................................................................................................................................... ========================================== Includes Paying Markets! By Katy Terrega This e-book has EVERYTHING the aspiring porn writer needs to know! Click on http://www.KatyTerrega.com/dirtyjob.html for chapter headings and excerpts. Or order here - http://www.KatyTerrega.com/orderebook.html ========================================= Those of you who've read my book know that I prattle on about the importance of backing up your files. Would that I followed my own advice! Actually, my recent computer crash could have been worse, I "only" lost my Word and Excel files, not my email and web page info. And my last full back up was three months ago, so I've still got all the basics from years past. But I did lose all of my most recent manuscripts plus three months of business (newsletter, submissions, market listings, income, outgo, etc.) files, arrgghhhhh! I am not looking forward to piecing everything together. If you've sent me an article for the newsletter recently, please send it again as all my info from the last three months is gone. Also, if you've emailed me and I haven't gotten back to you, just try again. In addition to the crash, I was offline for a week and am woefully behind. Okay, now on to business... Luckily, the contest info from the last issue was preserved! For you new subscribers, I ran a contest wherein the 82nd person to respond to the newsletter would receive a copy of either "It's A Dirty Job" or "Porn 101." Surprise, we didn't get to 82! So, the contest is still on, which means y'all can try again. Just reply to the newsletter, no need to type anything, and I'll keep counting. I'm thinking we should hit 82 in the first day or so. This issue's a little shorter than usual but we've got an aritcle by Barry Johnston on the importance of doing research, several really good market listings and some great Goings On. Enjoy this issue and please keep in touch! Katy
=========================================== It's a beautiful April afternoon in a meeting room on an office campus somewhere in suburban USA. If the meeting ends early, at least a few folks will try to get in nine holes of golf before heading home. Today's the first day the temperature made it to the seventies since last fall and I wouldn't mind getting in a bicycle ride myself. But instead, when the meeting ends, I'm taking advantage of the office park's proximity to Route 13 and heading out and do some research. In my state, laws governing adult bookstores and other related pleasures are pretty much left to local municipalities. Therefore it's possible to live in an area where no such outlets exist. But the township next to where my meeting is going on is saturated with such establishments. Along the highway, at least three stores are within a mile of each other. The meeting did indeed end early, so off I went to research new publications to send my short erotic fiction. The store I choose was friendly to browsers and I could take all the time I wanted without feeling pressured to make a purchase. The man behind the counter didn't seem to mind that I brought a pen and notebook with me, but was probably a little curious about why I spent much more time reading the editorial information and addresses on the inside covers instead of gawking at the pictures. I've had over eleven erotic short stories published on a little over two years. But one thing I learned very quickly is that just because an editor liked your work once, doesn't mean he/she will publish your second piece. I was lucky enough to have my very first story published in one of the largest "letters" magazine in the nation. "We sincerely hope to hear from you again very soon," wrote the editor in a flattering letter that accompanied my check. Inspired, I sent them another story, very similar in plot and style to the published one. The manuscript was sent back to me a few weeks later. "We don't believe a word of this!" was handwritten across the top without any other explanation. Always believing in persistence, I sent a third manuscript with a cover letter reminding the editor how much he liked my first story. This one was returned without any comment. What I learned from this experience was that the author of "Who Moved My Cheese" was right. If you are not familiar with the delightful little book, it is well worth reading. Two little mice learn the simple truth that a large block of cheese won't last forever and that part of the joy in life is searching out new cheese. Unfortunately, the other two characters in the parable, two little men, learn this lesson the hard way. Like the mice, savvy writers of erotica are grateful for any repeat business, but are still constantly searching for new cheese! If I am actively working on a manuscript, I purposely avoid actually reading the stories in the magazines I am researching. I want my voice to truly be my own and I don't want to plagiarize. However, if I am between works, I might purchase a magazine and check the style of the stories against my own, just to see if I am in the ballpark. While I plan purposeful trips to adult bookstores to get ideas about where to send my manuscripts, researching ideas for plot is quite another matter. With the exception of my field trips to adult bookstores and an occasional night out with the guys at a strip club, my personal sexual adventures are very much limited to activities I can do with my wife (and only my wife!) It's been that way for the past 23 years. But I am always alert for scenes and even dialogue that might be the springboard to creativity, especially when the well starts to run dry. For instance, late last winter, my wife and I were eating breakfast in our favorite diner when two particularly attractive couples walked in together. The hostess showed them to a booth directly across from our table. The first couple was just about to sit down when one of the men said, "I want to sit next to Brenda." With that remark, each woman paired up with the other's partner before they sat down. To the average person, this little scene would go unnoticed. But for the aspiring erotic storywriter, this is research! As a writer, I try not to cross the line between keeping my ear open for good dialogue and eavesdropping. In this instance, I didn't feel it was polite to listen in on the rest of their conversation. Besides, I though it would be much more fun to play in my own head, "what if?" Why were these two couples meeting for breakfast? I decided that they met to plan a canoe trip they wanted to take together in the summer. Was the man's request to sit next to the other guy's partner just innocent flirting or was there more to it? I decide that it was innocent flirting at the time, but when summer comes and the couples are out on a remote mountain lake, things get out of hand pretty quickly. A forgotten pack containing swimsuits leads to skinny-dipping, which in turns leads to other amorous activities. "Adirondack Weekend" became one of my favorite stories and was published in May 2001! --- Barry Johnston is a published author, specializing in erotic fiction and bicycle travel guides. Unfortunately, when some people write about sex, they slip into some sort of porn jingo or baby talk. Don't dumb down to us. Instead, write intelligently about sex. Tell us how and why your characters are enjoying it. We want to hear all of the details about what makes it so passionate, sexy, interesting and fun.
Variations does not purchase photographs or poetry. We are not interested in negativity, jealousy, cheating, crimes, anyone under 21, relatives, pets or coercion.
Most importantly, read the magazine to familiarize yourself with our voice, style and categories. Write about what you're familiar with and the most comfortable discussing. We're looking for focused pieces which are carefully crafted by excellent writers.

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!
I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. I pay with a copy of the updated 'It's A Dirty Job...Writing Porn For Fun And Profit' or 'Porn 101: 12 Essays On The Art Of Writing Porn And Erotica,' plus a lengthy bio and url if you'd like.
