............................................................................................................................................. ========================================== We're a community of erotica lovers! Gay-friendly, bi-friendly, kink-friendly. Stories, articles, reviews, and discussion forums. All for under 10 bucks a month! http://www.brilliantsmut.com editor@brilliantsmut.com ========================================= I'm writing this from my living room; we're finally back! We've been working hard for over a week now but there are still over a hundred boxes to go through, another hundred small repair-y things to do and, oh yeah, we still don't have a couch, toaster, dressers for the kids, shelves or dozens of other semi-essential items. And for the time being I'm using an orange vinyl kitchen chair for an office chair (looking on the bright side it is quite retro.) Things are, quite literally, a mess. But hey, at least we have a house to come back to. Don't tell my daughter that, though, she's still quite despondent about the fact that the curtains I made for her before she was born were fried and that most of her stuffed animals were more or less ruined in the cleaning process. Harsh realities for an eleven year old. I am sympathetic but it's tempered with a sense of relief. I joined her for her first half day of middle school today and they talked about the sixth grade girl who died last year crossing the street as she was walking home from school. Talk about harsh realities. My daughter may not appreciate the fact that things could be worse but I sure do. My kids are alive, I can't complain... Okay, on that sobering note (for me at least,) down to business... We've got a whole bunch of Goings On this issue. A lot of readers are writing saying that they are making first (and second and third) sales to markets that they read about it in the newsletter. That's great! We've got an article by Lancelot Knight about rejection, a couple of good market listings and a contest, some good news about VenusOrVixen and I talk a little about writer's guidelines and such in Q and A. The next Short Story Contest it's on it's way! I'm pretty sure I'll run it with the next issue but don't quote me on that yet. You can check out the rules and guidelines at http://www.katyterrega.com/contestrules.html. In the meantime, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch! Katy ===========================================
Rejection is never easy in any field of endeavor, and in the writing field you get far more rejection than you probably do acceptance. Being a professional is no insulator against rejection, either. I’ve written hundreds of short stories, fantasies, letters, and articles (both sexual and non-sexual) for the men’s magazine field. Yet right now, I have a query for an article circulating that has been rejected by two editors already. A beginning writer who I have worked with and who has, no doubt, a bright future in the field and I were talking about receiving rejections the other day and it put me in mind of an incident that occurred to me about ten years ago when I first entered the men’s magazine field. I had just written a story. True, it was an odd story, but it had all the ingredients that a good sex story needs—a fast-paced plot with plenty of hot sex and a great surprise ending. The characters were right for the magazine, so were the heroine’s physical attributes and the hero’s physical prowess. I sent it off to what I thought was an appropriate men’s magazine. In a couple of weeks I got the manuscript back from the editor, and with it was not just a rejection but a scathing rejection, a denunciation of my ability to handle the simplest of sentences. She couldn’t say enough bad things about the manuscript. Well, needless to say, I was depressed. Here I thought I was a professional and she was treating me like an adolescent. Nonetheless, after a week, I said, “What the heck,” and I sent it out to another men’s magazine. I didn’t hear for a month or so, then one morning I got a call from an enthusiastic editor. He thought it was the greatest thing since Rhett and Scarlett hopped into bed in that novel I forget the title of. Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, and Nathaniel Hawthorne had nothing on me. To top it off, he actually offered me money for the story. If I remember correctly, it was $500. Glowing, if not downright gloating, after his phone call, I began to think about the earlier rejection. The first thing that occurred to me is that it was good that I didn’t take that first editor’s judgement of the piece! Second, I began to wonder who was crazy here. Was it me? Was it the first editor? Was it the second editor? It was then I realized something very profound, which has stayed with me throughout my writing career: A REJECTION IS NOTHING MORE THAN AN OPINION. Editors are not gods and goddesses. They make mistakes; sometimes they show poor judgement. Who knows what that first editor’s problem was? Maybe she had a fight with her husband, with her boss, with her underlings. Maybe something I wrote in my cover letter pissed her off to no