Happy July everyone ;)

I don't know about you, but this summer's already flying by, and we haven't done much of anything around here (except chores, just ask my poor overworked children.) I certainly haven't gotten much work done, what with everybody home. My work schedule always takes a severe beating during the summer months, it's all I can do to get a few regular monthly assignments (and the newsletter) out, which is hell on the budget.

Ah well, I'm trying to enjoy it anyway, we'll take a break this afternoon to go see "Lila and Stitch." My kids are almost too old for Disney movies anymore so I figure I better take advantage of their youth while I can.

We've got a good issue for you this week. A great article from Tara Alton on how to put the sizzle back in your erotica writing, a bunch of markets (a lot of of them are for women or are lesbian oriented, sorry guys) and I talk about "leg sex" in Q & A.

Now...about that story contest folks, the one that y'all said you were just dying to enter, the one that promised to be the mother of all story contests...

Tiffany A. Erotica writhes, clutching the blanket, screaming like a fax machine as she comes. Her nerves are a tingle, and she is washed away to the planet orgasm.

Wait a minute. Didn’t your previous characters seem a lot like her? Didn’t they do the same things? Blow job. Straight Sex. The big O. Is repetition creeping into your work without you even noticing it? Much like in real life, as your relationship with erotica develops over the years, your writing can get as stale as a married couple having only missionary sex once a week.

The solution. Tiffany A. Erotica needs to kick off her frumpy terry cloth house robe and get her ass in gear. She needs to spark up her love life and do it the old-fashioned way. Research. It’s time to self help herself to a new libido and add some sizzle to her repertoire. How can she bring zip and zing to your story ideas? Here are some tips to help her.

A) She should start at the book store and expand her base knowledge. No more recipe magazines for her. Women’s magazines slanted for sex are what she needs, the ones she stopped reading ten years ago because she figured she was married. Notebook in hand, she needs to take notes on those articles about having a threesome, doing it at the zoo and exploring her clit.

B) After that, she should inch her way over to the men’s section. Guys have their own mags slanted for sex, babes, cocktails and hot topics, and they all aren’t wrapped in cellophane. Men want to know the dirty, too. She finds an article on thirty new ways to please your lover. Several of them, like labia sucking and ice cube play, she’s never even heard of.

C) Back at home, she fires up the computer. Armed with her rising titillation, she uses the Internet as the tool it was meant to be. A search engine for sex. She uses “sex tips” and “sexual positions” as some search word examples and comes up with a plethora of new knowledge, amazed that even the good old stand by Mr. Missionary doesn’t have to be boring. She had no idea you could rest your ankles on your lover’s shoulders and stick your toes in your lover’s mouth.

D) Follow that link. Tiffany clicks on a sex toy site. Another wonderful place for what’s new and what’s hot. Here is a sexual education they didn’t teach you in grammar school.

E) Next, she decides to go on a field trip because she’s feeling frisky. She wants to lure her husband into her den of sin with a new look, and what better places to find that look, than the lingerie store and the leather fetish shop around the corner. Her terry cloth robe goes in the trash. Now she has a nice new pink PVC camisole, black leather skirt and fuck me shoes to wear for dinner, and after, a thong, white and tight, and not much else.

F) And then, not happy with that, she opts for a complete make over. Having been a leggy blond with full breasts for the last six stories, she wants a new look. Unlike a real person, who can drop twenty pounds after dieting forever and maybe getting a perm, Tiffany can change completely. She clips dozens of new images for herself. What about a full figured red head with a great ass or a tom boy who likes to wear too tight jeans, accidently displaying a camel toe?

Finally, no longer the bored housewife, Tiffany puts her new found information into a sex file, a place where a new idea can be found at a moment’s notice. She’s not going to let herself get stale anymore. Writhing and screaming like a fax machine may be fine once in a while, but she wants more.

Editor James Lowder is seeking submissions for The Book of More Flesh. A follow-up to the successful The Book of All Flesh, the anthology is scheduled for publication in October 2002. As with the initial volume, the new collection will showcase tales of zombies and the walking dead with a variety of settings, tones, and approaches to the subject matter. Writers are strongly advised to be familiar with The Book of All Flesh, and to offer stories different from the ones found there. Writers are encouraged to be inventive about the use of zombies, their origins, and their powers. All genres will be considered. Gore and sexual situations are acceptable, but only if justified by the plot or theme. Including serial characters in your work is fine, so long as the story stands alone and the character is accessible to readers from this story alone. As with The Book of All Flesh,

The Book of More Flesh will be released in conjunction with Eden Studio's All Flesh Must Be Eaten™ role-playing game. Writers are welcome to use settings or characters already published in All Flesh Must Be Eaten role-playing supplements (but not the original Book of All Flesh anthology).

