Happy Mother's Day (albeit a day late) to all you moms out there! I got a new mouse from my husband (you'd understand what a big deal this was if you lived here and heard me banging my defective mouse against the pad and cursing up a storm every two minutes or so), a bunch of handmade cards, origami peacocks and flying swans from the kids and, from all of them, a houseful of Lilacs, my favorite spring flower...I love Mother's Day!

A message board is becoming more of a reality thanks to Magdalene Meretrix, bless her. She's been holding my hand through the sometimes grueling process, offering advice and input. While I may not have one up until I switch hosts (let me take a moment to publicly express my displeasure with Interland, my current host) - which will be in June - we're getting closer. Check out her site at http://www.magdalenemeretrix.com and please send many kind thoughts her way...

I've got a lot of good stuff for you this issue...An article by Sadie Hart entitled "My Daddy Was A Smut Writer." (Oh, Lord, I wonder if my kids will writing articles like that when they grow up?!)...Kevin Tipple's every-other-issue Book Review Column...Coupla markets...Several good 'Goings On'...A call from a reader....Hmmm, I think that's it...

As always, enjoy the newsletter and keep in touch!

--- My Daddy Was A Smut Writer ---
--- by Sadie Hart ---
===========================================

Yep, my daddy wrote porn to support us in the 70's. I was proud of my daddy for living his dream of writing. It's a dream of mine as well. You see daddy wrote porn part of the day while working his day job. As long as I can remember both my parents worked at home. Daddy wrote porn in the afternoon or late at night. Momma was his proofreader/typist. She worked during the day typing up his manuscripts and proofreading them.

As children we led the average life; we went to the local recreation center for those after school activities. We learned crafts and how to dance and be creative. We were members of the local Girl Scouts, in fact Momma was the regional head of our Girl Scouts.

Did we know Daddy wrote porn? Yes.

Did it affect us in a positive way or negative way? Well, that was a mix of both.

On the positive side it gave us a lifestyle so that we didn't want for many things. We had opportunities given to us as children; if Daddy and Momma hadn't been brave enough to enter that world we'd have been struggling.

Negatively, Daddy made the mistake of using his real name on some of his first books. We lived in a small town. The local newspaper wrote an article about him that resulted in the outpouring of the local morality police that branded him as a pervert. Some of our previous friends now weren't allowed to associate with us. I guess we were spawns of the devil incarnate itself.

All in all, though, I learned through my Daddy and Momma's bravery that dreams come true for those that want it badly enough. Sometimes you have to do work that you wouldn't normally do to feed your family. But then again I think Momma and Daddy liked their work. They were able to give us quality and quantity family time while providing for us. I also learned that when in the porn/erotica field, a pseudonym is an asset, in can save you a lot of public harassment.

As for me, I choose to write porn/erotic as a fun outlet for my creative self. Besides that it allows me to do some fun research into the possibilities of living out some of my fantasies. A bonus for my honey isthat he gets to play, too, and being a Scorpio sign that’s a blessing to our relationship. For us we have to be more intimate to be able to "practice" what I write. Intimacy helps us grow closer each and every day.

This journey as a porn/erotica writer is just beginning for me. I'm looking forward to getting some of those interesting rejection letters. I'm also finding an interesting way to market myself in this special writing genre. I mean, it isn't like I can plaster the town with flyers, bookmarks and other promotional items like some other writers. Or can I?

I'll have to let you know about that sometime later, after I've practiced that end of the craft.

GIRL PLAY:

I'm accepting personal essays, recollections, and some fictional stories by women for a literary collection about girls masturbating together. How have your early experiences informed your adult sexuality? Girl Play will shed light on this common but often denied aspect of female sexual development. See http://www.angelfire.com/celeb/girlplay for complete guidelines. Please write me at evelyn_lb_scott@yahoo.com if you have any questions. Deadline: June 1, 2001.

From Diana Sheridan:

AJA/SPORTOMATIC/BRIDGE STREET/FRESH START are going to a paperless policy and are restructuring their pay schedule accordingly. All story mss submitted on disk or online (as attached files) in a format their computers can read (basically Word/WordPerfect for Mac/PC and *most* RTF submissions) will be paid as always at $100/story. No paper copy is necessary. Stories submitted as paper-only will be paid at $80/story. Stories submitted in unreadable format or with a plethora of "funny characters" will be returned. "Letters" (though they buy few--basically for YOUNG & TIGHT FANTASIES, not a big market) *must* be submitted as files--disk or attached EMail. If you can't submit in a readable format as an attached file, you *may* submit as the body of an EMail, though this is not preferred. Thank you.

