to find these problems and others like them.

Read your story aloud. It's amazing how translating your typed words into speech catches all kinds of little glitches you had missed. Just this one step can make a big difference in improving the flow of your story and catching a lot of errors you just skimmed over while reading it and didn't notice.

Okay, so you've gone over it carefully and read it aloud. You've probably caught a lot of little, annoying errors and your story is now relatively free of these problems. I say relatively, because no matter how careful you are something will probably slip by you. That's life. We're looking for high quality here, not perfection.

Now what do you do?

Put it aside for at least two or three days and let it mellow. A couple of weeks is better. Then reread it, just for pleasure.

Parts of your latest masterpiece may leap out as really good stuff. But others may seem weak, or hard to read, or confusing. So fix them. This is not drudgery: it's your chance to infuse your story with that magic that marks a good writer.

A good little scene can become a great little scene. Places where the story stalls can disappear entirely. This makes the strong parts of your story take center stage, while getting rid of spots that seem awkward or unnecessary. A good edit can transform a story from mundane to smut masterpiece in very short order.

I'll admit, sometimes this is tough. Sometimes it's really hard to edit out something you like, especially people, even if they do nothing to further the plot. You have a minor character who is cute or funny or sexy, but you find they really don't do anything for the story. And you hate to cut them out entirely.

The great thing is, you're not killing them by taking them out. You're just setting them aside, perhaps to be re-cast in their own story, or become an important facet of another plot somewhere else. It's actually do that character a favor by not throwing them away in a nowhere role.

All righty, then. We’ve trimmed all the excess from the story and it’s getting really smooth.

Now take another hint from Ed Lundt, whose line "working the kinks out of (or into) your story" has become a standard rule for my editing work.

Editing your story isn't just taking out the obvious mistakes and trimming out the slow parts. It’s also a process of building up the muscle of your story. You can punch up the good parts while you cut out the flab. It makes your story stronger, sleeker and more appealing. In fact, writing your first draft could be considered creating a foundation to build on, a rough shape which can then be sculpted into a really effective finished product.

Editing suddenly becomes of paramount importance and a joy to do. It's not the scut work after the story is finished, but the actual creation of the real story out of the bare bones you have uncovered in the first draft. It's the molding of the raw material into a finished product that reads smoothly, has strong characters and a solid plot and, in the case of erotic writing, also has a strong sexual component that permeates the tale.

So where do you begin? Take an old story, maybe something that just wasn't going that well, and reread it. This alone may surprise you. I've reread stories that I'd given up on, thinking they weren't going anywhere, only to discover they were quite good: I'd just become tired of them over time. Or maybe they had a flaw in the beginning that became so magnified it was ripping the tale apart. Going back and removing the problem suddenly brings the story back on line.

Look at the characters. Are they interesting, real people? Or are they stick figures you put through the paces of a sex act in an attempt to stimulate your audience? Real people having real sex is sexy. Stick figures having sex is: Well, stick figures having sex.

Is your story strong or could it be stronger? Are there little offshoots that don't lead anywhere? This is common in my writing, since I seldom work from an outline. I create these little 'hooks' to hang plot complications onto or introduce character depth with later. Some of these hooks I use, others just remain behind, forgotten and abandoned. Cutting the unnecessary verbiage for an idea that never went anywhere makes the story flow much better.

As you trim the fat, look for muscle you can enhance. An added line or two can take an okay scene and make it sizzle. Take a good line and make it better. Replace a mundane word with a more descriptive one. Take two 'okay' paragraphs and blend them into one dynamite paragraph that propels the story along even better. "Kick it up," as Emeril likes to say.

Soon you will find your story has taken on a virility it may have lacked in the first draft.

Okay, here is another hint from Ed Lundt. And it’s a doozy.

Because Ed gave me a very practical yet brilliant suggestion to make sure your sex scenes really sizzle, whether it's the first time around or in re-edit. The best way to structure your sex scenes is to make them parallel (gasp!) the sex act itself.

Start with foreplay. Bring your reader to a nice plateau. Keep them there a little while. Then kick it up a notch. It's sexier, it's hotter, and its wonderful. Then, suddenly, it gets even better! And you're racing along, at a high level of arousal and then..!

WOW! Was it good for you too? Now we slow down a bit, and you can get in a little plot or character development while you and your reader recuperate. Then the story begins to build again.

Foreplay, arousal, more intense arousal, really high arousal and orgasm. Then a little break. Every sex scene should be written with this wonderful secret in mind. Face it, if you're doing your job, your reader is going through these exact same stages. They may actually be masturbating or just going through the steps mentally, but either way these stages are there.

And if you recognize this and use it in your writing, you will be incorporating that deeply ingrained natural sexual progression into the flow of your story. And a mundane sex scene becomes a masterful sex scene. A story is not finished until it's published. And even then it can be reedited: It happens all the time. Even an old story can be cleaned up, streamlined, renamed and made new again.

So when you find yourself at the end of your latest creation, don't rejoice too much. And don't despair if it's not what you'd hoped it would be. Because the story is not finished.

It has only just begun.

Best Women's Erotica 2005 Guidelines

This new series was launched by Cleis Press in December 1999; several editions are now available in bookstores. I strongly suggest that writers refer to these or to my other anthologies in order to get an idea of what I'm looking for. Send submissions for the next edition between October and March. Deadline for each year's edition is March 31st.

