Can you belive it? This is our 50th issue! Good Lord, I can't believe I've put out 50 of these! Hmmm, maybe I should do another quick contest to celebrate. How about...the 50th person to email me at katy@katyterrega.com gets a copy of either "It's A Dirty Job" or "Porn 101 and 102." Yep, that'll do...

I'm hip deep in deadlines right now - some porn and some not - so I'll forego my usual chatter and just move on to the good stuff...

We've got a really big issue this month. Kevin Tipple writes about the book "DarkWind (Book II of the WindDemon Trilogy)," CB Potts gives a very informative look at why your manuscripts may be getting rejected and we've got several good listings.

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch!

I was so close – the thrilling conclusion to my favorite activity only a few finger motions away – and I clicked on an e-mail from my editor, hoping that "My Patriotic Duty" had found a new home, and that a check would soon be on its way. I was flush with tingly excitement. I’d get to dance my happy dance.

Instead, I sat with a sinking feeling in my stomach, feeling that familiar ache that comes with every rejection. It was a good rejection, as these things go. My editor stressed that "My Patriotic Duty" was a good story, that it would certainly sell somewhere – just not to a magazine that is distributed in Canada.

This was a first. I’d been told I had a dirty mind before – but now I’m so perverted that I’ve offended an entire country? And it didn’t seem to jive with what I know of Canadians. I live just a short drive from Montreal – a very European, liberated, and sexual city. The sex stores in that town leave me looking for instruction manuals – and I have more than the usual depth of knowledge in this area, if you know what I mean.

A few phone calls, some Internet searching, and one red-faced questioning session with our local postmaster, and this is what I’ve discovered: The Canadian import regulations are a confusing web, and they’re not even sure what will pass and what won’t. One customs official told me, "We tolerate different levels of perversion – some is okay, some is not."

Under the same logic, you can ship guns into some provinces, but not ammunition. The underlying logic behind the approval process lies in the power dynamic of the characters involved in the story/picture/film. Egalitarianism is one of the cornerstones of the Canadian official culture, and this applies even to their porn.

That means S&M is out. Bondage, no matter how slap and tickle, silk-ties-and-feathers it is, is not allowed. All forms of domination cause problems – from the psychological order & obey banter so easy to write (and so fun to read!) to the more ‘hard-core’ pleasures. This means most disciplining stories are out – whether they be watersports, scat stories, enema delights, or spanking, slapping, and stomping.

That seems simple enough, but the law leaves room for further interpretation. Canadian law also prohibits the importation of any porn considered "humiliating or excessively demeaning" I was unable to find out where one crosses the line from just demeaning to excessively demeaning.

So what does that stop? All sorts of good stuff. No sex with pregnant women. No sex with women menstruating. No cum shots – not on the face, not on the chest. Anything that could be perceived in a light where "the primary intention is to degrade the participants." It’s a fluid boundary that is largely dependent on the political atmosphere at the time.

Additionally, Canadian law prohibits the importation of entire categories of porn: Necrophilia, Bestiality, and Snuff Stories are all strictly verboten. Anything with children, of course, will not only get you in trouble with Canada but with the US as well.

What does this mean for the aspiring pornographer? A writer’s most valuable resource is time – you never want to waste it. So if you’re shooting for a major mag – i.e. one that is distributed outside of the US – avoid all of the aforementioned topics. If you want to write these stories, it’s fine. Just don’t go through the effort and expense of submitting them to forums that through no fault of their own, cannot use them.

That’s great, you say. How do I figure out who that is? The first step, in writing porn or any other genre, is to develop good relationships with everyone you come into contact with. Editors and other writers can be a font of information—and who would know better than an editor would what she can or cannot use? Of course, you could request guidelines, but person-to-person interaction will always give you more than a Xeroxed instruction sheet.

Second, research the magazines you’re submitting to. I know, we’re all supposed to be analyzing story style, word choice, and all of that, but there’s another step that’s just as important. Under the masthead, in that intimidating block of small type will be the valuable information you need – the points of distribution for that particular title. It may be as simple as: Distributed in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Or, thankfully, if leather is your thing: Distributed in the US. Make your submissions accordingly.

