From The Editor

Happy second day of fall to y'all!
Not that I'm happy about the change of season, as you surely already know (seeing as how I can't seem to shut up about it.) But even I have to admit that here in Colorado the weather's been perfect; with cool-ish nights and still-warm days. Of course, I know that any day now Mother Nature will give one of her hearty ha-ha-fooled-you-again laughs and dump about a foot of ice and snow on us, but right now it really is gorgeous.
However, the weather does not justify the two day delay in getting the newsletter out. But I do have a good excuse.
See, some people can't wear watches; no matter how careful they are, their timepieces always stop or break. Are these people blessed/cursed with some bizarre, personal magnetic frequency? Nobody seems to know. But it does appear that I'm that way with computers; it doesn't matter how good my computer is, it always crashes, and crashes hard. (So, how many full-blown crashes does this make since I started the newsletter? Six? Eight?)
The good news is that I had some kind of premonition (perhaps because the computer was getting progressively less reliable) and spent an entire day saving all my data to CD (6 of 'em!) Perfect timing, because less than an hour later the thing was dead.
The other good news is that all it needed was a good hard drive scrub and a reinstall of the operating system. Well, that and endless hours of work to get it set back up. The bad news is it's still cutting out (and showing me that vile blue screen of death) on a regular basis. But hey, it could be worse! (Knowing my crashes, it could always be worse...)
So, we're back in business and only about a week behind...
We've got a huge issue for you today; a great column by C.B. Potts
on that porn/erotica staple - the "virgin" story. (Speaking of which, her new book, What I Didn't Know, a compilation of her incredibly informative essays, is now available! See here for more details.) Plus we have an essay by yours truly (from Porn 102) on how to catch an editor's attention. We've also got some great market listings (including one for - yes! finally! - scriptwriting,) several excellent Goings On and a question about when to give up on a manuscript in Q and A. (Check out the classifieds, too; NaughtyFlixxx.com has some great deals on DVDs...)
Oh, and one more thing. This is not really newsletter related but I wanted to pass it along anyway. It seems that Google has a kind of 'reverse look-up' service now wherein you type a phone number into the search box and are rewarded with the person's name and address. You're also given directions to the person's house, courtesy of MapQuest. If you, like me, would rather that this info not be available to just anyone and everyone, all you have to do is enter your phone number, then click on the phone next to your name and follow the removal instructions.
Okay, enough from me, onto the good stuff...
As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- Grab 'Em By The Throat ---
--- Katy Terrega ---
====================================
Reprinted From Porn 102
Katy Terrega, determined to make the sale, reached through virtual space and grabbed the intended editor by the throat. Far from offended by her bold (if viselike) grip, he was instead taken pleasantly off guard. Not able to resist the pressure, he delved quickly into the body of the lead paragraph.
His attention thus secured, Katy allowed her grip to relax, if only slightly, as she proceeded to tell her story.
~
And to think I was going to start this column with “Writing a good lead is as important in porn as it is in any other genre.”
Now, some of you might have continued to read, even in the face of extreme boredom, assuming I’d get to the juicy part eventually. But most of you would have yawned and then clicked your way right off of the page.
