From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================================

Well, I finally cleaned out my inbox. What this means for you all is that I should be caught up on all my correspondence. If not - if you've written and haven't heard from me - you'll need to try again.

On a related note, from the "Only in Porn Land" files...I did end up with an anonymous erotic story about a pregnant woman on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. If it's yours and I was supposed to look at it, let me know.

But the big news for this issue, which you've probably already noticed if you're reading this online, is that I'm now offering two excellent e-books for sale.

Jenna Glatzer's workbook, More Than Any Human Being Needs To Know About Freelancing, is my favorite resource for freelancers, myself included. She covers everything in her book; idea generating, markets and marketing, querying, contracts and much, much more. Plus Jenna (of AbsoluteWrite.com fame) has included enough market and writing links to keep you working for a long time. This book is fantastic resource for both mainstream writers and porn writers alike. Check it out here.

I spotted the other book at BrilliantSmut.com and knew right away I had to have it. Jamie Joy Gatto (editor of MindCaviar.com ) has put together Suddenly Sexy, an amazing collection of incredibly hot short stories. Just read the sample story and I'm sure you'll agree! Check it out here .

On a related note, many readers have asked for more resources for writers; e-books, products, magazines etc. By next issue I hope to have a page that will list the above and more. Until then you can check out all I've got so far on the order form.

As to this issue, we've got a great article on Erotic Speculative Fiction by Lady Mary, a couple of great Goings On, some info about Siren Mag, some good listings and a little Q & A (including S/M definitions from last issue.) Also, I'm not sure that I included a url when I announced the winner of the last short story contest so if you haven't done so already, check out SL Nelson's great story, Melting.

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

Katy

===========================================
--- Erotic Speculative Fiction, an Introduction ---
--- By Lady Mary ---
===========================================

Some feelings, like lust, are universal, as the recent offerings of erotic speculative fiction show. Regardless of species, race, or planet of origin, attraction, lust, and consummation play themselves out in the pages of well-crafted prose.

Most of the time.

Like mainstream erotica, speculative fiction, which encompasses both fantasy and science fiction, contains plots that to the seasoned reader will seem clichéd. A variety of time-worn attempts at seduction, such as the alien needing human DNA obtained only by sexual encounters, the vampire who only fucks and feeds (don't they have hobbies?), the alien seducing humans as an experiment, exist to stumble the beginning writer.

Even keeping in mind plots to avoid, the sf landscape still leaves the author much room to cultivate new tales. The sf genre prides itself on looking at our world from a fresh standpoint. Within the bounds of human sexuality, speculative fiction holds many opportunities for looking at this world (among others) and its views.

The "rules" for crafting good erotica are the same, regardless of the genre.

The author needs to know the characters. What motivates them? What drives them? What arouses them?

The setting should be fully realized. Erotica is driven by the senses. The sensual content should be real and necessary to the plot. Two aliens need just as much reason to become intimate as two humans do.

Erotic speculative fiction demands another task from the author -- world building. Stories set in modern, or even historical, times come with a pre-built set of rules and regulations. When writing about a setting, whether it's a star system several light-years away or a universe in which vampires and werewolves are real, the author creates the world from the ground up. In order for the reader to suspend disbelief, the world has to be real. Not everything has to be created, especially in a short piece of fiction, but the reader needs enough information to make him or her slip into this pretend world.

There are many places that offer the aspiring writer a foothold into this unique world. Fan fiction, stories set in popular TV or Movies, is a nonpaying, but fun way to exercise these talents. A quick web search under the television or movie (fan fiction exists for most popular shows, including those not science fiction) and the words "fan fiction" will bring up a plethora of websites. A sub-genre of fan fiction, slash, is devoted specifically to sexual pairings, and is named because of the slash used to determine gender (i.e. m/f f/f m/m). Many authors never go beyond crafting well-written slash.

However, those wishing to venture into the paying markets will find a wide opportunity, if they are bold enough. Most publication guidelines don't specifically state that speculative fiction (or other genre fiction) is welcome. Authors need to query their favorite publications to see if they buy speculative fiction. Most editors don't mind, as long as the story fits the other parameters of their magazine, and the author might gain a sale with a story that differs from the norm.

At the heart of the matter, a good erotic speculative fiction story will tell a tale, a good one that hopefully arouses the reader and makes the reader think. Crafting erotic speculative fiction needn't be difficult if the author applies the same thought and care that would be given to any other genre.

GRUNT & GROAN: The New Fiction Anthology of Work and Sex Edited by Matthew Firth and Max Maccari

The workplace may be the engine of labour and commerce for some, but for others it’s little more than a playground for lurid sexual interraction; a 9-5 singles’ joint, where, deprived of the liberating effects of alcohol, the tension is upped a hundred-fold. Some of us can’t wait for the quitting-time whistle. Some of us have to act on the tension, the energy, the lust and just do it...on the boss’s time, of course.

This anthology will blow the covers off the workplace, stripping bare the seething social-sexual undercurrent that runs through every office, factory, retail outlet, warehouse, or—heaven-forbid—hotel, where we spend those grunt hours working on getting something more than a paycheque. These are short stories about the benefit schemes the boss never tells you about. Grunt & Groan is a bare-bones look at the human sexual animal at work.

We need work and sex stories. How dirty the job and how dirty the sex, or how straight the job and how straight the sex; that’s your call. Just make the reader work up a sweat. But, please, no cliché repairman/bored housewife tales. Give us the goods. These can be tales of lust that never materialize; a common workplace obsession. Or tales of unfettered fucking in the stockroom. You decide.

Please send hard copies of short stories to a maximum of 4000 words, along with a brief writer’s bio, and SASE with sufficient Canadian postage for a reply. International queries (exclusing the US) require Internatioanl Reply Coupons. We can also reply by email so leave a valid email address. Send you stuff to:

Siren Mag
============================

Well, now I'm really confused!

There are two Siren Magazines and it appears as though neither one is responding to emails. Thanks to all of you who wrote trying to set the record straight!

The magazine that I referred to in the last issue, the Canadian mag, is supposedly still up, but I have yet to hear from them, so I can't vouch for that.

The UK site is one that many people have had trouble with and, for all intents and purposes it does appear to be down.

I'll keep you posted if I hear from either one. Please let me know if you find any more information.

===========================================
--- Q & A ---
=============================================

Answer to the question about BDSM (and related) acronyms:

A reader sent me the following site, which should answer all your questions and more!

http://www.bdsbbs.com/define.html

---

Another reader wrote:

I have been reading comments from a lot of writers about whether one should write for free or not, especially when first breaking into a genre. What is your take on this debate? I sent one of my stories off to a web site which had previously be paying for porn stories. The editor said that he liked it, only they had just changed their policy and were no longer paying writers. Should I continue to submit stuff to this web site, just to have it published, or should I cross them off my list and keep looking for paying markets?

---

This is a tough one. It can be tempting to just go with it and allow your writing to be posted everywhere, just so that you can see your name in print.

But it's wise to consider what you want to do with your writing and whether or not you get anything out of writing for free.

Personally, I'll write for free only for exposure for the site or maybe as a favor to an editor who's helped me out in some way.

This is partly because many sites that don't pay will take anything, and they often showcase poor quality writing. Even if yours is better, you may not want it lumped in with all those poorly written stories. Also, some of these sites are only looking for free content, so it's a good idea to evaluate their motives.

There are, however, high quality sites that can't afford to pay. These editors are very picky about what they accept, and a byline in one of these publications might very well be worth your time as a clip and as exposure.

You'll need to evaluate each situation individually and make choices that work for you.

---

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