If you do, a slightly modified contract will be required (to make it clear who owns what), but base copyright remains with the writer.

Story deadline:
August 16th, 2002.
Length: 3,000 to 7,000 words.

Virgins. History has given us a wide body of literature, myths, and folktales about the powers of virgins. But it's time to create your own virginity. Be your own virgin. No matter how many ways you've had or haven't had sex there's always something new to discover. We're challenging the way history has mythologized the virgin. Stand on the erotic edge and dive in. But most importantly: Tell us all about it!

Have you ever initiated a virgin woman to the pleasures of lesbian sex? Was she a virgin who had never had sex with anyone before? Or had she had sex with a man but never a woman? Or she'd played with fingers but never toys? What about you when did you lose your G-spot virginity? Spanking virginity? Three-way. four-way? What have you done to seduce the virgin? Did you use silly come-ons, or did she pursue you with all the delicacy of a Mack truck? Was the experience humorous, beautiful, uninspiring, life-changing? Were there unwanted repercussions? We want your true story, with all the erotic details. The book is scheduled for release by Alyson Publications in fall 2003.

GUIDELINES:

1) Should be a maximum of 15 typed, double-spaced manuscript pages. Name, address, phone number, and E-mail address (if applicable) should all appear on first page. Last name should appear on every page. NOTE: If accepted, the final manuscript must be submitted on computer disk.

2) Must be nonfiction but should read like a compelling piece of hot erotic fiction. Keep pacing, plot, character development, and setting details in mind. Each story should have a clear beginning, middle, and end and should build toward a detailed description of the sexual encounter and its aftermath. Dialogue--reconstructed to the best of the author's ability--is strongly encouraged.

3) If your submission has been previously published, make sure you have complete authority to grant us reprint rights.

4) Include SASE with sufficient postage to return manuscript. If manuscript is disposable, please state so in cover letter.

5) Contributors will be paid and will receive two copies of the anthology.

Nest O' Vipers is a zine that is an offshoot of The Amazon Slam, the Boston area all woman poetry slam. We are seeking original, irreverent submissions from women writers in any genre. If you have written something, read it over and thought, "I love this piece, but it's too juicy to put into print or even read aloud," we want it: poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction, send it! We are not a porn-site but we do welcome good erotica. We are looking for well-written, well-edited pieces that show aspects of women's lives not usually covered in mainstream media, even the so-called "gay and lesbian" media. We are primarily a forum for lesbians and bisexual women, but we welcome thought-provoking pieces from all women including straight and trans women.

The authors of accepted pieces will receive a nominal fee (yes, we pay, just not much) to put their work on our website for one month, after which time we will put other work up, and all rights will revert to the author.

Poems should run no longer than three 8 1/2" x 11" pages with one inch margins all around, in font no smaller than 12 point. Prose pieces will be limited to three 8 1/2" x 11" pages with one inch margins all around, in font no smaller than 12 point, though for an exceptional long piece we will consider publishing Parts 1,2 and maybe 3 in separate issues. Please save all submissions as "plain text," "text" or "text with line breaks": in other words notas Word or any other type of word processing document. You can easily convert any document to plain text by using the "save as" command on the file menu of Word, Appleworks, et al.

Before you send your work, please read it aloud to yourself or someone else to doublecheck your own editing. Also make sure you include in the heading "submission" and that your return e-mail address is the best one to reach you at. The submission itself should have at the top your full name, your day and evening phone numbers and a one line bio (if it includes a link it can exceed the one line). I am always looking for new stories for this website. If you are interested, here are some things to keep in mind. Please read this in its entirety before sending me anything. Thank you for your interest!

1. I'm looking for sexy, well-written stories about lesbians and bi women having sex with each other.

What do I mean by sexy? Turn me on, pique my curiosity, make me wet. Get me involved in your characters and their tale.

What do I mean by well-written? Use vivid language that complements your story. I'm not a grammar fascist, but I like writing that is, at the least, free of misuse/abuse of words, punctuation, and sentence structure. But don't worry about minor, fixable errors.

I also recommend Susie Bright's book How to Write a Dirty Story and Lars Eighner's Elements of Arousal. (The latter is intended for gay men, but is full of helpful advice that applies to everyone.)

