It's here, it's here! After a whole year of late nights spent squinting at the computer, pulling out my hair and typing until my fingers were numb... Sex-Writer.com is live! (Can't you just see me jumping up and down in cyberspace, squealing "Yippee!"?

There is still a ton o' work to be done; I need to go through every single category and market listing (a hundred of them and counting as of today) with a fine toothed comb, plus I have more listings and Q and A's to add, along with a FAQ page. And I'm sure there are some bugs left to be worked out. But as of about 5 minutes ago, you can actually order a six-month subscription for $10.95!

I'm really hoping this can become a top-notch resource for sex-writers, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know. I plan to update the site at least weekly and there will be lots of changes and additions over the next month as I fine-tune everything. I'm going to work out some kind of incentive for those who send me new markets to list and I plan on adding lots more resources to the site. But until then, please check out the site and, whether you choose to order or not, let me know what you think!

In addition, since so many of you are having rather strong reactions to the "Should Writers Write For Free" debate, I've got one reader's comments in "Write For Free?" which is located after Kevin's column. --- Use Sex Archetypes To Spice Up Your Fiction ---

Even before you begin a story, you should have some idea of who your characters are, how they act and *why* they act. The best erotica features characters that readers recognize, despite daring plot devices or original writing.

These characters should whisper to the most hidden parts of all of us, whether we choose to acknowledge these secret voices or not.

The following details major sexual archetypes that can be used by sex writers to breathe life into their characters. Both categories contain four sub-types that can help enhance character exploration.

#

Type I: Bad Girls
Everybody knows these women: They have sex for sex's sake, their enjoyment dictated by their own whims and desires, society and their lovers be damned! Even today, these women are considered dangerous to many; the freedom with which they carry their desires may actually threaten our morality! Or maybe these gals are just hot...

Four Major Bad Girls:
Tarts
The sound of this word leaves a bad taste in your mouth, doesn't it? According to Merriam-Webster, this word can be used as an adjective or a noun. As an adjective, it means that something is biting or caustic. One can only guess why this word came to be used as a description for women.

The tart is her own woman, so much so that many use sex as a means to fortune (the prostitute) or power (the courtesan). But her independence can ruin a weak man if he lets it, especially if he falls in love. The tart's main love affair is usually with herself, and anyone who attempts to stand in her way will most often slink away with hurt feelings and a wounded ego.

Virgins
How is a virgin a bad girl? The virgin has the power of choice. Whomever she chooses to deflower her can be enslaved by her charms, empowered by her faith or entrapped by her innocence.

In Anne Rice's "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty", the Prince who captured Beauty was so besotted with his charge that he could barely "train" her. Though she lost her innocence to him, at a certain point, these characters switched roles: Beauty had enslaved the Prince in ways he could not fathom or reproduce.

When writing about virgins, keep in mind that these women are not necessarily powerless, or even pure in their motivations. They wield just as much control over their environments as the men who deflower them. Make sure they use their power!

Wives
A married woman needn't ever be a boring one. A woman in love with her husband will find many satisfying ways to please her mate, even after the birth of children. Wives can be sexier than the mistresses most commonly written about in erotic stories if the writer takes the time to give her sexy qualities from the start.

Where most writers might have a wife's pull over her husband diminish over time, why not write a story in which the wife becomes more arousing as the years go by? Write about wives with active gym memberships, healthy self-esteem and sex drives that go to the limit! Familiarity doesn't have to breed contempt. In fact, it can breed the best sex scenes ever.

Vixens
The vixen is high-spirited and usually not even-tempered. She knows what she wants and is not afraid to ask for it--or take it. But the vixen isn't a shrew; she doesn't emasculate, denigrate or make her lover feel like less of a person. So while she is demanding, her demands are usually for things that make the relationship work better. The vixen wants more time, more sex, more heat.

Perhaps the vixens you like to write about are dominant entities: goddesses with whips, chains, and leather. But this doesn't have to make her mean, or bossy or rude; none of these things are sexy, after all. The vixen may give orders, but she does so out of love and desire. And if she's truly a lady, she'll be responsible and respectful, even during the cruelest punishments.

Type II: Nasty Boys
Some rule, while others are brought to their knees. The men of erotic literature take many shapes and forms; and not all of them are heroic. But men can be written in ways that women often cannot: a man's arousal is much more visually stimulating. Where a woman's desire may be evident in smaller ways, a man's excitement can literally leap off the page at the reader.