end. Who knows? The first editor might wonder what the second editor’s problem was. Maybe he was an idiot. Maybe he couldn’t read. Maybe he has the taste of a Neanderthal. Who knows? Of course, the opposite can happen as well. I wrote a short story for teenagers once that won something like 22nd prize in the Writer’s Digest short story contest. I sent it out to every teenage magazine I could find. Zip, zero, zilch, no sale. Finally, after about five years, I ended up giving it away to a small family magazine. The judge of the contest and I saw something in that short story that absolutely no editor saw! LOL. Writing—and reading, for that matter—are subjective experiences. One person’s Mark Twain is another’s Stephen King. One editor’s Crime and Punishment is another’s Porky III. Bottom line: it doesn’t matter. You might get a hundred rejections. Sure, you should analyze your rejections to study how to avoid them in the future. But don’t become discouraged by them. All that means is that one hundred opinions didn’t like your piece. Maybe 101 will do the trick. After all, ultimately, the only opinion that really matters is your own. --- Lancelot Knight has been writing fiction, plays, articles and reviews for thirty years for many national and international magazines. NIGHTCHARM: http://nightcharm.com/effluvia/FAQ/submissions.html Erotica guidelines: As purveyors of sophisticated smut, we look for gay male homoerotic fiction for masturbation and cogitation. We feature stories that combine erotic appeal with beguiling story, characters or mood, or unexpected humor and perspective. We think the best stories explore tension and taboo; the contrast of the flat everyday world with the focused blaze of sex creates the violation of expectation that makes hot shit hot. Nightcharm is a popular online gay erotic magazine read by over 100,000 visitors each month. Nightcharm has been lauded for its unique content and ethos: a stylish, sexy, smart site highlighting sex and culture commentary and the connection between sex and soul. Our members only division, The Inner Circle, continues the tradition with thousands of top-quality hardcore pictures, original photography, webcam, an erotic art history, and top-of-line erotic fiction. The Inner Circle's readers depend on us for highest quality erotic fiction, and the inclusion of your work on Nightcharm Inner Circle will guarantee you the fussiest readers (and other pornographers) on the Net. If you're considering submitting a story, please go for it. Here are some guidelines to consider before submitting: A. We look for erotic fiction with a standout characteristic in addition to its carnal efficacy: humor, dark intrique, transporting mood... B. We do not accept stories with underage characters, rape or bestiality. C. We are concentrating on short fiction (damn the attention spans): about 4,000 words max. D. Send your submission in the text of an email to ann@nightcharm.com. We consider all submissions and have a quick turnaround time. Be sure you cut and paste the submission into the text of an email, do not send an attachment. A girl can't be too careful. E. We pay authors using PayPal -- a free, 100% secure online payment service. Write us if you have any questions about this system. Payment occurs upon publication. F. We will also consider submissions of previously published material, for which compensation will vary. =========================================== "I've been sending letters to print magazine editorial departments (Hustler, Club,
Barely Legal, Gent to name only a few) asking for submission guidelines. I've included a SASE with each request. Out
of the near-dozen letters that I've sent, not one has gotten a reply. What else can I do to get guidelines for the more
popular magazines?"

>Sigh<
Publications that are not professional in their dealings with writers drive me crazy! Writers deserve a response to their questions/submissions/requests, especially when they're presented in a professional way. Unfortunately, it's a basic fact of life that they don't always get one.
A writer is kind of stuck in a situation like this. You can't really complain because you risk pissing an editor (and a potential market) off. Of course, you're probably not going to be writing for this market if you can't get a copy of those guidelines, but still, you'd like a chance to try.
Here are a couple of options:
Phone the editor. This is probably the best way. Be quick and courteous and ask whether or not they have writer's guidelines and if so, if they can email or snail mail them to you. Some magazines don't even have written guidelines but might be willing to tell you what they're looking for over the phone.
Can you email the editor? It can be difficult to find contact addresses, but some editors are much more quick to respond via email.
If all else fails, wait and try again. Yes, you'll be out another two stamps (I hate that!) but it's always a good idea to give an editor a second chance.
---
Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...)

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!
I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash.
