Thanks for your patience concerning the delay of the newsletter and your well-wishes concerning my illness! No need to go into the gory details, but suffice it to say that the current battle culminated in an allergic reaction to antibiotics. Whew, I didn't know hives could last that long! Thank God for Benadryl, but I think I'm *still* stoned on the stuff ;)

Needless to say I'm woefully behind on freelance work, researching markets for the newsletter and Sex-Writer.com but hey, we won't go into that either...

Let's just get on with the newsletter, shall we, and I'll work to catch up while you peruse this issue ;) We've got a good review by Kevin Tipple, an article on "Believable Porn" by Barry Johnston and some good markets, so hopefully you'll have plenty to keep you busy.

Unfortunately, on a related note, I seem to also have lost the Goings On that I had collected for this issue, so if you sent me something, please resend and I'll get it out next issue.

Also, please see my plea (after Barry's article) for some programming help if you have any skill at installing Message Boards.

As usual, I hope you enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- How Believable Should Porn Be? ---
--- Barry Johnston ---
=========================================

“We don’t believe a word of this,” the editor wrote across the front page of my second manuscript. I'd just started writing for money and wasn’t really good at handling rejection. However, in this particular instance I found the editor’s comment more humorous than anything else. The story was about two couples who, initially out of economic necessity, share a hotel room and things quickly get out of hand. I actually thought it was pretty tame stuff for a magazine whose stories regularly feature sexual acts that are still illegal in certain parts of the south. I did eventually sell the story to another editor who loved it.

As silly as I thought they were, the comments did make me think about the nature of this business. Maybe it is because I write porn myself or maybe it’s simply that I am older. But the story of the blond blue-eyed girl with the 38D breasts who just turned eighteen and enjoys lesbian sex with close relatives just doesn’t stir my desires the way it used to.

Like other porn writers, I’ve created my share of orgy scenes, strangers falling into bed together and other unlikely scenarios. My experience is that they’re fun to write and they sell well. But I also find that my writing is more interesting and fulfilling if I strive to tell a story and if I make my characters believable. I always felt that letting the sexual tension build a little before we all end up in the bedroom created a more interesting story. But not every magazine editor agrees. In rejecting my work, editors told me that they wanted to see hard-core sex by the third or fourth paragraph. My favorite stories involve outdoor sex and it usually takes me four paragraphs just to describe the spectacular scenery! Fortunately I have found a small regional magazine that buys well over half of what I submit. The editor I work with shares my belief that setting up the action is important.

Creating believable characters is difficult, but not impossible. In describing the physical assets of my female characters, I strive to portray beauty without necessarily creating cookie cutter centerfolds. At least once a year, I visit a nude beach. Although I try not to gawk, I do people-watch. Nude beaches are great places to study the human form as it really is without the benefit of an airbrush. Many characters in my stories owe their appearance to a beachgoer I found especially interesting. Not every character needs a surgically enhanced cleavage or a well-endowed manhood. As I said earlier, I like to specialize in outdoor sex. Therefore, many if not all of my characters engage in some sort of vigorous outdoor activity. Sure, it may take a few non-sexual paragraphs to describe how two couples rode their bicycles to the orgy, but it also makes them more interesting and helps explain how their beautiful bodies got that way.

I’d love to hear from others regarding the importance of realism in this business. Maybe my own views will create a dialogue for other writers to share opinions.

Barry Johnston has been writing professionally for over four years. His stories have appeared in Variations, Housewives’ Confessions and Xtreme Magazine. He is also the co-author of a non-fiction book on bicycling. You can reach him at BJohns4183@aol.com

---

Editor's Note: Barry's comments about creating a dialogue reminds me that we still need a message board. I don't want to use a free one, I'd like to add an interactive one directly to the site. Can anyone walk me through the installation of, say, Matt's WWWBoard? I have a knowledge of the basics, just can't seem to get the pieces to all fit. I'd sing your praises and plaster your name all over the site as thanx, if you'd like ;) Email me at Katy@katyterrega.com if you can help.

The Wildest Ones: Hot Biker Tales
Deadline: April 15, 2003

M. Christian is currently seeking gay male erotic short stories for his anthology project The Wildest Ones: Hot Biker Tales. Here's your chance to explore the erotic allure of the outlaw biker. This anthology is going to be a down and dirty, mean and nasty, hot oil, grease, leathers, colors, jeans, surly, kick-ass, high-octane, and burn rubber kind of book.

Stories can be in any style and genre but must always be gay male in orientation and explore the erotic power of the outlaw biker. These are to be straight up, no-shit, biker stories: orgies, trains, and all kinds of general nastiness. These are to be stories about being the meanest, the nastiest thing on the highway - and all the fun that implies.

