It's been another busy couple of weeks around here... My main accomplishment is the new Resources Page where I've compiled resources for writers of all persuasions. There are books on writing erotica, books on general writing, one (so far) erotica title and a magazine for writers. There are also links to some fun sites, like a video/toy/lingerie store, a classy vintage erotica site and even a site that carries erotic food. Check it out and let me know what you think! Also, feel free to tell me what else you're looking for. Thanks so much to all who have contributed a voluntary subscription. The list of supporters is up Here We still need more contributors so that we can keep the newsletter a paying market, as well as to pay for advertising for more subscribers and increase our contest payouts. If you'd like to help out, you can order your subscription on the Order Page We've got a bunch of good stuff in this issue. An article on writing "Humor Porn" by Sharon Wren, a great success story from a reader, three good market listings, plus three great questions in Q & A. As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch! Katy

So you want to write funny erotica, or what I call "humor porn." You watch "Sex And The City" and think, "I can do that." You know more Viagra jokes than any of your friends. You can't stop laughing at cheesy pornos long enough to become aroused. My friend, you may be ready. What do you need to write humor porn? Well, to be honest, it helps if you' ve had sex at least a few times. True, you don't need a science degree to write about stem cell research but sex is different. It's one of those subjects you really need to experience in order to write about effectively. It's like trying to write about making brioche when you hurt yourself opening a loaf of Wonder bread. The other thing you need is a sense of humor. This may seem like a "duh", but there are many people out there who try to write humor but are about as funny as a broken condom. If you think you need help in that department, read books on the subject and practice. If you need help with the other one, go to the bookstore, buy a copy of "Sex For Dummies" and practice. Let's say you're not a virgin and you've written some stuff that's funny. You're ready to try humor porn. You can't start writing until you find a topic. You may not think so at first, but sex is full of funny moments. Have you ever gotten a leg cramp while trying a new position? Did the kids find your handcuffs and take them to school for Show and Tell? Did you have to brush your teeth to get rid of the last of the edible condom? These are all situations that can be turned into hilarious essays. If you need further proof, watch any porno. The acting is usually bad, the plots are cheesy and the looks on the actors' faces as they reach orgasm are hysterical. The casting is funny too - the women are gorgeous but the men often look like they've crawled out from under a rock. Now that you have an idea, it's time to sit down and write. Crank out a first draft, let it sit for a couple hours and take a look at it. Are there enough references to sex that readers won't mistake it for a mildly racy Dave Barry column? For example, my first humor porn article was on an "adult" home party I attended. The hostess described one vibrator as being "perfect for coffee breaks at work". That image was funny enough, but I spiced it up by writing about the improbability of someone using a vibrator while leaning against the Coke machine in the lounge. Next, read your work over to see if there's enough humor that it won't be mistaken for a Playgirl Fantasy Forum. For example, I was working on a Cyber Mistress column about the G spot when my editor told me about the M spot. My first reaction was "what is this, sexual Sesame Street, with the letter of the day?" The image was so irresistibly crazy that I worked in a scene with Dr. Ruth Muppetheimer and "Big" Bird. That article will never be confused with a Fantasy Forum. Don't just throw erotic terms or jokes into your story though. Like any other element, they need to fit the story. You don't want them to stand out like a hard-on at church. For example: "It had been one of those days - the dishwasher went on strike, the raccoons thought the garbage was an invitation to dinner and my Avon lady moved to Uzbekistan and changed her name. Then my husband screwed me and brought me to the most amazing orgasm. That was when I remembered the PTA bake sale." The sex seems to be just thrown in, like a bag of M&Ms at checkout. In the movies, they would call this a "gratuitous sex scene" and it should be avoided in writing. It works the same with adding humor too. For example: "Armondo crushed Catherine in his strong embrace, his manhood pressing against her and promising a night of rapture they would never forget. Of course, that was the precise moment that the timer