Yes, I know, I'm late... But it's not my fault, I've been ripping my hair out trying to pick the winner of the short story contest! No kidding, the entries were all so good (and several came in right on deadline) that it took me until today to finally figure it out. In the end, though, we had enough entries to justify two winners and an honorable mention, see below for all the juicy details! So, given the delay, I'll leave off my usual "From The Editor" rant and skip right to the good parts. We've got a great issue this week; in addition to the contest winners, we have an article on "Getting In The Mood When You're Not" by Sharon Wren, a review by Kevin Tipple and some great market listings. Now I'm off to finish up some work and get ready for our trip to New Mexico later this week... As usual, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch! Katy

But finally, after much turmoil, I managed to make a decision... First place ($25 and an e-book of his choice) goes to Al Dente for his story "To Protect and To Serve." His writing is professional and I'm sure he's got a future in porn writing. Second place ($5 and an ebook of her choice) goes to JoAnne Whisper for "Neighborhood Watch." What I liked about this story was the narrator's attitude. And honorable mention (e-book of choice) goes to Terry Yves' "Sacrifice." Worshipping at the altar of orgasm, indeed.... You can read all these great stories (and previous ones as well) at the Winner's Page. (After you click on the story title, you'll have to scroll down, they're all on one page.) I had a great time reading all your stories! And we'll do it all again in October... ===========================================
It never fails. You have an erotica story that’s due, or a great idea for a scene and you run for the computer before your muse decides to leave for the day. Just when you put fingers to keyboard…”MOM!” Reality intrudes. Personally I have a hard time getting “in the mood” when the kids are around. True, my boys are too young to read but someday they’ll be able to peer over my shoulder and say, “Mama, what does S&M mean?” Unlike other kinds of writing, you really need to be in the proper frame of mind to create erotica. Here are five tips for getting down to business. 1) Get the kids out from underfoot. It’s hard to think of a new synonym for having sex with the theme from “Blues Clues” in the background. “Kai” can’t write with constant interruptions. “Inspiration for me consists of no kids, no partner.” Then there’s every erotica writing parent’s worst nightmare - one of the kids sneaks up to see what you’re writing! Send them outside, over to Grandma’s house or pop in a video. If Grandma wants to know why you want the kids out of the way, tell her you’re going to wax the floor. If you can’t send them somewhere, work during naptime or when they’re in bed. 2) Set out some mood enhancing props. Many writers prefer to work with background music and erotica writers are no exception. I have a CD with an 18-minute version of “Bolero” and that works pretty well. Take a nice bubble bath, light some candles, maybe wear something sexy. Office workers wear suits, why can erotica writers wear lingerie? Put some sex toys on your desk – why tap a pen when you can tap a vibrator? This approach works every time for author Lisa Bishop. "When I'm at a loss for mood and I have to get a erotica story complete, I get out the CD player and put on Andreas Bocelli's “Romanza”, light some candles and take a nice bubble bath in the dark with just the candlelight and the sensuous crooning of Bocelli. Complete with bath pillow, I lie back and consider my characters and where I'm stuck, how I could make a variation on a theme. By the time I'm donned in a satin nighty, the words start to flow and my hands are racing at the keyboard to keep up! Then I'm at the computer until the story's either done or I have to go in search of my dearest husband. Trust me, you don't want to know what I have to do when I get writer's block!" That leads right into the next hint… 3) Have sex. There’s nothing like a quickie to get the erotic writing juices flowing. Either solo sex or with a partner will work. Try to do it so it relates to your project – masturbation will get you in the right frame of mind for a story on dildos. Be careful using this approach though – if you’re working on an orgy scene, it’ll be hard to line up that many people on short notice. 4) Think (or talk) “dirty”. Valerie Cann says, “I don't do the chat thing anymore but when I wanted to write erotic or just romance, I'd hunt up one of my buddies who would "chat" with me and have a rip roaring chat. Of course I would record it. Then if I needed scenery I'd go to bemine.com and look through the secret places part to get some vivid pictures of romantic bedrooms and other places.” There are many egroups for erotica writers and you may be able to find someone there to help you brainstorm. 5) Read erotica. Leafing through an erotica book or magazine will not only get you in the mood, but may help your writing. You might run into a new synonym for vagina that you’ve never heard before. Read a piece that isn’t similar to what you’re writing so that elements of what you’ve read don’t show up in what you write. It’s hard to believe sometimes, but writing erotica at home can be done. Pamper your muse with these tips and she’ll reward you with endless ideas – we hope! --- Sharon Wren is a freelance writer who has been writing online for over five years. Sincerely, Jennifer Blake Editor MOONLIT BOOKS: SUBMISSION GUIDELINES WHAT DO WE PUBLISH? Gay and Lesbian Romances
