From The Editor

=========================================

First of all, sorry to all of you on the East coast, sounds like it's intensifying out there, good luck. I won't even talk about Denver's fifty degree weather...

Second, if you've tried to contact me in the last two weeks and haven't received a response, it's because I've been having problems with my e-mail program. I'm not ignoring you, I swear! Always feel free to contact me again if you don't hear from me within a few days; there's usually a problem if I haven't responded to by then. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Third, do any of you know of any decent mail list groups besides Yahoo? I'm tired of emailing them about the subject category of this newsletter and getting no response. But I'm not terribly familiar with my options, any ideas?

And Fourth, the Porn and Erotica Market Report is finally out!

After much hair pulling and time-crunching, the first edition is ready. It features listings for 13 paying markets, 1 paying call for submission, 2 non-paying markets and 2 writers' guidelines. Plus, there are market updates, a Q and A with Diana Sheridan, editor for Options, Hot Latinas and many other magazines, and an article from yours truly on "The Makings of a Good Writer." I hope to include many more Q and A's with both writers and editors in the coming editions.

You can order your subscription here!

Also, since I'm getting this newsletter out rather late today, I'll extend the special deal for both It's a Dirty Job and the Market Report. Until March 7th at midnight, you can get both of 'em for only $14.95. Order the special deal here!

Enjoy this newsletter and keep in touch!

Katy

--- Fantasizing With Your Palm ---
--- R.M. Williams ---
===========================================

Would you believe that the Palm could be a writer's best friend? No, I'm not talking about your palm. A Palm OS-based device can improve a writer's life.

Palm OS-based devices are handheld computers or Personal Data Assistants (PDAs). Originally designed to hold schedule and contact information, they have increased in capabilities to the point that they've become a feasible laptop replacement. A number of companies sell these devices: 3Com, Handspring, and Sony all having notable devices.

Palm devices are like dildos: available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors to fit each individual user's taste. Whether you want the smooth, rounded base of the Palm m100 or the slick color of a Visor Prism, there are plenty of options available. Prices range from $149 to $449 depending on manufacturer and model. Most are smaller than a paperback and can easily fit into a pocket.

The best way to decide which to purchase is to compare features per price, figure out which is more important; color, price, long battery life, expandability, etc. and get the device that suits you.

For writers, look for plenty of memory, long battery life, and expandability. This article was written using a Handspring Visor Deluxe. The Visor has good battery life, 8 Mb of memory, and a slot for Springboard expansion modules - useful for adding more memory, backing up your data, or holding a large dictionary.

I have two other tools that I use along with the Visor. First is the GoType! keyboard from Landware. I type faster than I can write with the stylus, and the GoType! provides a stable platform. The second tool is a software program called Wordsmith from Blue Nomad. Wordsmith makes it easy to synchronize files with my PC and Microsoft Word. With these tools at my disposal I can write anywhere, have all of my files and take advantage of any free time. Since the Visor comes on to the same spot it was at when I turned it off I can start right to work. With a laptop I would have to wait for it to boot up, load my word-processor and open the file.

How well do these devices work for writers? They are very satisfying. The screens are small but easy to read and the text can be enlarged. With the Visor's 8 Mb of memory I have my current novels, stories, and articles loaded - and still have space for much more. My writing has taken on a two step method of work on the Visor.

I compose first drafts using the keyboard. When I want to revise or edit, say I have a break at work, I can pull out the Visor and use the stylus to make quick changes or just read over the material. I also find the Visor great for jotting quick notes or ideas. As an added bonus the Visor's built-in organizer features help me stay on task and schedule my day. This convenience has an added benefit for writers working on erotica/porn. You can be enjoying your own variety of literary sex with no one being the wiser, whether you're at work, traveling, or sitting in your favorite cafe.

The adventurous writer will find a variety of other uses for their Palm device. How about carrying several ebooks? Or erotic stories? Email? Web content? Street maps? A thesaurus? It is possible with one of these devices and content is easy to find online.

Palm devices are only limited by your imagination. Pick one up - it could add a bit of spice to your writing life!

AMORET: A JOURNAL OF EROTIC AND SENSUAL FLASH FICTION: E-mail: amoretonline@hotmail.com. Website: http://www.AmoretOnline.com. CONTACT: Johanna, Managing Editor; Johanna receives submissions for the General, BDSM and Carte Blanche categories. Rachel, Special Features Editor; Rachel receives submissions for the Special Features category. Rachel and Johanna work on the Author of the Month category, but this is an invitation-only event and we do not accept unsolicited submissions for this category. Amoret is a free, monthly on-line publication that publishes erotic and sensual stories that are 100 words maximum. 100% freelance written. Works with new writers. Strives to respond to submissions within one week. Author holds all rights. Pays for the right to show the work, but the work can be seen elsewhere during that time. Pays on acceptance but sends out the checks in January, April, July and October. That way the author can accumulate a big amount rather than getting an occasional $2.00 payment. So if we accept a story in March, but it will be seen later in the year, we pay in April. Time between acceptance and publication varies. We can usually publish a submission the next month, but we have some work slated for publication in six months. We publish about thirty stories a month. Obtain guidelines on our website at http://www.AmoretOnline.com. Only accepts email submissions. No attachments. The submission must have the flash fiction, payment agreement and archiving agreement within the email. These agreements can be copied from the submission guidelines found on our website. CURRENT NEEDS: We have a theme every month for the Special Features Section. The list of themes can be found on our website. PAYMENT: We pay $1.00 USD to publish the story in an online issue. We also offer the choice of placing the story in our archives for one year after publication. We pay $1.00 USD to archive the flash fiction for one year. Many authors prefer having us donate the money to UNICEF in lieu of payment. WORD COUNT: 100 words maximum. REPRINTS: We accept previously published flash fiction if the author holds all rights to the story. HINTS: There are a few common mistakes that we see from authors when approaching our publication. The biggest mistake is sending us a sex scene rather than a complete story. The second biggest mistake is sending us something that is not sex-positive. We also don't like it when an author sends us a revised story while it is still in the submission process. If we reject a story and did not ask for a revision, we don't want the revised story re-submitted.

