Katy Terrega
=========================================

Hello all, hope your new year is going splendidly!

Our family has recovered from all the old year festivities and have hunkered back down in our familiar school/work routine. I love getting back to a regular work schedule but boy do I hate getting up at 6 a.m! In my lifetime I've had to get up earlier and I've had to get up later, but I definitely prefer later. I'm one of those people who starts feeling seriously motivated (especially for writing) around noon. If I could just work from noon till 6 pm or so I'd be happy. No such luck, maybe when the kids are grown...

I'm hoping to have Sex-writer.com up by February 1st. Cross your fingers for me! I'll send out an announcement when it goes live, in the meantime feel free to check out what's there and tell me what you think.

Remember that great article on writing porn scripts that we ran last issue? I forgot to include Emily Dubberely's bio at the end, so I'm doing it below. Be sure to check out her site - Cliterati.co.uk - it's great.

In other newsletter news we've got some good listings, a great column by C.B. Potts on the The Business Of Writing and a good Goings On.

I talked about "The Bald-Headed Hermit And The Artichoke-An Erotic Thesaurus' last week, but I neglected to give the UK readers a place to purchase it. It's a truly fantastic book, I've had occasion to use it many times in the last 2 weeks and it's a huge help. You can get it in the UK here and in the US here. Or check out the Resources Page

Remember, I'm always looking for articles to run; I'm paying a whopping $5 for them and I don't mind reprints. On a similar note, if you enjoy this newsletter, please consider donating to the cause so we can continue to pay the big money(!) You can order a voluntary subscription for a year for only $5 right here - http://www.katyterrega.com/writersorderform.html

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- More About Emily Dubberley ---
===========================================

Emily Dubberley launched Cliterati.co.uk, a sex site for women, at the end of August last year. It's entirely text based, doesn't feature anything underage or non-consensual and gives free advertising to sexual health charities. Anyone can submit work to the site although all work submitted is subject to editing and Cliterati rejects stories deemed inappropriate.

After a few months, Cliterati started attracting so much interest that Emily decided to go freelance so that she could spend more time on it. It's now getting half a million page impressions per month and is growing fast.

After loads of women submitted bisexual fantasies to Cliterati, she set up Bibibaby.com - a free dating site for bicurious women.

She's written the script for the new Lovers' Guide video, 'Sexual Positions', which is out in February. The Lovers' Guide liked my script, and as a result, she landed the editorship of the new Lovers' Guide magazine which involved some frankly terrifying deadlines and much looking at naked people as work.

She writes the fortnightly 'Sex and Loving' newsletter for Messagizer.com and is 'Chief Orgasm Officer' (honest!) for Lovehoney. The latter entails reviewing sex toys; by far the strangest definition of work ever.

In addition to sex writing, she also writes about the internet and provides marketing consultancy to a range of clients.

The Business Of Writing

You should be just about recovered from New Year’s by now. Even the most fervent guest will have left the party, bleary eyed, and ready for his own bed. The dog has eaten all the leftover hors d’ouevres. The wine stain in the carpet is decidedly permanent. Now it’s time to face those New Year’s Resolutions.

Some resolutions will already be broken – and that’s OK. I’m not going to chastise you for the cigarette butts in the ashtray. You’ll quit when you’re ready. And the new fitness regime? Speaking as someone who seldom exercises more than my opinion, I understand.

But there is one resolution I won’t let you ignore. It’s too important to slide. And, as an added bonus, if you jump on it now, you’ll be ahead of the game this time next year. What is this resolution, you ask? The resolution that you, as a serious writer, have made to treat your writing like a business.

Now, even though I am actually an accountant in my other life, I’m not going to offer specific business advice within this column. Everything here is intended as general information, and should be checked with your financial advisors or tax preparer.

Step one is to start keeping careful records. Track how much money you’ve been paid, and how much you’re owed. Most taxpayers are cash-basis, so you won’t have to pay taxes on this money until you’ve actually received it. Trust me, though, once those dollars grace your palm, they’re income, and they have to be reported. Photocopy checks before you cash them, and give receipts for any cash payments you receive. Print out regular statements from Pay-Pal or other Internet payment programs. All of these will be valuable support for income claims should Uncle Sam decide to audit you.

