Hello all ;) I got an email from a reader who mentioned that he hadn't received the newsletter in awhile and asked if it was on hiatus. Hmmm... After a bit of thought, I decided that that was as good a reason as any for why I haven't put out a new issue in 6 or so weeks. Hiatus...yes, indeedy, I like that word. "A gap or interruption in space, time or continuity; a break." Not planned, necessarily, nor welcome, but a hiatus nonetheless. But now it's back, and hopefully we're also back to the regular bi-weekly grind starting with this issue. Thanks for your patience ;) I'd blame it on our recent blizzard if I could, what with those 30 inches of snow and my husband stuck at work for three days and the kids and I alternating between sledding, digging out and video games. (Well, okay, I didn't go sledding and I didn't play video games but I did dig out, repeatedly.) It was the second biggest snow storm in Denver history, and much bigger than the last two big ones, in '82 and '97. Luckily, we were prepared and had power and plenty of food and firewood, but we didn't get the car dug out till the fourth day and we've still (after many 50 and 60 degree days) got piles of snow in the yard and street. My kids were troopers; my daughter spent an hour or so digging the firewood out from under a foot or two of snow and my son did his best to shovel snow that came to his waist. Of course, they couldn't complain too much, what with four whole snow days in a row! Hard to believe, especially here in snowy Colorado, but these were their first snow days ever and they took full advantage of them. As for the newsletter, we've got a packed issue for you today, including an article by Vinnie Tesla on whether or not you should publish your stories non-commercially, a column from C.B. Potts' on the art of "leather" writing (only in this newsletter, right?!) and a whole slew of market listings. In addition, check out Kathy Ptacek's offer of a free issue of the Gila Queen newsletter if you subscribe in April (after Market Listings (below) or on the sidebar if you're reading this online.) And, I'm much closer to that promised message board thanks to many readers' offers of help. I'll keep you posted...

You work hard on your stories--you put your soul and your sweat into them. Why should you show them for free? Don't you deserve to be compensated for your efforts? To answer that question, we have to ask a deeper one: Why do you write sex stories at all? It's unlikely you do it solely or primarily for the money. What money there is to be made in the field is sporadic; most of even the best and most popular sex writers still have day jobs. If you're writing stories, it's probably because you get satisfaction from the process of doing so. If you're submitting them for publication, you probably enjoy the thought of people reading and enjoying them. Noncommercial venues offer a broad readership, along with some distinctive advantages: freedom, feedback, and flexibility. FREEDOM: Noncommercial sites generally allow topics that are taboo on commercial ones. Apart from the enormous fanfiction community, which the copyright lawyers keep from any commercial distribution, a wide array of darker or more esoteric fetishes have avid followings on the noncommercial web and little or no space elsewhere. Freed from genre restrictions, strange stylistic hybrids flourish--romantic mind-control stories, supernatural tickling stories, hardboiled werewolf adventures. FEEDBACK: The noncommercial nature of the free web increases the sense of community spirit. With less of a psychological distinction between writers and readers, the amount of mail writers get goes up substantially. Though the fanmail is often rather brief ("Great stuff. Do more" is a typical message in my inbox), it's still gratifying to have visible reminders of an enthusiastic community of readers. FLEXIBILITY: By posting your stories to most noncommercial sites, you undertake no contractual obligations. The works are still your property to use as you will. Whether such posting counts as prior publication is debatable, but I advise you to mention any such posting in the cover letters for commercial submissions as a matter of courtesy. For a few of the most popular writers, there can be another advantage to posting noncommercial work for a while...FANS. Some writers have developed large fanbases, which have then been of use in subsequent endeavors. Mary Anne Mohranj's successful book, "Torn Shapes of Desire," consisted primarily of stories she had previously posted to alt.sex.stories. The paysite RuthiesClub.com was founded by four writers (and an editor) whose works had previously been wildly popular on ASSM. (full disclosure--my first commercial sale was a story I sold to them this summer) VENUES ASSTR.ORG: ASSTR.org (from "the Alt.Sex.Stories Text Repository") is a non-profit organization that administrates alt.sex.stories.moderated (often called ASSM). Their moderators perform no editing--they merely filter out spam, binary files, and