From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================================

I'm going to keep this fairly short and sweet this week (for me, anyway) as I am hip-deep in deadlines; some porn, some not. I haven't had this much work in awhile, but I'm not complaining.

The big news is that not only has Spring Sprung (here in Colorado that means it was 65 degrees on Thursday, 25 degrees and white-out blizzard conditions on Friday and 50 degrees and sunny on Saturday...go figure) but that it's also time for the short story contest! Check out all the details below...

For new subscribers, don't miss the new Resources Page or the new Articles Page - both pages are full of helpful info for writers.

Thanks! to those of you who contributed a voluntary subscription of $5 to help defray web costs and make and keep this a paying market! You can see who's contributed on the Supporter's Page and you can make your own contribution on the Order Page.

In this issue we've got Kevin Tipple's Book Review column, an article from Sascha Illyvich on self publishing, three great market listings, a good Goings On and lots of information concerning what to do with deadbeat publishers and writing for gay markets in Q and A.

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

--- The Art of Self-Publishing ---
--- By Sascha Illyvich ---
===========================================

With the advent of the Internet, many authors have begun to take advantage of the technology available for self-publishing. True, it’s quicker; acceptance comes easier since you’re the one calling all the shots, but is it really worth it?

The first thing one needs to understand about selling books on your own is that it requires lots of time and dedication in order to market your work. I’d say a minimum of all your free time should be dedicated to marketing. You will have to remember that your results are going to be very minimal at first. In fact, you may want to ask for reviews and give away a "few" copies just for review purposes, so you can put the reviews on your site. People learn about your literature through word of mouth, i.e., my press releases I've posted on various writers lists a few times.

Once you've committed yourself to the marketing portion, you'll want to set up some service such as Pay Pal that lets you take credit card transactions online. They charge a minimum fee of about .30 cents per transaction so you will have to pay for selling your books, however, the return is much greater.

If your book is in electronic format, that doesn’t mean it can be sold any more easily than if you had a print book. People are very skeptical of e-books still. Many would rather hold onto something. However, by putting your book online in an e-format you can reach a greater audience. For example, the large tech sector likes to read books on their PDA’s. Keep in mind that E-books have just as much a difficult time being marketed, especially poetry. Unlike me, try to avoid that until you've established yourself as a writer. I hate to have to say that, since I write tons of erotic/romance poetry, but it's the hard truth.

The Internet has a plethora of resources for those who wish to self publish. Try About.com for starters, under the Writers category. My article on Self Promotion through Discussion Lists can be found at http://www.fictionaddiction.net/illyvich.html. For copyright information (because you will want to protect your work) point your browser here: http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/

I will state that I don’t believe the world market is ready for the E-book yet, and I don’t entirely agree with POD publishers but both topics are up for different articles. Self-publishing can be done but it’s tough. I would also recommend “The Secrets of Our Success” by MJ Rose and Angela Adair-Hoy. In particular, chapter 6 has a great deal of information on self-publishing and what steps are necessary to get started.

If all of this scares you, it’s okay. It can be quite overwhelming. You’re a writer so you’re used to it. Take a deep breath, relax and get busy!

Sascha has been a regular contributor to the Erotica Readers Association for the past two years, which has helped Sascha's writing career, even spawing an E-book of erotic poetry. "Erotic Flowers," Sascha says, is about women. Sascha has also written a few basic writing articles. Sascha enjoys the lyrical stylings of Serj Tankian and uses Serj's words as inspiration for Tanka poetry.

We cannot accurately locate back issues based only on such identification as a story title or picture on the cover or the story's subject matter.

Also, visit our website. There are always sample stories available to the public to read. And by visiting the archive page (http://www.variations.com/archive.html), you can view a list of our common categories. Submit a complete manuscript along with a cover letter indicating it is a professional freelance submission.

SUBSCRIPTIONS: Send a check or money order for $30 to P.O. Box 420235, Palm Coast, FL 32142-0235, or with your credit card in hand, call 1-800-437-1626 from the U.S. & Canada. Elsewhere in the world call (904) 445-4662 (ask for customer service) between 8am-midnight M-F or weekends from 9am-7pm EST. Closed holidays. Canadian and foreign orders cost $45 (includes GST).
CURRENT NEEDS: Variations purchases 3000-word, first-person narratives of erotic experience within a specific category which is described as an earnest contribution to a couple's sexual lifestyle.
PAYMENT: Payment for an accepted, fully revised manuscript is up to $400.00. Also, one contributor's copy is mailed to each author of a featured story upon publication.
WORD COUNT: Manuscripts should be about 3,000-3,500 words and include two sex scenes focused on a single category of sexuality.
REPRINTS: No.
HINTS: Although Variations does not publish short stories or fiction styles per se, we do run couple-oriented narrative pieces in which a person fully describes his or her favorite sex scenes within one of our usual categories, in highly explicit erotic detail, using the best possible language.