Four Major Nasty Boys:
Masters
Masters reign supreme over everything under their domain. That usually includes any men or women they come into contact with. These men are highly skilled in sex, love and intimacy and will use their mastery over these highly prized attributes to hold on to what they want. These men can be written as saints or tyrants; but their main function is to ooze irresistibility. These are the men whose passions we cannot live without.

Cuckolds
Cuckolds are pushovers, right? Any man who can't keep his woman in hand or who might even accept a woman's infidelity can't be a real man. Or can he? The cuckold doesn't have to be written as a weakling; perhaps he just likes to watch. Many men become aroused by watching their lovers surrender to the attentions of another.

Rakes
Writing the rake (a promiscuous man) can be some of the most freeing prose a sex writer can put on the page. Rakes are sexually indiscriminate, bedding every beauty that their charm brings into their paths. A story with a rake as the hero has numerous possibilities; he dallies with many, but his affections never really belong to anyone.

Because the rake is superficially charming, very rarely is he ever cruel; he does not have to be. He has the ability to disengage himself from a relationship as quickly as he jumped into it. When written well, the rake's libido should drive him into all sorts of sexual satisfying situations. This type makes no apologies. He has no regrets.

Princes
Like masters, princes are men of power who rule over other people. However, where the master's focus is control and domination, the prince's roles are that of leader and teacher. Whether he is royalty or not, this man's sexual identity is best suited for teaching pleasure; his students will warmly reciprocate. Even in his most torrid sexual liaisons, he proves himself gallant, sophisticated, and above all else, a sensual guide. Unlike rakes, a prince does not seduce merely for seduction's sake. The prince conquers and beds in the spirit of true affection.

Writing an original story should be the author's primary concern, but that doesn't mean ignoring the erotic archetypes readers recognize. Put familiar characters into new situations--your work should flow more smoothly and your readers will instantly root for the hero.

SEX WORKERS AND FORMER SEX WORKERS -- CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Greta Christina and Greenery Press are seeking submissions for an upcoming anthology. The book, tentatively titled "Paying For It," will essentially be an etiquette guide for sex work customers, written by sex workers and former sex workers. I'm seeking submissions from men, women and transfolk, from all kinds of sex work that involve customer interaction: prostitution, professional domination and submission, phone sex, interactive video sex, stripping and dancing, talking to a live nude girl/boy, etc. (I'm also seeking submissions from sex work support staff -- front desk staff, order takers for phone sex lines, etc.) This is your opportunity to tell your customers whatever you've wanted to tell them but felt you couldn't if you wanted to keep their business. Your submission should describe how you do and don't (or did and didn't, if you're not doing sex work now) like to be treated by customers: what behavior from customers has made you like them, and what behavior from customers has made you dislike them. You can describe general principles (such as "Respect my limits") as well as specific examples (such as "Don't keep trying to touch me when I've told you that you can't").

In addition, if you've ever given customers extra service, special treatment, or just a more friendly and enthusiastic time because you liked them and appreciated how they treated you -- or if you've ever given them the bare minimum, short shrift, or refused them service altogether because they annoyed you or offended you (even inadvertently) -- please say so and give specific examples. If you've done more than one kind of sex work, you can either focus on just one or talk about them all -- if you do the latter, I'd love to hear any overall principles or guidelines you might have to offer about what makes for a good sex work customer in any area of sex work.

My hope for the book is that it will help close what I see as a major communication gap between sex workers and customers and make sex work better and more pleasant for both, helping sex workers get better treatment from customers and helping customers get better service as a result of treating sex workers better. Call for Submissions: Anthology of fiction by new writers over 42

/Other/ magazine publisher Charlie Anders seeks fresh fiction for a new anthology. Send your most compelling stories, your most memorable characters. Stories that stay with the reader long after he/she's finished reading them. Locations that feel like places the author has lived. Your submissions should have the edge of a writer who's still willing to take foolish risks, but the polish that comes from working at the craft of writing for years. Most of all, your fiction should be dead-on original.

All genres are welcome, as are genre-busting pieces. Transgressive, off-kilter stories are more than welcome, but I'm not looking for shock value for its own sake. I'm actively seeking perspectives outside of the mainstream of American culture, but hope to avoid identity politics.

There's only one requirement for contributors. To be included in this anthology, you must be over 42. And if you're previously published, you cannot have published your fiction for money before your 42nd birthday. Exciting writers burst onto the scene at all ages, and this anthology aims to showcase writers whose careers started in their forties and beyond. If the anthology is as good as it should be, the focus will be on the strength of the writing, not the age of the authors. Busting stereotypes will be just an added bonus.