discussion. All plain-text stories are accepted. In addition, their website, http://www.asstr.org/main.html, provides free hosting for any erotic author who wants to set one up. Go to http://www.asstr.org/accountinfo.html and fill out the form if you're interested in applying. For a reader, the worst thing about ASSTR is that it's an anarchy. Totally incompetent work nestles next to stories of exceptional literary and erotic value. Romance authors, erotic cannibalism authors, and wifeslut gangbang authors are all jumbled together with little to serve as maps or signposts to help you find your way. The best thing about ASSTR is that it's an anarchy. Without editorial pressure, every sort of creativity is allowed to bloom unrestricted, from the archly decadent literary gamesmanship of Nick Urfe (http://www.asstr.org/~nickurfe/) to the hilariously direct raunch of Tom Thumper (http://www.asstr.org/~thumperheaven/main.html). If you're willing to put in a little legwork exploring, the experience can be immensely rewarding. For the author, ASSTR has a couple other nifty features. Anonymous feedback forms help encourage shy readers to send fanmail. HTTP and FTP access means you can make an elaborate webpage if you like, or simply upload your plaintext files. The only downside to ASSTR websites is that the restriction on commercial content prohibits you from promoting any remunerative works of yours elsewhere. STORIESONLINE.NET AND LITEROTICA.COM The definition of noncommercial is slippery. Literotica.com is similar in many ways to Storiesonline, but is a profit-making venture. It has a similar voting setup to Storiesonline's, as well as a reader-feedback messageboard. It's a very well-promoted and popular site--according to the site statistics, their most popular story has been downloaded almost a million times. Personally, I can't stand the visual design, with bright colors, busy background images, and large animated banner ads, but I'm something of a design snob. Literotica is completely free to read and post, with the only content restriction being that it doesn't allow underage characters. SMALLER SITES Finally, there is the large array of non-paying edited websites, such as Clean Sheets, Scarletters, etc. Though these lack the total freedom of the unedited sites, they do often have some prestige attached to them, and generally offer nonexclusive contracts so that you are free to submit your work elsewhere. ===== BIO:

I am putting together a paysite for excellent hard-core porn. The stories on the site will be written by only the best writers, who can give as much attention to grammar as they can to very hot sex. I especially want submissions from writers interested in lesbianism, leather and BDSM, as well as other the other porn subgenres. Send submissions of one story only to holmes_iv@hotmail.com. I will acknowledge receipt by return e-mail. Rates will be worked out on an individual basis, depending on quality of story. --- Worldwide call for submissions for an anthology of historically based erotica edited by author/anthologist Mitzi Szereto. History is dull. Dry. A real yawn. At least some people think so. As editor, I hope to change this misconception by offering up a collection of erotic stories based in history. Real life historical events, or a fictionalised version of history, or simply a historical setting you decide. What did Napoleon and Josephine really get up to? Was Cleopatra as hot as everyone says? What went on backstage with the Bard and his actors? Were the Roaring Twenties really roaring? Okay, you get the picture. You ve got thousands of years to work with, so get cracking! Specifications: 1. Stories can be of any length, but generally no longer than 8,000 words.
Previously published material will be considered, providing you have the rights or can get the rights. (Indicate where and when published, plus rights status.) Submission requirements:

"The Wildest Ones: Hot Biker Tales" Since I know a lot of people who were planning on submitting to my new gay erotic anthology, The Wildest Ones: Hot Biker Tales, were feeling a bit cramped by the original deadline I've extended it to June 7th. Some folks have also been a bit intimidated by the theme, thinking they have to be both experts on bikers as well as bikers. Rest assured that I don't know a front fork from a silly bar either. What I'm interested in are stories that play more with the myth and fantasy of bikers rather than hyper-realistic mechanical or lifestyle details (though that's fine if you can do it). Stories can also be just about any kind of genre - as long as they have gay male erotic content and play with the outlaw biker theme: horror, fantasy, science fiction, humor, true-life and so forth. I'm especially interested in anything that stretches the idea of what a biker is or can be. Have fun, kick ass, and write a damned story! Here are the guidelines again:

By now he had taken my measure, and his lip curled with scorn as he realized I had, indeed, spoken truly – I pretended nothing.
