From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================================

As I type this I'm looking out at the gorgeous locusts and maples in my neighbor's front yard, which are still yellow and orange although they're fading fast. Have I mentioned that fall is my least favorite season? I mean, sure it's gorgeous, but only for awhile. Soon the beautiful landscape (here in Colorado, anyway) fades away into dull, boring grays and browns. Blah! You know how some people feel light deprived in the winter? I feel color deprived. And then, of course, there's the bitter cold and the snow, let's not even go there...

Oh well, I feel this way every year and every year I manage to get over it and survive till the next glorious spring. I imagine this year will be no different ;)

But on to happier subjects...

In this issue we've got a re-run of one of our early articles, Two-Way Street, by long-time reader Cynthia MacGregor plus a book review by Kevin Tipple. We've also got some good market listings and info on both the 51st Email Contest and the Fall Short Story Contest.

I'd like to remind everybody that I'm always looking for articles to run in the newsletter, so if you have something writing-related to share, give me a holler. Scroll down to the Looking For Writers section for more info.

I'd also like to thank those who have donated $5 to the cause! It takes a fair amount of money (and time) to put this rag out, as well as to pay our contributors (even if it is a pittance) so I sure appreciate your support. You can see who has subscribed on our Supporter's Page at http://www.katyterrega.com/supporters.html. (If you've subscribed but don't see your name there, just let me know!) And you can help support this newsletter and order your voluntary subscription by going to the Order Page at http://www.katyterrega.com/writersorderform.html

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch!

Finally, a winner of the 51st Email Contest!

Congrats to Chelle, one of our faithful readers, who won a copy of "It's A Dirty Job" for being in the right place at the right time ;)

--- Fall 2002 Short Story Contest! ---
===========================================

And now for a more difficult contest, albeit still a fun one...

Yup, it's time for the Fall Shorty Story Contest! Sharpen those pencils and dredge up those fantasies because we're looking for the perfect porn story; a fair amount of plot, great characters and, of course, some sex. You can win e-books, cash and

***** Fame and Fortune! *****
(or at least a coupla bucks and your story in print)
on the Winner's Page!

Some of you might remember that at first we didn't have enough entries for last Summer's contest, but then we managed to get enough to include several winners. I'm hoping we'll be able to do the same thing this time.

Take a look at the rules and regulations here and take a look at some of our past winners here. Then send us your best!

Deadline is October 27th

Forbidden Lovers Caught In a Web of Lies, Sex and Deceit
By Janice Kyle
2002 - Trafford Publishing - www.trafford.com - ISBN# 155369389-2
Large Trade Paperback

What many authors don’t seem to be aware of today is that the author should not have to pay up front to publish a book. Even if one does not get an advance, expenses are supposed to come out of royalties, which are paid based on sales. However, many authors end up going the Print on Demand route to get their book on the market while not realizing that they are paying for the privilege. Not only are they paying financially for the privilege but they are also paying in costs to their careers when a poorly edited book bearing their name comes out. Unfortunately that is the case with this novel.

While the underlying story had great potential, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. As the novel opens, Carmen Hailey, owner and operator of Boshae’ Boutique is sorely in need of a vacation and decides to embark on a trip marketed as “A Weekend Getaway to Colorado Springs.” We know this because of the following excerpt from the second paragraph of the novel, quoted here exactly as written in my review copy:

She immediately contacted her Travel Agency to make travel arrangements. She exhaled, ‘YEEEEES,” the 7:00 A. M flight Saturday morning will be perfect! But, I will prefer a late evening flight on Sunday. Okay Ms. Hailey, I will check to see what’s available. Ms. Hailey, there is a flight arriving in Seattle at 5:40 P. M. She moaned, “hmmmmmmmmmm, is there a flight returning much later?’ Sure, Ms. Hailey! There’s a flight arriving at 2:00 A. Monday morning. Okay, the 2:00 A. M. return flight will be great! She thanked, the Travel Agent and dashed upstairs to pack. She responded, Let’s see! I will only be gone for the weekend, so there’s no need to overly pack.” She proudly smiled. This will be the best weekend I have had in an awfully long time.

The rest of the paragraph continues in the same format, style and with the same mistakes for several more sentences. At this point, I had read two paragraphs and was very concerned about the quality of the work. This was especially true because I have corresponded with the author several times via e-mail and I wanted to like this book.

Moving forward in the book, Carmen meets a man at the airport who almost instantly arouses her and then discovers to her pleasure after he boards the plane that they are both going on the getaway trip. His name is Jack and he feels the same way about her and within a matter of paragraphs they have arrived, kissed each other in the rental car and wound up in a hotel room.

What follows is their first erotic encounter, which while quite detailed is unintentionally hilarious for the reader. Sentence after sentence has words such as "cuming" spelled out for emphasis, which should be done only in rare cases. For example, one sentence reads,

She whispered, “Jack, I’m CUUUUMMMMMMMMIIIIIINNNGGGG, AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH , Jack, who is Carmen?”

