From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================================

Yes, yes, it's true, I am two days late. And here I was hoping no one would notice....

Had a bunch o' deadlines to attend to but they're finally taken care of, so now I can attend to, well, everything else. Including the basics like laundry, child care and housecleaning, along with business matters, email, the newsletter and Sex-Writer.com. Whew!

Now that the kids are on summer break, I'm relearning the fine art of juggling 6 assignments and working in the my corner-of-the-living-room "office" while 2 or 3 pre-adolescents boys play video games, another 2 or 3 adolescents girls traipse through the house complaining that they're hungry, my husband wanders through on his way to do this or that chore and stops to ask if I can play ping-pong, and oh, did I mention the grown brother who's now living with us?

It's been a challenge, to say the least. I can do a lot of writing-related things while chaos swirls around me, but when it's time to write for real, I need a relative degree of solitude. When that time comes, I've discovered that it helps to put headphones on. Blessedly silent headphones. Not only does it muffle the outside noise but it's also a signal to everybody else that they are NOT TO TALK TO ME! Unless, as I so tactfully like to point out, YOU ARE BLEEDING OR DYING! Seems to be working :)

Speaking of ping pong, we've got a table on our back porch now and my husband and I like to play what I refer to as 'full-contact pong.' Not that we're actually tackling each other or throwing paddles, but we're both really competitive about ping pong (and don't even get me started on foosball!) so it's a helluva workout. So far, my husband, who had a table growing up, is winning, but I'm learning fast and hope to be able to whup him good in the very near future...

Now, on to business...

We've got an extra-long issue for you today. A column from C.B. Potts on what editors want from writers and a very amusing article from Tara Alton on the art of the (sexy) phone call. Plus we've got several great listings and a question from a reader on the pros and cons of pseudonyms. We've also got some updated info on the "Watching the Wife" site and a whole slew of you wrote in with more thoughtful comments on the "Writing For Free" debate. And let's not forget all the excellent "Goings On." Oh, and one of our readers is also offering a Wisconsin Writers Retreat, you can check that out after Q and A...

And to all you new Sex-Writer.com subscribers...Welcome! We got off to a fine start two weeks ago and now that I've got some of my other work out of the way, I'm going to be updating the site. So check back often in the coming week. I'll get the "Poetry" and "NonFiction" categories in plus I'll put up a "New" page so that you can see what's new without having to go through the entire site. In addition I've got a dozen or so new listings to put in along with another dozen or so Q and A's. Also I'm thinking about doing a blog, let me know if you're interested in something like that and, if so, what you'd like to see in it. I've also had some requests for a publisher breakdown, meaning a listing of publishers and the mags/books/etc. that they publish. And many people have asked for a "warnings" page. Not sure I want to go there, I'm not interested in being a watchdog, but I'm thinking about it. Let me know if you have any thoughts on the subject. Oh, and please send me your feedback about the site in general!

Okay, enough from me..

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- Ten Tips for a Dirty Phone Call: It’s Not What You Think ---
--- by Tara Alton ---
==========================================

The phone rings. You’re in the middle of making homemade macaroni cheese for dinner, yelling at your cat to stop whining for Velveeta and trying to fend off your husband’s amorous advances. At first, you think the man on the other end of the phone is a pervert, saying something about big jugs, but you realize he’s an editor who you submitted an erotic story to. You’re totally caught off guard. The last professional phone call you conducted was with the pizza delivery boy.

Here are ten tips to whip your phone style in shape.

1) Cut the distractions. Give your cat and your husband a piece of cheese, turn off any noise makers such as the radio or the television. Remember whatever you hear, the other person on the end of the phone can hear as well.

2) Show your ability to listen. Allow him to say what is on his mind. Never interrupt. Be mindful of your manners.

3) Demonstrate a desire to be responsive. Enthusiasm is important. You don’t have to fake an orgasm over the phone, but this editor is taking time out to speak to you. Respond accordingly.

4) Don’t be intimated. This is a still person you’re speaking to. He may have the magic wand to allow your character Penelope to open her legs in Paris in the pages of his magazine, but he is still not god.

