From The Editor
Katy Terrega
=========================================

It's been a busy couple of weeks here...

I added a page to the site that includes many of the best articles from previous newsletters. You can check it out at http://www.katyterrega.com/articles.html. I hope to have more articles up by next issue.

I'm still working on a 'resources' page. Let me know what you'd like: More books on writing? More books featuring erotica? Products? Access to magazines? Just let me know and I'll try to have the page up by next issue. (Speaking of which, you can get 10% off if you order both of our new books; Suddenly Sexy and The Freelance Workbook. Check it out on the Order Page.)

Many thanks to those of you who have contributed a voluntary subscription of $5! Your payments will go towards paying article, review and contest contributors. We still need more subscribers to help keep this a paying market, however. If you feel this newsletter has helped you, please consider contributing via the Order Page While the "Supporters" page, which will feature a list of all contributors, is not quite done, that, too, will be up by next issue. (When contributing be sure to let me know if you'd like your real name or a psuedonym used.)

We've got an extra big issue this week including a review from Kevin Tipple of "Once Bitten," a fantastic novel by Adrian Hunter and Chelsea Shepard. We've also got four great market listings, another stellar article from Don Vaughan on non-fiction writing, market news concerning Obssessed, sad market news concerning BrilliantSmut, some great Goings On and a Q&A on characterization...

>Whew!<

As usual, enjoy the newsletter and please keep in touch!

===========================================
--- The Non-Fiction Corner ---
--- By Don Vaughan ---
===========================================

“I’d love to be a writer. I just can’t find the time.”

I’ve heard that refrain more times than I care to recall, and my response is always the same: “Then I guess you really don’t want to be a writer.”

I’m not trying to be cruel, just realistic. If you want to do something badly enough, you’ll find the time. And that’s especially true of writing. If all you ever do is talk about it, your dreams and aspirations will never come true. And you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.

A couple of years ago, on a Friday, I was asked to do a quick fix on a book about erectile dysfunction. The original author had come in horribly short on her word count (just slightly more than half of the contracted 60,000 words) and my editor asked if I could flesh it out. Fast. As in over the weekend, because the book was due in the publisher’s hands by the following Tuesday. I thought about it for a moment, then agreed to do the job. It seemed like an interesting challenge, and I wanted to see if I could actually pull it off. When the dust settled, I had written almost half a book in less than 72 hours.

How did I find the time? I didn’t -- I MADE the time.

On a normal work day, I wake up at 8 a.m., hit the computer around 9 and work until 5 p.m. or so. But I knew that schedule wouldn’t work in this particular case, so I did what I had to do. I crawled out of bed at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, fed the cat, grabbed a Coke and locked myself in my office, where I worked nonstop until around 3 p.m. I didn’t want to stop, but I had a social engagement that couldn’t be broken. I revved up the computer once again around 8 p.m. and worked until 11:30 p.m., when I forced myself to stop and get some sleep. I repeated the same schedule Sunday, working almost nonstop from 7:30 a.m. until 11 p.m., and again on Monday. My editor needed the final pages by 5 p.m. Monday afternoon -- and she got them.

All because I knew how to make the time.

Another example: I’ve recently doubled my work load by dividing my days in half. I spend my mornings researching one project (conducting interviews, going to the library, etc.) and the afternoons writing another. And as odd as it may sound, I’m actually able to get more work done on such a schedule than if I spent the entire day just researching or writing.

The reason, I think, is that I’m more focused. If I were to devote an entire day to doing research, much of my time would be taken up with unrelated tasks and general nonsense. But by making interviews a priority from 9 a.m. to noon, I’m able to focus completely on the task at hand. And the same goes for writing in the afternoons. Knowing I had a constructive morning frees me to concentrate exclusively on crafting an article. I’ve found this plan so effective that I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner!

As for those who can’t find the time, I have a few tips.

*Make writing a priority in your life, not something “you’ll get around to when you find the time.” If you’re like most people, you’ll never find the time, and your dreams will remain just that.