If you’re making more than $600 dollars in a given year, you will also be subject to self-employment tax. Consult your tax professional about planning payments. Depending on how successful you are in any given year, you may need to make quarterly payments.

Money owed to you is an asset, and increases your net worth. It is important to have an accurate accounting of these receivables, especially when doing things like applying for credit, or (if it’s not such a good day) filing for divorce. If one is in dire financial straits, it is sometimes possible to sell receivables. Companies that specialize in this often charge exorbitant percentages, but if you need emergency cash, it may be an option. Be advised that most factor companies have a minimum balance that they will consider buying.

The other thing to track is how much money you’re spending related to your writing. Legitimate business expenses may be deducted from your writing income, thereby reducing your tax burden.

The key thoughts here are legitimate expenses and documentation. The easiest way to provide documentation is to keep all receipts, canceled checks, and credit card slips used for related expenses.

Legitimate expenses get a little more nit-picky. Some items are pretty cut and dried – typing paper, computer cartridges, and postage will raise no eyebrows. Given documentation, you will be able to deduct the magazines from your favorite adult store – but be prepared to defend the purchases should an audit occur. For example, it would be completely appropriate for me to deduct my purchases of gay male literature, as the majority of my writing sales go to gay male markets. It would be difficult to rationalize a purchase of (for example) water sports mags, as I have never written any stories in that genre.

Now to every accountant’s bugaboo – the home office deduction. Before you get all excited, let me just shoot you down now. There’s no way the IRS is going to allow you to deduct your entire mortgage just because you write from home. Same thing for electricity, heat, redecorating, etc. To qualify, a space must be used exclusively for business, and be clearly separate in function from the domicile. The computer desk in the bedroom is not going to cut it. Again, check with your financial advisor, but the vast majority of us will not be able to claim the home office.

If your writing business is operating at a loss, it may reduce your overall tax liability. Be advised that if this occurs more than three years in a row, the IRS will consider the writing a hobby and disallow all business expense deductions.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to finance-related issues, but I’ll stop here. Just by maintaining clear and accurate records and consulting a competent tax professional come tax time, you’ll be heads and shoulders above the last minute April 15th crowd. For all my non-American readers, I apologize, but have less than no knowledge of the taxation and financial issues in your countries.

And don’t worry – next month’s column will be all leather. Trust me. I’m an accountant. Who knows sadism better?

--- Market Listings ---
============================================

Paying Markets:

New Concepts Publishing

Currently, New Concepts Publishing is looking to put together new anthologies targeted to the growing erotic and spicy romance readership.

New projects we're accepting stories for:

CAPTURED: a Romance Anthology featuring romance novellas with a SPICY or CARNAL rating and a high level of sexual tension. Novellas in this collection would fall between 20,000 - 39,000 words.

CAPTURED stories can take place in any setting, time period, or romance subgenre including: medieval, futuristic, time travel, regency, etc.

Some examples of what could be done for this anthology include: Bounty Hunter, Medieval Siege, Stolen Brides, Viking Pirate, Alien Abduction, etc. The capture can play a large or small role in the story but must include this theme as well as romance elements.

We are looking to release the electronic and trade edition simultaneously with this collection in the next few months. Please email AndreaDePasture@newconceptspublishing.com (subject heading: Captured anthology) with your query letter and detailed synopsis. If you are a writer unpublished by NCP, please include your first ten pages of the story.

-

ALIEN ENCOUNTERS: a Romance Anthology featuring novellas with a SPICY or CARNAL sensuality rating and plenty of sexual tension. These novellas would be 20,000 - 39,000 words. ENCOUNTERS stories are limitless with possibilities and can take place in contemporary or futuristic settings but must include some alien elements in their theme as well as romance.

We are looking to release the electronic and trade edition simultaneously with this collection sometime this year. If you are interested in participating, please email AndreaDePasture@newconceptspublishing.com (subject heading: Alien Encounters Anthology) with your query letter and detailed synopsis. If you are a writer unpublished by NCP, please include your first ten pages of the story.