Stories must be either previously unpublished, or published in the past year only. (Please indicate where and when stories have been published.) Payment is $100 per story. I am an equal opportunity editor and welcome the viewpoints of all gender and sexual orientations--heterosexual, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered. Authors must, however, be female. No poetry or essays please; fiction only.

What makes an erotic story qualify as "Best?"

  • (1) Literary quality: well-drawn characters and plot, vivid descriptions and accomplished writing style

  • (2) Explicit, well-written, arousing sex written with originality rather than relying on clichés

  • (3) Some insight into the sexual, emotional or relationship dynamics between the characters (not an absolute requirement, but strongly recommended).
Submit stories no longer than 20 pages, DOUBLE SPACED, HARD COPY, size 12 font with contact information to:

Marcy Sheiner
4096 Piedmont Avenue # 136
Oakland, CA 94611-5221

ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENTS FROM WHICH I DO NOT WAVER:

  • I do not read e-mail submissions unless I personally request that an author send it via e-mail.

  • I do not read manuscripts that are hand-written or single-spaced.

  • I will not pay for postage due.

  • I do not read submissions written by men.

  • I do not discuss stories over the telephone unless I have initiated the communication.

  • If you do not include a sase and/or an email address, you will not receive a response.

  • For submissions sent from outside the U.S., I prefer U.S. stamps to coupons on your SASE.
Finally, I strongly suggest that you spell-check and proofread your manuscript before submission.

Marcy Sheiner is the editor of HEROTICA 4, 5, 6 and 7; THE OY OF SEX: Jewish Women Write Erotica; RIPE FRUIT: Well-Seasoned Erotica; and the BEST WOMEN'S EROTICA series. She is also the author of SEX FOR THE CLUELESS and PERFECTLY NORMAL: A Mother's Memoir.

--- Kevin's Book Review Corner ---
--- By Kevin Tipple ---
============================================
Birth Of A Lesbian, Demise Of A Lady
By Eve Locke
2002 - X-R Press/Virtual Publishing Group
Large Trade Paperback

As this novel opens, ex-Special Forces and Police officer and now Private Detective Jack (no last name, just like all the other characters) is attacked and manages to subdue his assailant while having many arousing thoughts of the various women in his life. He is the stereotypical redneck in thought and deed, all the way to his rebel flag in the back window of his pickup truck, as he tools around Fredericksburg, Virginia. After subduing the suspect and hanging him outside his office window above the street so that he will talk by morning, he drives over to see a new lady by the name of Bobby Jo, who isn't exactly thrilled to see him (or his obvious arousal.) Flirting from the moment you meet with your date does not always work.

"The fucking cop was really pissed off. Go outside and jerk-off in the fuckin bushes, yeah, come on. With that he unzipped his fly and let the throbbing chunk of Alabama steak loose. It was a sight to behold, and then he began to stroke it, "No, no, no," she said, and took hold of his sleeve and lead him through the door and down the steps towards a bunch of wild-looking rhododendrons. "And don't forget, I want to dance tonight, so don't use all your energy. Hurry up." The poor redneck cop was so upset he got his cock tangled in the branches. Some bugs were crawling on it, and it hurt to dislodge himself. And suddenly his erection crumpled, freeing himself from having to humble himself in front of this back-country degenerate. Poor Jack, he gathered what was left of his pride and gently guided his wounded soldier boy to a safe hideout." (Page 8)

Once freed from his predicament, Jack and Bobby Jo go off to dinner and dancing at a local club. This sets the stage for meeting numerous other first name characters of both genders and numerous persuasions. They all share strong libidos and a willingness to act out their fantasies, for real or only in the imagination and memory, although they are stereotypical and very shallow. The reader is left to follow these characters from place to place as they do whatever it is that they want to do while they think about the moment, other partners, issues or whatever.

This is best described as stream of consciousness type novel where the normal paragraph boundaries do no apply. Complete with the occasional typo, paragraphs full of run on sentences as well as multiple points of view, stereotypical characters using or referred to under various names, as well as numerous other problems make this novel a difficult read at best. While the sexual scenes are often and graphic, they do not outweigh the numerous problems the material has or the obvious fact that no editor was used at all in the making of this novel.

--- Q & A ---
===========================================

I notice that the standard text outlining submission methods to magazines is by mail, using an SASE. If an editor's e-mail address is available, is it acceptable to send the editor an e-mail politely requesting Guidelines or to submit a small manuscript for consideration?

Well, that depends on what else the guidelines say regarding submissions.

If they don't specifically say "no email submissions" or "postal submissions only" I generally assume that it's probably okay to send something via email. But that doesn't necessarily mean you'll hear back from the editor; many of them still don't work much with email. Not to mention that fact that some editors want submissions pasted into an email and will refuse to open attachments and others want specific attachment formats.

If I'm unsure I'll usually do one of two things:

Send a polite email mentioning that the guidelines are unclear as to whether or not email submissions are okay, and asking for permission to send said submission.

Or

Send a polite email mentioning that the guidelines are unclear as to whether or not email submissions are okay, and then pasting your submission into the email and sending an attached Word Doc. If I do it this way, I also mention that I'll be happy to send a snail mail submission if they prefer.

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Articles And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
