Happy New Year everyone!
Sorry I wasn't able to get the newsletter out till now but I'm still so behind with work from my latest crash I can hardly see straight ;) If you've written me and I haven't gotten back to you, please bear with me.
I did finally get my computer back up and running (I'm writing this from the living room instead of the basement!) but I'll be getting a new (reconditioned) one as well, so it's still going to take some time to get things in order. And since, in the interim, I've pretty much forgotten everything I ever knew about not only newsletter production but also site programming, it'll take a few more weeks for me to finish Sex-Writer.com as well. But feel free to take a look at it and give me your feedback on it so far. Many of you have written to tell me that you want it to focus on high paying, professional markets, and to have more info, like on specific genres and markets.
Hope you all had a great holiday season, we sure did. And we capped it off by going to a friend's house on New Year's Eve and playing Trivial Pursuit until it was time to ring in the New Year. Pretty exciting for a family that usually stays home and yawns while watching the ball drop. We figure we'll make it a tradition ;)
On a work-related note, here's a great opportunity for you Colorado based writers...
"West Side Books holds its annual erotic reading on Wednesday January 15,
2003. We are looking for readers/writers willing to read and talk about their
erotica. If you are interested, please contact Carol Jacobson at
303-455-1029 (home) or 303-480-0220 (store) for more information."
We've got an especially good issue today. Remember last issue we talked about porn movie screenplays? Well, Emily Dubberley, founder of Cliterati, wrote a great article for us on that very subject. Plus, we've got Kevin's Book Review Corner, many good listings, some great Goings On and, for those of you interested in a great Erotic Thesaurus, check out Q and A!
Remember, I'm always looking for articles to run; I'm paying a whopping $5 for them and I don't mind reprints. On a similar note, if you enjoy this newsletter, please consider donating to the cause so we can continue to pay the big money(!) You can order a voluntary subscription for a year for only $5 right here - http://www.katyterrega.com/writersorderform.html
As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- Writing Porn Screenplays ---
--- By Emily Dubberley ---
===========================================
When most people think of porn, they think of gyrating bodies rather than
skilful scripting. After all, the dialogue in the average porn film is
hardly classic literature. But someone has to write these scripts. So how
do you get into it? And does it differ from other kinds of erotic writing?
I recently picked up the commission to write the latest Lovers' Guide video.
The Lovers' Guide is a 'How to' sex film series - and quite a large one at
that, with the first video selling over 1.5 million copies. Prior to
securing the commission, I was a combination of erotic writer (I founded
Cliterati.co.uk) and 'sexpert' (according to the media, at least) writing
articles on most aspects of sex for a variety of websites, newspapers and
magazines. I'd written radio scripts before - both erotic and more
traditional - but video scripts were an entirely new area.
Unlike many sex films, the Lovers' Guide, as it's educational, doesn't endeavour to have a plot. It shows numerous sex acts and explains what to do to make
them better. In this case, the film was about sex positions, so the starting
point, as with many aspects of sex writing, was research. If you're writing
about sex, you need to be informed about it, so dig out those classics; the
Karma Sutra, the Perfumed Garden and their ilk. Get your hands on some more
modern books too, to make sure you're covering everything that you need to
know.
Even if you're writing a more narrative based sex film, research is
valuable. After all, if you want a woman to ejaculate in the film, you need
to make sure she'd getting good G-Spot stimulation!
Next, figure out your structure. In the case of the Lovers' Guide, we
decided to split the positions into nine main sections based on the
'action'; man on top, woman on top, from behind, side by side, sitting,
standing, advanced, oral and anal positions. In a more conventional porn
film, divide it into scenes, depending on location, the actors taking part
or the camera or narrative flow. Remember, filming costs money, and the
more elaborate your location, the more expensive it is. Changing actors or
scenes also takes time - and time is money - so keep things simple. The same
goes for costumes, fixtures and fittings and all that kind of thing.
Remember, any action referred to in the script will need to be shown so
don't mention anything too expensive!
Think about feasibility. Obviously, films aren't necessarily shot in the
right order but it's worth noting that after a shower scene the character's
hair will be wet, so you'll either need to incorporate this into the plot or
leave such a scene until last.
As with anything involving spoken word, go by the three words per second
rule. However, unlike radio scripts, you've got the visual medium to work
with too. Never has 'show, don't tell' been so true. Having dialogue over
the top of the action can be more of a distraction than anything else so
keep things concise. Moans and groans can be far more effective in a sex
scene than trying to force in cheesy - or otherwise - dialogue.
Find out whether you need to include the camera directions or production
notes. Chances are, you'll need to give at least the latter. The easiest way
is to write your script then set up a separate document with a four column
table; one for an outline of who's in the shot, another for camera
directions (which will probably be left blank for the producer to scribble
in) another for director's notes (who's doing what to whom. What props are
required. You're more likely to have to fill this one in) The fourth column
contains your script, broken down into sections that tie in to what's
happening on screen. Make sure that you relate the script to what's going on
on screen at all times; it may sound stupid but video is primarily a visual
medium so use it!
So how do you pick up the commissions? You look for them! I met the Lovers'
Guide director at a party, told him I was a writer and said that if he ever
needed anything writing to let me know. (No, I don't go to posh parties -
was just a standard kind of pub gathering.) A month later, I was on to my
fourth draft and six weeks later, I was watching the film being made and
helping the actors get into position. Go to sexy events where porn producers
are likely to hang out. Tell everyone you know that you want to write a sexy
film script. If you ask, you're more likely to get. Word of mouth is
important. If and when you land a commission, do it well and do it on time.
I had a week to produce a script - including all revisions. They got it
early, on brief and as a result, have recommended me on to other people.
The first time, as with anything, is a sharp learning curve, but do it well
and you'll get what you want.