An editor, charged with keeping his readers’ best interests (not to mention their pocketbooks) in mind, is no different. As a matter of fact, an editor is even less likely to continue perusing a listless piece than is an average reader. Readers can take a chance on a dull story, they’ve lost nothing but a few moments of their time if it goes nowhere. An editor, however, has a vested interest in each and every piece that comes across his desk. It’s his reputation, and likely his paycheck, at stake, so you don’t dare bore him. He’s probably got a whole bunch of articles waiting to be attended to and he’s not going to waste much time on one that doesn’t start off with a bang. At best, you’ve got a paragraph to wow him and convince him to at least take a longer look at your piece.
In that first paragraph you’ve got to do several things. One of your most important goals is to show off your writing skills. An editor will look no further if it’s obvious that he’s dealing with an amateur. So take the time to craft that opener to perfection. Pull out all the stops as far as sentence structure and grammar. Make sure that your sentence lengths are varied, your tenses are consistent and that each sentence starts off differently than the last. Of course it goes without saying that you’ll need to edit well, also. Nothing like misplaced periods and mistakes in capitalization to turn an editor off.
You’ll also need to infuse that first paragraph with the tone of your story or article. Is it a straight-talking, graphic story, or a more thoughtful piece, full of nuance and evocation?
No matter what your story’s bent, you’ll want to let the editor know right away what he’s about to read.
The basics of setting, plot and character should be included in your lead, also. Readers (and editors) want to be able to place all the action before they settle in for a good read.
But don’t just “tell” your readers where, how and with whom this story is going to take place. You have to “show” them.
For example, a fiction piece about a man obsessed with his neighbor’s pretty feet could start this way:
“I live next door to Annabelle and she has the prettiest feet of any girl I know. I like to watch her while she sunbathes in the back yard. Sometimes I think that I’m getting obsessed because I like to look at her so often. I even dream about her.”
Or, if you actually want to sell this piece, you could start it another way:
“It was the delicate arch of Annabelle’s left foot that was my undoing. I was drawn to the finely boned curve - gleaming with a hint of suntan oil - as she sunned herself that hot July day. Peering through a gap in the wooden slats of the fence that separated our yards, I realized that Annabelle’s foot was quite likely the loveliest of any I’d ever seen. Of course, I didn’t know then that it was to haunt my dreams for many months to come.”
In the above paragraph I’ve tried to include all the necessary bits of information that will inspire an editor to continue reading. I’ve set the tone via the narrator and his rather flowery, obsessed speech, plus I’ve given a voyeuristic sense to the story. I’ve indicated the setting, or at least the point at which the action starts. And I’ve also given a hint of the plot; we know that dreams of his neighbor’s feet are going to complicate this man’s life, even if we’re not sure how yet. Hopefully the editor will be intrigued enough to want to know how this story is going to play itself out.
That’s your job as a writer, to convince first an editor, then a reader, that he does, indeed, want to find out what happens to these characters. Don’t be afraid to grab ‘em by the throat first thing; while it may seem a rather aggressive way to do business, they’ll thank you for it in the end.