Just when you think you’ve got a handle on this, remember that many publishers have their own individualized requirements. These can range from portraying only safe-sex acts to banning any story involving drugs, alcohol, clergy members, public figures, and so on.

Don’t despair! Some art forms (of which porn is definitely one, although surely undervalued) function better within strict parameters. Throw a bunch of words on a page, and you might get a poem. Do it with restraint, carefully counting the number of syllables, and you’ve got a haiku. And think – Look at that folder of rejection slips. We’ve all got them, snarling in our filing cabinet. Reconsider those stories that came back with a simple "Sorry – not for us!" Check where you sent these stories. If it was to a major mag, chances are that they distribute in Canada. Perhaps your rejection had nothing to do with your writing and everything to do with Canadian law.

So, back to the keyboard! Pick up a pen! Write your hearts out! And when you’re finished, maybe this will be the tale that gets published. Even in Canada.

EMPORIUM GAZETTE

"The Emporium Gazette's theme for February 2003 is Sex Sells; described as: The month of love. Can you write a hot scene? What markets? Love is for everyone."

http://www.rolian.com/gazette/subguide.htm

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Each issue of the Emporium Gazette usually has at least one short story, and several articles that relate to the art of writing. Check our schedule of themes. Articles don't always need to match our themes, but if they did, so much better. We also do interviews, an ocassional poetry column and will attempt to let you know of writing opportunities we feel are noteworthy. We've even had a recipe or two!

But first, Word Count is something that most people want to know right up front. We don't want to inhibit your writering with a "must be" this length. We feel that each item will define its own word count. Submission of articles, short stories and interviews should be anywhere from 200 words to approximately 1500 words; whatever is comfortable for what you are submitting. We would rather see a well written 200 word article than an inflated and embellished 800 article just to fit a defined word count. Still, if 800 words is what you need to use to detail yourself, then use 800, or 1000, or whatever. But please remember, we do reserve the right to edit what we feel will enhance your writing.

Articles that look at the process of writing in new and provocative ways. The Emporium Gazette attempts to show the newbie and old-timer pros a dfferent perspective of the business. Writing what you know will reflect in the finished product, but, still, if you would prefer to research and submit, that is acceptable, also.

Interviews of those who are in the business of writing: novelists, short story writers, screenwriters, poets, editors and agents. Tell us and the reader how this person has inspired you or others and what sets this person above others. We want to see a new slant.

Poetry articles that are well written and detail the craft of rhyme and rhythm. We are NOT seeking poetry. You may include your poems or parts of your poems inside the article if they augment the segment you're submitting. If you can tie into the monthly theme, all the better.

Short Stories of almost any genre with a preferred length of no more than 1500 words. Of course, we will consider larger. We're NOT currently seeking flash-fiction.

New, unpublished writers are welcome.

WHERE TO SUBMIT?

Send your submissions to: The Emporium at the-emporium@rolian.com

PAYMENT

As of May 2001, we are a paying ezine. Our rate is a flat, standard $5.00 per article or short story published. We provide a valuable service to the writing arena and for you, the writer, it's a valid and valued publishing credit.

SEE GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION CLOSING DATES

---

A BI-FRIENDLY PLACE

We welcome all bi-friendly folks of any gender or sexual persuasion. Our goal is to create a haven of resources, information, personals and entertainment for bisexuals, people questioning their sexuality, and those who support them. ARTICLES: We are seeking informative articles (re-prints are just fine!) on coming out, bi-visibility, support groups, sexuality, gender issues, empowerment, closet issues, relationships, polyamory, monogamy, bi kink, bisexual issues of any type.

FICTION: We are currently seeking both original and reprints of bi-oriented literary and erotic fiction and poetry. Reprints must be accompanied by statement of copyright and original and all other publication credits. Please make sure you own the copyright to your work before sending it.

Fiction length may be up to 3000 words; shorter is better. We are looking for bisexual themes, first and foremost, and especially for quality writing.