KINK: TRUE TALES FROM THE SEXUAL ADVENTURER
Deadline: January 30, 2003
Remember Frank Zappa’s song "Dirty Love," with its mention of "some nasty little pamphlet in your daddy’s bottom drawer"? Remember the Kinks’ song "Lola," who turns out to be a crossdresser? Well, kink has come a helluva long way since then. Now our beloved fetishes are called (yawn) "paraphilia" by the PC (psychologically coopted). Who’da thunk it?
Kinky by definition is considered of or relating to eccentric sexual
practices. Kinky is as kinky does, with plenty of props and bodily fluids
(and gases and solids). We’ve explored the well-known gambits of rimming, piss, farts, scars, scat, fisting, pits, spit, snot, stinky feet; nips, piercing, foreskins, tats, dildoes of every shape and size, cutting,
scarification, double- and triple-fucking; fat, hair, fur, shaving, waxing,
whipping, rubber, latex, leather, plastic wrap and mummifying; slaves with dog collars and French maid outfits and costuming, underwear, jocks, socks, boots, masks, and clothes fetishes of every kind; slings & sex furniture, chains & whips, cigars and pipes, drugs, mud wrestling.
But one man’s vanilla can still be considered kink to the masses. We’re
looking for true stories that develop the connection/motivation for the
people involved in the scene. We are looking for first-hand experiences that cover any of the above activities with a fresh perspective.
Also, what haven’t we explored yet that absolutely must be opened up and plunged into? What sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, thoughts do we desire and make us hot and wet, but have been kept from, or too afraid (or too uncreative, or lazy, or stupid) to try?
Is there anything sensual left banned, contraband, verboten, prohibited,
proscripted? Now, are there no no-nos unknown? Perhaps not, but there are limits as to what we can publish: no bestiality, pedophilia, morbidity,
murder, necrophilia, nonconsensual torture and abuse. Which still leaves a wonder-filled world of weird and exciting passions to explore.
Give us something brilliant and offbeat and hot hot hot. Something that will tug at our hearts at the same time we’ll be tugging our hardons. Something to make us scratch our heads and say, "I’ve never experienced that in quite that context" or "Wow, I’ve never even thought to try that." And believe us,
between the two of us, we’ve tried plenty of kinky shit before.