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? Originality. Emotions. Depth. We don't have a formula because frankly, we don't like them. We don't want you to read a straight male/female romance and copy its style, turning Troy McCoy and Lisa Sweet into Troy McCoy and Hank E. Pank. We want to read about characters who are memorable, three-dimensional beings. People to fall in love with. You must be in love with your main characters, quite literally. If you're not, how could your reader ever be? And that's where the rules end, because we want you to send us stories as varied as they can possibly be. Let your imagination run wild. You'll find us open to all good writing. If you're unsure, just send us an preliminary e-mail. Or, just go ahead and send the first three chapters. We like to be surprised! WHAT DO WE NOT PUBLISH? Gore and pornography. Horror need not be gory. Sensual, sexy writing is not pornography! ROYALTIES Authors receive 50% of the net download price (after Paypal transaction fees) of their work. If we get a book listed by other online stores as well, the author receives 50% of the profit made from such transactions. Royalties are paid out quarterly if a total amount of US$50 has accumulated, and our authors receive quarterly account statement, so they can keep track of all their sales. BOOKCOVERS We believe that just as a buyer is more likely to pick up and sample a printed book in a store if it has an appealing, eye-catching cover, so will the virtual shopper/reader be more likely to take a closer look at an e-book. MoonlitBooks.com provide a service not usually offered by e-publishers: we will design a personalized cover for your book to appear on our website beside details of your work, as well as to be part of the downloaded product. We provide this service free to our authors! Should you possess an image you would like us to use for your book cover, please e-mail it to us for approval. Note that you must be the owner of that image or have the owner's permission to use the image for commercial purposes. If any person is depicted in your image, you will have to provide a model release form signed by the subject. (E-mail us for details about this if you're uncertain.) AUTHOR DETAILS If we should publish your book, we'll need a brief bio for your Author's Page - a page at our site just for you to connect with your readers - as well as for your book. Send us this bio, one or several paragraphs long, with your submission. If you've been published before in any medium, you'll definitely want to mention this here. A photo (we accept virtually any file format) would be nice too - it helps make a connection between author and reader. It's up to you whether you wish to use a pseudonym or your own name, but be sure to use your real world name in all communications with us. The place for your pseudonym is below the title of your attached submission, nowhere else. We'll need a summary of your submission (max. 200 words). That's a teaser for us as well as for future potential readers and will be the digital equivalent of your book's 'blurb'. Avoid giving away too much. Remember that you want to entice someone to read the whole story! FORMATS PUBLISHED We don't publish category romances, so we don't expect you to stick to a fixed word count. But please, do let us know the word count of your submission, so we can better fit it into our review process. Note that aside from your previous publishing credits, your book's popularity and numerous other factors (such as winding up on a bestseller list), the word count will influence the download price for your work. We will accept the following for publication/sale: Novellas: 20,000 - 60,000 words Novels: 60,000 words and over We do not currently accept poetry. All our e-books are published as .PDF files, because this format provides good author protection (copying and changing passages is harder than in .HTML and .TXT, for example) and it is readable on virtually any type of computer and e-book reading device. SUBMISSIONS All submissions must be e-mailed to us! Send your submissions as .rtf (Rich Text File) attachments. Word, Word Perfect or any other format will not be opened. If you are unable to send us an .rtf file, please e-mail us to arrange an alternative. Please be sure to send us only the following in the first instance: within the body of your e-mail - your bio, a summary of the work, and the word count; attached, send the first three chapters. Some important notes regarding manuscript formatting: unlike most print publishers, we want you to submit