Hope y'all made it through Halloween in one piece. We did, even though I was busy sewing and hemming two crushed velvet cloaks right up until the very minute we walked out the door to go trick or treating. Next year I swear I'll get started earlier, but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy all the candy that we didn't give away... I have a couple of cool announcements this issue... First of all, sex-writing has finally hit the big time! Writer's Digest published my Market Spotlight on sex markets and it should be hitting the stands any day now. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out and I'm glad to see these markets legitimized in WD's pages. And welcome to you new WD subscribers! Second, since so many of you have asked for more info on market listings (similar to the old Porn and Erotica Market Report, for those of you who have been around for awhile) I finally put together a site - Sex-Writer.com. I'm really psyched about it and was hoping to have it done by this issue but alas; it, like every other web project I take on, is taking longer than I expected. But I will have it ready by the next issue or sooner, promise! It's a pay site that will feature appx. 125-150 detailed markets and their needs, along with articles on writing and selling erotica and Q & A's with writers and editors. You can take a look at the prototype here: http://www.katyterrega.com/sw/swindex.html. Please feel free to give me your feedback, along with suggestions of what you'd like to see included... (And yes, for those of you reading this online, I know, that is a particularly gaudy Sex-Writer.com button on the left there, but I'm working on a better one...) As far as the newsletter goes, we've got an especially good issue for you today. Adrian Hunter (whose books have been favorably reviewed many times in this column) talks about fetish writing, we've got several good markets for you and I talk about breaking into non-fiction in Q and A. As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch! Katy

If your creative process has a headache, maybe it's time to try a new position. Instead of pulling out that dog-eared copy of the Kama Sutra, why not dive headfirst into your favorite fetish? Stop blushing. Of course you have one. Everybody does. Whether it's something sweet like lace panties, or a fancier fancy like "studded black leather thongs with silver buckles on the side," it's not unusual for humans to indulge in specific sexual preferences to kickstart their lagging libidos. More importantly, many people turn to erotica to satiate their non-missionary longings, especially when acting them out verges on improbable (being kidnapped by aliens), if not impossible (add favorite rape scenario). This demand is often filled by amateurs who transcribe their fantasies and call them stories, posting their misspelled missives on cheesy web sites that nevertheless attract hordes of salivating surfers. The fetish fiction market is begging (literally, in the case of my specialty, BDSM) for professional intervention. What's not to like about an appreciative marketplace with thousands of outlets in print and on the Internet? First and foremost, it's important to choose a fetish that works for you. Even if you don't indulge personally, you need a degree of affinity for the chosen sport to write about it convincingly. Whatever you do, don't make fun of the fetish. If you don't "get" why someone has a thing for feet, choose another topic instead of forcing yourself to write about the delicate curve of her buffed toenails. You'll hate yourself in the morning, and more importantly, you'll insult your target audience, which only works if you're Rodney Dangerfield, who doesn't seem to get laid a lot. Not all fetishes involve yards of purple latex, seven-inch stiletto heels and iron posture collars. Some can be quite harmless, if not borderline ingenuous. For example, I have a friend who does quite well writing stories about forced nudity, in which principal characters are compelled to spend large amounts of plot without the benefit of clothing. This can be as simple as a friendly game of strip poker, or as complicated as the aforementioned alien abduction. In the latter case, you even get to pitch the story to two different markets, always a plus for pornography. Combining multiple fetishes is a great way to get extra mileage out of a story, or simply add seasoning to a more traditional tail tale. Dress one of the participants in a three-way scene in rubber gloves and stockings. Spend some extra time describing a shapely gam using the terminology preferred by leg fetishists. Give a character extra-large breasts or shaved genitals. Or take it a step further by making her a BBW (big beautiful woman) or a TV (transvestite). Speaking of encrypted vocabulary, it's critical to research your chosen fetish genre extensively before opening a new document in your word processor. Visit web sites, buy magazines and read stories until you get a real feel for the lingo and jargon. Usenet newsgroups catering to specific hankerings can be a rich lode to mine, but don't post queries asking for pointers unless you're in the mood to be flamed as a clueless poseur. It's much more effective to lurk and learn, and don't forget to follow the links in the signatures of the posting participants…personal home pages are detailed