Yeehaw, school starts tomorrow! And boy, am I happy. Although, to be honest, I'm feeling a little guilty about my unmitigated glee. After all, I really love being around my kids (aged almost 11 and 12,) even if all they did this summer was bicker and play video games. It's just that my work schedule suffers so in the summer. And starting tomorrow I'll have a whopping 5 1/2 hours a day (on a good day, that is, one where I'm not running errands, taking care of a sick kid, delivering a forgotten lunch, going on a field trip, having a parent/teacher conference, etc., etc.) to actually work. I can hardly wait! Hope your summer went well and that those of you with kids will now be able to sit down to some serious writing. We've got a good issue for you this week... Kevin Tipple forgoes his usual column and gives a little advice on how to increase your chances of getting a good review for your book. Mary Cook talks about her foray into sex writing as she nears her sixties. And we've got several good markets for you. As usual, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch! Katy

When you're young, and confident your body will stand up to scrutiny, sex is a pastime to be pursued in full daylight in the open air. Or you can frolic with the lights on, in front of triple mirrors. But it's all deadly serious as your mind is fixed on honing your technique. When you're young, you can't imagine older people ever having had sex. Yet they have kids, don't they? As for your own parents - don't even go there. Well, you know they must have done it. But it was years ago and only twice, just to get you and your brother. But I've got news at you. You can have sex in later years - and it's a lot more fun. Well, it has to be. You just have to laugh when your tits hang where your waist used to be and your ass has set up a cellulite factory somewhere near your knees. In addition, your face has lost a fight with Father Time and is set on a collision course with the Grim Reaper. But isn't that what those cute little leather hoods were invented for? Once you reach a certain age, you need to have fun before you can have fun, if you see what I mean. The spirit is willing, but the flesh needs a little extra help. Role-play, bondage and S&M were invented to get ageing bodies in the mood. That's why, at nearly sixty years, I emerged as Mistress Snakebite, while my husband, at around three months my junior, became 'slave'. Note the small 's' - the sniveling little creature doesn't warrant a capital letter, much less a name. Mistresses are meaner than a whole gang of mothers-in-law. They wear a lot of black and purple and their hair has to be black or dark red. The dishwater blond had to go, I decided, so I opted for a scary burgundy shade. The overall effect was of a character from a gothic horror film where every scene is played for laughs. Then came the collection fever - the quest for stinging, clinging, strappy, whippy things, not to mention the little plastic and rubber things for ramming up slave's delicious butt. Half the fun was working out what bit went where - and why. But writers can't just do things. They have to write about them as well. I'd been a professional writer for a number of years, but erotica was a field I'd never seriously considered. I'd teetered on the edge of porn and dipped my toe in the water when I became a spoof 'agony aunt' to an adult publication called The Lark. But my toe was the only part of my anatomy to be exposed, as the magazine was made widely available through a chain of pubs. It meant the content had to be pretty tame in case some minor got his sticky little fingers on it. Writing for The Lark was easy money as I dedicated my column to giving old jokes a fresh twist. A typical example was:
Never mind the quality, feel the length. These harmless bagatelles kept me in pocket money for years. Sadly, The Lark fell to earth when the sponsorship money ran out. But I never stopped writing humor. So when my sex life took a slightly twisted turn, it provided the topic for my next writing project. Then began the search for a paying market. Any number of editors seemed keen to print my work in return for 'exposure'. Excuse me? Exposure is what I get when I'm being Mistress Snakebite. Writing is my living - what I do for dollars, pounds sterling or material goods. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across the UK magazine Desire (Editor's note: See Market Listings for info on this market) because it uses as many as eight reader fantasies per issue. To my delight, my very first fantasy was accepted. This success marked a new age in my writing as I clung to the slippery slope leading into old age. So next time you see a little old man or lady in your travels, show some respect. Their sex life is probably more fun than yours. What's more, they may be earning mega-bucks by writing about it and having a really good laugh. --- Mary Cook lives in rural England with her husband Nick, a community psychiatric nurse, and their cat Lotus and dog Brucie. Mary is a late developer in every sense. She wrote as a paying hobby from her schooldays, but it wasn't until she was in her mid-forties that she began writing seriously. Perhaps "seriously" isn't quite the right word as much of her work has a humorous slant. At 52, she became a "cub reporter" on her local newspaper, leaving at 58 after she had risen to chief reporter, to set up her own business, freelancing and teaching creative writing. She has just began writing porn. In two months' time she will be sixty - officially an old age pensioner. The good news for all you youngsters out there is that the writing improves with age. And so does the sex!

