No, I'm not ready for Christmas and I don't want to talk about it. Well, maybe a little...

I always swear that this will be the year that I have the money and time to start early and get everything done. Sigh. Unfortunately that's not going to happen this year either. Either my circumstances or my attitude needs to change; I'm just not sure which one of those will be the easiest to adjust ;)

This is always the time of year when the kids get a lot of time off school and I end up with precious little time to write, let alone to keep up with everything else. With that in mind, I may go to once-a-month newsletters after the New Year; there's just so much to do. I haven't made a firm decision yet so I'll keep you posted.

We've got a winner for the short story contest in this issue. This was the hardest one yet for me. All five entries were *very* good. Check out the details below.

Also in this issue is another stellar column on non-fiction writing by Don Vaughan, a great review in Kevin's Book Review Corner, many Goings On, plus a couple of good Market Listings.

Enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

Katy
P.S. Hope you all have a Happy Holiday season!

=========================================
Short Story Contest - Winter 2001!
=========================================

And the winner is...

Melting
SL Nelson

I know I said this last time, too, but the stories were all so good that I had a really hard time deciding on the winner. Y'all are getting really good at this writing thing! (Although I should have known that by the Goings On you send me.)

In the end I went with the short and bittersweet.

Take a look at the story Here and I think you'll agree with my choice.

If you'd like to get a jump on the next contest, scheduled for March 2002, take a look at the rules and guidelines and/or check out the Winner's Page to read our previous winners' stories.

Congratulations SL!

As I write this column, I'm preparing to go on vacation -- a much-needed four-day respite at Walt Disney World with my lovely wife Nan. Our itinerary includes a day at the Magic Kingdom, a day at MGM/Disney, a day at Epcot and a night or two on Pleasure Island. Not to mention a pricey but comfortable room in an official Disney resort and several expensive but delicious meals at Disney's fine restaurants.

What this means, of course, is the loss of four valuable work days. Four days away from the computer and the phone and the fax and everything else that defines my occupation. Three days without writing a word. Three days of supposed rest and relaxation.

In preparation, I conducted three extensive telephone interviews today for an article on hiring trends I'm writing for Veterinary Product News. I also set up four other interviews for when I get back. Had I not done this, I would be horrifyingly behind in my work upon my return, and as we all know, a deadline waits for no man.

Don't get me wrong. I'm really looking forward to spending some time away from work and home. But I'm not kidding myself. As any real writer knows, you never leave your work behind. It goes where you go, omnipresent and insatiable.

Were I to work in a factory making automobiles, things no doubt would be very different. My work day would probably be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (with maybe a little overtime if I were lucky), and when I went on vacation, I would leave the tools of my trade at the door and never look back.

But writing isn't like that. It's not a 9-to-5, Monday through Friday kind of thing. Truth is, a writer works all the time -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We work on weekends and holidays. We work while strolling on the beach and attending our children's birthday parties and listening to the minister drone on in church.

It's just the nature of our profession. We can't help it. Ideas come to us at the darndest times. Incredible leads fall from the heavens when we least expect them. That troublesome "right word" will enter our brain when it should be the farthest thing from our mind.

That's how the writer's brain works. And there's nothing we can do about it.

So even though I'm looking forward to spending four days at Disney World, I'm fully aware that my job will be following me every step of the way. I'll have a pad and pen with me on the drive up, and a smaller version in my pocket while riding Space Mountain.

I have to, because vacations past have proved that I'll come up with about 10 great article ideas on the ride up, another half dozen on the ride home, and God knows what else while walking from Frontierland to Tomorrowland.

For some strange reason, my brain refuses to go on vacation. I can't stop looking at the world through my Writer's Eye. Everything I do, everyone I meet, every place I go is a potential article or short story. The last time Nan and I visited Disney World, I wondered about the people who work so hard keeping the park clean. What kind of stuff do they find left behind by careless tourists at the end of the day? What treasures lay buried in the park's lost and found?

And what about the nurses who work at amusement parks? I'll bet their stories would make find fodder for a humorous piece to a nursing journal.

And how does Disney World prepare for a hurricane? To the best of my knowledge, the park's never been hit, but you never know. How long does it take to tie down Cinderella's castle and secure the Haunted Mansion? All of these topics, I think, would make great articles.

That's how my mind works all the time. And frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

My advice to you? Don't fight it when you start seeing the world only through your Writer's Eye. It's stronger than you and resistance is futile. Instead, go along for the ride, take as many notes as you can, and then write like you've never written before.

And when you've sold the end result, let me know. Nothing would make me happier.

See you when I get back.

The Toy
By Claire Thompson
ISBN # 1-58873-048-4
(http://www.renebooks.com)

One of the things I like about Claire Thompson’s work is that she constantly explores the release of hidden desires in her female characters. Sure, the men learn a little something along the way, but her primary focus is women. After reading several of her works, it is very clear that one of the things she attempts to do through the vehicle of sexual bondage is to show that the woman becomes empowered and in control of her own destiny. In each case, the main female character is almost reborn into a new confident persona that knows exactly what she wants out of life and her future. This is certainly true in her latest book, The Toy. In a delightful twist on the title, the toy in the person of Gina, comes to mean so much more than just that to herself as well as those around her.

As the novel opens, we meet the very proper and seemingly somewhat plump, Gina. She is engaged to Dwayne a young man that she first met years ago in Kindergarten. They both attend the same Church and while she has no real desires for him, she has no real desires for any other person. Her parents have assured her that God wants things this way and that she is to have Dwayne’s children. The only thing she does beyond the straight and narrow is volunteer at a local community center in a bad area of town.

Unavoidably detained one dark evening, she is abducted and knocked unconscious. When she awakens, the young virgin is horrified to discover that she is completely naked except for the strong ropes that bind her to an upright chair. Soon, she meets one of her captors and is helpless under his touch as he admires her body.

The young woman is introduced to what is in store for her as a sexual plaything for her captors. She quickly experiences her first nipple torture through the use of clothespins as well as her first spanking with a riding crop at the hands of Gordon. Gordon enjoys hurting Gina and seems to also hold power over her other captor, Frank. Frank is less sadistic than Gordon and assumes more of a role as sexual mentor to the naive and inexperienced Gina.

Frank begins to train Gina for her new duties and slowly the group dynamic begins to fundamentally change. Gina, forced to be on a diet by her captors begins to emotionally appreciate her body. Her whole point of view towards herself and the world slowly changes and as she changes the twin male characters are also forced to evolve. Attractions shift between the three as each character slowly evolves. As the toy begins to subtly at first assert herself, Frank and Gordon are each forced to confront themselves as well as their interactions leading to ultimately, profound changes in everyone’s lives as the power shifts to the former captive.

This is a very enjoyable erotic read full of interesting characters and themes. Claire Thompson continues to provide her fans and readers with interesting and complicated works that function on many different levels. She remains a great pleasure to read and I look forward to more of her work.

---Looking for Writers---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

I pay with a copy of the updated 'It's A Dirty Job...Writing Porn For Fun And Profit' or 'Porn 101: 12 Essays On The Art Of Writing Porn And Erotica,' plus a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
