Hope you're all ready for Thanksgiving!

Here in Colorado it's more like Christmas what with our cold weather (20 degrees this morning) and our snow ("Only three inches?" wailed my daughter this morning as she struggled to wake up for school. "Why couldn't it have been more like 3 feet?!") But I can't complain since it's sunny and melting as we speak.

I know, I know, I promised to have the Sex-Writer.com site done by now but what can I say? I lied. Actually my tardiness is due to a very big deadline today, a deadline which I still have not met. After that, and a couple more deadlines and, oh yeah, Thanksgiving and the kids being off school, well, I'll keep working on it.

I am actually working steadily at it, it's just taking forever. But I promise to unveil it in the next 2-5 weeks (it'll be my New Year's resolution!) I've got the domain set up, please take a look and let me know what you think. You can click through the opening pages and get a taste of what it will offer; I'd really love to get your feedback! I want it to be a great source of info for writers so help me out and tell me what you think...Is it easy to navigate so far? Is it something you'll be interested in buying? Do you think it will offer what you need? It's at http://www.sex-writer.com (Don't forget the dash between Sex and Writer!)

We've got a big issue for you today; Kevin reviews "Frog: A Tale of Sexual Torture and Degradation" by Claire Thompson, Sascha Illyvich talks about "Risky Reviews," and we've got three good market listings. No Goings On, tho, which is odd. Hopefully you'll send me good news soon!

Remember, I'm always looking for articles to run; I'm paying a whopping $5 for them and I don't mind reprints. On a similar note, if you enjoy this newsletter, please consider donating to the cause so we can continue to pay the big money(!) You can order a voluntary subscription for a year for only $5 right here - http://www.katyterrega.com/writersorderform.html

And, as usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

Your manuscript has just been bought, published and is now on it’s way for the public to purchase, read and enjoy. Congrats! It’s difficult to get that far to begin with, but now comes a difficult choice. Do you submit your MS for review? If so, whom do you send your work to? What if the critics are harsh and critical of something you put out?

What if they are? You can still use that with the help of other positive reviews to help market your work. I’m going to show you how to take risks and make the most out of your reviews, regardless of how favorable they are.

Let’s look at something I know about, my work. I recently released “Dedicated to Her”, a short story collection of BDSM tales blended with romance on CD. Eager to gain reviews and get the buzz out about my new “product” I sent a copy to Sensual Romance, seeking reviews. Sensual Romance at Writerspace.com caters to the entire romance genre but holds more traditional themes on love and romance. There is room for BDSM but generally the focus isn’t on the acts of BDSM.

I thought marketing myself as a romance writer with an edge would catch their attention. Three of the stories had been published previously; I hoped I had a chance at a favorable review.

A few days before I released the CD, I submitted the MS to Sensual Romance and discovered I had readers. When judgment day came - Isn’t that how we all feel? - my shit got blasted. The reviewer called my stories boring. She recapped three of the five stories on the CD, and didn’t bother to read the latter two, which in my opinion were the best ones.

The nerve! I had a good mind to email the reviewer and point out how unfair she’d been with my precious MS. I didn’t bother seeking quid pro quo. One review does not sink an author. Throughout your career and mine, we’re bound to receive less than favorable reviews.

Ready to give up - this is where support from others comes in - I let the MS sit, along with my plans to release the CD with such an unfavorable review already out amongst the Sensual Romance readers. Two days later, another review was released along with a note from the Sensual Romance Reviews Managing Editor saying how my CD was “one of those books that appeals to a very specific niche audience.”

That’s not bad. This was a risk, after all. A quick glance at my website will reveal that most of my fetish work gets excellent kudos from various people in the fetish scene. Great. The real weirdoes like my work.

The review that followed was better.

“Quite interesting, and very powerful in a way, the stories in DEDICATED TO HER felt almost foreign at first because of their content. They are not for everyone, with their controlling, almost arrogant, women and violent sexual acts, but readers who enjoy Female Domination stories and tales of BDSM should find DEDICATED TO HER much to their taste.”
The following reviews spoke along the same vein with praise of my characters, stories and content. While none of the reviews stated my CD was a masterpiece of carnal delight or a sensually satisfying read; they were still considerably more favorable than I had expected.

Writing for the BDSM genre in particular is difficult because you truly have to impress editors. So much of the genre is filled with the same scene reports, beatings and typical acts that it has become boring. This is true of many other genres, not solely erotica alone.

When I asked a group of readers traditionally not associated with hardcore BDSM fiction to review my work it was a risk I'm glad I took. The reviews could have all come back negatively, showing that I failed in my attempt to blend the romance and BDSM genres. Instead, they gave me a chance to see that for some of the reviewers, the humanity I try to portray in my fiction came across.