your work without paragraph indents. The text must be single-spaced, but with double-spacing between paragraphs and clearly marked chapter separations. If you use MS Word or a comparable program, be sure to turn off smart quotes and widow/orphan control - they wreak havoc when turning your manuscript into a rich text file. Use a legible True Type Font, and format your manuscript with a header containing the title of your work, your name and the page number. At this stage, you can expect to hear from us regarding your submission within one week. We will let you know if we'd like you to send the entire manuscript. WHAT RIGHTS DO WE BUY? Exclusive electronic publishing rights. You enter into a contract with us which allows us to sell your work in digital/e-book format. This leaves you free to sell print, film and any other rights to another interested party. You, as well as MoonlitBooks.com, are free to cancel the contract at any time, with a month's notice to allow us to complete current transactions and withdraw the book from online stores. Please note that even after your contract with us is terminated, you may not allow publication of your book in the exact package you get from us, namely you may not use the product we sell for you, including our custom-designed cover, interior illustrations and formatting. A NOTE ABOUT COPYRIGHT Copyright is protected by the rules of the Berne Convention. It is with you the moment you set down text on paper. If you wish further protection of your rights (which is highly recommended), it is up to you to register your work for copyright with the appropriate organization for your geographical location - this may be a copyright office, writer's guild or similar body. We also advice that you register for copyright with the US Copyright Office (at the US Library of Congress) - this is a simple process for which you'll find online forms at their website: http://www.loc.gov/copyright. Please note that MoonlitBooks.com and its owner, Alienbeings, are not responsible for the protection of your copyright. While we will take every reasonable precaution to protect your work, we cannot be held liable for any copyright infringement or theft of your work. MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS You may submit as many manuscripts to us as you wish, as long as each submission is e-mailed separately and includes a synopsis, author bio and the first three chapters. SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS We accept simultaneous submissions. However, please be sure to inform us immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere and you no longer want us to consider it. LINKING TO YOUR WORK If you have a web site, feel free to link to the page at our site which features your work. This means more potential income for you as people click through. (We give you a personalized banner to match your book cover.) REVISIONS We believe that changes beyond spelling and minor grammar flaws are best carried out by the author, and we know authors prefer it that way as well. We will advise you if any changes are necessary for us to accept your submission. If we would like to publish your work but it needs extensive editing, we may offer the option of our editing service, at a charge. If your submission is rejected outright, we will not enter into any discussion. We may, however, offer a critique, if we would be interested in a revised version of your submission. LAST BUT NOT LEAST Please don't just write what you know! Let your imagination run wild. Some excellent authors of gay romances are women, and vice versa! Romance is a matter of the heart, not of gender. HOOT ISLAND SUBMISSIONS Wanna see your silly smut here? What are you, crazy? Good, that's a start. Hoot Island is proud to archive the largest collection of funny erotica on the web, and we'd love to see what you have to offer. Here's what you need to know. WHAT WE WANT:
WHAT WE DON'T WANT:
Humor based on cruelty or humiliation, stories involving non-consensual sex - we're interested in people who think sex is fun, not people who get their kicks manipulating others. So no mind-control stories, no injuries, no abasement. Note that this doesn't eliminate BD/SM stories, just the cruel ones. Humor based on bigoted, discriminatory or racist opinions - sorry, doesn't work for me. Underage sex - no minors. Not to say that there aren't some great memoirs and "How I Lost My Cherry" stories, and there are some funny books involving underage sex (Tim Sandlin's Skipped Parts comes to mind), but we'd rather err on the side of caution. Work which is copyrighted by someone other than you - must be your work, and you must have the ability to grant reproduction rights. If you're under 18, you must have parental permission. Anything that libels or slanders anyone else - if you're not sure, ask. HOW WE WANT IT:
