That may come as news to those of you who are waiting to hear from me, but it's true. If you haven't heard from me in a while, feel free to email me again, I may have missed something. With the fire and the kids being off school for the summer, it's been a little difficult to get anything done. But we're looking to get back into our house in about four weeks and the kids'll be back in school in five or six weeks, so the end, such as it is, is in sight. Thanks to all of you for your support and patience in the last month! On to business... We've got a winner for the Short Story Contest! See below for details. Thanks to all who entered, I had a great time reading the stories. As usual, it was hard to choose between them. There's another bunch of good stuff for 'Goings On' in this issue of the newsletter and I've answered some questions about simultaneous and multiple submissions in 'Q and A.' Plus, we have a great article by Lancelot Knight on "The Young Girl's Market." As always, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch! Katy =========================================== Drum roll, please..... The 5th Quarterly Short Story Contest, Summer 2001, is officially over and we have a winner... Congratulations to C. For awhile it was racial, and you saw all kinds of magazines for African-Americans and magazines with Asian models and Hot Latinas, etc. Oh, they're still around, but not to the degree they once were. Then for awhile there a number of Older Women magazines. For awhile it was amateur magazines all over the place. The last few years the field of young girls seems to have blossomed. Before I get any angry letters denouncing me as a molester, I want to make it clear that I am not talking about magazines of 12-year old girls here. I am talking about those nubile young women who are 18 or older. (Although as an aside here, I am quite astonished that boys and girls absolutely do not know anything about sex until they are eighteen. I guess I was a pervert when that 17-year old sweetie took me, a 15-year old novice, into the back of her Chevy and . . . oh, but that is a different story entirely.) There are a number of magazines catering to this interest in (supposedly) 18 and 19 year old girls. I guess, they're old women by the time they are 20. I think most of the readers here know of Tight and Young. There is also Baby Doll and 18eighteen [sic], Just Eighteen, and any number of others on your local newsstands. However, this sub-genre presents its own set of problems and difficulties specific to itself that you need to be aware of. First, and most obvious, is the one of age. While it is perfectly all right-indeed, it is preferable-to call your nubile heroine a young girl every so often, you want to make darn sure that somehow or another you bring in the fact that she is in truth at least 18 years old. You really don't need some shifty-eyed sheriff in Georgia denouncing you as a child pornographer. Another funny issue to do with age is that, while she might be old enough to screw at 18, frequently she cannot do other things-such as drink, for instance. I wrote a story once that featured a young man in a dead-end job as a gofer for an ad agency. He's told to go down into the lobby and bring up a case of cold champagne. A young woman (just 18, of course) boards the elevator with him and his case of champagne. The elevator gets stuck. It is a hot day and the two of them end up drinking the champagne. Of course, they eventually have sex in the elevator. (Hey, who said porn had anything to do with real life?). Eventually, the elevator works again, and they go up. He finds out his new girl friend is actually the boss's daughter, and his career is suddenly looking bright indeed. A silly little light-hearted romp, right? The story was rejected because in most states an 18-year old girl cannot drink champagne. Magazines can be very touchy when it comes to issues that might cause them legal problems--in this case, they felt it might be viewed as encouraging under-age drinking. Heaven forbid. (That's right, Sir, I didn't drink my first bottle of beer until I was 21. I swear.) As I said elsewhere, it does you no good to argue the point. That is the reality of the situation. Another odd contradiction about such stories is between the young woman's "supposed" innocence and the swiftness with which she succumbs to some stud's lusty charms. One way to accomplish this is to have her not be totally innocent-that is to say, she shouldn't be a virgin. In fact, it is probably a wise idea that she not be a virgin, but this isn't mandatory. But in any case she should not be promiscuous or terribly experienced. That way you can have her be experienced but not too experienced. I could be wrong here-Lord knows, as my wife will tell you, I frequently am-but I suspect part of the appeal of such magazines and such heroines is in their very "innocence"-real or imagined. I have found it a successful ploy to emphasize the innocence of the heroine. The male stud is always the teacher, the mentor, the guide, the more experienced one. If she-the heroine-isn't inexperienced, I at least have her look like an angel-or some other suitable cliche‚ that will absolutely substantiate her carnal inexperience. Of course, with the Older Woman magazines it is usually the opposite case. Not that the male is inexperienced, but the female is certainly more knowledgeable. Interestingly enough, in both cases, the heroine is always grateful, at the very least, for the attentions of our studly hero. Like any field-inside or outside of porn-there are conventions. If you follow them, you are much more likely to have success. Violate them, and if you are a genius, you will still succeed. But if you are a mere mortal like the one writing this article, then you will find it best to adhere to their guidelines, written and unwritten. Your chances of getting a check instead of a rejection will be much higher. ******************************************* Lancelot Knight has been writing fiction, plays, articles and reviews for thirty years for many national and international magazines. He enjoys traveling (Europe is his favorite destination) from which he often culls travel articles. In recent years he has taken up ghost story writing, for which he received an Honorable Mention in the "Year's Best Horror and Fantasy." Knight has written hundreds of short stories, articles, fantasies, and letters for many porn magazines, including Score, Tease, Naughty Neighbors, Just Eighteen, Chic, Fox, Gallery, Exotic Women, Leggs, Rear View, Gent, Letters, Hustler Fantasies, Jack, Night, Swingers, and even Playgirl, to name just a few. He has written porn for gays, for couples, for women, for lesbians, as well as-gasp!-straight porn for straight men. Knight feels that pornography is an honorable profession for which he need not apologize, unlike, say, politics. ===========================================

Many editors frown on this, as they don't want to waste their time reading and analyzing a story only to find out it's been accepted elsewhere. Of course, given the long lag time between submission and acceptance/rejection, many writers disagree with 'no simultaneous submissions' policies. A multiple submission is a little different. That's when you send more than one story to the same market. For example, you might send out two different stories to Just 18, hoping they'll like one or both. Some markets (but not all) frown on multiple submisssions as well, they prefer to concentrate on one piece at a time. --- Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does. (Of course, failing that, I'll ask y'all for help...) =========================================== Send Me Your Stories And Ideas! I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible. I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge. You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it. Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash.
