Includes Paying Markets! By Katy Terrega This e-book has EVERYTHING the aspiring porn writer needs to know! Click on http://www.katyterrega.com/dirtyjob.html for chapter headings and excerpts. Or order here - http://www.KatyTerrega.com/orderebook.html ========================================= Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. We had a decidely non-traditional feast at our house this year. Home-made minestrone soup, biscuits and pumpkin pie. Different but very tasty! Now it's time to get ready for Xmas, but I'm not so sure I'm ready for that yet... To keep us busy till then, we've got the last short story contest of the year in this issue. Ah, yes, fame and fortune could be yours! Lest you let the threat of competition keep you from entering, check out below for some heartening news! We've got several great markets in this issue plus an article by Sascha Illyvich on how to use discussion groups to promote your work. A Goings On and A Call From a Reader round out the issue. Hope you enjoy it and please keep in touch! Katy =========================================
For those of you who hesitate to enter I'd like to point out that the competition is not as fierce as you might think. Each of our contests has had only a handful of entrants (always under 10) so your chances are actually quite good! Prize is $25 plus your choice of e-books, and, of course, lasting fame on our Winner's Page. Take a look at the rules and guidelines here http://www.katyterrega.com/contestrules.html and then send your best! =========================================== It is our job as writers to get our works out to the masses in whatever manner we can. One of our most powerful tools is self-promotion. Sure, the big publishing companies help us to an extent, but readers buy books through word of mouth and it’s still the fastest way to generate attention for one’s work. With the invention of the Internet, our audience has broadened. Email, web pages and sites, plus the lower costs of computers, all have allowed readers to connect faster with others who share similar interests. This, in turn, allows authors to gain readership. Discussion lists from Yahoo and ListBot have also helped authors gain momentum. Like little communities, some of these discussion lists boast hundreds of members. These members read many of the messages that trickle in their inboxes daily as well as discuss writing techniques. The posting of work for editing is possible on many of these lists. So, do you join as many lists as possible and start plugging your work directly? The short answer is no. While you should join and participate in discussions on the lists you have time for, don’t endlessly plug your work and expect the entire group to check it out. That’s not the reason these lists were started. Self-promotion will irritate many list members and if you go on about in this manner the moderator will likely to remove you from the list. Instead, many moderators allow the use of short signatures at the end a post. These throwbacks are from when UNIX was mainstream and email often included corporate information. They are just a simple statement about your work; if published online the URL generally follows. For example: Sascha Illyvich
You can even put a few links in your signature. But be careful not to push it, moderators on some lists hate long signatures. I recently trimmed down my signature from seven lines to about three or four since I created a web page for my own self-promotion. Another way to plug your work is to pay attention to the content on the lists and when an opportunity arises, be subtle about mentioning your work. I belong to a sensual romance list where the stories discussed are not picked apart for style, but rather, evaluated for the plot, themes and characters. I find little ways to mention my work in the discussions when I can, saying something about how I define characters, “plunk down a story I’ve published online” in this space as an example. Readers can check out my work if they desire. At least the information is present and I’ve not bothered the moderators with unnecessary off topic posts. Of course we don’t always have time to follow each and every list we join but yahoo groups allows the use of the digest feature, which condenses several messages into one email. Of course, pay attention to the subject lines as things can get confusing in long posts. The rules of list etiquette are short and simple. Politeness usually yields the best results; that means not complaining if people don’t notice your work right away. It may take time for people to notice your links or even to check them out. There are special exceptions to the rule. For example if you have a press release for a major work you’d like to share, I’d check with the moderators first before you just post away. The New era conspiracy drew up a press release for Tidal Wave, which I’ve sent out to local newspapers and discussion lists where appropriate. It’s pulled some weight, created some discussion for the book and brought attention to my writing ability. All of the things a post about my writing should do, but without annoying anyone. Lastly, I’d like to say have fun with the lists. They were started for a reason and can be a useful research tool for you as an author when you stumble across a particularly active discussion list. I belong to a few BDSM lists and FemDomme lists, all of which are highly active, and I’ve gained a few readers through my pithy participation. The sensual Romance list I mentioned had another author recommend my work and also gave me a review, and every good review is a good step in building readership. === Copyright (2001) by Sascha, ssscb@hotmail.com All rights reserved. Roche seeks erotica by men for the anthology BEST MEN'S EROTICA, to be published by Cleis Press in the fall of 2002. Stories must be explicitly sexual and concern the expression of male sexuality and male desire, whether that desire is focused on women, other men, both, or neither. Stories for BME must start strong and sizzle throughout. Writers and readers are encouraged to send recommendations for favorite stories they've read; both previously unpublished material and material first published in calendar years 2000 and 2001 will be considered. Stories can be vanilla or kinky, romantic or raunchy, and can be on straight or bi or gay or transgendered or solo-sexuality themes -- or any combination thereof. No poetry. Email submissions only: send to bestmenserotica@yahoo.com as text within the body of an email, NOT as an attachment, and make sure you put an extra return after the end of every paragraph. You must put your email address, mailing address, name and pseudonym at the top of every submission. Improperly formatted stories or stories sent as attachments will be deleted unread.
EROTIC TRAVEL TALES 2: Following the release of the first Erotic Travel Tales, a follow-up anthology of Erotic Travel Tales is currently being assembled by author/anthologist Mitzi Szereto for print publication by Cleis Press. The anthology will be international in scope. Since this is to be a collection of location-based erotica, the author should know of what he/she is writing about. Details must be accurate. Stories can be about character(s) travelling to a particular location or else take place in a particular location. Let your creativity flow! Specifications: 1. Stories can be of any length, but no longer than 8,000 words.
Previously published material will be considered, providing you have the rights or can get the rights. (Please indicate where and when published, plus rights status.) Please take a look at the current anthology - this will give you the best idea of the type of material I am interested in. Submission requirements: Stories must be submitted in typewritten hard copy, double-spaced (with a Word for Windows-compatible file available on request). Manuscripts not chosen will be discarded, so do not send your only copy. You should include with your submission a one-paragraph author bio and your e-mail address. For questions and information on where to send your submission, please e-mail: WordDabbler@yahoo.com Submission deadline is April 15 2002. I look forward to reading your stories! THREE THE HARD WAY: Acclaimed editor Austin Foxxe is accepting submissions for a new anthology all about gay male threesomes. Send your hottest stories about three studs getting together and getting it on. May be true or fictional. 1000-5000 words. See URL for full guidelines.
Address: Three the Hard Way, Submissions, Alyson Books, 6922 Hollywood
Boulevard, Suite 1000, Los Angeles, CA 90028
=========================================== "I have just completed and *.pdf'd "Erotiscapes", my first short story compilation. I am seeking a reviewer or two to help get some "pre publicity" before I push this onto a publisher, be it an e-book or traditional. The stories are mostly fetish related, with my own romance angle thrown over. The Sarah/Jolie Series is my attempt at lesbian love while "Tradition" is a hetero fantasy turned into a love story. "Excerpt from Night Passion" explores a vampire theme while "Community Service" is just hot!" I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
