............................................................................................................................................. ========================================== Includes Paying Markets! By Katy Terrega This e-book has EVERYTHING the aspiring porn writer needs to know! Click on http://www.KatyTerrega.com/dirtyjob.html for chapter headings and excerpts. Or order here - http://www.KatyTerrega.com/orderebook.html ========================================= I'm writing this from our temporary apartment but the progress is good on the house and it looks like we'll be back in a couple of weeks. Just in time for school to start! Hopefully by then I'll be completely caught up on everything...hahahahahhahha.... In our absence a mole has taken up residence in our already ravaged front yard, and, while my yard would never have won any awards, anyway, he's managed to wreak plenty of havoc. He's killed every last one of the flowers, including my favorites, the Oriental Poppies, plus we're pretty sure he killed the baby peach tree.....ggrrrrrrrrrrr. If any of you have any suggestions for dealing with him, I'm all ears. Have any of you had any experience with that device that emits an unpleasant (to moles and gophers, anyway) sound? And now onto some business questions... Has anyone heard anything about Foggy Windows Books? A reader was unable to contact them (as was I) and I'm thinking that they might have gone out of business. Also, do any of you know of a market that accepts erotica with religious influences? One reader wrote that she has a degree in theology and loves to "poke fun whenever possible"! We've got some good stuff in this issue: A great article by Danielle Smith plus another book review by Kevin Tipple. We've got several good market listings and LOTS of Goings On, and I talk a little about invoices in Q and A. As always, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch! Katy =========================================== The spanking story has a unique position in the porn market. First, it runs closer to the mainstream than many other subgenres. Memoirs, children’s books, and classical literature (think Dickens) often contain descriptions of corporal punishment that would be right at home in many spanking story collections. Second, unlike most erotica where the focus is on people having sex, the spanking story may have little or no explicit lovemaking. Therefore the writer is more dependent on characters, plot and dialogue than in the straight sex story, and must be as comfortable describing the impact of palms and paddles on derrieres as other writers are describing the myriad forms of couplings. The one way that spanking stories parallel straight erotica is in structure. Both good sex and spanking stories have the right balance between build up, action, and resolution. The only difference is that the “action” in a spanking story is some form of corporal punishment, given either erotically for the ultimate pleasure of the bottom or spankee, or as a form of discipline. Thus the driving force at the beginning of the story is not “why are these characters attracted to each other?” but “what is the reason why a character is being spanked?” This question can be difficult to handle in an era of political correctness where even the threat of a spanking may touch off abuse or sexual harassment claims. While erotica readers may have no trouble believing that two strangers in an elevator might feel sufficient attraction to end up on the floor together during a blackout, few would find it realistic if the man grabbed the woman and turned her over his knee. Because most markets prohibit stories involving characters under the age of eighteen, traditional disciplinary arrangements such as parent/child and teacher/student have limited applicability. Unless the writer relies on other power arrangements such as courts/defendants, employer/employee, shopkeeper/shoplifter, or police/offenders (all of which have been done mostly to death,) coming up with a believable scenario, especially between romantic partners, can be very challenging. There are several ways for the writer to get around the credibility problem.: 1. In the spirit of bodice rippers, the story can be set in a time when no one has heard of political correctness. Science fiction and fantasy settings a la Anne Rice are also useful. 2. The spankee can be the one to suggest the form of punishment, often by acknowledging that he or she has behaved badly and deserves to be treated as a child. 3. The story can take place within an established relationship in which the spankee has agreed to be disciplined as the circumstances arise. 4. The spankee may be drawn into the action by being aroused or curious at the thought of being spanked. Once this critical question has been answered, the writer faces the same sort of choices as with other erotica genres. An effective story usually must contain either multiple action scenes, or a tantalizing build-up to a longer scene at the end. Stories can be told from the single viewpoint of either the spanker or spankee, or more rarely by switching between the two (no pun intended!) Longer, more complex stories may bring in additional characters in either role. Unlike regular sex stories where dialogue is usually kept to a minimum, the spanker often lectures the spankee before and during the action or may increase the spankee’s psychological discomfort by describing each phase of the punishment. The writer’s description of the spanking should include either the way the spankee looks or feels anticipating the spanking and the procedure used to get the spankee in a “bottoms up” position. In the U.S. markets, most spankings are delivered by hand, paddle, hairbrush, belt, ruler or wooden spoon; foreign markets are less fond of paddles, but are more familiar with slippers, tawse, and canes. While many scenes may begin with the implement being applied over clothes, most readers in the genre expect that the target area will be bared before the action concludes. The severity of the punishment varies considerably by story, but generally requires the spankee to experience reddened skin and pain along with some degree of humiliation or embarrassment. After the action is concluded, the story should have a resolution beyond the fact that the spanking is over. The spanker can take advantage of the fact that the spankee is already partially undressed to go on to more garden variety sexual pursuits. Or a character can consider whether the spanking solved a problem or whether a return engagement is likely. To immensely strengthen a story, add a punchy ending that twists the plot or throws new light on the title. Many general erotic markets such as Clean Sheets accept spanking/BDSM stories. However, for paying markets exclusively devoted to the subject, all of whom have sample stories available for review, try: Scarlett Hill: Guidelines at http://scarletthill.com/SSS2000/MF-main.htm. Pays $.01 - $.02 per word dependent on amount of editing required. Stories must be a minimum of 2000 words and fall into M/F, F/M, or F/F categories. The Spanking Digest: http://www.spankingdigest.com. No guidelines. Pays for first story with 3-month membership, additional stories at $.02 per word. No length restrictions and great subject flexibility. Paddles: http://www.paddles.net/paddles.html. No written guidelines. Pays $100 Australian, or approximately $50 U.S. for 2000 - 3000 word M/F, F/F, and F/M stories that meet Australian censorship guidelines. Variations: Guidelines at http://www.variations.com/contact.html#guidelines. Pays $400 for 3000 word first person narratives about couples engaged in spanking. Amoret: Guidelines at http://amoretonline.com/C047.htm. Pays around $.02 per word for 100-word or less flash stories. --- Danielle Smith is a former lawyer living in Houston, who finds writing erotica a lot more fun than appellate briefs. She has sold full-length stories to Paddles, the Spanking Digest, CF Publications and Scarlett Hill, as well as flash stories to Amoret. Currently she is working on a BDSM-related novella. ---