I'm still getting a publisher for this volume. One publisher has asked to see sample stories and a partial table of contents. I'm expecting to be able to pay contributors $30 to $50 each upon publication, but I'll have more details once I have a publishing deal set up.

Erotica author Chelsea Shepard is looking for a graphic artist to help conceive and create a series of book covers for her upcoming trilogy, "Two Moons." The elevator pitch for the work is "BDSM-kinky science-fiction romance targeted to a female audience." While open to creative recommendations, Shepard's preference is for art that prominently features the main (female) character with allusions to the sci-fi and bondage themes.

Examples include Jacqueline Carey's "Kushiel" series ( http://www.jacquelinecarey.com/) and Anne Bishop's "Black Jewels" universe (http://www.annebishop.com/). If she was going to use a photograph, the style of Craig Morey ( http://www.moreystudio.com) would be her first choice. What Shepard does not want is explicit (as in gaudily pornographic) imagery, Fabio's pecs or Lara Croft's pixillated poses.

The cover art may be used for both the paperback and electronic versions of the books, so the image must reproduce well in small digital form factors (think Amazon's listing).

Please note that Shepard is securing the artwork for "Two Moons" independently of her publishers, so payment is negotiable, and will likely involve a combination of money, secondary rights and promotional consideration through the web site of Chelsea Shepard ( http://www.chelseashepard.com), her parter, Adrian Hunter ( http://www.exsx.org).

“Don’t you like me?” she pouted.
“Of course I like you, Sarita.”
“Then let me come home with you. Shrikant is working late again.”
"Sarita, you’re married, we both work for your father, and I see you every day. That’s asking for trouble.”
“You misunderstand my meaning. You have two choices: you can either satisfy my longing at your apartment, or face my father after I run into his office with my sweater torn, saying you tried to assault me on the stairs."

Talk about a heck of a choice. Be willing or get accused of rape. With a choice like that Dickie does not have to do much thinking and soon breaks the rule that very man knows about. Never mess around too close to home, as it will get you in the end.

But that is Dickie’s problem in the first story - titled “Cottontails” - of this enjoyable novella. Like most novellas, there is a lack of depth or overall plot to the book. In the novella format it is hard to build depth to characters or complicated plots and instead, the focus is usually on the action. That is true here where the focus is mostly on graphic sexual scenes. However, depite the limitations, this novella works exceedingly well, especially in the first story.

Blackmailed into sex by the beautiful Sarita of French/Indian descent, Dickie really does not have a choice. He enjoys himself fully, oblivious to the fact that a neighbor using her telescope from an adjoining condo can see everything clearly. She soon comes over and introduces herself as Mary. Mary is bisexual and beautiful in her own right and she wants Sarita. To do it, she is willing to get intimate with Dickie first as long as he agrees to introduce them. Another hard choice. He does and soon he finds out how much pleasure Mary can bring a man.

Not only has it been a very good time, but Mary’s interest also could solve Dickie’s problem. He does not want anything to do with Sarita as her father runs the company that both he and Sarita work for. He figures that if he can introduce Sarita to Mary and they hit it off sexually, he can gracefully step back out of the way and allow the two of them to go on their merry way. But the best-laid plans often go astray and it is soon clear that while they have hit it off, there are other complications that have to be considered.

Adding others to the sexual mix is also a theme of the second and shorter story of this novella. Titled “The Beauty of Desire” a husband still feels sexual desire toward his wife Allison even though they have been married seven years. As the story opens, he is eagerly savoring the fact that she has to pay off on a bet he won from her. But instead of doing it at home, Allison does the act with him while sitting in the swirling waters of a Jacuzzi at a local health club. This soon leads to other sexual adventures including the addition of a beautiful woman that they both have desire for and are able to act upon.

Both stories are equally enjoyable in this 101-page novella. As noted above, because of the length limitations of the novella format, there is a definite lack of depth to the work. The first story has a significant more complicated plot than the second story, but both are very weak compared to a traditional novel. Both stories are much more like elongated short stories and on that level, work very well. The primary focus in both is long, graphic sexual scenes as well as the addition of new partners. These stories are a quick read with plenty of action and, all things considered, make this novella pretty good stuff.

I just read the article by Alex May. I'm a literary erotica writer and many of the well known literary erotica writers - Thomas Roche, M. Christian, Helena Settimana, Jamie Joy Gatto, Cara Bruce - have posted their work for free. They make money with their erotica now, but they had to get their name out there.

I've posted my work for free to get experience writing erotica and to get my name out there. I've begun to submit to anthologies and next year I'll begin writing erotica novels. My free postings have prepared me for that.

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
