From The Editor

Hope all you North Carolina readers are powered (and warmed) up! One of our readers was without power in his house for three days and I know that there are many more still waiting for service to be restored.

Brrrr....

On a semi-related note, are you all gearing up for the holidays? Last year our family did everything, including getting the tree and shopping for Xmas presents and putting up decorations, at the last minute. Doing it late like that kind of detracted from the general holiday spirit and so I swore that this year we'd start earlier. Now, don't get me wrong, we haven't actually done anything yet, but we will! This week! I'm going to dig those decorations out and we're gonna deck these halls! See, my holiday spirits are already much improved. Good luck with your own holiday plans!

I'm still plugging away at Sex-Writer.com, adding pages and collecting info for the articles and Q & A's. Those of you who've visited the site say you like it and that you'd be interested in subscribing as long as it provides quality information. That's my goal, to provide writers with resources that will enable them to make money writing about sex. Take a look at the above url and see what you think, I'd love your feedback.

We've got a good issue; a great column from C.B. Potts on the benefits of starting a writer's group, three really great listings and a bunch of very good Goings On. Also, I have a question for y'all in Q and A.

Remember, I'm always looking for articles to run; I'm paying a whopping $5 for them and I don't mind reprints. On a similar note, if you enjoy this newsletter, please consider donating to the cause so we can continue to pay the big money(!) You can order a voluntary subscription for a year for only $5 right here - http://www.katyterrega.com/writersorderform.html

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- What I Didn't Know... ---
--- Musings By C.B. Potts ---
===========================================

Writer's Group Basics

You’re almost finished. After two weeks of hard labor, your short story is done. Everything is perfect – word choice, characterization, pacing, even the delicate choreography of intimate action. All you have to do is drop your manuscript in an envelope, give it to the postman, and await the inevitable fame and glory that is your due as a porn writer. There’s only one problem, one hesitation that stays your hand. What if everything is not as great as you think? What if the envelope you’re so proudly clutching contains nothing but crap?

Enter the writer’s group. Done properly, a writer’s group can be the most valuable ally an author has. They are there to provide critiques, support, and encouragement. Shared experiences form strong bonds, based on mutual understanding and respect.

That sounds nice, I know. But where in the world do you find a writer’s group for what so many of us are writing? It’s difficult to find someone well versed in grammar and the niceties of spanking fiction. Usually it’s a choice between one or the other.

Additionally, there’s the added pressure of ‘outing’ yourself as a porn writer. Although I am fairly open about my writing, I find it impossible to share actual text with some people. Deep and twisted bondage fantasies shared over the cold anonymity of cyber-space? Fine. But shared with my day care provider, local librarian or the lady who sells mushrooms at the farmers market? I don’t think so.

My solution has been to share my writing with a few close friends – each with a different purpose. I have one very open-minded grammar buddy who ruthlessly expunges dangling modifiers and lectures on pronoun use. On the other hand, I have a few friends who read my work for what one charmingly called "The Wet Factor". I’ve never mixed the two groups – they would be incredibly uncomfortable together – but I do mix the critiques they give me. Taken as a whole, the results address the totality of my work, from the erotic to the prosaic.

This isn’t the ideal solution. Having had my more mainstream work ripped apart by a critique group was one of the most enlightening experiences of my career. There’s a certain energy when readers dissect a story together. It allows the writer to see what didn’t work and what REALLY didn’t work. If you can gather enough like minded and qualified people to form your own group, I applaud you and urge you to go for it.

A few hints when forming your group: First, limit the number of members. This usually isn’t a problem – I couldn’t imagine finding twelve porn writers within the auspices of my small town – but too large a group for any purpose is unmanageable. You want to be able to have realistic group discussion, and beyond twelve, that’s impossible. Confidentiality is important. It’s a cold truth, but porn writers are not the most valued members of our society. Each individual can decide how ‘out’ they want to be, but that’s not a group decision. Five years from now, you may not still be meeting, but all the writers will still have spouses, families, jobs, and other relationships they’ll want to maintain.

It’s nice to have writers at all levels of their career mingle in one group. The more experienced authors can guide both the rank beginner and the more advanced, a few-sales-under-the-belt writer. More importantly, the mid-level writer has the opportunity to teach as well as learn. If forming a group isn’t an option for you, there is another great source for support – the Internet. Some writers may even be more comfortable with this choice, as it adds another layer of privacy to the whole process. There are writer’s communities/chat groups/e-lists for every persuasion. It’s a great way to meet people you’d never run into driving around town. Additionally, it’s a 24/7 resource, for when those plaguing self-doubts hit at 3 a.m.

Once you have this group in place, don’t be afraid to access it. Share your work, and listen to the comments and critiques made. If a majority of readers point out the same problem, chances are it needs to be worked on. The group can also be the place to say, "This is ready for publication! Send it somewhere!"

With a little luck, they’ll be right! Then it will be time to celebrate with your friends – and to listen to the critique of your latest story.

You didn’t think the group would let you rest on your laurels, did you?

Paying Markets:

THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BEST NEW EROTICA VOL 3
Edited by Maxim Jakubowski

Guidelines

There are no real guidelines for length or subject matter and by now I expect people are used to my sometimes idiosyncratic tastes and choices from previous Mammoth volumes. But if you are in doubt, submit; I'm always happy to consider material.

Stories should have been published (anthologies, books, magazines, web mags, ebooks) online or in print during the calendar year 2002 and should be sent to me by mail, NOT e-mail. As to types of stories, my tastes are both varied and idiosyncratic and can be deduced from reading the 7 previous Mammoth Erotica volumes, all still in print.

Send manuscripts or photocopies to:

Maxim Jakubowski
95 Finchley Lane
London NW4 1BY, UK.

Recommendations by e mail to murder_london@compuserve.com but NOT stories, please!

Deadline: January 31st, 2003

After several months of reading your newsletter, I finally have some good news to share!

I have had two stories published at Satin Slippers (satinslippers.com)! Both are under "BDSM;" one is entitled "Torture," and the other is "Reconnecting."

--- Q & A ---
===========================================

This week I received yet another request for information on writing screenplays for porn videos, which unfortunately I am unable to provide. As far as I know, porn videos are mostly shot without scripts, and any tweaking of the plot that needs to happen is handled on the set.

But I certainly could be wrong.

Do any of you have any inside information on the subject? If so, feel free to share ;)

---

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
