Happy almost-Halloween, everyone!

Once again, my family has procrastinated 'till the bitter end and now we have 4 days to get decorations up, sew a cloak for my daughter - who at 12 is going as a Druid! - figure out a costume for my son and carve the pumpkins (of which we have 5 or 6 great home-grown ones to choose from.)

Well, at least the kids are off for fall break so we'll have extra time.

As far as the Fall short story contest goes, we haven't yet received enough
entrants. :( We did get 2 or 3, but since the winner gets $25, we'll need several more. I'll extend the deadline two more weeks, so get your orders in if you still want to enter!

Take a look at the rules and regulations here and take a look at some of our past winners here. Then send us your best!

We've got a good issue for you today. Another stellar column from CB Potts, some great market listings and some good Goings On.

And, as usual, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch!

Katy

--- What I Didn't Know ---
--- Musings By CB Potts ---
===========================================

Dress You Up In My Love

Every now and then, even the most dedicated porn writer gets tired of writing about naked people. Let’s face it, when you get down to brass tacks, everyone has the same basic anatomy. There are only so many ways to describe appendages, features, and skin tones. After a hundred stories or so, it gets a little boring.

What’s a writer to do? Boredom or no, there are still deadlines to meet. You don’t want to risk any friendly editors forgetting who you are during long periods of inactivity. It’s imperative to keep writing, to keep your work in circulation.

Some writers speak of having "idea closets", a repository of fragmentary stories for when the inspirational well runs dry. The porn writers idea closet is always full – of fetish clothing! For me, it’s a never fail technique -- just take out some "normal’ characters and let them play dress up.

Think of the opportunities: Instead of searching for an analogy for washboard stomach yet again, you can spin your creative wheels outlining how Stud Muffin X slowly unbuttoned the brass buttons of his navy blazer, allowing only the quickest peek at the button down Oxford shirt hiding below...

What’s that? That doesn’t sound erotic? You don’t care about the intricacies of camouflage uniforms or tight pink latex corsets? Trust me – somebody does! There are literally thousands of different fetishes based on apparel. There’s not room to go into them all here – although that would make a really neat anthology idea, if any publishers are listening :) – so I’ll just hit some of the high points.

Uniforms are really big – one Internet search alone yielded over 3,000 sites devoted to sexy fiends in military, police, and even bus driver uniforms. After this little bit of research, I’ll never be able to look at the UPS man the same way again! The majority of these sites appeared to be dedicated to gay men, although I found a few lesbian sites and one web page with nothing but pictures and stories about women dressed in men’s uniforms, apparently targeted at heterosexual readers.

There’s a nifty little sub-sect of this fetish, devoted to women in nurse’s uniforms. Stories are targeted toward straight men, who usually are the narrators of these medical misadventures. The nurses, tall and buxom to the last white cap, all displayed dominant characteristics. This can be a simple caretaking dominance fantasy, while an injured man lays in bed, passively allowing his sexual needs to be met, or more psychological role-playing, where a submissive male reports to a nurse for some sort of "treatment", usually involving compulsive masturbating and anal exams.

Speaking of dominance, no explanation of fetish clothing would be complete without mentioning the regalia associated with S&M/B&D. Erotic stories in this genre can continue for pages describing leathers, boots, and a whole plethora of nifty little straps. There’s also items like hobble skirts, which fit so tightly around the legs any one wearing them would have great difficulty walking, gloves designed to bind the hands and elbows together behind the back, and other fun-time accessories.

There are sites devoted to erotic versions of Disney costumes – but if you figure Snow White was living with seven little men, I guess that’s not surprising. A word of caution that producing porn using licensed characters is almost a guaranteed way to get sued – especially if you’re making good money with it. Some attractions will never be allowed in the Magic Kingdom.

For those writers who produce historical erotica, the gypsy fetish wear sites would be a great resource. Additionally, try searching under costuming, and you’ll be rewarded with more images than you can shake a stick at. Use the details you glean here to add a new layer of depth and realism to your stories.

I’m sure there are writers who produce all of their works within the confines of one fetish. Some predilections, like dressing in furry animal costumes, don’t lend well to crossover techniques. However, the majority of writers could benefit from adding a little spice from the fetish clothing closet. What happens when your normal aggressive but conservative butchy heroine discovers the joy of wearing her leather jacket – and nothing else? Is your lonely gay boy interested in the mailman’s uniform – or the package he’s carrying?

An additional benefit to this approach is it doubles the potential markets for any story. It can sell once to the mainstream market, and then again as a fetish work. For example, a tale about a corset-wearing heroine can be sold as regular porn, and then with slightly different emphasis, reworked to appeal to the corsetry market. Some mainstream mags buy tales with "heavy’ fetish elements – Penthouse Variations springs to mind—but the majority prefer fetish to provide the spice and not the main course. This allows you to "double the fun"! Enjoy.

If you wish to withdraw your submission, please let me know by sending an e-mail to kristina@epiphanymag.com.

I am also looking for editors for Epiphany as well. For more information, please contact me at kristina@epiphanymag.com.