However, please no underage characters, really excessive violence, or incest. Also, do not use the names of any past or present biker organizations or individuals - fictional groups or people only!

Stories can be about bikers of all kinds: Historical, humorous, sarcastic, deconstructive, true-to-life, transgressive, mean-ass, and/or just plain weird, but always must incite a reader to put on leathers, hop on a hog, and head out for a kick-ass time on the road. Length: 1,000 to 7,000 words Submissions should be sent to:

M. Christian
41 Sutter Street, #1012
San Francisco, CA 94104
Email submissions should be sent to:
mchristian@starbookspress.com (rtf format only, be sure to include contact information on all attachments)

West Beach Books is now accepting submissions for two new erotic collections:

Men In Jocks: Erotic Stories About Athletes and Sports Nuts

This anthology will feature sexy, hot stories about jocks and athletes and those who love them. Stories should feature one or more jocks who play some kind of sport. Stories can be erotic fiction, fantasies about celebrities or true life confessions about amateur or professional jocks.

Beef: Erotic Stories About Men With Meat On Their Bones

This anthology will feature sexy, hot stories about muscle men, beefy guys, bears and XL dudes and those who love them. Stories can be erotic fiction, fantasies about celebrities or true life confessions.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR BOTH BOOKS

We're looking for unique, imaginative stories that express passion without inhibition. We seek diversity and indeed encourage stories about all ethnic backgrounds. Writers are encouraged to be bold and take chances. The following types of writing will be accepted: short stories, erotica, true confessions, and essays (sorry, no poetry).

Deadline for both anthologies is April 1, 2003.

Logistical guidelines:

-Pennames allowed. If you story is accepted, we will need your legal name for contract purposes (kept confidential).

-Stories may be submitted via email only. We prefer Word text files emailed as attachments, but accept any text file or submissions pasted in the body of your email (if interested parties do not own a computer, we suggest free access at your local library or paid access from a company like Kinko’s).

-Files should be named the following way: Yourlastname.Yourstorytitle

-On page one of your submission, please include your name and all relevant contact info you feel comfortable giving. ***email will be the primary way we contact you. We need your most reliable email address. ***

-Submission deadline is April 1, 2003. Authors chosen will be paid an amount comparable to the going rate for anthologies and given 1 copy of the book.

-Submissions should be sent to (PLEASE SPECIFY WHICH ANTHOLOGY YOU’RE SUBMITTING TO): submissions@westbeachbooks.com

-Authors may submit as many stories as they like.

-More questions? Click here for our contacts page.

Creative guidelines:

-Shorter stories preferred. These are an anthologies, not novellas or novels. The idea is to include as many different stories as possible. 1000-5000 words is ideal.

We encourage:

-Stories that have a catchy title that is either hot, sexy, sexual, teasing, intriguing, daring, fun or funny (something that will make people browsing the table of contents want to buy this book).

-Stories that come from honest point of view and not one of "I’m here to try to entertain you and make you hot with a sex story."

-Stories that don’t read like typical porn, unless that porn is very, very good!

-Stories that reveal something about the author, the characters or the subject matter through honesty.

-Stories that reveal something about why we love the subject matter (sports or men with meat on their bones).

-Stories that are daring in nature, especially by taking the reader somewhere new or giving a fresh, new spin on an old theme.

-Stories where the author tells us something he may not share with others...secret passions not readily shared can be very revealing about you and the reader.

-Stories that don’t require a lot of editing or "fixing." Please proofread your work thoroughly and make sure the physical presentation is as professional as possible. Correct grammar and spell-checking help make a presentation professional.

-Stories where it seems like the author actually read the call for submissions themes and requirements.

-More questions? Click here for our contacts page.

Photos and Art: Please do not send us unsolicited photos. Send an inquiry with a brief description of the work, your credits, and/or a Web address with art posted to Jamie Joy Gatto.

Deadlines: Submissions are ongoing. We publish quarterly on or about the following schedule:
Anniversary Issue, February 14
Spring Issue, May 14
Summer Issue, August 14
Fall Issue, November 14

Content: Explicit sexual imagery is preferred. Writing must be sensual, preferably food or sex-oriented, thoughtful, emotion-provoking, dimensional and intelligent. Our focus is on indulgence and sensuality, but we are also looking for gender issues, alternative lifestyles, educational pieces and commentaries. No particular restrictions on profanity, except for the following suggestions:

Words We Don't Like: Please avoid using the word "boobs" for breasts in erotica. "Cum" as a verb is spelled "Come" and "i" is spelled "I" even in domination scenarios. Male and female ejaculate may be referred to the slang term as "cum" but remember that it is a noun, not a verb. Try to stick to the words "cock, dick, balls, pussy, sex, clit and cunt" to describe genitalia. We are not adamant about this genitalia labeling rule, but it's worth considering.

