=========================================

This last week has been long and brutal for everyone, not only for Americans but for all those pouring out their support and empathy from other countries as well.

My fervent hope is that everyone is well and safe and my heart goes out to those of you touched personally by this tragedy.

I've decided to go ahead with this week's issue, but have kept it rather short...

We have a great article from Edo van Belkom that talks about his new sexual horror novel, "Teeth," some great Market Listings and Goings On, a bit of Market News and, of course, the winner of the Fall, 2001 Short Story Contest.

Take care,

Katy

===========================================
--- Short Story Contest: Fall 2001 ---
=============================================

And the winner is...

The Family Beef

by Barry William.

All of the stories were great this time; each and every one was well-written and unique. Matter of fact, they were so good it took me until this morning to decide!

In the end, Barry won because of superb characterization - his big-city cop is excellently rendered - and great dialogue.

Take a look at his story here , I'm sure you'll agree.

If you'd like to get a jump on the next contest, scheduled for December, take a look at the rules and guidelines and/or check out the Winner's Page to read our previous winners' stories.

--- Novel Of Sexual Horror Long Time In Coming... ---
--- Edo van Belkom ---
===========================================

In just about every review of my current novel TEETH, the reviewer has mentioned that the book started out as a short story. This little gem of information is included in the introduction to the novel by the late Richard Laymon who says that he first bought the prologue to the novel -- called "Lamia" -- for his BAD NEWS anthology, and that story went on to become the novel TEETH.

While it's true, I did sell the prologue to Dick as a short story, the sequence of events on the novel are far more complicated than that and span a period of almost ten years.

And so, for the sake of clarity, and to give you an idea the patience required in the publishing game, here's the full story of how the stories "Teeth" and "Lamia" and the novel TEETH came into being.

In the early 1990s I was writing all sorts of stories just trying to get them published. After wondering what I might write about next, I thought up a scenario in which a man who is afraid to go down on women wants to get help, but the sex therapist he finds intimidates him and charges too much money, so he decides on a do-it-yourself kind of treatment and winds up getting eaten by a prostitute/mutant alien when he tries to go down on her... confronting his fear head-on, so to speak.

The story worked out okay, and was accepted for something called POTENT APHRODISIAC which promptly folded. Then it wound up in the July 1993 issue ABERATIONS.

By this time I'd published plenty of stories, and a couple of work-for-hire books, and it was time to try a novel. A real novel -- as opposed to the ones I'd done for other people and the three or four of my own I'd practiced on -- in which I could put all the craft I'd learned writing all those stories.

Without an idea, I had a talk with my friend Rob Sawyer and he suggested a novel about the idea in "Teeth" would be different. Well, I couldn't argue with that, so I wrote the novel about a woman who has a special set of teeth -- not in her mouth -- that she uses to kill men with misogynistic tendencies.

Sounds like a good premise but this was the mid-1990s and horror was a dirty word in publishing, especially a sexual horror novel (rather than erotic) that straddled the line between two genres, horror and mystery. And so my agent shopped it around getting nice responses that all ended up talking about how it didn't fit the list, or how they wouldn't know how to sell it.

Of course, I began to wonder if the book was just plain bad. After all, editors can say anything when they turn down the book, so how can you tell? Well, the book's last-best shot at mass-market came with a publisher who was just starting to publish horror again and has since become a leader in the genre's revival. The editor there brought the book to the sales force and told them what it was about, to which they replied, "We can't sell that in Wal-Mart."

Sigh. So much for being different.

And so the book sat for a few years -- six to be exact -- and I didn't write any new horror novels because I obviously couldn't sell one.

But if I couldn't sell the novel, then maybe I could sell parts of it. So, like any writer trying to maximize his output, I packaged up the prologue as a story, calling it "Lamia" because I'd already used "Teeth" on the earlier story, and shopped it around, but every market seemed to be full or folded.

While this was going on, Steph Pagel of Meisha Merlin put out a set of guidelines asking for manuscripts that pushed the envelope. That seemed to describe my novel perfectly, so my agent sent it to Meisha Merlin. Steph was hesitant at first, but took the novel saying that if you put out a call for manuscripts that explore the boundaries of a genre, and one lands in your lap, you have to publish it.

However, while Pagel took the book, it would have to wait two years to see print. Two years is a long time, even in publishing, so when Dick asked me to contribute to BAD NEWS, I thought I could give him "Lamia" and even if he had it a year, the novel would still be coming out well after the anthology so there would be no problem on timing.

But BAD NEWS was delayed and the story and novel came out relatively close together so the connection and confusion between the two was even stronger.

So, there it is. "Teeth" became TEETH, but in a more roundabout way than most can imagine.

If there's a lesson in all this, it's about patience and timing. My agent believed in the novel and never gave up on it, even after a dozen or so rejections. And as for timing, in the time between my writing TEETH and its publication, others have stretched the horror envelope in many new and different directions.

In fact, I recently spoke with the editor who had the book turned down by his sales force and he now harbors a tinge of regret over not publishing it.

Well, he's not the only one.

But all good things come to those who wait, and I'm thrilled to see the book in print after eight long years.

My only regret is that I wasn't writing new novels in the interim.

Send Me Your Stories And Ideas!

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.

Right now I'm paying with a copy of the updated It's A Dirty Job...(plus credits) but as SOON as this site is self-supporting I'll be able to offer some cash.