Right now we are dealing with a few authors who can't decide on and stick with a pen name. We think this is a bad move for them career-wise because they will not be able to create a following.

Regarding our publication, we notice that the most-read stories have provocative or intriguing titles.

Non-Paying:

PROMETHEUS: The TES Association, PO Box 2783, Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163-2783. E-mail: Prometheus@tes.org. Website: http://www.tes.org/prometheus/index.html. Quarterly literary magazine of the TES Association of New York, the country's oldest and largest BDSM support organization. Each issue is 80-100 glossy pages with professional-quality design and production. Circulation: Print run of 2,500 copies is distributed to TES members and nationwide outlets. Mostly freelance written. Welcomes new writers. Accepts reprints and simultaneous submissions. Time period between acceptance and publication varies greatly. Author retains copyright; submission of material signifies that the author grants one-time publication, online, and reprint rights to the TES Association. For guidelines send request to Prometheus@tes.org. For current issue send $14.95; for back issue, send $12.95 to PROMETHEUS, c/o the above address. Submit entire manuscript via e-mail attachment in a Microsoft Word-compatible format, under 3000 words in length if possible, sent to Prometheus@tes.org with "Submission" in e-mail header. Query if uncertain about suitability of material. Hard copy submissions should be in standard manuscript format and may be mailed to the above address. Reserves the right to edit all submissions. REPRINTS: Yes. Also accepts simultaneous submissions. SUBSCRIPTIONS: Annual subscriptions of four issues are available for $35 within the continental U.S. and $45 elsewhere. PAYMENT: Because Prometheus is an all-volunteer publication, payment for published fiction and non-fiction consists of a contributor's copy plus promotional space at the end of the piece. Photographers and artists whose work is accepted are entitled to a free one-eighth page advertisement in the issue in which their work appears plus a contributor's copy. CURRENT NEEDS: We are looking for well-crafted, creative fiction, non-fiction and poetry exploring some aspect of dominance and submission, bondage and discipline, fetish, role play, power exchange or S/M between consenting adults. TES is a pansexual organization so all genders, sexual orientations, and BDSM orientations (dom(me), sub, top, bottom, switch) are suitable. We are especially in need of how-tos and accounts of personal experience in the Scene. We also publish consumer reports, media reviews, reports on leather events and essays. Prometheus fiction and poetry ranges from literary erotica to explicit porn, from fantasy to humor. PHOTOS/ART: We are also in need of B/W photos and artwork relating to the above topics. Photographers must have model releases and the models must be at least 18 years old to appear in Prometheus. Title 18 releases are strictly adhered to, where applicable. HINTS: A great deal of quality BDSM erotica has been published recently. Read extensively in the field before attempting to write fiction for us.

Lawrence Schimel has a new book out...

KOSHER MEAT, edited by Lawrence Schimel and published by Sherman Asher Publishing, has just been announced as a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, presented by the Lambda Literary Foundation, in the category of Best Fiction Anthology. The winner will be announced on June 1 in a ceremony presented during the Book Expo Convention in Chicago.

KOSHER MEAT is an erotic collection exploring the intersections of Jewish identity and gay sexuality, whose contents range from a tale of an ex-porn actor who lives across the street from a Yeshiva to a piece about cruising in Independence Park, from a story about two men who meet at the Holocaust Museum and reaffirm life through their passion to a sweet fable of a man who builds himself a golem lover. These diverse, fascinating personal stories arouse and enlighten and push the limits of previously conceived notions as to the intersections of sexuality and religion.

I've got my revamped website up and running here - www.KatyTerrega.com. Take a look and let me know what you think!

In case you're thinking of starting your own story site, I'll warn you right now that mine doesn't make any money! Unfortunately I've got no advice to offer. But one of my goals for this year is to make the site not only profitable for my stories, but also to use it as a forum for other authors as well. I'd love to be buying and selling stories for all of us by the end of the year! Help me visualize, okay?

Tell me what's going on! Have you made a sale? Do you have a piece being published? Let me know and I'll print it here for all to see!

--- Q & A ---
=============================================

Queries...Who Needs 'Em?

Is it really all that necessary to send a query for a porn article?

Well, that depends. Almost all fiction pieces (short stories and letters, anyway) are sent as is. You send in the manuscript and the editor decides whether s/he wants to buy it.

Book manuscripts are usually not handled this way, however. Most book publishers (e-publishers included) want some combination of a query and synopsis and sample chapters.

Non-fiction articles sometimes need a query and sometimes not, often the size of the publication dictates whether they want to see the whole manuscript. The higher the circulation the more likely they'll want a query. Smaller publications will sometimes be more open to complete manuscripts.

In order to find out what any given editor is looking for you'll need to read the guidelines! Every publication is different, and they're all very specific as to their needs.

---

Send me your questions! I'll answer the most common ones here, and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find a pro who does.

===========================================
---Looking for Writers---
===========================================

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash.