-

DARK and DANGEROUS: a Dark Romantic Anthology featuring novellas with a SPICY or CARNAL sensuality rating and a high level of sexual tension. Novellas in this collection would be 20,000 - 39,000 words.

We're aiming for an October release for this anthology. Stories would be similar in vein to our DARK DESIRES series. DANGEROUS stories would include the darker elements of romance and the paranormal: vampires, werecreatures, ghosts, demons, incubus, etc. These can also be gothic in nature. Essentially we're looking for erotic romantic horror with ultra sexy heroes including some romance elements.

We are looking to release the electronic and trade edition simultaneously with this collection sometime this year. If you are interested in participating, please email AndreaDePasture@newconceptspublishing.com (subject heading: Dark and Dangerous anthology) with your query letter and detailed synopsis. If you are a writer unpublished by NCP, please include your first ten pages of the story.

-

Another anthology we're hoping to bring out in the coming months would be fairy tales with your own personal slant, written to SPICY or CARNAL ratings. Again, these would be 20,000 - 39,000 words and would include romance elements.

We are looking to release the electronic and trade edition simultaneously with this collection sometime this year. If you are interested in participating, please email AndreaDePasture@newconceptspublishing.com (subject heading: Fairy Tale anthology) with your query letter and detailed synopsis. If you are a writer unpublished by NCP, please include your first ten pages of the story.

-

NCP is also accepting short stories (10,000 - 15,000 words) for our LOVE BITES series. This is a great way for interested authors to break into a new market and target new readers eager for erotic fiction. We also feel stories can be written fairly quickly for a good return on royalties and will be priced $2.00 - $2.50, download only. Stories can take place in any setting or subgenre but must include romance elements as well as fall under the SPICY or CARNAL rating system.

If you are interested, please email an editor with your query letter and detailed synopsis. If you are a writer unpublished by NCP, please include your first ten pages of the story.

Andrea DePasture, Senior Editor:

Tiffany Ayers, Associate Editor:

We are also accepting novella to full novel length books for CARNAL PLEASURES and DARK DESIRES.

SENSUALITY RATING:

SPICY: heavy sexual tension; graphic details and more sexual encounters

CARNAL: graphic sex and language; may be offensive to delicate readers; contains many sexual encounters and can include unconventional sex not normally found in romance; may or may not be romance; typically known as erotica

THERMOEROTIC.com
Submission Deadline: February 10th, 2003

So you want to submit a story/illustration/articles to thermoerotic?

Here are a few things you need to know....

All stories must fall under one of the three laws, but the sky is the limit as to the story content. Read on for details on how to submit.

How do I submit a story/ illustrations/articles?

For stories: All text must be emailed as part of the body. Make sure it is sent in PLAIN TEXT. No simultaneous submissions. Stories previously published will be considered. All attachments will be deleted. Please state which law of thermoerotica you feel your story best fits under in the subject line. ( This is a must or your story will be rejected.)

For illustrations/photographs: All images must be e-mailed .gif or .jpg. The nature of the illustration (BDSM, Supernatural, etc.) along with the word ILLUSTRATION next to it must be in the subject line.

Articles: Query first.

How many stories/articles/illustrations can I submit at the same time?

For stories: No more than one story at a time. Once you have heard a response from us about your story, then feel free to send another one.

For articles: Query please.

For illustrations/photographs: We will accept up to four pieces. If you would like to showcase you work. We will accept no more than seven pieces.

How long can my story/article be or how big can my illustration be?

For Stories: must be between 1,000-5,000 words. Please add the word count at the top of the page. However, if you have a REALLY good story and it is longer than 5,000, then email us. We can discuss how to make it work.

For illustrations/photographs: We would prefer the ranges be between 5 inches by 5 inches to 8 by 11.5 inches. Anything bigger or smaller will be considered. Just email us with a small explanation and we'll go from there.

Articles: Query first.

How do I know if my story/illustration/article has been accepted?

For stories: We will email you telling you if we like your story or not. Stories that show promise, but need some tweaking... we will accept, but we will email you telling you to refine your work and you can submit again. Please pay attention to the basic structure of your story. And our biggest pet peeve-- words that are spelled incorrectly and lots of grammatical errors. That is what spell and grammar check is for.