Unfortunately, when some people write about sex, they slip into some sort of porn jingo or baby talk. Don't dumb down to us. Instead, write intelligently about sex. Tell us how and why your characters are enjoying it. We want to hear all of the details about what makes it so passionate, sexy, interesting and fun.

Variations does not purchase photographs or poetry. We are not interested in negativity, jealousy, cheating, crimes, anyone under 21, relatives, pets or coercion.

Most importantly, read the magazine to familiarize yourself with our voice, style and categories. Write about what you're familiar with and the most comfortable discussing. We're looking for focused pieces which are carefully crafted by excellent writers.

GALATEA MAGAZINE: Galatea magazine is a full-color monthly print journal of erotica scheduled for launch in July of 2002. We are currently open to submissions in the following categories: short fiction, flash fiction, poetry, photography and other artwork. We pay upon publication and guarantee to send you five copies of Galatea along with your payment. CONTACT: Mike Duron.

Short Ficton: We need stories from 2,500 to 4,000 words long. Any subject or style will be read and considered. Please email your submission in the body of a plain-text email to galatea-fiction@satx.rr.com and inlude your real name and street address in the text of your message. Payment is $150 plus five copies. You may submit as many times as you wish but, please, only one piece per email.

Flash Fiction: Flash should be between 100 and 200 words long. Submissions should be made just as stated above for longer fiction, however, the words "Flash Fiction" should appear in the subject line of the submission. Payment for flash is $85 plus five copies.

Poetry: Poetry can be written in either open or closed form, we have no preference. What matters is quality and impact. If you wish, you may include your poetry submission in the body of your email or you may include it as a zipped Word attachment. If the attachment is not zipped, the sub will be rejected without being read! Payment for poetry is $50 per poem plus five copies (per contributor). You may submit as many times as you wish but, please, do not submit more than five poems with every email. Send your submissions to:

galatea-poetry@satx.rr.com

Photography/Artwork: Please send a compressed version of the images you wish to have considered to galatea-art@satx.rr.com We welcome anything we can get! Payment for each piece used is $85 plus five copies per accepted contributor.

I will consider reprints so long as the writer has the rights to the piece. I buy one-time publication rights and the right to make the piece available indefinitely in the online archives of the magazine (a website that has not been set up yet, btw).

Regarding fiction: All the elements of excellent short fiction should be present (i.e., Character Development, Character Shift, Symbolism , Irony, Plot, Etc.). Galatea is a magazine of contemporary erotica, not pornography. If an editor can delete all the sex scenes from your story and still have a story worthy of a reader's interest, yet, if your story is sexually charged with all the sex scenes left in it - if it doesn't smell of formaldehyde and mothballs ala 'Lit-Rag Lit' - then it's erotica and just what Galatea wants! If all that's left after a sex-scene edit is a procession of shallow characters shuffling aimlessly through a series of boring 'linking' scenes, then you have a piece of pornography and Galatea is not interested but wishes you luck in finding a market....

*And* - I really need artwork, photographs and poetry!! I will consider anything erotic and am really trying to find powerful artists and poets with something original to say.

BEST AMERICAN EROTICA:

The Best American Erotica started in 1993, and is the best-selling collection of its kind.

The new editions of BAE come out each February. Stories chosen for each year's anthology are selected from material published the previous year.

For the next BAE I'm editing, the material selected may be published anytime between March 1, 2001 and March 1, 2002.

The content and style of The Best American Erotica is wide-ranging. The work may have been published any place, in any form: from the Internet to traditional print, from self-published to mass market.

If you believe your work fits the criteria or you would like to nominate someone whose work does, you are welcome to send a copy of the published story to us for consideration.

Please send a paper (NO EMAIL) copy of the story to the following address:
Susie Bright
POB 8377
Santa Cruz, CA 95061

Include a statement of where and when it was published, and any copyright or contributor info if you have it. You can also send a photocopy of the story as it appeared in print, along with the date of the publication, and its masthead or copyright page. Please send manuscript copies of ALL web-published stories, because what you see not always what you get. Thanks for your interest and support.

============================================
Raven’s Black, Robin’s Not
By Jay Hughes
ISBN # 1-929670-97-4
(http://www.renebooks.com)

“When you win the lottery and tell your boss to fuck off, you look around for things to do.” So opens the latest Jay Hughes e-novel from Renaissance E Books. The read is enjoyable and a pleasant change from some of his other works for this reviewer. That might be because this novel is a more serious work or it might be because after lots of e-mail correspondence with the author, I have a better understanding of what he was trying to accomplish in his various works. While either factor could have tilted my thinking in regards to this work, I do feel that on its own merits, this is simply a better book.

As the novel begins, Jay Hughes has won thirty million dollars. With plenty of time on his hands, he meets Amy Beebe in the lobby of the local Civil Defense building. Amy is 23 and quickly takes a liking to the 47-year-old Jay. They seem to have a connection and the money has nothing to do with it. One tends to think of the “soul mate” connection bandied about so much today in the pop psychology circles, but that would be trivializing their connection.