Beyond the fact that the character never has to gasp for breath or come up for air, sentences written that way for page after page become a bit hard to take, especially when the sentence does not make sense. Supposedly it is part of a telephone call to his wife but it is so poorly written it is hard to tell. Beyond the orgasm part—I got that loud and clear. But, if Carmen is with Jack, why would Carmen ask "who is Carmen" unless it is some weird Bob Dole comment variation?

Ignoring that issue, Carmen is not at all happy about Jack being married (unhappily, of course) but she is incredibly attracted to him. The fact that according to her, he is a stallion does not hurt things either. Soon they are back at it.

She strongly moaned, “Jack, your tongue feels so GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDD.”

And so on for the rest of the weekend.

But the fun in Colorado Springs follows her back home to Seattle. Soon she finds herself in the midst of an affair with a married man while lying to herself, the other man in her life, and others. The problem with this is that once they are started they have a way of compounding and growing until the whole situation spins out of control.

The problem for this book is while Janice Kyle has a good idea for a story, the idea was poorly executed. This is another case where the author apparently paid to be published when the money would have been better spent paying a good editor. This book needs editing from start to finish just to clear up basic conflicts in point of view, sentence structure, grammar and the like. These problems run far beyond the questionable spelling substitution for a woman’s genitalia used at the author’s discretion. These problems run throughout the book from start to finish and therefore make it a difficult book to read.

While this is a first novel and some allowances should be made, problems noted above are glaring issues that have to be fixed by anyone serious about writing as a career. A story idea, no matter how wonderful, that is poorly executed in the basics will doom an author’s career faster than slow sales. The publishing company in this case may not care since they got their money upfront (per their own website) and do not necessarily rely on book sales, but a serious author must care. Based on my e-mail conversations with the author, I do not think that the low quality presentation of her work accurately reflects her commitment to writing or her skill level. It is my hope that in the future, she saves some money by seeking a good editor through a reputable publishing house or, if that is not available, payment to a qualified editor that will assist her in publishing a more marketable book.

===========================================
--- Two-Way Street ---
--- By Cynthia MacGregor ---
===========================================

Over the years, I've read a plethora of articles that stress the etiquette of manuscript submission. To see these writings in various publications, one would think that the majority of writers are abysmally ignorant when it comes to the basic requirements. Can there really be that many writers who still fail to include SASE or who (gasp!) type on both sides of the paper?

What I think we need is a manuscript etiquette-guide for editors. It's a two-way street, folks, and we writers aren't the only guilty parties around here. Recently, as I dabbed correction fluid on the top page of a returned manuscript over an editor's thumbprint (was he trying to prove he had read the article before rejecting it?), my brain began compiling a list of editors' etiquette offenses.

Why doesn't someone write an article for editors, pointing out some Thou Shalt Nots? I'll give you a head start-herewith my list of Pet Peeves concerning editors:

o Editors who are starting a paper clip collection at my expense. I faithfully clip the article together; the editor just as faithfully swipes the clip before returning the article. (Note to self: Start stapling manuscripts.)

o Editors who shuffle pages before returning a manuscript. (Are they practicing for a new career in Atlantic City or Vegas, in case the next wave of layoffs includes them, or are they merely trying to prove that they really did read the manuscript before returning it?)

o Editors who bend corners on pages throughout a manuscript. (Are they marking the places at which they left off reading each time they came out of the bathroom?)

o Editors who scribble phone numbers, dental appointments, and other notes and memos ("Linda wcb," "Galleys Tues!" "butr egs cfe pk chops brd") on the front page of a manuscript they later return. (I bet the editor who scribbled "J preg? Div?" could write a sizzling novel based on real life!)

o Editors so interested in saving their company money that, in passing along a manuscript to another editor at the same company, they eschew Post-Its and write notes directly on the front page of the manuscript. ("P - Too offbeat for our readers. What about yours? - L")

o Editors who are furniture-lovers. Not for them to get coffee rings on their desks! No, they have a supply of handy oversized coasters-commonly known as the slush pile. (For years I bemoaned the fact that my manuscripts, to judge from the length of time it took to get them back, must always wind up buried at the bottom of the Everest of all slush piles. But lately I've obviously attained a priority position. From the coffee rings I've been viewing lately, it's obvious that my manuscripts do finally reach the top of the pile-always right at coffee-break.)

o Editors who return manuscripts with one page missing. (Keeping the one page they liked?)

o Editors who edit an entire manuscript before deciding, for one reason or another, that they can't use it. (Maybe they think that if I send it back out already edited I'll have a better chance of selling it, since the work's already been done?!)

Hey, c'mon, you editors-play fair. You want simple etiquette from us writers? OK, but remember, it's a two-way street. How about a little edit-quette from you?