Bodice Rippers - By Anastasia Din "The air was cold on my breasts and my nipples tingled, hard points. Staring into the darkness of the velvet hood, I tried not to shiver. I could hear the man pacing around me, inches away, moving so quietly, and yet there was an impression of size, of danger about him despite his silence. I was acutely aware of my nakedness." So begins the first novella of this arousing and well-written book. Two of the novellas are set in the distant past, one in the future, but all contain sheer eroticism and tight writing. This is simply some of the best that Renaissance E-Books has to offer in the adult fiction (Sizzler) line. The book opens with the novella, "Bondage, Beauty and the Beast." As is obvious from the quote above, Brianne is naked and helpless with her hands bound before her. She is on a country lane somewhere with her head under a velvet hood. Her husband has died and to make sure that Brianne can't get her share of the inheritance, her stepson is selling her as a slave. The touch of the stranger on her naked skin arouses her tremendously and she feels shame for her uncontrollable public display. With the deal all but sealed, the buyer wonders what she looks like. The hood is lifted and she sets her eyes on the buyer. Cursed by the witch Nimue, he still has the form of man but is covered in black fur along with two horns on top of his hood. "Yet despite those animal features, his face was human. Indeed, there was raw masculine beauty in his high, broad cheekbones and square chin that not even fur could disguise. His lips were full and sensuous, though as dark as his pelt, and his teeth gleamed white as he smiled down at me, hungry and possessive. "'I'll take her,' he told Cedric, his voice rumbling with lust. I fainted dead away." They complete the transaction and she soon finds herself scrubbing the floors, adorned only in the chains that press sensitively against her body. He shows her compassion in the beginning, but after a failed escape attempt, she must submit fully to being his slave. There is a reason why castles have dungeons and the Beast puts his to very good use. The next novella, "A Question of Pleasure," concerns Rose Carson, spy for the Confederacy during the Civil War. While spying for the south, she has been sleeping with Major Alan McReynolds of the Union Army. She has fallen deeply in love with him, as he has with her, but he also suspects that she is a spy. She wanders into his trap and he decides to take matters firmly in hand to urge her to confess. The final novella is set in the distant future and is titled "The Bloodslave." In the year 2459 A.D. a band of mercenary vampires wage a battle against the T'tcha Ker. The mercenary vampires, who also happen to be telepathic, are winning the battle. They are in a mop-up style operation as they come under fire from a sniper. As they work closer to the sniper who is running out of ammunition, they realize that the sniper is human and even better, a woman. They capture her and quickly discover that she is also a virgin. As if she ever really had a choice, she is forced to satisfy their longings, as they have not seen a woman in a very, very long time. But, as the novella unfolds, one has to wonder who really is the prisoner? These three novellas make up a very good book. My personal favorite was the first novella, but the entire book is well written and arousing. Whips, paddles, various devices, candle wax, and a few other favorite things make up just part of this book. But while bondage and playing is a major theme of the work, relationships and expectations are also very important in each novella. Beyond the toys, the writing is crisp and these characters are rich and evolving. The themes may be old, like many others in adult works, but there is something different in the way they are presented here. These are not cardboard characters and each novella has its own twist to make it different than normal. If you are into bondage and such, this is definitely one to add to the collection today. =========================================== Hurry, the deadline on this contest is August 1st! You stop mid-stride and frantically strip search yourself for bus transfer, business card, dollar bill to catch the perfect song title before you lose it forever. You stayed inside when you were a little girl to make for yourself the stories that the world wasn't writing for you. You write to seduce women. You write to seduce yourself. You write to balm the hot wounds. You fight with the words you've been given, the words that confine you are the same that free you. In the Margins is a compilation of writing by queer women. The love poem to a straight girl. The coming out story. The journal entry of the first hate crime against you. Writing about writing, about how you first found yourself pen-in-hand, dead-to-the-world, thin film of concentration on your upper lip, getting it down. Right. You are in a long line of queer women writers. We want your stories. We want your poems, your essays, your letters, your rants, your songs, your manifestas, your plays, your pleas. Anything that shows what writing means to you, how it has formed your identity. Send your submissions to In the Margins. We accept MS Word, HTML, RTF, and TXT attachments. Feel free to paste submissions in emails as well. Unfortunately, due to unreliable university mail, we cannot accept snail mail submissions. Submissions accepted through August 15, 2001.

That might sound a little overwhelming, especially if you, like me, wouldn't know an invoice unless maybe it bit you on the nose. But don't worry, they're really quite easy, and once you've mastered your first one, you'll be a pro. Your word processing program probably has one all set up, if so, you can just fill in the blanks. But for our purposes, an invoice doesn't even need to be that fancy. The invoices that I send out have the following information... To: Name of publication and contact, plus address. From: Real name and address and any other contact info, plus SS# if the publication has asked for it. For: Name of story, psuedonym and maybe the word count and date it ran (or will run.) Amount Due: How much they owe you. That's all! I make it look nice and neat on the page and send it out. It's not terribly fancy but it does the job. --- Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...) =========================================== Send Me Your Stories And Ideas! I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash.
