--- Writing Porn For Fun and Profit! --- ========================================= Happy Holidays y'all! And Merry Christmas Eve to those of you who celebrate Xmas. Looks like we're going to have a white Christmas here in Colorado, which is rather unusual. It's been really cold, too, and looking to get worse. Of course I really can't complain, I could live in the midwest... Wow, it just now (duh) occurred to me that it will be a brand new millenium when the next issue comes out. I have Xmas On The Brain disease I guess. The inability to think past the 25th of December, as if nothing exists except Santa Claus, eggnog, presents, and, oh yeah, peace on earth and good will toward all. Given all that, this issue is going to be fairly short, especially compared to the last monster issue. There's one great market, at least for the female subscibers. Hurry, though, the deadline for "Jilling Off" submissions is January 31st, 2001. I also have some info on the next short story contest, which will begin on January 8th. I've also got an idea for a new section - "Inspirations" - let me know if you'd be interested in submitting your own personal stories and/or reading others' work. Plus I'd like your input for "What Do You Think?" which we'll start up again in the next issue. Happy Holidays to you all! Katy
=========================================== It's back! Almost back, anyway. This will be our third contest and I'm assuming it'll be the best yet! Mark your calendars and flex those porn-writing muscles, I'll have all the juicy details for you in the next issue, due out on January 8th. In the meantime check out last season's winner - Kelly Kesner's "March Madness" - here. =========================================== I often feel as though I'm working alone, toiling away out here in cyberland, with only limited contact with other editors and writers. From your letters, it seems as though some of you feel that way, too. When a reader suggested that she'd like to know what other reader/writers thought about a particular subject, I saw the perfect opportunity for a new section. We started last time with the subject of pseudonyms and several of you wrote and shared your experiences. For this issue I picked the subject "Making Time for Writing." How do you find the time? Is it a problem? Do you have to fight for time? Do you have tricks or helpful advice to share? Do you, like me, do it full-time and still not have enough time? Please feel free to share your thoughts with all of us. I'll assume, unless you tell me otherwise, that you'd like your words published here. And I'll also assume that it's okay to use your name, so please tell me if you'd rather not go public! Please feel free to email me if you've got any suggestions for the next topic, or if there is a particular subject you'd like to see. =========================================== Hmmm...well maybe it's kind of a dumb name for a section and maybe I'll change it. We'll just call it our working title for now... Many of you have written telling me how you've decided to make a change, maybe actively pursue writing, maybe work harder on selling. Often, you haven't made a sale yet but are trying to change that. One reader, whose thoughts will be here in the next issue, wrote an inspirational little story about her own personal writing process/progress, and I thought you all might want to read it, and maybe write one of your own. I'd like for this, like "What Do You Think?", to be a sharing format, one where we can communicate with each other on subjects we're all interested in. Only one caveat: I do try to keep this newsletter on the "vanilla" side of actual porn. Sure, I write the hard core stuff and assume that a lot of you do also. But that's its own genre, for the newsletter itself, I like to keep the language relatively "presentable" and reserve the right to edit out the really dirty parts if necessary! So please, if you're interested, send me your inspirational stories, your thoughts or dreams or hopes, and I'll print them here, starting next issue! =========================================== Tell me what's going on! Have you made a sale? Do you have a piece being published? Let me know and I'll print it here for all to see! --- Check out my column at http://www.AbsoluteWrite.com on - what else?! - writing porn. This week - battling a looming deadline, rambunctious kids and Christmas shopping that HAD to get done - I cheated and used a partial chapter from my book on how to tell if porn writing is the genre for you... =============================================== =========================================== SASE! No, that's not a cry for help, although it surely could be. SASE's are a necessary evil of the business. No matter that the editor has your email address and will likely contact you that way. No matter that this particular market will probably never respond to your perfectly professional submission anyway and, as if that weren't bad enough, will probably toss your stamp. No matter that they have lots more money than you and can surely afford a stamp, whereas you're peeling them off of old envelopes (when you're lucky enough to find one that hasn't been postmarked) and gluing them onto your submissions. You still have to enclose one in all of your hard copy correspondence. HAVE TO. No exceptions. (Well, there might be one or two but we're not going there today.) But, even though you have to spring for a stamp, you can avoid paying for the return of your entire manuscript. Note in your cover letter that the editor is free to dispose of the manuscript and use the enclosed SASE for their reply. You'll save a little money and you can print up a nice, clean manuscript for the next editor. --- Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. =========================================== I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash. ============CLASSIFIEDS==================== ========================================== Writing Porn For Fun and Profit!