Best S/M Erotica 2:
Even More Extreme Stories of Even More Extreme Sex
A book of the best gay, lesbian, bisexual, and straight erotic S/M stories, to be published by the Venus Book Club, with a subsequent edition by Black Books
Continuing the success of the first volume, Best S/M Erotica 2 will be more than just a selection of top-of-the-line erotic tales; it also will be a celebration of S/M diversity, reflecting the many different 'scenes' of S/M. Thus, authors are encouraged to submit stories exploring a wide range of power exchange: master/slave, structured versus impromptu, rough as well as romantic, implicit negotiation and unspoken agreement, and all the other colors and shades of S/M. Stories will be chosen on the basis of craft, depth, originality, as well as their relevance to the world of S/M sex.
While I respect the wide variety of S/M experiences, keep in mind that nonconsensual sex (i.e. rape) stories are not what this project is about.
If you have questions about whether or not your story may work for this anthology, please contact me with your concerns.
Both previously published as well as original works will be considered.
Stories: 1,000 to 5,000 words
Deadline for Submissions: October 1, 2003
Rights: First North American Anthology Rights
Payment: 1 cent per work for reprints/2 cents per word for original work
Email submissions should be sent to: zobop@aol.com (rtf format only, be sure to include contact information on all attachments)

Logical Lust
Website: Logical-Lust
Guidelines: Writer's Guidelines
Contact: Editor
Works of any kind (stories, flashers, poetry) are required for a new section in www.logical-lust.com entitled 'XtreXmeX'
Subject matter will have an erotic base to it but could be supernatural, extreme BDSM, dark or noir, be about death or violence, etc.
No submissions will be accepted where it is unclear that sexual consent exists, or that contain rape, bestiality, necrophilia, or that contain children or under age characters in sex scenes.
At the moment Logical-Lust is a non-paying website but does offer the opportunity to appear in a new, and fast growing erotica website that showcases a good standard of erotic writing. As a further incentive, I will consider offering a 'Guest Author' spot (where an author can showcase several of their works for a one month period) to any author who submits what I consider to be a very good entry.
This is, for the moment, an ongoing call for stories and poetry of any length.
Submissions by email only to captivatex@aol.com. Emails to be entitled "XtreXmeX submission" and the submission must be contained in the body of the email in plain Ariel or Times font. Any emails with attachments will be deleted promptly.
Guidelines
If you wish to submit anything to www.logical-lust.com, from a simple piece of humour to a full story, please do so by e-mail, to captivatex@aol.com inserting the text (plain text only) in the body of the e-mail (any e-mail received with attached files will be promptly deleted) and making the subject line of your e-mail; Logical Lust Submission. Remember to include a valid e-mail address and a short author biography. Please read the conditions set out below.
NB. If you are submitting anything that is currently published anywhere else, please check with that publisher before submitting. Thank you.
Current Calls for Submissions
Exit Stage Left
An occasion where, for whatever reason, a quick exit was required. Based on a true event it could be funny, serious, or even outrageous. Max 1000 words. Submit by 20th Oct 2003.
XtreXmeX
A new section ‘XtreXmeX’ will be introduced soon which will cover areas beyond merely erotic; supernatural, dark and noir, extremes of BDSM, death etc. Submissions must have an erotic basis. Ongoing submissions of stories or poetry accepted.
Humor
Know a good joke? Got a ‘problem’ you want to hear Dr Condom’s answer to? Feel free to send it in, anytime!
Responding to features/articles
If you feel you wish to add your own views to an article or feature in www.logical-lust.com, then by all means do so. I encourage feedback from my readership.
Submission conditions and restrictions
Payment
Unless specifically stated in a particular call for submission, www.logical-lust.com is a non-paying website at the present time. As an incentive to a call for submissions there may be an offer of a Contributing Author spot of one months duration to a ‘best submission’, in which an author may showcase several of their suitable works on www.logical-lust.com
Restrictions & Requirements
Submissions containing story lines or factual events involving the following will not be accepted, even in the XtreXmeX section.; Rape or any non-consensual acts, under age (18) persons or minors, incest, bestiality or necrophilia.
Submissions of a BDSM nature, and in particular to the XtreXmeX section, must have clear indication of consent early in the submission.
Romantic submissions should, by definition, have no sexual activity in them but the final decision as to which section any submission is placed lies with the editor (Captivatex).
All contributors MUST be at least 21 years old.
Articles & Features
Submissions to articles should be informative, factual and/or educational rather than have specific sexual activity content. They should not tell a story. Submissions to features may allow the storytelling of a factual event.
Humour & Jokes
Jokes are listed on www.logical-lust.com under the assumption that they have been freely and openly passed around. If, however, any piece of humour has any indication of being copyrighted it will either not be accepted, or withdrawn if already on show. The content of the ‘Dr. Condom’ section is for the purposes of humour only and is intended to cause no offence whatsoever, nor to infer solutions to actual situations.
Editing & Acceptance
The editor reserves the right to edit content and length of any submission prior to acceptance in this website. However it is not an intention to alter an individuals writing, since erotica is very much a personal thing. Editing would only be done if the editor felt it was in the author’s and the website’s best interests. The editor reserves the right not to accept any submission
---