As he begins dating Amy, his ex-wife, Ruby, shows up at his small home. Ruby was convinced he was cheating on her before the marriage and divorced him. Later, after he won the lottery, she felt like she was cheated out of her rightful share. They have a love/hate relationship, but right now she needs his help. Susan, their daughter, is missing.

Susan has her own problems and then some. Susan “. . . grew up, ran off with a guy from Denver, got pregnant, became a mother at seventeen, turned into a junkie at eighteen, and, at nineteen proclaimed with pride that she had made her first adult movie.”

Soon after, Ruby and Jay were divorced and while Susan was part of that problem, there were many other factors at work as well. Jay still loves Susan, but she chose her own road, and does not think he can do anything more to help her.

Ruby prevails on him to begin searching for his daughter. On one hand he wants to do so and at the same time he resents her for wasting her life as well as becoming a problem when he wants to focus on his possible relationship with Amy. As he deals with Amy and their growing relationship, Jay must also prowl the strip clubs, fighting back temptation, as he searches for his daughter. The stakes steadily rise as he wonders more and more; just exactly whom he can trust and whether they just want his money.

This is an enjoyable novel and an interesting mystery. It is a very erotic adult novel combining complex character development, relationships, and sex to create a very good read. While containing quite a lot of very graphic sex, the novel is more about human relationships and moving on, while understanding the past.

I have a few publication announcements. My poem, The History Of Wanting, will appear in the April edition of Cleansheets.com. ===========================================
--- Q & A ---
=============================================

Our Q & A last week garnered a couple of interesting responses. I had written:

"For example, I'm not a gay male. (Nor am I 18, or a lesbian or any other of the myriad characters I write about.) So when I decided to start writing gay porn, I was kind of stumped. While I've had several gay friends, I had no idea what was going on in their minds (or their bedrooms) when it came to sex. But, after reading a dozen or so stories from different perspectives, I had a pretty clear idea of the dynamics of the 'typical' gay relationship. (Yes, I realize how ridiculous that sounds, but this is smut.)"

Editor Diana Sheridan (Young and Tight, Cherry Boys and many, many others) subscribes to the newsletter and was kind enough to respond...

"Katy does a fine job indeed of writing as a gay male. I read the above in her last issue and wanted to comment. Katy sells to me consistently because she writes well, needs a mininum of editing, writes as a believable gay male (or whatever she is pretending to be), and doesn't always write the same tired scenarios.

Thank you, Katy...and the rest of you could take a lesson from her...which, in fact, is precisely why you're subbed to her newsletter, isn't it?!"

Needless to say, that made my day!

Another reader expounded on the 'straight author writing gay stories' theme and asked this question...

I do wonder how editors at gay publications feel about straight writers who submit articles to their publications without revealing their sexual orientation. How have you dealt with this? What kind of feedback do you get from gay editors? I recently was looking at a market for a gay travel magazine - and was not sure if I should apply there or not. My best friends are gay, I think I understand the culture enough to do a good job - but I don't know how the editor would feel if it came out I am straight.

In my experience this is not usually too much of an issue. Many of the magazines that cater to gays, especially the digests and story mags, don't care what the author's orientation is, they just want good stories. However, there are some publications that are more geared toward gay "issues," and they may prefer authors of a similar sexual persuasion. Check out your intended market, read their guidelines and if you're not sure, don't be afraid to ask.

In response to the question about when to take a publisher to collections - by the way, that particular author was paid the next week - Brandi Jasmine (www.brandijasmine.com) wrote...

"I think I can be blunt ... We all like screwing but not getting screwed, right? This is a business, not a popularity contest. Being more likeable will not get you more work, or ensure your invoices are paid on time.

It's really simple. Do what the cable, phone and hydro companies do! ... Send the client a new invoice each month, reminding them that they are behind, if it is a corporate-type publisher. 99.999% of deadbeat-ism on the corporate level comes down to incompetence in payables or a crappy accounting system (I used to work for a corporation that to this day I think was the template for "Dilbert"). On the third invoice, warn them they are heading for collections if the overdue amount is not paid.

If it is a small publisher or there is no invoice, email them every 30 days. Call if you feel the emails are being ignored - I usually say I am calling to ask them if they got my email - because I know email is not 100% reliable. That gives them a way of saving face if they need it. I would give any client three months to make good before going to collections - then at that point I would warn them that if they don't pay, that I will have to consider my legal options. I have never had to go that far with a standard one-off freelance deal (though my self-syndicated horoscope column, that's another story ... grr ...).

I have a friend who runs a trade show business. He sends his deadbeats to collections the second they default. Not one day's grace. I thought he was going to do himself out of business, but the level of professionalism amongst his clients has greatly improved and his business keeps growing year after year. What he does is weed out the deadbeats, who cost him more than their business is worth. The clients he keeps adore him, because he's a joy to work with as long as you are professional - and as he says, part of being professional is sticking to your end of the bargain. I have learned by watching him that the world will not end, I won't stop getting business, if I make a firm policy about payment and stick to it. I may lose a few clients, but only those who cost me more than it is worth to do business with them."

---

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