blueprints for the owner's deepest desires. While you're touring the more sensational side of sex, remember that lots of people fantasize about adult entertainment in locations not generally known as alternative bedrooms. Medical locations like hospitals and especially the dentist's office offer myriad extensions for the aspiring author, including specific costumes (nurse uniforms), accessories (rubber gloves) and specialized equipment (speculums and stirrups). And who knows what really occurs in the tour bus of those decadent rock stars? If all this talk about unusual procreation makes you squeamish, try incorporating a relatively benign fetish into your stories. For example, women who smoke cigarettes send many men over the moon in the swoon department, especially when the characters make a second career out of the process by indulging in decadent brands like Gaulois or Shermans, solid-gold cases, antique Zippo lighters and especially those long, elegant cigarette holders, preferably with ivory inlays and maybe a brass tip…you get the idea. Lingerie also scores high in this category, and probably won't embarrass you or your regular readers (unless your male characters wear bras and corsets, but that's a topic worth exploring, too). Fetishes can be supremely silly to non-believers (like adult infantalization, or "furry" adventures that feature animals with human characteristics), but close-minded opinions don't make these specialties any less viable as erotica story subjects. The important thing to remember is that someone out there really, really gets off on the idea, and craves anything that idealizes the process into something approaching art. And if it helps get your rutting out of a rut, why not give your favorite a whirl? You have nothing to lose but your inhibitions, plus a few easy sales. *** Adrian Hunter began posting his fiction on the Internet in 1993. Four years later, he compiled his stories on a web site, AdrianHunter.com, which has attracted more than a million visitors. In 2000, he was the recipient of the "Best Bondage Writer" award from SIGNY. He has published two anthologies of his short stories, Crash Your Party Dress and Something Just Clicked, as well as a full-length novel, Once Bitten, with co-author Chelsea Shepard. --- BLASPHEMY: Edited by Kailleaugh Andersson & Paul Fry Unpublished fiction only. 7000 words max. Erotic horror stories with a lot of religious inspiration. No priest and child abuse themes whatsoever. We would like a group of stories that while they share the same theme, differ from each other in the story department in such a way that all the stories don't seem to be the same story being re-told again and again. We don't want the constant religious imagery of just the Catholic church since there are a large number of churches out there who have their own individual rites and ideas that differ from each other. With that ideal, we'd like to see a group of stories that involve different religions, different countries and different times. The one thing we want to stay away from is the constant re-telling of the 15th century Catholic Inquisition era. We would like bold and different stories. Stories that shock us and make us think. They must be well written and keep us hooked from the beginning. They must be erotic, not just sex stories please. We believe that stories don't have to include graphic sex scenes and the usual sexual profanity to be erotic. Just the suggestion of sex can be more erotic than the actual sex act itself -- if it's written correctly. E-mail submissions only. Please include your name, snail mail address and e-mail address on the first page of your manuscript. Save it as a Rich Text Format document (rtf) and e-mail it to anthosubs@sstpublications.co.uk. The subject line should read: Religious Erotica Anthology. The submission deadline is the 30th of November 2002. Contributors' Payment: One contributors' copy and a share of the profits. 50% of the profits will be split between the contributors, leaving the remaining 50% for the publishers and editors + copy.

E-mail: GilaQueen@att.net. =========================================== If you already have a background in non-fiction, it should be relatively easy to break into porn non-fiction. As long as you have a few decent clips, go ahead and study your intended markets, find those that might be interested in what you have to say and query the same as you would for the more mainstream markets. But if not, if you're relatively new to either writing in general, or non-fiction writing in particular, pretty much the only way you'll be able to break into the article market is by first writing fiction, either letters or full-length stories. You usually need to write for and sell to a market a time or two (or three or more) before they'll be willing to take a chance on a non-fiction idea. But it's definitely worth it to do the work, you'll open up a lot of new markets for yourself this way. Depending on how much work you want to put into it, you can also can just send out an unsolictied article manuscript to a market. If it's a good piece, and if the magazine hasn't run one like it, and if fits all their specs, you just might sell it. That's a lots of "ifs" but if you've got good, creative ideas and are a decent writer, it might be worth your time. --- Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)