--- Musings by C.B. Potts ---
============================================
Where No Man – Or Woman – Or Lovely Plastic Appliance -- Has Gone Before
One of the charms of writing in the adult genre is that there are selected themes an author can visit – and revisit – almost endlessly. Certain events are considered universally erotic, making them prime material for idea-hungry authors.
First and foremost among these are the “Virgin Stories”. Call it deflowering, popping the cherry, or any other variation, our readership seems to have an insatiable curiosity about how our characters enter the world of fleshly delights. No matter what orientation you prefer, there is a magazine – or at least a regularly printed anthology – devoted to first time experiences.
So what should you keep in mind when writing a “Virgin Story”?
Well, just as each of your characters is a distinct individual, each deflowering is unique. Consider these two characters:
Shaun couldn’t supress the nervous tremors running across her skin. Perhaps it was tension from the day’s events – the extravagant wedding, 450 guests gathered at her plantation home, Three Oaks, the imported Italian gown so tight Maman had to stitch her into it, the dancing until the musicians were near to fainting from exhaustion. Or perhaps it was something more. Perhaps it was that in a matter of minutes, Aaron would emerge from the bathroom, take one look at her draped in nothing more than a thought of silk, and at long last make her his wife.
Nineteen dollars. That’s all that was left after that rat Mickey had booted Darlene out of his car, keeping her purse. At least she’d managed to grab her knapsack, and she’d found these few precious bills folded in the bottom of the zipper pocket. Three days ago Darlene used to keep pencils there, the tiny notebook she’d scrawl assignments for freshman composition in. Now it was her bank account.
One thing was certain – she had to build up those savings in a hurry if she didn’t want to spend the night on cold Chicago streets. Darlene straightened up, smoothing her hand over narrow hips. There was a long line of slowly moving cars. A girl always had options.
Obviously, Shaun and Darlene are in for two very different evenings. This is where you come in. Use the tools of language to play out their experiences: the different settings, the actions of their respective partner, the emotions that each woman brings to the event. Details about the environment can add great depth to the eroticism of the story: Picture Darlene, jeans pushed down and back braced against a rough brick wall, as she earns the price of tonight’s hotel room. Picture Shaun, nestled in an eiderdown comforter, her entire world focused on the tender love shining in Aaron’s eyes.
Yet there are some elements of the Virgin Story that remain constant. No one comes to bed for the first time without some level of anxiety – even the most confident paramour might worry about having a pimple on their butt! There is anxiety about performance, consequences, and, quite bluntly, pain.
Of course, we’re writing porn here. This is the one time that performance can be assumed to be ideal. If our young man, caught up in the heady excitement of it all, cums within three minutes, in porn, his partner will not only be understanding, but also enthusiastic about helping him repeat that experience.
Depending of the length of the piece you’re planning to write, consequences in porn can be trivial, severe, or non-existent. It’s unlikely that a deflowering that occurs in a short, letters-type story will have any consequences at all. On the other hand, in a novella, losing one’s virginity can be a pivotal point in the action, influencing all the events to come.
Ninety percent of the pain of losing one’s virginity comes from the anticipation of the event – but we as writers should not ignore physical realities. If you’re pairing a one hundred pound nymphet with a man blessed with equipment usually only seen on equines, it’s going to be unpleasant – unless one’s partner is slow, patient, and gentle, concentrating on easing his partner toward bliss. Very few people enjoy being torn asunder.
Remember that one has several types of virginity to lose. There’s the traditional, “first time ever” virginity – but don’t forget one’s first anal, first oral, first same-sex, first group-sex, first time with toys, first time with bondage, first time outdoors, first time interracial, first time with space aliens. The list is endless, limited only by your imagination.
So go forth and enjoy writing your first time stories. Try out some different scenarios and experiment. As a wise working girl once told me,
“Being a virgin is no big deal—I’ve been one six times this week!”

You announced a call for submissions to Binary: Bisexual Erotica. I sent in two stories, and they liked one! They accepted my story "Sex with his Ex" for their anthology "Swing." Sage Vivant wants to also reprint it in Binary, but the other editor hasn't read it yet.
Thank you! I"ve written for newspapers and magazines, but this is my first erotica published!

--- Q & A ---
===========================================
When and how should you give up on a story that has been meandering in lala land for over a year? Or should you give up on it at all? Can you feel safe sending another story in to that publisher? I know you talk about finding contracts for long lost manuscripts in your book, but I want to avoid "black hole x" while sending my stuff out to as many magazines as I can. Am I having my cake while eating it too, or what?
It's an unfortunate but true fact that stories do, indeed, end up in lala land, never to be heard from again. And even though we really should be able to have our cake (sales!) and eat it, too (communication!), such is not always the case.
As to when to give up on a story? Never! As you grow as a writer and as markets change, there's always a chance that your story can be placed. Keep tabs on those that languish, dusting them off every so often and checking the current markets to see if a home can be found for them.
In the case of a non-responding market, however, I usually give an editor 3-6 weeks (if I've submitted via email) and about 2 months (if I've submitted via snail mail.) Then I'll resend the story, often with its original cover letter (no need to harp on the editor about the previous submission.) If I haven't heard back in another month or two I give up on that market, at least for awhile, and send my work elsewhere.
I would not send another story to that market right away, although I might try again in 6 months or so just to test the waters. Then if I still didn't hear from them, I'd cross them off my list for good, or at least until there'd been an editorial change (a common enough occurence in this biz.)

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================
Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!
I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.
I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.
You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