2. I'm not looking for snuff or utterly non-consensual action. I don't have any personal objection to these kinds of stories per se, but this is not the place for them. Stories about other sensitive topics (from incest and underage sexual activity to bestiality and necrophilia) will be considered, but may run with a disclaimer to warn readers of extreme content.

I'm also not a big fan of "scene reports," that is, narrations of the hot session you and your lover had last night. I find that they're often not all that hot for the outsider, that they don't work as stand-alone stories. There's no plot or tension, only sex. If you think you can make your account work, go ahead and send it to me -- I'm not forbidding this sort of story, I'm just letting you know my biases.

Which is not to say that you have to go all literary on me. I like all sorts of erotic writing, from the sordid and nasty to the delicately phrased. I enjoy genre fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror, noir), so don't let that stop you from submitting. I love well-written S/M fiction as much as I do an all-vanilla story. All you have to do, story-wise, is catch my interest and keep it. That's the only true requirement.

One more thing: please try to be explicit. Euphemism and atmosphere have their place, but not as a substitute for the reality of what we do. Don't be timid, shy, or coy in your writing.

I am not interested in poetry. This, too, belongs elsewhere.

I cannot publish fan fiction (a.k.a. "slash") because of copyright issues. Sorry.

3. I'm looking for stories with a female by-line. I don't care about your orientation, and I won't be doing a panty-check on my authors, but all stories will be presumed to have a female author, and will appear with a woman's name beside them.

If you set out to fool me as regards your gender, and then go bragging about it elsewhere, I will remove your story.

4. Other details: Length is open; longer stories may be serialized. If you have specific break-point in mind with a longer piece, let me know.

I will accept reprints from small print 'zines and personal websites, as well as reprints of stories that are available only in out-of-print collections. Otherwise, I will consider only original, unpublished fiction.

5. I try to illustrate each story. If you have an image or images that you would like to accompany your story and that you hold the copyright to, feel free to send it in as well, in a zipped file no larger than 50K. You may also send smaller sample versions, and if I like what I see, I will ask for a larger version later.

Line drawing, photography, collage -- all digital media (except animation) will be considered.

I am also interested in artists who want to provide illustration for stories on assignment. Send me your samples (see above) or point me to your portfolio. I can pay a small amount for illustrations. Contact me for more information on art submissions.

6. I pay for each story. Not a lot, but a small honorarium. (Bigger than a breadbox, smaller than a dinner for two at a nice restaurant.) I'm aware that writers aren't paid nearly enough for their writing, and I wish I could subsidize all my favorite authors so that they could lounge about their computers all day long eating chocolate and writing smut for me. But until the world changes and someone gives me a MacArthur grant or something, we're stuck with the economics we have.

We'll also give you a free pass to the site, of course.

I ask for a three-month exclusive -- that is, your story will appear for three months on the Story Mistress site and nowhere else. After that, you're free to reprint it anywhere you like. I also ask for the non-exclusive right to include your story in the Story Mistress archives indefinitely. These terms are non-negotiable, so if you don't like them, don't submit.

7. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

8. To submit, send me an email with the subject line "Story Mistress Submission:" followed by your story's title. Include the story in the body of your text. No attachments please! Submissions that do not follow these instructions will not be read.

One reader asked if I knew of any reference that listed and defined all the different genres of porn/erotica. (I don't, do any of you? I remember we ran one specific to BDSM but I don't know of anything else.) She'd run across a reference to "leg sex" and had no idea of what it was.

I remember being just as confused years ago when I first ran across the term. Sex with legs? Well, yes and no. The term leg sex refers to a sexual preoccupation (or just an enjoyment of) women's legs, feet, toes, hose, shoes, etc. On the extreme end it's about female domination and worship, on the other end it's about foot massage and pedicures and the licking, sucking, touching, etc., of those various body parts. Anal and vaginal toe penetration is fairly common, as are "foot jobs" (stimulating the penis by using the soles of (someone else's) feet.) I've even heard of using a foot instead of a hand for vaginal and anal "fisting."

I'm looking for essays/articles that will inspire and/or instruct other porn writers. Success stories, how to break into certain markets, unique views on the genre, etc. Around 800 words is good, although I'm flexible.

I'd love articles on specific markets. There are so many sub-genres of porn and it's hard to know the subtleties of each. If you've got a specialty, from BDSM to Watersports to Leg Sex to Amputeeism, feel free to share your knowledge.

You can either suggest a topic (query) or send something whole. I'll get back to you within a week as to whether or not I'll be able to use it.