5) If you can’t relax, use a visual trick. Don’t imagine him in the middle of an orgy, or you might end up aroused yourself and sounding more like a sex phone operator than a professional writer. Instead use the old trick like imagining him in his underwear or pretending he is a little kid in a grown up body. Just don’t ask him if he prefers tighty whities or call him kiddo.

6) Don’t take it personally if there are comments or criticisms. Just like an acceptance or rejection letter, the feedback is directed at the work, not at you. Over the phone it might seem like it is more in your face. Just take a deep breath. Usually a phone call isn’t bad news.

7) Try to speak like an adult. Remember you’re a writer. You should have a good grasp of grammar. Cut out the "umms" and "you knows" etc . . . Brush up on your diction if you have to. How you speak is representing you just as much as your writing.

8) Too caught off guard to make a decision? Ask him politely if you can call him back. Get his phone number and extension if he has one. Write it down.

9) Recap what he said to you. It will show that you were listening and you’ve got your facts straight, especially if you’re asked for a rewrite. What if he asked for gooseflesh in sex scene two, and you stick in a live goose?

10) End every phone call with a friendly and sincere "Thank you." After your call, you hang up the phone. Your macaroni and cheese may not be up to its usual brilliance, your cat may think that all this meowing for cheese actually worked, and your husband may now be tugging down your pants for a quickie in the kitchen because you were saying words like ‘tits’ and ‘ass’ on the phone, but you’ve conducted a professional call with flair.

Binary: The Best of Both Worlds - Bisexual Erotica

Contact: M. Christian or Sage Vivant

Deadline: August 15, 2003
Binary: The Best of Both Worlds - Bisexual Erotica
Edited by M. Christian & Sage Vivant
To be published by Haworth Press

M. Christian and Sage Vivant are currently seeking fictional and non-fictional erotic short works for the anthology project Binary: The Best of Both Worlds - Bisexual Erotica. Contributions may be fiction, non-fiction, humorous, serious, genre, but must always be bisexually oriented, erotic and respectful of orientation and preference.

Contributors to Binary are asked to explore the potential of what it means to be bisexual through insightful personal essays as well as short fiction. Though stories must be erotic, they should also feature a wide range of emotions around sex and sexuality, including important (but painful) emotional journeys and moments of self-discovery.

Feel free to present your story creatively. For instance, you don't have to show your characters having sex with both genders to prove they are bisexual. You may be able to accomplish what you need to say through implication and subtlety. However, if you feel that showing a high level of sexual activity is relevant to the story you want to tell, by all means do so. This anthology requires no specific amount or kind of sexual activity.

True stories are welcome but not necessary. If your story reads well, is engaging and respects the bisexual lifestyle and those who live it, it will receive serious consideration.

All aspects of bisexuality are welcome, including first time experiences, life discoveries, favorite times, difficult (but meaningful) times, and reflections on bisexual life and sexuality. Authors are encouraged to tell their stories with erotic flare, wit and style, from true experiences to outrageous fantasies - demonstrating and celebrating bisexual life and sexuality.

Stories: 1,500 to 7,000 words
Deadline for Submissions: August 15, 2003
Payment: $50 for original work, $25 for reprints
Rights: First North American Anthology Rights

Submissions should be sent to:

M. Christian
41 Sutter Street, #1012
San Francisco, CA 94104

Email submissions will not be accepted for this project, though digital copies of accepted stories will be required.

Questions? Contact M. Christian (zobop@aol.com) or Sage Vivant (sagevivant@yahoo.com)

--- What I Didn’t Know - Musings By C.B. Potts ---
--- The Power to Say Yes ---
============================================

There’s a tiny bit of wisdom that shows up in every salesmanship manual. It goes something like this:

When approaching any organization, don’t bother wasting your time with the people who can say no. You want to talk to the one person who can say Yes – and then do everything in your power to ensure that they do.

So who has the power to say Yes to us – to the writers who flood slush piles and email boxes with pile upon pile of our carefully crafted words? Why, the editors! And for this issue, two were kind enough to share with me what will make them likely to say Yes – and what will definitely make them say No.

One of the first things mentioned by both Michelle Zipp, of Playgirl Magazine, and Diana Sheridan, of Options, was the importance of writer’s guidelines. Word counts are important, imposed because editors only have a limited amount of space to fill.