Please do not send us cliche' sob/anger stories about how your bisexual lover left you for someone of the same or opposite sex. Please do not send erotica that involves one, long play-by-play action of a sex scene. We are looking for thought provoking work with substance. We are particularly seeking empowering and sex-positive work, although we will consider work that is about questioning one's sexuality, bi-phobia, dis-inclusion from the gay and straight communities, and other serious bisexual issues.

POETRY: We prefer non-rhyming poetry, but we will consider all forms.

PAYMENT: Help us support a sorely needed area of sex information and education, available bi erotica and bi resources by donating your stories, articles and other relevant work to a worthy cause. We'd like to offer you payment, but A Bi-Friendly Place is a non-profit, free, labor-intensive, true labor of love. We'll gladly offer you a link, bio and/or banner placement along with your work.

SUBMISSIONS: Send all submissions, along with a short cover letter, brief bio and word count in the body of an e-mail with the subject BI-FRIENDLY SUBMISSION to Jamie Joy Gatto. No attachments will be accepted. Thank you for your interest.

A BI FRIENDLY PLACE A Bi-Friendly Place, the popular on-line bisexual resource and magazine [http://www.mindcaviar.com/bi/bi.html] is seeking essays from bisexual or bi-curious people regarding the bi experience. We are developing a new section at Bi-Friendly to aid the bisexual community and to assist those who are bi-curious by offering examples written by real life bisexuals about their feelings and experiences regarding their sexual identity. What we are seeking most are memoirs and current tales about what it feels like to be bisexual. The range and scope of the bisexual identity and experience is wide. Please send your essays of 500-3000 words within the body of an email to: sexcats@earthlink.net. No attachments, include bio, email for full details.

DarkWind (Book II of the WindDemon Trilogy)
By Charlotte Boyett-Compo
2001 Release (according to my copy)
RFI West
http://www.rfiwest.com
ISBN # 158697-220-0
E-Book

As faithful readers of this column already know, I have certain biases or preconceptions of what erotica should be. I expect the work to have an actual storyline and plot, with interesting characters. The erotica, graphic or not, should be an outgrowth that naturally evolves from the plot and the interaction of the characters. It should not be a situation where multiple sex scenes are just strung together to in the guise of a novel. I simply do not want to read the latest literary version of an amateur tape despite the fact that such empty headed things seem to be all the rage right now.

I also believe that as a writer as well as a reader that we should look outside our favorite genre for ideas and techniques so that we can learn how others handle various issues. In that vein, I have tried to bring to you books that, while they may not fit the erotica genre classification by definition, provide examples of great writing and an ability to handle mature themes. Therefore, simply because it is a great book, beyond its mature themes, secondary story and few erotic elements, I selected for this month, DarkWind by Charlotte Boyett-Compo.

I have not had the pleasure of reading this author before, so when I received an ARC version of this novel, I was very leery. Not only was it listed as fantasy, which for the most part seems hokey and lame to me (just how many rings and swords are missing in the world?) but more importantly, it was a second volume of a series. I usually try to stay away from a series I can’t read from the beginning, because it usually leads to a bad reading experience. However, my fears were ungrounded and this is simply a wonderful book. I have no idea how the other ones are, but if they are even close to this one in regards to the quality story telling, you are in for a real treat.

Simplifying greatly, as this novel opens, Khiershon Cree has a problem.

“He was hanging spreadeagled from thick chains embedded in the cave walls, his feet barely touching the ground, his manacled writs flung wide to either side of his sagging head. His bare chest was a riot of star-shaped burns that glistened with each shallow breath he took. His black leather britches were torn at one thigh, ripped along one cuff.”

If being barely alive thanks to the attentions of the Amazeen isn’t enough, he is a Reaper. He is the most wanted man in the universe as well as being a skilled assassin. Within his body lurks a parasite that provides him extraordinary strength as well as healing abilities. In exchange, because of the parasite, he is part humanoid and part something that closely resembles a werewolf. The parasite, at times, demands of him that he must feed and during those times known as the “Transition” he is almost a mindless beast capable of incredible violence.