Right there, you have everything important in erotic literature. Note that there is no mention of heaving breasts, thrusting cocks, or indeed, any other overly active body part. Instead, the focus is on the character’s mental process, without veering into the overly intellectual. It is easy for the reader to step into our heroine’s trembling shoes, imagining that aching combination of lust and fear. It is also easy for the reader to step into her paramour’s shoes, watching this scene unfold before our hungry eyes. It is this combination of thought and action, of the detailed journey through desire, that is the hallmark of the leather set. That’s not to say that other genres don’t have their shining moments, but the most consistent, quality exploration of this topic comes from the writers who came name seven different types of whip. In large part, this is because leather authors need to explain some inherently unnatural behavior. Everyone understands the buff football player wanting to tag the perky cheerleader – it’s merely the pursuit of pleasure. Even newborn babies get this – pleasure is good, move toward it. Pain is bad, move away. Right? Wrong. For reasons that defy explanation, some people are wired with an ability to derive sexual pleasure from physical and psychological torment. For others, the same enjoyment comes from inflicting said torment. Within the community of people who go out to try this in real life, a whole set of rituals and regulations have grown up to ensure everything is kept safe, sane and consensual. In the much larger community that gets no closer to S&M that some furtive one-handed reading, no such constraints apply. That’s why fictional leather tends toward the more extreme than real-life fun and games. When you’re writing, the dominant partner may decide to push the submissive’s boundaries by ordering any number of behaviors – seducing a stranger, laying naked on one’s lawn – conveniently located on a busy thoroughfare – being ‘forced’ to service a mutual friend, et cetera. In real life, boundary pushing is much more subtle. It may involve nothing more demanding than leaving two extra buttons open – but if you’re the extremely modest sub, that’s enough to make a trip to the mall an exquisite torment. What does this mean to the writer? First of all, as with any other genre, aspiring leather writers should be familiar with the traditions. Read extensively, and you’ll find certain themes keep reappearing, regardless of author. There are motifs used to signify changes in the power relationship – the first time a sub kneels to a new master, the tight caress of the collar – that speak completely to the mindset. Of course, physical elements are important as well – has there been a set of nipples anywhere in leather land without something shiny dangling from them? You can write a great leather story without any of these facets, but remember, when someone goes to Pizza Hut, they don’t want a Big Mac. If you’re trying to reach a certain audience, you need to use what they’re attracted to. The difference between real-life and fictional is important, too. A writer should remember that it is the hiker who wanders the Appalachian foothills that reads most avidly about climbing Everest. Readers (with rare exception) don’t want to read about what they could be doing themselves. They want to know what the next level is, where the “big boys’ play. Only a complete psychopath would enjoy getting whipped, branded, pierced, and sent off into forced bondage to a foreign Harem a week after meeting the new boyfriend – but in fiction, it can work. Indeed, toned down a few notches, that’s the exact plot of many, many 1970’s romance novels! The other thing that writers should realize is that all power play works best within the context of a relationship. Look back to Carey’s masterfully written words. It is the very beginning of the scene, yet we already know that the heroine finds joy in this kind of use, that she has discussed this (on some level) with her soon to be lover, and that they both have a clear idea of what is to come. This works much better than a sudden roadside abduction, where the unsuspecting virgin is brutalized by a complete stranger. There is no power exchange in forced encounters – only a raw assertion of dominance that is tantamount to rape. You lose a vital element, the willing surrender of the submissive partner. You also lose that element of the Dom that does these things because they not only please him, but on some very real level, pleasure his partner as well. It trivializes the characters and the choices they make for love – or lust, as the case may be. Finally, this does all sound very serious and sober –, as does a lot of leather literature. Remember that there is room for fun! The whole point of this is so somebody (besides the reader) gets pure physical enjoyment out of the process – make sure at least one of your characters gets the earth-shaking orgasm! ---