MEN, AMPLIFIED
Deadline: January 15, 2003
Okay, boys. You can run along and play now. The men are bonding, gathering around the primordial campfire, taking the control they’ve earned the hard way. They intend to swap stories, to swap saliva, to swap semen if they so desire, as is their birthright.
This book will be about men who love men. About men who dare to define the word ‘love’ for themselves, as best suits who they are.
No, I am not seeking stories about virgins, but I am seeking stories that explore the psychology of adult male sexuality. I am interested in men who are single, in couples, in the dynamic of relationships, in infidelity, monogamy and promiscuity, in obsessive sexuality, in the lust for love and the love of lust. In other words: not just in men, but men, amplified.
We have all learned by now, glorious men of experience that we have become, that exquisitely constructed sexual depiction should warrant inclusion within a great story, that it not be gratuitous. As an editor, I am hypersensitive to cliché, but otherwise give authors of homoerotica free reign to breathe life into the minds and bodies and motivations of their characters in ways that will inspire the reader to disseminate the essential prose and poetry that so demands to spatter the printed page…
I encourage established “masters of male erotica” and new talent alike to think about what the title “Men, Amplified” means to you. To assume that this anthology is about penis size would be… a mistake. That said, I look forward to hearing from you.
Michael Huxley

Prairie Gothic: A Lesbian Erotic Novel
By Jean Roberta - 2002 - Amatory Ink
(www.amatory-ink.co.uk)
As frequent readers know, I have a strong bias toward books that are multi-themed and complex, where the erotica is just one of the themes covered. So many of the so called “erotica novels” on the market today are not actually novels but more along the likes of letters strung together. While there certainly seems to be a market for that kind of stuff, proving once again that there is a market for anything, they don’t work for me. If you have written that sort of thing then it is best to send it elsewhere and not waste both of our time.
However, having said that, no one could accuse Jean Roberta of writing one of those novels. Her work, Prairie Gothic: A Lesbian Erotic Novel is a complex multi-themed novel where the erotica is just one of the many elements in the work. I freely admit that one of her themes regarding Canadian politics and the Labor movement on Canada went completely over my head. I simply don’t have any knowledge regarding the issue and barely understood (I think) her parallel theme regarding treatment of native peoples by the Canadian government. While my own ignorance weakened my enjoyment of the novel, the novel still was very interesting and enjoyable.
While I did not get the Canadian politics theme, the ideas regarding acceptance of yourself for who you are no matter what, as well as learning to trust in others came through loud and clear. Trust in others is an issue regardless of your sexual orientation and sharing the inner secrets that cause pain is never easy for anyone.
In the beginning of the book, Kelly is a journalism student and goes to a gay bar for her first time. She runs into a friend from school, Neil, who in turn is out and about with his male companion, Philip. They warn her to stay with them until she knows who is safe to associate with and whom to avoid. But Kelly is an unknown quantity for the regulars in the bar and that fact, coupled with her naivety make many in the bar want to be with her in a physical sense. As naïve as she is about the lifestyle, she senses the sexual undercurrents around her.
“She wanted to be touched and held, even fiercely, but not just because she was fresh meat.”
At the same time, she wants them all as well and her body is sending her messages that she needs to address. Soon Philip lures her downstairs to a private area in the basement and before long, the two bi-sexual men temporarily assuage her needs. While her needs are somewhat met, afterwards she is left feeling a bit used and dirty.
What Kelly really wants and craves, even if she can’t accept the idea totally, is the touch of a woman. She meets Vivienne and while there is an immediate lust connection they also click on another more emotional and spiritual level. Both women are carrying a lot of baggage from their respective pasts as well as expectations regarding honesty and relationships. One of the expectations both women seem to share is a romantic illusion as a heroine in a fantasy realm.
“Like Juliet, Vivienne had wanted her lover to deny her family so that she and the one who loved her could be united against the world.”
But reality is far different and both women discover that life is not ever going to be a fairy tale. As they learn hard and sometimes painful lessons about themselves and each other, their world changes dramatically. The novel follows their budding romance and relationship through a number of months and several rocky periods.
This is a complex multi themed work that is enjoyable and very erotic at times. Those readers who are looking for something more with their erotica will certainly enjoy this one. Readers familiar with Canadian politics will certainly get more out of some of the dialogue discussions in the work. However, regardless of political elements, the nature of trust in others as well as each person in his or her self comes through loud and clear. This is one book that should not be missed.

I just discovered your newsletter and intend to check out your publications soon as I get my next paycheck. I've mostly a music journalist but have published a few stories here and there, all with strong erotic content. At any rate, I'm pleased to announce that my story "Live Transmission" has been accepted by N.T. Morley for the upcoming Slave anthology. Again, great job you're doing and I look forward to communicating with you in the future.

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!
I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.
I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.
You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
