Sorry I had to put off the newsletter for a week, thanks to all of you for your patience. I was working on two assignments. One, my monthly sex advice column in Naughty Neighbors, finally got turned in today. But it was the other one that had me the most concerned. It was a "Market Spotlight" on sex markets for Writer's Digest and I wanted to make sure it was perfect. Luckily they liked it and it'll be in the December issue. I'm really psyched about this one! Porn/Erotica hits the big time ;) I used some of our favorite markets, a mag from Diana Sheridan and Hustler Fantasies among them, and had a great time writing and researching it. Writer's Digest really is a great market to work with; very professional as well as friendly and accessible. But now I'm back on track... This issue is a little short but we've got a great article by Tara Alton - "I'm Writing Porn!" - three very good listings (check out Gay DVD Empire, they're doing something new) and several good Goings On. Could a timid, quiet girl write publishable stories about flushed, sweaty bodies locked together in a torrid embrace, enumerating all the details about a healthy mind blowing orgasm? I had no idea. So far, I’d written horror stories that were published in the small press, but I’d never written anything truly sexy, just frightening. Sure, I’d thrown in a few lingering kisses, but that was usually before some horrible monster came to do what it had to do. After ten years of this, I wanted to write something adventuresome, but did I have the balls? I had grown up in a fairly sheltered household. My parents never even kissed in front of me. I did discover my father’s Playboy in the desk drawer when I was ten. I got in one peek before I was caught, and the hell I got afterward made me never want to look in there again. Later, I found a Playgirl at a friend’s house where I read a fantasy story about a woman in an elevator with two men, which stayed with me for years. I still can’t go in an elevator without thinking about a stranger’s hands sliding down my pants. Then two forces came into my life that changed my writing life forever. First was my new friend at work. She was a submissive. Our co-workers were a little put off by her tales of sex and adventure, preferring to discuss babies and taco salad. Not me. I was intrigued. I couldn’t hear enough about her getting collared in St. Louis, wearing a piece of lavender lace around her neck until her master had her collar custom made, and her attending leather fashion shows, where a woman had her nipples pierced on stage. Secondly, I met my future fiance. When I first saw his copies of Penthouse, I waited to feel the outrage I thought I should feel as a woman. It didn’t come. The women were pretty, and the fiction was good. Plus, I got back all those wonderful twinges I felt from that elevator story. I wanted to do this. Write a "twinge." I answered a call for submissions, got an acceptance letter, but I never got my contributor copy. I knew the issue had to be out by now, and like all aspiring writers, I wanted to see my work in its natural habitat, on the shelf so to speak. So, I made my first visit to the triple X news store. It was tucked away in a strip mall between a pet store and a shoe shore. The windows were all blocked off. Inside the front of the store, there was an ancient manakin who wore a red frilly teddy. That was it. But in the rear, there was a set of swinging doors. The counter girl waved me through without a fee. I managed a wan smile of thanks. One wall was filled with sex toys, bright pink and purple neon dildos. To the rear, all I saw was flesh. The video section. There were a few men in there. Their discomfort at my presence was obvious. A twitch. A double take. They acted as if I had invaded their secret world. found the magazine rack. My gaze traveled over the titles, and there it was. I was published in the biggest tittie magazine on the rack. There she was. My poor heroine who liked to enjoy a hot tub in a special way. It wasn’t her fault the pool boy was so cute and her breasts were so large. Flipping through the pages, I was happy to see my writing in print. I basked in the glow until I glanced around me, and it sunk in. Dear god. Thousands of men were taking my story home, taking out their lap lizards and doing god knew what on the pages. I was writing porn. Take-it-home-in-a-brown-paper-bag-and-stash-it-under-the-bed porn. I felt as if the rug was pulled out from beneath me. I’d found something I really liked writing, and yet I was right back to being that ten-year-old girl. I didn’t know what I was going to do. Conflicted, I bought a copy and went home, where I left it on the kitchen table before I went to bed. The next morning, desperate for coffee, I staggered into the kitchen. My magazine was gone. I found it on the living room floor, the page severely bent, the hand lotion near by. My fiancé had jerked off to my story. That was when I told myself I didn’t need to be afraid. If he liked my story enough to do this, then I had to be doing something right. There was no bogeyman in the porn aisle. If this is where my writing was taking me, there must be a reason. Screw the whole good girl, bad girl thing. I wasn’t going to censor myself.