Playgirl, for example, only accepts 4 fantasy pieces per issue. Diana Sheridan has more to add, explaining “An issue of a given magazine is so-and-so many pages long. ...It can’t be changed, isn’t going to be changed, and no, we can’t print “two more pages” – printing doesn’t work like that!” Increases in magazine size causes the publishers to incur greater printing costs, not to mention other affiliated expenses.

Study the magazine you’re submitting to. While it’s important to be unique, if a topic hasn’t been covered in a magazine previously, there may be a reason. It may not be considered empowered, enlightened, or entertaining, which will put it out of the running for Playgirl. It may violate a number of rules put in place due to Option’s distribution mechanism – or as Sheridan points out, a kink might be so esoteric that it would not interest the majority of the readership.

There is a solution, according to Sheridan – get on the computer, e-mail the editor, and ask. It’s far easier to hear that an idea simply isn’t going to fly before you’ve spent hours writing it down.

It’s also frustrating for editors to receive stories that clearly show the author has no clue what the magazine is about. You wouldn’t want to send a male-on-male bestiality extravaganza to Playgirl, nor a sweet tale of deflowering the next door neighbor virgin girl (unless you were a girl yourself!) to Options. Yet both editors receive inappropriate manuscripts fairly often.

Handwritten manuscripts are a definite no-no. If you are still producing hard copy manuscripts, a necessity for markets like Playgirl, then type them. Double space. Leave appropriate margins. Don’t use fancy fonts. Use white paper. All of this has been spouted out ad infinitum in countless writer’s publications, but apparently bears repeating.

If a manuscript is submitted single-spaced with virtually no margins, Diana Sheridan wonders, “How am I supposed to edit? Or do these people assume their works are such gems that they won’t need any editing?”

And while confidence may be sexy, over-confidence is definitely not. Don’t use your cover letter to tell the editor what a great story you’ve written – chances are it is not going to supplant every other work in the literary pantheon. That’s the reason editors have a job – because someone objective needs to determine what is a good story, and what is not.

The cover letter should, however, include some vital information. “Absolutely, be sure you include contact information on your story, preferably phone number, but e-mail is also acceptable.” Michelle Zipp, of Playgirl. “I’m not going to ever buy a story without talking to the author first.”

The last factor is the most important. Your submissions must be your own unique creation. Plagarism is unacceptable, including self-plagarism. How do you self-plagarize? By taking a story you’ve written earlier, tweaking a few minor details, changing character names, and sending it back out for sale.

“It’s cheating. It’s stealing.” Diana Sheridan, Options. “If I ever catch you, your name is mud, and you’ll never sell to me again. I have caught any number of plagarists, including a couple of guys who were stealing from themselves. ... It’s dishonest. It’s reprehensible. And it’s stupid, ‘cause you’ll damage your reputation with that editor ... and all the other editors she talks to.”

So there you go – a few words from the people with the power to say Yes. Use them wisely, as they may be the key to selling your next story.

Special Thanks to Diana Sheridan and Michelle Zipp for this column.

--- Write For Free? More Readers' Comments ---
============================================

Katy,

I too feel compelled to comment on Alex May's article. While he makes many excellent points, and it is undeniable that many writers are underpaid for their work, few writers can expect to leap into their craft and make money from their first sentence.

Although there are free sites that take all comers, regardless of how good or bad the submissions are, many of the free sites are extremely selective in the stories they publish. www.cleansheets.com, for example, states it receives hundreds of submissions a month yet only publishes a handful. There are many others too, with similarly high standards. In addition, many anthology editors troll these sites to select stories for paid inclusion in print anthologies. Other anthologies will only consider previously printed stories, and count the free websites as a previous printing. My first erotic story was submitted to Clean Sheets and was subsequently selected for "Best Women's Erotica" without me actively submitting it. Indeed, I wouldn't have dared to submit it to an anthology, I simply didn't have the confidence in myself as an erotic writer at the time. Since then, I've been paid for several stories that first appeared on the free sites, and I dare to believe that possibly I *can* (sometimes!) write reasonable erotica.