*Let everyone else know that writing has become a priority for you. This includes family and friends. Carve out a special time each day that’s just for you -- and use it. If you have children, ask your spouse to watch them while you write. Make it known that you won’t tolerate any interruptions. If you live alone, let the answering machine take any calls that come through while you’re working. There are few things in life that can’t wait an hour.

*How much writing can you get done in an hour? Probably a lot more than you think you can. But don’t sit there with a timer. When inspiration hits, run with it.

*If you can’t find any peace at home, go somewhere else to write. Many libraries rent time on their typewriters or computers. Or, if you have a laptop computer, write at your local park or beach. If you don’t have a laptop computer, go anyway and write long-hand. Do what you must to put words on paper.

*Be willing to make small sacrifices for the sake of your art. Get up an hour earlier and write before you go to work. Or write after work, even if it means missing a television show or two. That’s what VCRs are for.

*Be enthusiastic about your writing when talking with friends. Eventually they’ll come to realize that you’re serious and leave you alone.

*Cut out inspirational sayings about writing and tape them around your work station. Words of encouragement from someone who has been there can really help you over the rough spots.

*Take a creative writing class. That way, you can use the excuse of “homework” to grab some writing time at home.

*Attend writing conferences, seminars and conventions -- any activity that will allow you to talk to established writers and editors, as well as other beginners. A creative environment can quickly recharge your own creative batteries.

*Don’t take no for an answer. If you get rejected, remind yourself that it’s not a personal attack or a reflection upon your ability. Try to learn something from the rejection letter (if you get one), then immediately get your article or story in the mail to someone else. Success comes only to those who persevere.

Kevin's Book Review Corner
===========================================
Once Bitten
By Adrian Hunter and Chelsea Shepard
www.adrianhunter.com
ISBN # 1-4010-2885-3 (trade paperback)
ISBN # 1-4010-2886-1 (e-book)

They say money can’t buy happiness, but that isn’t the way Donovan Grant sees it. Donovan is rich, if not super-rich. He has amassed a fortune from his invention that protects the copyright of videos through the Internet. Hollywood execs have been thrilled and paid very well to use his technology while the same people who approved of the Napstar style tactics are horrified and disgusted. So, he has taken his money and purchased his own private island in the British Virgin Island, named the Jost Van Dyke.

Every now and then, he goes off of his island for a little while and drifts into the bar known as the Krusty Conch. There, he never knows what he might pick up in female entertainment and what they might allow him to do. As the novel opens, he meets the very drunk Michelle and her equally smashed friend, Debbie. He is having a good time with them and sexual desires, among other things, are briefly discussed, before Michelle suddenly remembers where she has seen the famous Donovan Grant before. After arguing the issue with him, she has had enough and wants to leave. “Debbie pretended not to hear her soon-to-be-ex best friend as her internal search engine spat up metatag matches to keywords like ‘single,’ ‘cute,’ and, to her thrilling surprise, ‘kinky.’” Soon Debbie is off with Donovan and headed quickly back to his island.

Having your own private island is wonderful on its own, especially when you like domination and bondage. With his privacy and his resources, he is able to construct his own bondage fantasy world. In pleasuring himself, he also brings pleasure to millions who visit his sites daily through the Internet, via his free and paying sites. But, it still isn’t enough. He has come up with a program that by taking advantage of his millions of users will help him dominate the world through the Internet.

At the same time, half a world away a young woman by the name of Carol Farmer is having another unsatisfactory bondage experience. While the man bound and writhing on the bed beneath her is trying his hardest, he simply can’t give her what she craves. Her work life isn’t that much better, as she is Associate Editor for Netconomy, England’s leading Internet magazine. While she has the title, she does not seem to have the control to go along with it. She still writes and reports most of the stories herself, and her boss wants her to go to Amsterdam to interview the famous porn Webmaster Dirk Meessens.

She goes very reluctantly and her fears are confirmed after she watches one of his women perform. The experience shakes her as it reminds her of the past and desires that once awakened were never dealt with properly. Donovan Grant awakened those desires and because of his link with Meessens; her editor makes her follow the trail to Donovan Grant and his island, and unwittingly into his ultimate plan for world domination.