SEX.COM is looking for stories for their new newsletter venture. Each story will start off hot and lead the reader (within the first 3-5 sentences) to a pay site in the same category as the story. Maximum word length is 1,000 words. Pay is $25-$35 p/story. Reprints are okay, but the pay will be less. Buys three month exclusive rights, plus continued-use rights. (This means that for three months you can't sell your story elsewhere, after that you can sell it but Sex.com can also continue to use it indefinitely.)

Categories are as follows: (You'll get a category box the first time you visit the site, after that you'll only see it once a week.)

* Hard Boy/Girl
* Lesbian Lickers

Whatever - By Dale Doty
ISBN # 1-929670-10-9
(http://www.renebooks.com)

Last month I reviewed The Stalker by Claire Thompson. That erotic novel, using two points of view, had bondage as a central theme of the work. If one takes and places the concept of bondage on one end of a continuum, then on the other end you might have this work by Dale Doty. "Whatever" tells more of a romantic story of a couple besieged by their individual insecurities as well as outside forces.

This novel is told through the viewpoint of two very strong characters. Mr. Doty opens the novel with Jodi Swanson. She is average in every aspect; body type, abilities, the whole deal. She has not had a happy life at all. Everything in her life has gone wrong and she has decided it is time for a fresh start in a new place.

"'It's just you and me, baby,' she said, patting the rusty top of the vehicle as she opened the door. She checked the cargo area, illuminated by the automatic interior light and reached under the dash to make certain the manila envelope containing a cashier's check for ten thousand dollars and five hundred in cash was still in its hiding place."

She has packed her few possessions in her old Ford Econoline Van and hit the road for Myrtle Beach, which is the one place in the world she wants to be.

She soon pulls into a truck stop gas station and stops for a refill. Before leaving, she flips the bird at a man who seems to be appreciating her body a bit more than he should. She heads back out on the road and quickly into a rainstorm. Trying to take a fork in the road, her van slides and crashes as she loses control.

Seconds before the van explodes into flames taking the last of her possessions with it, Nathan Wilson rescues her. Nathan just happens to be the man that she had moments earlier given the finger to back at the truck stop gas station. Fortunately, he is also going to Myrtle Beach and offers her a lift and a job.

With misgivings, she accepts both and soon winds up at his house on a small inlet called Murrell's Inlet.

"They sat in the Taurus for several minutes, giving Jodi an opportunity to survey the scene. At the end of the driveway was a two car, brick garage. To the right, a smooth stone path led to the front of the one story brick house that overlooked a narrow inlet."

The beauty of the house and location are described in great detail and, at Nathan's invitation, she makes herself right at home. Soon, she is acting on the sexual impulse that she first felt, albeit briefly, back before the crash.

The heat between the two primary characters slowly and steadily builds with long, sensual lovemaking scenes. Events are moved slowly, seductively forward in increments, which helps to raise the reader's anticipation. Nothing is rushed as the characters are brought together.

At the same time, other potential partners make themselves potentially available to Nathan straining their tenuous relationship. Nathan is also confused about the signals Jodi is sending him as well as his own needs and desires.

"Her nipples grazed his chest as his lips sought hers. She pinned his arousal between them and darted her long tongue into his hungry lips.

"'I love you, Jodi Swanson,' he said softly, his fingers traveling down her back.

"'That's nice,' she purred and then wondered why the bulge between them suddenly disappeared."

Like normal everyday people both characters are confused about their own lives and what they want out of the future. The internal motivations of each character are examined as well as the visible motivations of each character such as lust. Both characters learn, for one example, that what can be physically appealing can hide someone who is rotten to the very core.

Please do not confuse this work with Doty's other available novel, Light My Fire. Much of what has been discussed in this column absolutely does not apply to his other work. It is a completely different work and is extremely hard-core in its approach to sex and violence. After reading both, I am struck at the major differences between the works.

"Whatever" is a very erotic adult novel combines complex character development, relationships, and sex to create a very good read. This is a far different Dale Doty and one that can be appreciated by all readers, especially couples. This is not one to be missed.

---Looking for Writers---
===========================================

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash.