Obviously, in an ideal world, all these sites would all pay. And I'm sure there are some unscrupulous sites that rake in the $$ yet pay their authors the big zero. However, although I now make some money from my craft, I will continue to submit stories to free sites. I've found that it pays off --- not only in eventual $$, but as a way of building my name, boosting my confidence, and improving my writing skills. In addition, I've had some excellent and helpful critique from editors and often you are consulted on the editing process, which doesn't always happen in paid markets.

But thanks to the start I got from some of the free sites, I now make money from something immensely pleasurable. Now, if only I could find someone to pay me for eating chocolate!

The rise of the Internet has divided the erotica camps into three distinct factions:

The first group came of age in the pre-Internet era, when success was measured by one's ability to attract the interest of outside parties like publishers and agents. The goal was to get a publisher to pay for the privilege of distributing an author's original works through physical products (in this case, ink-coated paper).

The second group has emerged in conjunction with the Internet, which provides a world-class text distribution system to anyone with enough brains to make their works available online. For many of these authors, audience recognition is more important than getting paid.

The third group, of which I am a member, is using the Internet as a marketing medium to generate byline recognition in the hopes that readers will like the free content that authors share with them, want to read more, and buy their print (and ebook) titles accordingly.

The most lucid explanation for this approach can be found at: http://www.baen.com/library/

Also, science-fiction author Cory Doctorow has made his first novel, "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom," available as a totally free download, and not only is the print version currently ranked #3,265 on Amazon, none other than Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has officially endorsed it on his summer reading list. - www.craphound.com/down

Nobody's approach is etched-in-marble "right," although the first group does seem to be a bit stressed out these days (they have a lot of company in the corridors of the major record labels and Hollywood studios).

I think it's a mistake to equate writers, or anyone working in the arts, with accountants. The arts simply don't have the kind of respect in our culture that other types of work do. There are some types of arts, such as writing poetry and choral singing, where not only are you never going to make any money, generally you will have to pay money for the privilege of participating. So if you are going to devote all or part of your life to an art, you need to prepare yourself for being paid badly or not at all for what you do.

That said, there is still a fairly healthy paying market for erotica. So if you're not able to sell your piece, it's probably because it's not good enough yet, not because no one knows who you are. (I've sold several stories to editors who didn't know me from Adam, but thought the stories were terrific.) It's never been clear to me why people would post unsalable work on the Internet to get their names known. It seems to me that the only thing that's going to get known is that your work is not yet good enough to sell.

There is, however, another aspect of making your not-quite-ready-for primetime work available for others to see and that's so you can get feedback about what's working and what's not. Unlike accountants, who must pay for their apprenticeships by taking college courses and getting a degree, writers have many avenues to learning their craft, one of them being placing their work somewhere for free and getting feedback from readers. How to do that without getting your name known as someone who's not very good has always struck me as one of the problems with the Internet. Once it's out there, anyone who cares to look can find your work -- be it good, bad or indifferent.

I was very fortunate to start writing when there was still a thriving zine scene and to get involved with a zine community that was very good about commenting on people's stories. I was even luckier, when I outgrew the advice the zinesters could give me, to find a very fine writing group that really helped me hone my craft. I think there are ways of doing the same thing on the Internet in usenet forums and web-assisted critique groups though I haven't explored them for myself.

So, should you publish your erotica for free? If you can't sell it and you have some place to publish it where you'll get useful feedback, sure. But you also want to make sure that when your name gets known it's attached to work that's going to make people want to come back for more.

--- More Info On "Watching The Wife" ---
============================================

See the original Watching The Wife info Here.

Dear Author,

If you are one that counts all your hits on all your stories each month, you will see a difference in your monthly check.

Over the past several months we have been experiencing a stable or declining membership. The nation's, no the world's, poor economic condition has been effecting our site. We constantly get new members but it is incredible how many people have poor credit, rather no credit. The number of people whose credit card will not accept a $9.99 charge is simply unbelievable and so they have to be dropped from our membership roll. Therefore our income goes down while our expenses go up every month.

Therefore, to keep the site viable, we have suspended paying for hits to stories that have been posted for over 2 years. If and when, if ever, conditions change, we will return to paying for all hits.

We are very sorry about this and hope you will understand.

Any comments are welcomed.