---

Cynthia MacGregor, a freelance writer and editor, has well over 40 published books to her credit and several more scheduled for forthcoming publication. The South Florida resident hails originally from New York but loves the warm weather and wouldn't go back, "not even for free tickets for every show on Broadway." Cynthia's hobbies are writing haiku ("a Japanese form of poetry--in English, of course!") and cooking ("one of my forthcoming books is a cookbook--how great to turn a hobby into a moneymaker--and how fun!"). Cynthia teaches an evening writing course for adults, as well as a public speaking course, at a local high school, where she has also taught cooking courses. An inveterate punster, she so loves wordplay that each May she travels to Austin TX to participate in the annual O. Henry World Championship Pun-Offs, where one year she took 2nd place in the "High Lies and Low Puns" event. She says, "There's no one in the world I'd want to trade lives with." Elegant Erotica:

Stacy Strunk, Editor of Elegant Erotica, Inc. - http://www.elegant-erotica.com - writes...

I’m starting a Web content boutique and would like other writers to join me. The site is dedicated to serialized adult fiction – both on-going serials and serialized novels.

Full submission guidelines are available by sending an e-mail to stories@elegant-erotica.com. But here’s a condensed version of the guidelines:

We will look at adult fiction in any genre: sci-fi, historical romance, hard-boiled, you name it. We want strong plots, intriguing characters and hot, graphic sex scenes. Elegant Erotica is dedicated to marketing written works, as opposed to editing or publishing. This means, we expect work that is well written and well edited.

To query: send a letter introducing yourself, your characters and the basic premise of your story. Include the first chapter or first segment of your story. Keep your total mailing under ten pages. This will allow you to use a standard #10 business size envelope and avoid additional mailing charges. Include an SASE if you want your materials returned.

Mail to:
Elegant Erotica, Inc.
Attn: Editor
PO Box 4976
Aurora, IL 60507

You can also e-mail your query to: editor@elegant-erotica.com. We will only accept the following e-mail attachments: .txt (ascii), .doc (wpd) and .pdf. Remember to include your contact information in the e-mail.

Money derived from the sales of novel rights will be split 85% to the author and 15% to Elegant Erotica. Money from the sales of on-going serials will be split 80% to the author and 20% to Elegant Erotica. (We're taking a substantially larger risk with on-going serials, because we offer a discounted one-year subscription rate.) Merchant fees come from our share.

You set the price of the work, I’m aiming for roughly the $10 range for most, but look at the site to see how it’s set up.

We plan to earn our share of the proceeds by actively marketing and advertising our site and the works of our authors. I will not outline our entire marketing plan for you, but it does include maintaining a mailing list of clients, paid and free advertising, press releases, the works. In essence, we will be working as content agents.

Each of our authors will also have a biography page. Authors can add a link to their home page, blog page or fan site. Each author with our site is also entitle to an elegant-erotica.com e-mail address, which they can access on-line, forward to their private e-mail account or access using an e-mail client such as Outlook or Eudora.

EroticSF.com
http://www.eroticsf.com/home.mgi

Writer's Guidelines:
EroticSF.com seeks well-written, engaging erotic stories of speculative fiction. We don't differentiate between science fiction and fantasy, nor its various sub-genres. The speculative element(s) must be a solid part of the story. If they can be removed and the story still works, then the piece isn't speculative fiction.

EroticSF.com is open to short stories up to 10,000 words. Stories may be published individually or in collections. We're especially looking for authors who will be avid in promoting their own work, both on the Internet and in the speculative fiction community at large. Remember, EroticSF pays in royalties, which means your story has to sell, and no one can promote their work like the author. Prospective writers are strongly encouraged to purchase a few of our titles to get a feel for exactly what EroticSF publishes.

EroticSF.com asks that work meets the following criteria:
The story is a work of speculative fiction.
The story must contain erotic content, and such content arises out of the characters and/or their situation, not because the story must have sex.
The story be the author's own work.

Please be aware that the author may fall into certain plots that have been done to death and beyond as "erotic" speculative fiction.

EroticSF.com purchases world-wide electronic rights and for the privledge will pay a 25% royalty on all sales. We do not purchase print rights, which leaves the author free to sell his or her work in the print markets. We do, however, prefer to have original works of fiction. Those previously published will have a reduced royalty rate.

Writers may also find it helpful to visit our Mailing Lists and subscribe to the Writing Info and Crit lists to get a feel for editorial guidelines. Lady Mary takes an active role in these lists and would be happy to answer any questions.

To submit please send your story as ASCII text or cut and paste into an e-mail and send to editor@EroticSF.com. A subject line of SUBMISSION or SUB: and TITLE would be most helpful. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES MAY RESULT IN YOUR WORK BEING IMMEDIATELY REJECTED.

Current Needs:
We would like to see more high fantasy stories, as well as stories that encompass all orientations. We also would like to see flash fiction (100 words or less) to be used in our Freebies area. Given that we will not be able to pay for flash fiction, links to your website and/or business, as well as an email link will be provided.

Questions may also be e-mailed to editor@EroticSF.com.

---

Lady Mary writes:
The EroticSF.com anthologies will still be accepting submissions ongoing. Please check the anthology page for current topics. This page will be updated as given topics become full and new ones are added.

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