The general wait for story/illustration/article acceptance/rejection is 2-3 weeks.

For illustrations/photographs: Same as above.

Articles: Same as above.

How long do I have to keep my story/ illustrations/articles posted on thermoerotic?

For stories: We ask that once you submit your story that it remain on the site for three months, then it will be archived. After the three month duration, you are free to reprint your story anywhere you chose to. This is strongly advised because the longer you keep your story/illustrations on the site the greater chance you have of becoming familiar to other writers/illustrators. Use this site to your advantage and build up your credibility in the writing/illustrating field.

For illustrations/photographs: See above.

Articles: Varies-(More times than not, articles will stay for the duration of the month. Which is four weeks.)

What kind of stories, articles or illustrations does thermoerotic accept?

For stories: We have very open minds, but we do not want the generic erotic story of 'dirty words' thrown here and there. Such words do not make a good story. What we are looking for is rich stories filled with character, unique writing style and detail, especially ones that exploit one or all of the five senses. Excite us. Give us stories that are unique and stand out from the traditional erotic story. Make us want to reach out for our vibrators to quench the undeniable hunger that has overtaken our minds and bodies. It doesn't have to contain a lot of sex, sometimes an erotic story with just a hint of sex sends us over the edge. We LOVE stories that are well written with a well thought out plot. If you are just looking to see your name in print, it will show in your story and the chances of it getting rejected are high.

For illustrations/photographs: We have a particular liking to couples, but do NOT let that deter you. Illustrations and Photographs can be subtle, which hints at erotica to the all out erotica. You are the artist, so do what tickles your fancy, but be sure to read what is not acceptable. You will find that the rules are simple. (Yes, charcoal, watercolors, pastel, black and white and the like are acceptable. If you are not sure, query.)

Articles: Query first, but we like articles featuring people, interviews, how to's...the list is endless.. If you have a great article idea then submit... We're always looking for fresh articles to read.

What kind of stories/illustrations/articles are not acceptable?

Stories and Articles: Underage characters, mostly because we do not want to read stories of young children. So, all characters must be +18. Bestiality, snuff, and violence. (If you are going to write BDSM make sure that it's Safe, Sane, and Consensual.)

For illustrations/Photographs: Graphical violence, snuff, bestiality, underage characters. We also will not accept computer generated images or animation.

I'm ready to submit, what else do I need to know?

Please add your real name and your pen name, this is for copyright protection. We will not give out your name for any reason, but we need it for publishing purposes. Please enclose the title of the story, category, word count, and a 100 word or less bio about yourself. If you have been previously published, please state where and when. Don't forget to add your email address.

How much do I get paid for submitting?

As much as we would like to pay everyone as much as Playboy offers for erotic fiction stories, all we can offer is a small payment, recognition, bios, and links. The payment for stories is not a whole lot. It's bigger than a breadbox, but smaller than dinner for two at a nice restaurant. Right now, all we can do is pay for stories and that is all. We will announce when we will be accepting illustrations and articles.

Later, Thermoerotic will be compiling an anthology, and if your work is selected for inclusion, there will be payment in the form of two print copies.

Please hit the SUBMIT button, or email to: submissions@thermoerotic.com if after reading through everything and you feel that your story/illustration fits thermoerotic standards.

There you have it ladies and gentlemen. Now it's up to you to create erotic stories within those laws. Remember the sky is the limit and have fun!! We look forward to your articles/stories/illustrations and photographs.

Tell me what's going on. Have you made a sale? Do you have a piece being published? Let me know and I'll print it here for all to see! (It helps if you write it in the format above; makes it easier for me to just cut and paste.)

---

If you sent me your Goings On but don't see it here, just let me know and I'll get it out.

---

Check out my column at http://www.absolutewrite.com/ on - what else?! - writing porn. This week I cheated and sent in a reprint - "Targeting Your Markets" - that talks about the importance of writing specifically for your markets. Check it out here (altho it may not be up just yet...) - http://www.absolutewrite.com/specialty_writing/porn_101.htm

Check out the new and improved, totally revamped story site at KatyTerrega.com and let me know what you think! Or there's always the (now free) Daily Jack-Off Stories to peruse...

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