went off on the oven, signaling that the brownies were done. Catherine's breasts were heaving with desire." The brownie line doesn't fit, does it? One minute you have the makings of a bodice-ripper, then domestic humor pops in and then the bodice-ripper comes back. A good rule of thumb is to add humor or erotica only when it fits the story and adds something. If you're ever in doubt, let the piece sit for a while and reread it. With humor porn, your goal should be an article that has the reader giggling all the way to the bedroom. We all know that sex is natural and good for your well being. Now we can laugh at it too. For both the humor writer and the erotica writer, humor porn is a new challenge. It can be a new source of revenue and is just plain fun. Just don't make the mistake of asking your sweetie to hold that position while you make some quick notes. ---

With her permission, of course...) Dear Ms. Terrega, I wanted to write and thank you for the inspirational and informative newsletter that you provide. In your most recent newsletter, Don Vaughn's article in The Non-Fiction Corner brought a smile to my face. For the majority of 2001 I was working to the bone in the most stressful job I've ever had. Over time it became apparent that I had to decide what was more important to me - a steady income from a job that was making me physically ill or the chance to see my dreams come true. Well, I finally cracked and, despite protest from family and close friends, took that risk last October. It was the best decision I ever made. While I am not earning nearly what I used to, I am writing non-stop with the energy, passion and creativity that was totally sucked dry in my last job. My future is uncertain (who's isn't?), but the feeling of peace and contentment that fills me now is enough to give me the piece of mind I was never afforded before. Sincerely, Anita Arora --- I wish Anita all the luck in the world and hope others can follow in her footsteps! ============================================

BEST GAY EROTICA 2003: Submissions are now being accepted for Best Gay Erotica 2003, to be published in November 2002 by Cleis Press, edited for the seventh year by Richard Labonte and judged this year by Michael Rowe (Queer Fear, Writing Below the Belt, Looking for Brothers). Deadline is May 25; maximum length is 5,000 words; work may be in the form of original fiction, memoir, diary, graphic art, performance art, theatre script, filmscript, or other non-poetry formats, or reprints of work, including excerpts from full-length novels or other forms, published in print or on the web, or performed, between August 2001 and July 2002. Winners will be notified in July. SCORCH: SOUTHERN EROTIC ANTHOLOGY: Essa Élan - essaelan@hotmail.com Call For Submissions: DEADLINE: March 31, 2002 Seeking original, unpublished erotic fiction from southern writers. Writers of the old south, new south, dirty south- it doesn’t matter as long as you identify as a southern writer. If you think magnolias smell like sex, ever called your lover "honey child," or say phrases like "fixin' tah," I definitely want to hear from you. New and established southern writers living in the south or in other parts of the world are welcome. Tell a rich and enticing story, full of gritty and perhaps humorous drama, hot (and possibly humid) sex, spicy complex characters, and, hopefully, shameful yet shameless perversions. It does not, however, need to occur in the south, or necessarily possess southern characters. It simply has to FEEL southern, so develop this idea based on what that means to you. Now, if you feel a need to include the typical scenes- like nookie in the outhouse- please don't be contrived about it. Keep it well-crafted, hot, sensual, and irresistible to read. I'm interested in all degrees of erotica, from vivid and somewhat explicit to subtle and suggestive. In other words, you can make mama blush or go ahead and make her faint. The choice is yours. *NOTE: I only want erotic fiction! PLEASE no poetry, no essays, no true-life memoirs (even if you do change the names). And here are some more rules: no sex with people under the age of 18 (a.k.a. statutory rape), no snuff porn, and no rape scenes intended to be erotic. In other words, no sex crimes. WORD LIMIT: 4,000 words PAY: To be determined, but at least $.025 per word. To submit, copy and paste your work into the body of an email. Make sure the text is in ASCII (plain text) text format so it will be easy to read. Please space between paragraphs. No attachments; emails with attachments will be deleted unread. At the beginning of your email include:
Also include a short cover letter that contains an explanation of why you consider yourself to be southern- but keep your cover letter under 200 words. I don’t need to know your previous publishing history at this time. If your work is selected, I will request full biographical info for inclusion in the anthology. Type "SCORCH SUBMISSION:" followed by the actual title of your work in the subject line of the email. Send questions & submissions to Essa Élan at essaelan@hotmail.com. If you would like an email receipt to acknowledge that I received your work, let me know and I will be happy to send one. I will notify all entrants by May 1, 2002. ************************************************** If so, please consider making a Order your voluntary subscription Here ========================================== SL Nelson writes: I sold two short stories and my novella "Hot to Trot" to the Web site Discipline & Desire, where it is currently running as a serial. Or order here - http://www.KatyTerrega.com/writersorderform.html =========================================== 1. Pen Names I don't know how this works. Do you have to register a pen name? If so, what is the procedure? How do you find out if the name already is being used? 2. Payment How long after acceptance and publication of a piece--or the stated payment date--should one wait before following up with the editor in question? How many chances should one give them? At what point can you pursue collection activities? Thanks for any help you can give me! Technically, you don't need to do anything when it comes to pen names. You just write it under your title as "By So and So" and voila, you're done. The editors will then send the check in your real name (which you have also provided.) Since we writers aren't bound by a union (the Actor's Guild, for example) that regulates names, we have a lot of free reign. Although I'm sure there would be legal problems if you chose to write under somebody else's psuedonym or name. If your business dictates it, for example, if you want to sell 'products' as well as writing, you could get a business license and use your pseudonym as a "Doing Business As" or "DBA." In this case you go down to your state offices, check the records for your business name (in my case that's "KT Entersprises",) pay your fee (usually $50) and add your pseudonym to the application. That allows you to get a bank account under your pseudonym and to receive payment under that name. This is not really necessary for the average freelancer, however. As to payment, if a market pays on publication you generally get your money somewhere between a week before and a week after the piece hits the stands (or the screen.) I wouldn't wait any longer than a month before asking questions, although I'd probably give them two weeks, due to billing schedules and such. I've never had to deal with collection activities, do any of you all have any suggestions on that? --- Another reader wrote: Hi, Katy, I have a question that has absolutely stopped work altogether on at least two stories that I thought might end up being rather good! I'm writing about D/s (Dominance/submission) scenes in a bdsm environment, and the characters are pretty well developed in the non-bdsm parts of the book, but as soon as I get into the bondage or other kinds of bdsm scenes, they go flat. This isn't for lack of experience on my part, as I've been a submissive for a long time. It's lack of experience from the Dominant side! And I don't know how to get into that mindset. I've tried expanding my real life experience to include being a Top, but it just didn't work. I had no idea what to do, just as I have no idea what to make my Dom do in the stories. Do I get a collaborator of the Top persuasion? --- While getting a collaborator is one option, I don't think it's really necessary. I think it would be better to find a way to get into your characters' heads, find out what makes them tick. You could talk to those of the dom persuasion but an easier method is to simply read everything you can get your hands on. For example, I'm not a gay male. (Nor am I 18, or a lesbian or any other of the myriad characters I write about.) So when I decided to start writing gay porn, I was kind of stumped. While I've had several gay friends, I had no idea what was going on in their minds (or their bedrooms) when it came to sex. But, after reading a dozen or so stories from different perspectives, I had a pretty clear idea of the dynamics of the 'typical' gay relationship. (Yes, I realize how ridiculous that sounds, but this is smut.) I'd suggest reading books and stories written by doms, that should give you all the information you need to write a believable story. --- Speaking of D/s - here's a site that defines that term and others - http://www.umkc.edu/sites/hsw/issues/para.html ---
Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)
=========================================== Send Me Your Stories And Ideas! I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like. Do you have a product or service that might interest over 900 (and growing) writers? Advertise here (six lines maximum) for only $5.00!