Alternately, if you have your work already posted online at your own site or elsewhere, you can send me the URL and I can get it from there. I'd prefer the e-mail, though, as it ensures that the right person is submitting it and that it's in the final author-approved version. Send submissions to submit@hootisland.com, with "Submission" in the subject line. Please include your name, the name you want the work attributed to, an author's bio (100 words or less, and you can include URLs if you want), and any other information I should know. At the bottom, please include a copy of the following, with your initials added: I hereby give permission to Hoot Island to publish my work if accepted, and to be archived. I acknowledge the work submitted is solely my own and that I am over 18 years of age. I understand Hoot Island holds no rights to my work, save those of publication and archival, and I understand that Hoot Island will remove my work at any time should I ask. I understand Hoot Island serially copyrights the Hoot Island Web site, including my work, but will not become party to private copyright suits or disputes. I give Hoot Island permission to excerpt or advertise my work or bio information for purposes of promotion, and to edit my bio or submission as needed, per my approval. I understand Hoot Island retains the right to choose not to publish my work, or remove my work for any reason at any time whatsoever at the editors discretion. ___ (Initial) Depending on what you're submitting, here's some specifics. ************************************************** If so, please consider making a Order your voluntary subscription Here ============================================ One of the things that creates a more difficult job reviewing books, is when I overall like the book, but the copy I read is full of grammar flaws, misspellings, and missing words. Such things represent a real problem because the stories themselves may work and appeal to the reader. But, if the reader is constantly jolted by obvious typos, misspellings and sentences missing words, then the overall enjoyment is substantially diminished. Such is the case, unfortunately, with this interesting collection. The supernatural dominates approximately half the book, with realism dominating the other half. Both halves are bound by lust and desires as well as a theme of acceptance of one’s own desires or the desires of another. Several of these tales do not subscribe to the “happily ever after” style of writing and instead, serve more as cautionary tales. While the erotic is always present, most of the work is less about the erotic and more designed to make the reader think. With the book separated into two distinct visions, the fantasy section opens the work and from the first story titled “Pulled Over” the reader is exposed to something a lot different from the normal erotica. For example, in the story a cop pulls over a woman that was speeding. She complies with stopping her vehicle but is very uncooperative when questioned by the officer. Despite her attitude, the officer is strangely attracted to her. Maybe because she is apparently some kind of demon and has the ability to control his mind. In the other section, aptly titled “Realism” accepting one’s own desires and the ramifications in those desires is paramount. For example, in the story titled “The First Time I Saw Theresa,” the primary character Monica is almost instantly attracted to her. Monica finds Theresa beautiful and arousing. But, is that because her long-term relationship with Brad is on the skids or is it because she has been denying who she really is? If she is a lesbian what does that say about her and how will others perceive her? But, while the stories are interesting and the issues presented often quite complex, the major problem with the book is readability. The e-book copy I received had numerous grammatical and spelling errors sprinkled throughout the work. For example; “Raften nude body was positioned right beside me.” Later in the work, “Mother span around from the stove.” Additionally, on occasion sentences as written did not make sense because apparently words had been left out Sometimes the errors were a combination of things such as in this example closer to the end of the book. “She waived and tilted her head to the side, like she always when she thoughts she was being cute.” Unfortunately, these problems repeated themselves constantly throughout the book. Certainly, it is possible that my review copy is the only one filled with these errors of various types. However, that is very unlikely and even if true, would not promote a positive reflection on the publisher involved. While my overall impression of the work was favorable, the lack of polish in grammar, spelling, etc. definitely downgraded the appeal of the book. While the book is interesting and the stories are intriguing, the problems noted above, make this an average read at best. ========================================== "Demerits" by Jolie du Pre' appears in the Lesbian section of Adult Story Corner at www.adultstorycorner.com . --- From Andrea Dale: I won First Prize in the Hoot Island Flash Contest, which I read about here in your newsletter. --- Danielle Smith is the Author-of-the-Month at Amoret Online. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