If, after reading our guidelines, you decide to submit to us, please do so in one of the two ways below. You must adhere to the guidelines below or your work WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

What are we looking for?

Artwork
If you are interested in submitting artwork, please contact Kristina Kennedy at kristina@epiphanymag.com

Articles
Length: 500-1200 words, however, please do not struggle with reaching this length. We are more interested in content. Articles should be informative yet fun, and we like to keep things intimate, so please no sermon-like articles.

How-to Articles:
We are a magazine for writers, so we need articles that relate to writing. "How-to Write" articles are of special interest to us, but we are also interested in articles about writing/publishing experiences. Some sample topics are:

screenwriting format
writing a query letter
researching a topic

Technique Articles:
Technique articles refer to articles written about specific writing practices such as

using dialogue to define character
the use of time in the course of a story
the proper use of suspense

These articles should be written and submitted by only those writers who have sufficient knowledge in the area in which they write. In order to make these articles effective, please be sure to point out the following:

recent usage of the technique in mainstream media
significance
definition of the technique etc.

Book/Market Reviews
Length: 750 words

Book Reviews
To begin, be sure to include the Title, Author, Publisher, Genre, Age Group. A book review should give a general plot summary without retelling the story. After that you need to explore the good AND bad aspects of the writing. Try asking yourself these questions:

Did the writing hold your interest? What about it made you want to continue/stop reading? Explore the use of different techniques.

What would you have done differently? Would you have used less complicated language? Less flash backs? etc.

In comparison to other works of the same author/genre, how does this rate?

Your job is to critique the story not just as a reader but as a writer too.

Market Reviews
Generally speaking, these types of reviews tend to cover the changing trends in the writing industry. Please try to keep these articles up-to-date with the CURRENT trends.

Creative Writing
Poetry
We are looking for poetry that demonstrates the beauty of the written word, and therefore we are interested in poetry that is 20 lines or longer (max 500 words). Please no sappy, greeting-card type poetry. Only original pieces will be accepted.

Short Stories
Length: 8,000 Words (any thing longer may be used in serial form)

We do not accept any Fan Fiction ex. stories based on Star Wars, X-Files or other copyrighted ideas. We are looking for (not in this order):
Mystery/Suspense
Tasteful Erotica focusing on the art of the chase, the first time, realization of sexuality
Science Fiction
Personal Essays
Romance Stories
General Stories
Serial Fiction/Screenplays/Stage Plays

Must be completed works. If you send fiction it would help if there were clearly marked sections where you think the story can be stopped.

How/Where to Send Your Work: Email
Attach a Raw Text File (.txt file) virus checked document to an email and forward it to the appropriate address below. If you do not know how to create a .txt file, please email us at help@epiphanymag.com for instructions. PLEASE DO NOT SEND HTML CODED PAGES. If you have a PERSONAL WEB PAGE and your work is posted there, send an email with the link to the page and the title of the work. Submissions sent without contact information (email address and name) will not be read.

DO NOT SEND ANY WORK, EVEN POEMS, IN THE BODY OF YOUR EMAIL. IF YOU DO IT WILL NOT BE READ.

Send all submissions to appropriate address below:

All Short Stories and Personal Essays - fiction@epiphanymag.com

Longer Serial Pieces - serials@epiphanymag.com

Poetic Verse - poetry@epiphanymag.com

All Non-Creative Writing i.e. Book Reviews articles@epiphanymag.com

Please put title, genre, and type of work submitted in the Subject. Failure to do so will result in your submission being deleted.

Burning Angel

Burning Angel Is Seeking Creative and Intelligent Freelance Writers for Adult Website

Description:
I am looking for intelligent and creative male and female writers, interested in contributing erotic fiction to a progressive amateur porn-site. I'm looking for sexy, humorous, and well- written titillating stories to improve the literary content. If you're not a fiction writer, I'm also looking for people to contribute thought provoking articles concerning the politics of pornography, ie, the artistic merit or lack of in the projected images, issues dealing with feminism, etc.

Please do not answer to this add unless you are a dedicated writer who feels they can help me raise the bar on pornography. I am looking for people who can offer me more then the typical 'I caressed her milky white breasts,` or 'stroked his hard bulging cock` garbage found all over the net.

Rather then send a resume, and then have me write you back to tell you if you are 'hired,` send me a 1-4 page erotic story you'd like to have published on my website, www.BurningAngel.com. Along with the story, send a brief and informal cover letter, telling me a bit about yourself, why you want to do this, what kinds of books you like to read, and what previous writing experience you've had. After I read your story (and I promise, I will read all the submissions) I will contact you to tell you if I liked what I read. If I accept the piece, then you will receive a small payment of $10 a story, a rate I promise to increase as the website gains more popularity, and I thus have more money to give. You can publish the story under whatever name you want, and yes, you can send me material that has been published elsewhere.

If you are interested in writing nonfiction, email me with a proposed idea you'd like to write about.

Burning Angel is a fairly new online publication I am looking to expand, so I really need some open minds who would like to help. Look at www.BurningAngel.com and get a basic idea of what my business is about. If you're interested in contributing, contact me at Joanna@Burningangel.net.

Thanks!

--- Looking For Writers ---

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