Length: should be a maximum of 3000 words. We prefer less: shorter is better.

ALL GENDERS AND ORIENTATIONS ACCEPTED: queer, gay, lesbian, straight, transexual, bisexual, onanism, fetish, BDSM and more. We LOVE "gritty and real" and we like diversity.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND: Romance, rhyming poetry, Penthouse Forum-style Porn, vampire stories, scat stories, rape stories, tales that consist of one long play-by-play sex scene, snuff stories. Writing with underage characters in a sexual situation, and all non-consensual sex scenarios are not acceptable. Please do not send photos, art or any attachments without a query.

Editorial Policy: We hold the right to edit all accepted submissions, however please spell check and grammar check any work submitted. We realize contributors are vital to our organization; we deeply value and respect authors. We strive to showcase talent in various forms and in countless, unique voices. Be assured, if your work is accepted for publication, we will treat both you and your work with the care and respect deserved.

Compensation: We are not offering monetary payment for submissions accepted for publication in Mind Caviar. Mind Caviar is a free publication; the entire project is run out of pocket by editors who support quality fiction, art, writing and the intrepid publication of new, edgy and sensual work. We offer our contributors a chance to participate in a beautiful and quality project which may showcase their talent and create interest in their work. We offer links and professional contact information to all participants, banner placement on the contributor's pages if desired.

Many professional erotica editors regularly visit Mind Caviar to review the fiction for possible inclusion in future anthologies. To date (1999 - 2001) many stories have been chosen to be included in anthologies, stories which originated from our publication.

Copyright: The original author, artist or photographer holds the copyright to his/her work. All rights reserved. All material submitted to Mind Caviar is reviewed in good faith that it is original work and does not infringe or violate any copyrights or copyright laws. Under no circumstances may any material in Mind Caviar be reproduced, in part or in whole, without the express written consent of the author, artist or photographer. The Toy
By Claire Thompson
ISBN # 1-58873-048-4
(http://www.renebooks.com)

One of the things I like about Claire Thompson’s work is that she constantly explores the release of hidden desires in her female characters. Sure, the men learn a little something along the way, but her primary focus is women. After reading several of her works, it is very clear that one of the things she attempts to do through the vehicle of sexual bondage is to show that the woman becomes empowered and in control of her own destiny. In each case, the main female character is almost reborn into a new confident persona that knows exactly what she wants out of life and her future. This is certainly true in her latest book, The Toy. In a delightful twist on the title, the toy in the person of Gina, comes to mean so much more than just that to herself as well as those around her.

As the novel opens, we meet the very proper and seemingly somewhat plump, Gina. She is engaged to Dwayne a young man that she first met years ago in Kindergarten. They both attend the same Church and while she has no real desires for him, she has no real desires for any other person. Her parents have assured her that God wants things this way and that she is to have Dwayne’s children. The only thing she does beyond the straight and narrow is volunteer at a local community center in a bad area of town.

Unavoidably detained one dark evening, she is abducted and knocked unconscious. When she awakens, the young virgin is horrified to discover that she is completely naked except for the strong ropes that bind her to an upright chair. Soon, she meets one of her captors and is helpless under his touch as he admires her body.

The young woman is introduced to what is in store for her as a sexual plaything for her captors. She quickly experiences her first nipple torture through the use of clothespins as well as her first spanking with a riding crop at the hands of Gordon. Gordon enjoys hurting Gina and seems to also hold power over her other captor, Frank. Frank is less sadistic than Gordon and assumes more of a role as sexual mentor to the naive and inexperienced Gina.

Frank begins to train Gina for her new duties and slowly the group dynamic begins to fundamentally change. Gina, forced to be on a diet by her captors begins to emotionally appreciate her body. Her whole point of view towards herself and the world slowly changes and as she changes the twin male characters are also forced to evolve. Attractions shift between the three as each character slowly evolves. As the toy begins to subtly at first assert herself, Frank and Gordon are each forced to confront themselves as well as their interactions leading to ultimately, profound changes in everyone’s lives as the power shifts to the former captive.

This is a very enjoyable erotic read full of interesting characters and themes. Claire Thompson continues to provide her fans and readers with interesting and complicated works that function on many different levels. She remains a great pleasure to read and I look forward to more of her work.

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