Recently in a column for the Erotica Readers and Writers Association, M. Christian talked about the importance of stressing one’s creative muscles by writing for a different genre. My first nonfiction attempts led me to write how-to articles for the craft of writing in general. Eventually, ssspread.com approached me with the idea of my own nonfiction column. After negotiations, this will add another notch on the bedpost of writing credits.

The underlying point was that I took a risk. Writing in general is a risk because much of it is subject to interpretation. It’s always going to be put under scrutiny by others and that’s partially what drives us as authors. To step outside the lines of established genres and take that leap into bigger, uncharted territories. That’s what breaking out of traditionally established boundaries for different genres does for us.

Your readers vary - each has individual tastes - so why shouldn’t your writing?

The Big "Oh!" – The Sex Issue

Well, we don’t need to tell you what we want for this issue – we’re sure you’ve got lots of ideas of your own! From the "Clitoral Truth" to the "Joy of Sex," this issue will explore all that is sexual, sensual and sinful! But just in case you're wondering, here's what might turn us on for this issue: Pieces that explore sex in new, exciting, interesting ways. Don't send us the "yes, it's okay for women to enjoy sex" piece -- we know that already. We want to know HOW and WHY women enjoy (or don't enjoy) sex. We want features that explore alternative sexual realities, columns that teach us how to go to our first swingers event, essays that make us laugh at our own sexual foibles. Our wants and needs run the gamut from poems that make us wish we were reading the magazine in bed instead of on the bus, to well-researched articles that explore social sexuality (examples: how and why women choose abstinence or promiscuity; whether we spend so much time trying to "appear sexual" that we don't have any time for the actual act; is sex ed really working?).

Best of all, we are now able to pay our writers. It's just a small amount (anywhere from $5 - $100 depending on the complexity and length of the piece), but we're glad to be able to say thank you for your hard work!

Frog: A Tale of Sexual Torture and Degradation
By Claire Thompson
2002 - Renaissance E Books
http://www.renebooks.com
ISBN# 1-58873-125-1

Over the last couple of years, I have had the pleasure of reading this author’s work on a regular basis. I have found her characters to be intriguing and evolving individuals in novels where graphic sex was secondary to other themes and issues. Always before, I have found the books to be erotic even if some of the particular practices in them were not of interest to me. While the characters are interesting and evolving in this novel, the title pretty much says it all. This, in my humble opinion, is not an erotic novel at all.

Instead, it is a tale of what two human beings will do to someone that they see as nothing more than a toy, or frog if you will, for their amusement. They do not see Jane as a human being but instead something to vent their twisted desires and inflict pain on. From the moment Jane unwittingly strays into their trap, frightening in its simplicity, this novel takes a dark and deep turn into pain and torture. The resultant sex between the kidnappers and Jane is just a small part of what they have in mind for her and is clearly secondary to their primary interest of pain and torture.

The kidnappers are a married couple, Brenda and Robert. Jane isn’t their first victim and when they are done with her, she will be disposed of and a new victim will be selected. Brenda likes the planning and acquisition of the target victim. The selection of the person, the stalking, the grab and the escape are what drive her. Once she has the victim, she also loves to play mind games.

“Jane didn’t move and Brenda was concerned for a second that they’d overdone it for her first day. It didn’t do to scare them so bad they lost their minds. More fun to keep them lucid; aware of what was happening to them. For Brenda it wasn’t just about physical thrills. She liked to take a person and slowly break them down. Take an independent functioning adult and reduce them to a docile, totally submissive and obedient slave. Robert could use her, but ultimately it was Brenda who would own her.”
As the novel works forward, the reader learns that behind the façade, Brenda’s issues are more about power and jealousy and that her attempts to manipulate can and do go wrong at times. At the same time, Robert’s desires are more base. He likes the sexual freedom his wife provides of herself as well as their victims and enjoys the thrill of sexually breaking a woman.

“Robert was excited and happy with their newest acquisition. She was young and terrified and probably not very experienced sexually. He would have the privilege of breaking her in to all sorts of nasty and exciting practices. He would turn her from cold frigid bitch to wanton sex slave. He would teach her not to just submit sexually, but to crave it, to live for it. And despite his very selfish use of their toys, Robert was in fact quite attuned to what drove women wild. He knew how to take them to the edge and pull them back, and then push them closer, closer, controlling their experience until her finally let them go, pushing them toward their own little deaths, leaving them completely spent and, in his mind, properly used.”

While both Brenda and Robert work their depraved attentions on Jane, they are unable to completely break her. Slowly, Jane finds in herself an inner strength that she did not know she had and begins to plot an escape. The repeated sexual torture and humiliation only serves to encourage the beginnings of a newly found inner strength to not only beat them by escaping but to get painfully even with the depraved couple.

Eroticism is a far secondary theme in this novel. Pain, humiliation and the inner spirit of a victim are the main themes. Well written as always, the author has brought another tale of the evolvement of a person on the fringes of society that no one missed. Far more so than in any of her other books, the author has provided a glimpse into the abyss and which was madness lies.

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $5-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