At 266 pages, this is a very enjoyable and arousing novel with complicated and interesting characters. There are plenty of twists and turns, as this adventure style novel that just happens to have plenty of graphic sex thrown in, winds its way to an intriguing conclusion. That fact, plus the amusing social commentary sprinkled through out the work as well as just flat funny bits of dialogue makes this a must read. This novel is extremely well written and available through Amazon.com and www.Xlibris.com as well as the home website, www.adrianhunter.com

CHERRY BOYS: P.O. Box 392, White Plains NY 10602 - E-mail: DianaEditr@aol.com. CONTACT: Diana Sheridan, Associate Editor. Quarterly “vanilla” digest for gay males about getting a guy’s cherry (from the other guy’s viewpoint). 100% freelance; some assigned, some unsolicited. Works with new writers. Responds in three weeks, sooner on E-mail submissions. Pays on publication. Time between acceptance and publication “varies greatly.” Buys all rights but will reassign book rights on request.
CURRENT NEEDS: Doesn’t really *need* anything, but is always willing to look.
PAYMENT: Pays $100 for a 2,000 - 3,000 word story if on disk or if uploaded by EMail and assuming it comes in without a major quantity of "funny characters" that need to be cleaned up; $80 otherwise.
WORD LENGTH: 2,000 – 3,000 words.
REPRINTS: No
SUBSCRIPTIONS: U.S - $9.97 for four issues; Canada - $15.97
HINTS: The best way to get a much faster response is to send the story by EMail to DianaEditr@aol.com (and note the intentionally omitted "o"--not a typo).

E.L. PUBLICATIONS: E.L. Publications is a small publishing business specializing in "growth" erotica -- that is, catering to the highly specialized fetishes involving: a) women who grow to giant size (macrogynophilia, a.k.a.- "giantess" or "gts") and b) women of normal size whose breasts grow huge (known as "breast expansion" or "BE").

These stories are illustrated with black and white line illustrations, and are published in print (rather than electronically).

We are currently seeking to hire freelance writers of giantess growth erotica and breast expansion erotica. Job applicants must: be skilled at writing in one or both of these genres, follow the editor's outline/instructions, and deliver commissioned work in a timely, reliable manner. All stories are approximately 8000 words in length, and are commissioned as "works for hire" -- that is, the work and all attendant copyrights are purchased outright and owned exclusively by E.L. Publications, at a flat rate of $150 per story. The author agrees to not disclose nor distribute the work for hire in any way. E.L. Publications reserves the right to edit as we see fit.

If you are amenable with the above conditions/ requirements and wish to apply, please email one or more brief examples of your work, to: trowelfraz@lycos.com

IMPORTANT: Please do not compose an entire story for submission; examples should not be finished stories, but are only to serve as samples of the writer's craft in the genres mentioned above; i.e.- at least one entire page devoted to a description of a giantess growth and/or breast expansion "growth sequence".

IMPORTANT: If you are unfamiliar with these genres and need more information about them before submitting an example, I strongly recommend that you read several examples of whichever form you choose to take on, since their criteria are so specific as to virtually guarantee failure of the uninformed. To that end, here are links to representative story archives for each genre (not affiliated with E.L. Publications):

Giantess Growth Story Archive: http://www.hi-standardsgtsarchive.com/toppage_noframe.html

Breast Expansion Story Archive: http://www3.bearchive.com/~stories/

If you should have further questions after perusing these archives, please feel free to email me.

Thank you,

Ed Lundt, Editor, E.L. Publications

SWELL AUDIO: Looking to join the Swell Audio family, and have your naughty work immortalized, recorded, and shared with countless thousands of devoted fans? Well then, boys and girls, do we have ever a deal for you.

We’re looking for your original, creative naughtiness, in whatever form that takes, including, poetry, prose, audio plays, confessions, and everything in between. We’re flexible as far as length and genre, and will consider pretty much anything you’ve got. The only thing we’re not looking for is anything criminal, such as child porn, bestiality, and other assorted unpleasantness. Keep it naughty, but keep it clean. Well, relatively clean. Well, just keep it legal.