Address:
Editor: Ian Jackson Uses: features, columns, reader fantasies and erotic poetry Payment:
Payment on publication. --- Call for Submissions EroticSF.com (http://www.eroticsf.com/), an e-publisher of erotic speculative fiction would like to invite authors to submit stories for proposed anthologies. ESF hopes to be able to pay authors for their submissions, either in royalties or a flat fee for the stories. Final rate of pay not yet determined. Stories will fall into one of three themes: Sexual tales involving creatures of the night. I would like erotic tales of vampires, werewolves, demons, anything "dark." Stories don't need to have dark endings, nor be excessively dark in tone, but should reflect the spirit of such stories. Tales of futuristic sex. These tales can take place on our own earth or in other galaxies, as long as it is science fiction and involves sex. Bards. I want the sexual exploits of bards and minstrels. I'd like these stories to be tales of high fantasy. Authors can submit for one anthology, or all of them, but one story per anthology per author, please (i.e. maximum of three stories from each author). Stories can be erotica or erotic romance, and should be submitted in the body of an email with a subject line of ANTHOLOGY SUBMISSION to editor@eroticsf.com. I would like to receive stories prior to September 30. For more information, email editor@eroticsf.com. --- WICKED VELVET Publishing partners Bethany Burke and Frances LaGatta first announced their web launch WICKED VELVET; www.wickedvelvet.com featuring serialized erotic romances on October 10, 2001. They now feature some wonderfully creative pens. Wicked Velvet readers/members and are extremely delighted with stories from rising stars writers and published authors’ Sharon Green of sci-fi fame, Melissa MacNeal of Black Lace Books, multi-genre author Carole Bellacerra, and Don Winslow of the Ironwood series and Blue Moon Books, to name a few. Bethany Burke has been publishing erotica on the Internet for years. A published historical author in the 1980's, she is MUCH more pleased with how the Internet is working out for her. Bethany has the adult membership site with the highest percentage of female members of any adult site in the world. And we are actively seeking more contributors for Wicked Velvet at this time. We are looking for a wide variety of erotica, anything from Susan Johnson or Thea Devine type historicals to something as overtly sexual as Anne Rice's Beauty series. We want our writers to be able to explore some of the non-politically correct topics which romance novels seemed to have featured in the 70's and are now lacking, i.e., soft core BDSM and spanking, harem/slave fantasy, abduction fantasy, etc. As our writers’ guidelines state, we want 4000-7000 word chapters, and novels/novellas anywhere from 10-15 chapters. We require four chapters from un-published writers upon acceptance but are willing to work more liberally with published authors who have demonstrated the ability to complete a work. For more extensive information go to www.wickedvelvet.com and click our writers 'guidelines' button. Sincerely, Lori Coppola a.k.a. As faithful readers know, I try to select a book every month for this space that reflects writing that, while it may or may not be erotic, showcases talent. Often, the book that showed such promise is felled by avoidable errors. Errors that seem to be happening at a steadily rising rate and ones that don’t help the author obtain a positive review. So, I would like to offer a few tips based on my experiences both here as well as my mainstream work on other sites that may help you down the line in your writing career. First, and maybe most important, make sure that the reviewer has a clean copy without typos, grammar errors, etc. to work from in doing the review. Whether you send the book or your publisher sends a copy, it is vitally important that the copy be error proof. No matter how well you write, great writing won’t stand out if the reviewer has to wade through needless errors. Second, query the reviewer before sending the book. Please don’t send it unannounced and expect the reviewer to open the attachment. Thanks to widespread virus, worm and everything in-between attacks, most won’t. Instead you will be deleted and forgotten with the rest of the spam. Third, keep an eye on the public image of your publisher. If the publisher is known to attack reviewers personally and professionally through discussion lists, most reviewers won’t deal with them. I know of at least a half of dozen publishers that have done this sort of thing on a repeated basis, which I won’t name any of them because they have deeper pockets than I do. But I won’t work them anymore regardless of the author because it isn’t worth the extra grief. Forth and finally, assuming everything went okay, the book was read and now the review is posted. The worst has happened and you’re crushed because the review isn’t positive. Well, dust yourself off and get over it. Remember that in the history of publishing, no single book has ever appealed to everyone. You are going to get some negative reviews. Count on it! But, the answer is not to create a web site and use it to attack the reviewer or reviewers. Professionally stupid as well as opening yourself up to other problems. Instead, laugh at the negative critics and don’t worry about them. Haven’t you got more important things to do like writing your next novel? So, there you are—a few gentle hints to help you in your career. Hopefully, something will strike a chord and help your. Back to the books and see you next month. As always, if you know of a good author—please let me know! ========================================== Mako Allen (who won the "It's A Dirty Job" giveaway last year) writes: "...Since then I've completed and sold my first novel! It's called "Auntie Eva's Boarder" and it's being published by Pink Flamingo (http://www.pinkflamingo.com) in September! It's very much a work of fetish erotica, dealing with spanking, ageplay, diapers, enemas, lots and lots of female domination, and many, many other fetishes, too. I'm also releasing the novel as an audiobook at http://www.mp3.com/mako_allen Your book's been an invaluable help to me, and I recommend it highly to anyone and everyone. " --- Kelly Steed has had her poem Dear Leslie published in the August 3, 2002 Edition of A Light in the Window Ezine. http://www.jassmine.com --- Danielle Smith reports her flash story, "Conservation", appears in the Special section of the August issue of Amoret Online at http://amoretonline.com/C809.htm. --- Congrats! Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