Lucky

Your article a few newsletter ago about writing readers' letters inspired me to try my hand at it. Last month I spent a couple of hours on a long haul flight to the UK writing four such letters. Today, I heard that Playgirl will be printing one of them! I consider that small success directly attributable to your newsletter! Thank you, and I'm off to figure out how to send you the $5 voluntary subscription!

--- Wisconsin Author Offers Creative Writing Retreat ---
===========================================

Have an idea that would make a great short story? Ever wonder writers get their ideas? Want to see your short story published? Maybe you just need a little creative "go juice"....

Christine Calnin, author of award winning fiction invites writers to join her and professional editor, Rhetta England in a "Creative Blitz - Fiction Writer's Retreat and Workshop".

This working retreat will be held September 12 through September 15, 2003 at the beautiful BisonRidge Ranch in Packwaukee, Wisconsin.

"Simply put," Calnin says. "A CREATIVE BLITZ is the fine art of brainstorming with other interesting and creative people in a relatively short amount of time. Whether you are a beginning writer or a seasoned professional," she adds. "This working retreat has something to offer everyone!"

The workshop has two goals. The first is to learn how to be creative and come up with ideas that will create mind blowing short fiction that SELLS and the second is learning how to dream UP those killer ideas.

This four day weekend will take the writer from idea to a completed, critiqued and professionally edited short story of 1500 to 3000 words that is ready to submit for publication.

Through a variety of activities, writers will learn how to come up with great ideas and share our own methods of madness with other fellow writers.

Other activities include: "Short Shorts with Story Starters" - Work with the course material and learn how to create your own story starters, a "Round Robin Shorty" - choose your genre and contribute in that genre, "How to write Flash Fiction" - can you write a great story in 100 words or less? Creative consultation and critique, a Professional Editor to assist you with polishing your short story, and Markets - what are they and how do you find them?

Included in the course fee are writing materials, a workbook and and workbook on disk to take home, wonderful meals, fun activities and sleeping accomodations.

The CREATIVE BLITZ will be held at beautiful BisonRidge Ranch in Packwaukee, Wisconsin - visit them at www.bisonridgeranch.com. This breathtaking property is over 1,000 acres strong and is home to over 300 head of Bison. The land boasts ponds, pastures, forests and sacred Indian land. It is here that your spirit will be nourished, your soul captivated and your mind buzzing with creativity! The house at BisonRidge, built over 100 years ago is newly remodeled, yet still, a delightfully authentic Victorian home.

What about fun? Be a kid again at the campfire at the 'the burned out barn' - complete with S'mores, ghost stories and Tarot readings, hikes to Sacred areas of property - Indian and Effigy mounds, ponds and forest glades, and more!

Wagon ride and tour of breathtaking BisonRidge Ranch - feed and visit the Bison - inspirational and educational. "If you've never seen a buffalo in person," says Christine. "You're in for a real treat - so don't forget to bring your camera!"

Renew and re-energize with "energy healing" with a Reiki Master, enjoy a mystical Tea Leaf Reading and relaxing Massage Therapy! Hot tub and Sauna available to all at no charge and there might even be a surprise Wine Tasting with a local Winery.

"We also have a Tipi available for personal reflection, inspiration and meditation," says an enthusiastic Calnin. "Would you like to camp out in the tipi? Bring your sleeping bag!"

From children's literature to mystery, to erotica, Christine has entertained in print and online. She is author of the "Behind the Apron Series" - sexy psych thrillers - the first book of which, "Addicted to Sex", is due out on the shelves Summer 2003 and two more by Summer 2004. She has written award winning short fiction and is a regular contributor for an adult publication in the UK. Christine's short fiction has been published in "The Scout", "Hopscotch for Girls", "Closet Desires IV - Flights of Fantasy" and "Touch", to name a few. She has also written numerous articles on writing and the writing life.

She lives in south central Wisconsin with her husband, three teens, two cats and assortment of Holstein cows and other furry friends. Chris and her husband are also dairy farmers whose family homestead farm was established in 1852.

"We know it will be educational and the end result will be a short story that is ready for the writer to submit for publication. But," Calnin adds. "We're going to have a great time doing it!"

--- Looking For Writers ---

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