We acquire only audio rights to work we accept. All other rights, including print, electronic, and film, belong to the author.

Unless otherwise specified below, payment is negotiable. You show us yours, we’ll make you an offer, especially if you're submitting a substantial body of work. We’re looking for quality writers to work with, moving forward, and we’ll do what it takes to get you into the Swell Audio family, and keep you there. We understand the plight of writers, especially unpaid writers. That said, there’s only so much we can offer you, if you submit a ten line poem, no matter how hot and erotic it is.

We consider all work submitted for publication online in our erotic story archive, in addition to considering it for use on audio titles. If we arrange to feature your work online, you retain all rights, including electronic. We merely showcase your work, for adoring fans to enjoy. As writers we're dedicated to bringing as much work as possible in front of as many eyes as possible, even when it's not suited for use on our audio titles. While we accept any submissions, at any time, in any genre, currently we're most in need of submissions in the following specific areas:

Prose: We need quality, well-written fiction. Ideally we're looking for 2000 word stories, but we can work with you on length. No content restrictions, just nothing criminally violent, illegal, etc. We acquire audio rights to your work, and contributors whose work is accepted receive 3 copies of the CD their work is featured on.

Poetry: Basically the same as above (no length restrictions, etc.) but we're accepting all sorts of poems, and not looking for anything in particular, as far as theme. Just make it sexy. We acquire audio rights to your work, and contributors receive a copy of the CD their work is featured on.

Confessions: Any length, any subject. We acquire audio rights to your work, and contributors receive 3 copies of the CD their work is featured on.

Submit your work to Submissions@swellaudio.com. Either copy and paste your submission into the text of the email, or attach it, as a separate file:

Market News: BrilliantSmut
============================

"Brilliant Smut went offline at midnight January 31, 2002. It was a labor of love, and Kevin and I don't regret a second of it. We reached out to a great community and they accepted us and our experiment. We met great people. We learned a lot about business. However, we didn't learn it fast enough. In the end, it was success that killed the site--we received too much traffic for the revenue we were generating. Most of our friends and acquaintances can't believe that too much attention can actually bury a business, but that's what happened.

In any future attempts, we'll do it smarter. Until then, hugs to all."

Tom Myer, editor and cofounder of brilliantsmut.com

To Everyone Who Submitted to Best Fetish Erotica;

I have just discovered that Yahoo has not been downloading my email and my Venus or Vixen server has been dead - I have been trying to resurrect it but have not been succesful. I have been waiting for Cleis Press to get back to me since they have final say on what goes in the book. The book was pushed back because of 9/11 - I lost one of my best friends. And Cleis hasn't gotten back to me. But I would like to talk to everyone who submitted and answer any questions. If you could email me at carabruce@yahoo.com I would love to talk to you. I am so sorry about this. I had no idea that Yahoo was not downloading my mail. I sincerely apologize and feel horrible about this.

Thank you,
Cara Bruce

--- Q & A ---
=============================================

One reader wrote:

Long time reader of your newsletter. I think its helpful and I look forward to it every week. I was wondering if you could address this in the Q&A section or direct me somewhere to help me out. With my writing I feel I develop scenes well but when I'm working on stories they don't seem to go anywhere. In my erotic stories the characters are in a developed situation but I feel like they just end up having sex in the end.

While I haven't read any of this reader's work, I think what he's referring to has to do with a lack of character development. Often what happens when a character isn't fully realized is that, while the situations, scenes and plots are all good, there is a lack of energy in the story as a whole.

I believe that the character, more than anything else, carries the story. Often I start with a character and let his or her personality lead the action and plot. I've found that, without well developed characters, stories do, as this reader says, just end up with people who have sex in the end. And while the "having sex" part is a big part of all smut, it's usually not enough to sustain a whole story.

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

--- Looking For Writers ---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Payment varies; From $0-$10 per article (depending on site income for the month) OR a copy of one of the books on the Order Form. I'll also include a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