The Amazeen were torturing him and planning to kill him because after being forced to do their bidding, they fear his as well as his son’s existence. Unfortunately, for them, the warriors guarding the prisoner ingested Hemlock for some reason and had not managed to kill him first. His parasite allowed him to hang on, barely existing, for Dr. Caitlin Kelly and the female crew of the United Space Alliance Medevac Ship, The Orion to find him. The parasite also gives him strong mental powers, one of which is to touch the minds of others.

“His breathing changed when the female scent grew stronger. In his mind, he could see her, but her form was unfamiliar: delicate and dark, smaller than he. But she was a female and it was a female he needed. He tried to call her again, but found he had expended his energy. If she were to find him it would have to be from the mental call he had been generating for weeks in the hope that he would be heard.”

Following her instincts, Dr. Kelly soon finds him. Despite dire warnings of doom from the last guard as she died, Dr. Kelly orders the prisoner to be cut down and brought aboard ship. All that come in contact with him seem to be strangely attracted to him and seem helpless to his will in their dreams as well as in reality.

“The need began in the very pit of her belly and spread. Moisture oozed between her legs, making her knees weak. She reached out to him, clasping his wrist, then pressed against him, her cheek to his wide chest as his hand slid from her head to the nape of her neck.

“’What would you have me do, Helen?’” he asked, his deep, rumbling voice vibrating in her ear. She pulled reluctantly away from the heat of his body and looked into his eyes, drawn deeply into the vortex of his gaze. “’Take me,’” she whispered. “’I want you to take me.’”

His hands were on her shoulders. Moving her gently back from him, then pushing with firm strength until she sank to her knees before him.

* * *

"Lisa walked into the cooling desert of her Texas homeland to find him.
Marjorie swam through the North Atlantic’s cold waters to reach the island where he waited.
Jillian gathered heather in the English mist to take him in a rose-draped bower.
Cathy climbed the rolling hills of her Midwestern farmland.
Shirley ran to him along the teeming banks of the Irish Countryside.
Nicole danced for him in the moonlight beneath a lowering Welsh sky.
June read poetry to him as a gentle rain fell on crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
And the others-nineteen more in all-each found him in her own way, in her own homeland, each searching for the gentle hand he held out to them.”

This ability to manipulate their minds which they are not first aware of is just one of the puzzles the crew must unravel in the first hours as they struggle to keep their patient alive. Slowly, the pieces begin to fit and the crew begins to understand who, or more importantly, what he is. Dr. Kelly is strongly attracted to Cree and he is as well to her, and they make both a physical and an emotional connection.

“He held out his hand to her. ‘Come, Lady.’

She did not hesitate. She did not question. She went to him, stretched out beside him on the cot and reveled in the feel of his strong arms enfolding her.

‘I will make a vow to you, sweeting. I will love no other for as long as there is recorded time. And when time is no more, I will love you still with all that is my heart, my soul, and my body.’ He placed a gentle kiss on her brow. ‘A Reaper’s vow is forever, my lady, and when we mate, we mate for eternity. No other woman will I allow to lay hands to what belongs only to you nor will I put my hands to another.’ A thrill of heart-aching joy rippled through Caitlin, and as his palm molded around her breast, she sucked in an excited breath and clung to him, her body shuddering with delight.”

Their budding romance serves as a backdrop and motivation to save his life beyond the normal doctor/patient relationship. She helps him hide when the Amazeen come looking for him but soon discovers that while she is deeply and surprisingly in love with Cree, he is something completely beyond her experience.

At the same time, while Cree is a skilled assassin and warrior in his own right, the Amazeen are a powerful enemy. With possible links to the ancient race of Amazons on Earth, they believe the only good Reaper is a dead Reaper. The chase continues across star systems and planets as the Amazeen seek to find and destroy Cree and his bloodsons.

Combining romance, science fiction, fantasy and other elements, this novel was simply a great read. The characters are complex and engaging with great writing as well as some humorous interjections and social commentary. This novel was extraordinary and simply a pleasure to read from start to finish. This is one novel, even if you are not a fan of fantasy, which is well worth the investment. Enjoy!

Tell me what's going on! Have you made a sale? Do you have a piece being published? Let me know and I'll print it here for all to see! (It helps if you write it in the format above; makes it easier for me to just cut and paste.)

--- Q & A ---

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
